On Ferelden Love
So I just found out that Arl Eamon had two dads, and as I’m replaying the games I’m getting the sense that Ferelden just has no stigmas around relationships that other nations seem to have. Like certainly LGBTQ+ people exist everywhere, and nowhere in Thedas do they seem to be actively persecuted/harmed on account of sexuality, but most places seem to treat same-sex attraction as more of a “character quirk” than anything. Tevinter and Orlais seem to be in the same boat that a person, especially in the higher classes, is to marry an opposite-sex partner first and then take care of “personal tastes” on the side. Orlais also seems to have the Social Status of “mistress,” i.e., “officially recognized extramarital female lover of a wealthy/titled man,” but it seems unclear if there is an official equivalent for the lovers of wealthy/titled women. In any case, Orlais certainly has Rules for How Things Are Done, even extramarital affairs; the role of a mistress has a certain set of behaviors and expectations associated with it.
Then, Ferelden. Kingdom of Dogs. At the very least, we know that exclusive, monogamous same-sex partnerships are not strange enough to remark upon; i.e., Wade and Herren in DA:O. Are they married under Chantry law? I don’t think it’s ever confirmed, but I don’t think they couldn’t be. I think it’s notable that Sera, being the only same-sex romance option you can explicitly marry, is Ferelden.
Back to Arl Eamon tho. So yeah he had one mom and two dads, who seemed to all be mutually involved, and he referred to both men as “Father.” The non-nobility father, btw, was named Connor and is the person after whom Arl Eamon named his son. All this leads me to believe that this poly triad was common knowledge, and, like Wade and Herren, was something no one considered strange because Fereldens just Don’t Care About People’s Business. There is even some evidence that King Calenhad, the one who made Ferelden into Ferelden, had a “special friendship” with his advisor Aldenon the Wise. So “special,” in fact, that Calenhad ended up abandoning his life as king and going off into the wilds to search for Aldenon, never to be seen again.
And let’s also note that Bann Teagan, Eamon’s brother, has the option to flirt with a female Warden regardless of origin. The way it’s worded seems to imply he is, at the very least, not opposed to the idea of marriage -- even with a non-human, even with a mage. While we tragically cannot pursue any romance, it does tell us something about the world: while Ferelden royalty is bound by obligation to marry opposite-sex humans of appropriate social caste, it seems that middle-nobility is a bit more flexible.
Since society is still society, and heads of government in a monarchy are expected to produce more heads of government, I would guess that Bann Teagan is expected/required to marry a human woman to carry on the noble line. I would also expect him to be fully aware of this, and so I believe that his flirting with a female Warden, even the playful inquiry about marriage, does not interfere with Teagan’s duty to marry someone else. He was, after all, raised by three parents just like his brother; the remarkable thing here is not the implication of a possible triad, but the implication a possible triad where the word “marriage” applies to multiple partners. Coming from a Bann. Coming from someone in line to be the Arl of Redcliffe.
Could Bann Teagan and his family be outliers? I mean, I guess it’s possible. But also consider, nobility is ALWAYS held to a higher standard than commoners when it comes to “official” relationships. They are expected to keep producing heads of state, after all; they tend to get married younger, have less control over who they marry, and their behavior reflects more on their family. Also consider that the Guerrin bloodlineis highly influential -- the previous Queen of Ferelden was Eamon and Teagan’s sister! While they certainly have the influence to sleep with whoever they like in private, Eamon and Teagan must absolutely marry within acceptable the acceptable social norms of Ferelden. And if the nobility can form triads, including common-knowledge same-sex relationships, that means commoners can probably do all that and more besides.
All this together leads me to believe that the Ferelden definition of love, and even of family, is much more flexible than most nations. While hetero, monogamous marriage is what we see the most of, I’d guess that it’s not the normal relationship type so much as the most common one. I’d go so far as to wonder if maybe there just isn’t such thing as a “normal relationship” in Ferelden; that there are just relationships, and that’s that.

Heartfirst
Another @black-emporium-exchange entry for me! This one is slice of life with Herren and Wade. I absolutely loved writing about their ordinary life. Just being comfortable with each other and the like.
Content Warning: wholesome, slice of life, old married couple
Length: 3 chapters, 3k words
The long winters of Ferelden took their toll on his joints but Herren knew his pain didn’t compare to what Wade felt. He stretched his back as the last customer left for the day, relieved to go yet another day without a single odd request. Now that the Warden-Commander had gone off on a secret mission, he and Wade settled back into Denerim. There’d been nothing for them at Vigil’s Keep anymore except painful memories that kept Wade up at night. Herren did what he could to soothe the horrific images away but they remained with him presently.
“Wade, it’s time to put down the hammer and have some dinner,” Herren called from his spot near the counter. He was putting the day’s earnings into the safe and heard the bell chime over the door. “My apologies, but we are.” The words died on his tongue as he saw who walked in. Herren couldn’t stop the grimace as he recognized the woman standing there and he just knew this day had just become ten times longer.
“Warden-Commander, it’s been a while.” Though he did add under his breath, not long enough. Her lips turned up in a smile as she heard him but she didn’t react to his words.

Prompt:
“You know, I bet you I could make some amazing armor out of that archdemon’s hide.”
“Wade, no.”
“WADE, YES!”
Ladies and Gentlemen, Warden Commander and Enabler-in-Chief, Cariane Amell:
Commander Amell circled the mannequin at the smithy, holding up the silverite chain or brushing fingers over the plate as she went around, pretending to know what she was looking for. Herren had insisted she inspect the first model of the new guard uniforms before Wade began producing the rest of the order, though she thought it completely unnecessary. They were good materials and Wade was a genius, an eccentric one, but aren’t they all?
Nathaniel watched her intently, doing his best to hide his amusement. The armor was obviously top quality, but Cariane being a mage (albeit one who could wield a sword) clearly had no idea what she was supposed to be appraising. As she crossed between him and the mannequin he touched her waist and bent to quietly offer rescue, “Shall I take over, Commander?”
She smirked and made a face that suggested ‘that obvious, is it?’, but responded generously, “By all means, Constable Howe.”
“This is excellent work, Master Wade.” Nathaniel called out to the armorer before addressing Herren, “You certainly did not exaggerate his skill, my friend…”
She stepped aside and let them discuss the finer points of metalwork, and turned to the courtyard to check on Voldrik’s repair efforts when a sharp sound interrupted her.
“Psst!... Psst! Commander!” Wade beckoned her with a stage whisper, quickly glancing back at his partner before gracing her with a charming smile.
“What can I do for you, Master Wade?” She approached and added, “The armor looks wonderful, by the way.”
A look of confusion crossed his face momentarily, “What? Oh, that. Yes, of course,” he dismissed the compliment. “I was wondering…” he had the look of a child about to ask for an extra cookie, “what did you do with the archdemon’s carcass after Denerim?”
“The carcass?” The question took her aback. No one had mentioned the archdemon in months, except in the most abstract, heroic retellings of the battle. What does one do with an old god’s carcass, anyway? In fact, she knew exactly what Wade would do with it. “I…well, it was broken up and sent out for study. Wiesshaupt got most of it, I think the some of it went to the University of Orlais-”
“Did you keep any for yourself? Scales, hide, bone, perhaps?” He interrupted, clutching at her wrist with a hopeful grin on his face. “I could make you the most amazing armor from it!” The Commander glanced back towards the shop counter, where Herren was now watching their conversation with concern.
“Why, no, Master Wade…” she answered measuredly, and more loudly than she needed to, “of course not. Why would I keep a blighted dragon’s hide here in Vigil’s Keep?” She gave the armorer a conspiring look. Herren, seemingly satisfied, returned to his conversation with Nathaniel and Dworkin, who had joined them to discuss ways to incorporate explosive shielding into Wade’s pieces.
It wasn’t clear if he had picked up the subtext, “Oh that is a shame.” He crossed his arms and leaned back against his anvil, “What color was it?”
“Hm,” Cariane thought for a moment, “a sort of dark, pinkish violet, you could say.”
“Oh! That would have looked perfect with your complexion!” Wade lamented, reaching out to pick up a lock of her hair, “And with these beautiful brown tresses…like dark chocolate and raspberries!” She shook her head and bit back a grin, taking a spot next to him against the anvil and mirroring his posture. He had absolutely understood her meaning. Wade casually continued his - ahem, hypothetical - probing. “Did it breathe physical fire, or magical fire?”
“Oh, it was definitely magic fire,” she nodded, remembering the black and purple gouts she’d exhausted herself avoiding.
“Excellent!” He exclaimed, under his breath.
Cariane leaned closer and cautioned in a low voice, “Wade, you do know it’s blighted?”
“Yes, I’m aware.” He answered matter-of-factly. “I know how to handle dangerous materials.” He gasped to himself, “Can you imagine? The Hero of the Blight girded in the Blight itself, like an ancient horror out for vengeance!”
His excitement made her smile, “You’ve been thinking about this for a while, haven’t you?” He only grinned and shoved her playfully with his shoulder.
Nathaniel approached the pair on his way out, “Master Wade, brilliant work as usual,” he declared, shaking the armorer’s hand. He turned to Carie, “I’m sure the Commander would agree.”
“Indeed, this is more than sufficient for our soldiers.” She asserted, “Thank you, Master Wade.”
Nathaniel subtly brushed her fingertips with his, “Shall I await you in your office, Commander?”
“Yes, Constable Howe, I’ll be there shortly.” She answered with a small smile. He nodded to Wade and headed back to the Keep. “Well, Master Wade, I’m sure you and Herren can take it from here,” she announced. “I’ll need our soldiers outfitted in the silverite as soon as possible.”
“At your service, Commander. Master Wade will get right on it.” Herren gave his partner a sharp look, “Won’t you, Wade?”
Wade sighed dramatically, “Yes, yes. I’m a veritable machine.” Herren rolled his eyes and spared him a snicker before turning back to his inventory.
When he was out of earshot, the Commander turned to Wade and advised, quietly, “Eastern cellars, second sublevel,” the armorer’s eyebrows climbed up his forehead as she continued, “first door on the right.” He allowed himself a small, giddy squeak before clasping her hands and thanking her profusely.
“Wade,” she warned, “this is a side project.” She looked up at him sternly, “Side. Project.”
He beamed and dropped her hands, “Yes, of course, Commander.”
“My soldiers need outfitting.” She stated plainly.
“Understood.” He nodded, practically buzzing with excitement.
Cariane gave him a fond smile before turning back to the Keep. “Have fun.”

Favorite game from the last five years
I think the only game I’ve played that’s been released in the last five years is Inquisition? So I guess it’s that by default
Most nostalgic game
Uhh the several games I used to play as a kid. The Sims maybe? Anyone remember Lenny’s Music Toons?
Game that deserves a sequel
I dunno? I’m pretty content with the games I’ve played not having a sequel? I’d say DA maybe but it’s in the works already
Game that deserves a remaster
DA: Origins but not the broodmother because uh...no one wants to see that
Favorite game series
Dragon Age! It’s the first game I really got invested in to be honest.
Favorite genre
I’m not sure? I like plot driven stuff I guess? Not really too particular. Oh I do like it when there’s puzzles involved.
Least favorite genre
Not a big fan of just straight up shooting games. ME doesn’t count because biotics.
Favorite song from a game
Someone’s gonna @ me for this. I like the Dark Solas and Lost Elf themes in Inquisition. But the party camp theme from Origins gives me some good nostalgia.
But tbh, I don’t pay too much attention to game themes bc I’m too engrossed in playing?
Favorite character from a game
Zevran and Kaidan? :D
They’re just who’s coming to mind right now. But Kaidan really made his way up there quickly huh?
Favorite ship from a game
Are we talking about canon x canon characters? Merrill and Isabela I guess. For actual canon relationships, maybe Wade and Herren.
Favorite cutscene
“Looks like the duke...has fallen from grace.”
Favorite boss
Meredith? Because isn’t it fun killing Templars?
First console
Does PC count? But if not, then the first I’ve ever owned is a DS Lite.
Current console or consoles
I play mainly on the PC. I still have my DS and a very old xbox that a family friend gave us.
Console you want
I just want a better gaming laptop tbh :/
Place from a game you’d like to visit
The Normandy
Place from a game you’d like to live in
None? There’s colorism in Thedas which isn’t fun for me. And the ME universe...is too much. I don’t think I could handle it.
Ridiculous crossover that would never happen but would be super fun
We could have Mario in Thedas? That could be fun.
Book that would make a good game
I don’t think any book I’ve read could be a good game. Maybe Wicked? That could be fun. The PC can be Elphaba. It’d be really political though.

DAO Appreciation Week: Day 2
Continuing this just because:
Questions of the Day:
What is your favorite area in Origins? (ex: Denerim, Haven, The Dalish Camps, The Deep Roads, etc.)
This is a tough one but I’m gonna say the Party Camp. I get it, it makes zero sense that it looks the same wherever the Warden & CO travel but the camp, even after the Shriek attack, is where Rhia feels the safest. Safety in numbers, being surrounded by friends, a warm fire & comfy bedroll & Leliana singing a lovely tune while whoever is on cooking duty prepares a meal.
What is your favorite non-Warden pairing from Origins? (ex: wade x herren, leliana x zevran, Anora x morrigan, etc.) - the pairing does not have to be canon, it can be any pairing that does not involve the Warden.
Loghain Mac Tir/Maric Theirin/Rowan Guerrin as the happy OT3 they should have been.
Prompts of the Day:
How does your Warden respond to stress and the different places explored during Origins?
If this is only during the DAO timeline, then she responds badly to stress due to lack of sleep, trauma, unaddressed grief/loss and anger issues. Esp. in crowded places like Denerim, she’s constantly on edge. Redcliffe pisses her off, mainly because of Teagan putting everything on her instead of doing anything himself. Haven/the Temple fascinates her despite everything & the High Dragon battle got her blood pumping. The Brecilian Forest she would’ve like if it wasn’t for the werewolves and OTT angry spirits. The Fade? Burn that shit down. (Solas is lucky she wasn’t made Inquisitor, lol) Yeah, Rhia didn’t have a good time during DAO.

Dragon Age Origins Appreciation Week: Day 2
Questions of the Day: What is your favorite area in Origins? (ex: Denerim, Haven, The Dalish Camps, The Deep Roads, etc.) I’m super partial to the woods for Nature of the Beast just because of my attachment to the plot line. What is your favorite non-Warden pairing from Origins? (ex: wade x herren, leliana x zevran, Anora x morrigan, etc.) - the pairing does not have to be canon, it can be any pairing that does not involve the Warden. Wade/Herren is some GOOD CANON SHIT. Prompts of the Day
How does your Warden respond to stress and the different places explored during Origins? The tower looms over them in the distance, a pillar of darkness blocking out the moonlight. Surana tucks her knees up under her chin and pointedly looks down at the water instead. Leliana glances over at her. “Is there something wrong?” she asks gently. Surana shakes her head. “No no, I’m fine.” she says curtly. Alistair reaches over and nudges Leliana’s shoulder before she can speak again. Shakes his head silently. The bard settles back in her seat again. “Nothing’s wrong.” Surana says, more to herself than her companions. “You can’t get claustrophobic in open spaces, right?” Before they leave through the locked door, templars warning them away from the mere idea, she takes a deep breath. One last one before the heavy locks slam closed behind them. Levels her gaze ahead and steps forward. There is fear in her. There is always a fear. But a lion is always a lion; fear or not. Shipping of Non-Warden Pairings. Write a drabble about a non-warden pairing, or draw them, etc. “If he drives you so mad why not get another job?” Herren shot the Warden a look that could have turned a lesser person to stone. Snorted indignantly and glanced back over at Wade. “The man would die without me.” he says simply. But Wade seems capable enough. He’s a master forger and, whiny or no, perfectly good at surviving. They’ve been ‘roughing it’ for a few weeks in the Keep. No way he couldn’t go off on his own. Then, the Warden stops. “You’ve got other investments, don’t you?” they ask. Herren snorts again, haughty, and waves them off. “Then what is it?” “Guess I should expect this, considering he’s never made a ring he thought good enough for the occasion.” he says finally, watching Wade hammer a chest piece to better fit one of the Warden recruits. The Warden laughs. “I should have known.” they blurt. Herren rolls his eyes. “How long?” “Oh, years now.” he says, “Doesn’t matter. Lost count ages ago. He drives me utterly mad.” He tries not to sound fond when he says this. Judging from the Warden’s grin, it doesn’t work. Oh well.

DA:O Appreciation Week - Day2
Questions of the Day:
What is your favorite area in Origins? (ex: Denerim, Haven, The Dalish Camps, The Deep Roads, etc.)
Honestly, it’s the party camp. It’s always such a good feeling to come home to your friends, standing around the fire, chatting with everyone.
What is your favorite non-Warden pairing from Origins? (ex: wade x herren, leliana x zevran, Anora x morrigan, etc.) - the pairing does not have to be canon, it can be any pairing that does not involve the Warden.
I have a weakness in my heart for Zevran/Alistair, especially when it involves thoroughly flustering this poor ex-Chantry boy.

DA:O Appreciation Week Day 2
i’m sure my answers to these will be Shocking
What is your favorite area in Origins? (ex: Denerim, Haven, The Dalish Camps, The Deep Roads, etc.)
Redcliffe! It’s large enough that there’s a lot of NPCs to talk to and everything, but also not so big I have to go through 3 loading screens to get where I need to go. Also, if no one who follows me has noticed, I really love both Redcliffe questlines in DA, but especially the one in Origins.
What is your favorite non-Warden pairing from Origins? (ex: wade x herren, leliana x zevran, Anora x morrigan, etc.) - the pairing does not have to be canon, it can be any pairing that does not involve the Warden.
Anora/Alistair, I think. It was hard to pick one bc I don’t really talk about pairings not involving my OCs lmao, but I do like them a lot! And Alistair/Leliana is pretty cute; they both need love and affection and are both very loving and affectionate people ;v;

Dragon Age Origins Appreciation Week - Day 2
[Alrighty!! So for actual day 2 stuff]
QUESTIONS OF THE DAY:
What is your favorite area in Origins? (ex: Denerim, Haven, The Dalish Camps, The Deep Roads, etc.)
I have always loved the openness of Redcliffe, looking down from the windmill and traversing the hills. I also really love the Frostback Mountains, specifically Soldier’s Peak (I know that’s DLC but still). Having this snow-capped mountain top and a giant castle resting at the peak, gahh it’s just so cool.
What is your favorite non-Warden pairing from Origins? (ex: wade x herren, leliana x zevran, Anora x morrigan, etc.) - the pairing does not have to be canon, it can be any pairing that does not involve the Warden.
My favorite pairing is Alistair and Anora. I love the fact that they do end up having a happy marriage and getting along if you have them get together. It makes it all worth while.
Prompt of the Day:
How does your Warden respond to stress and the different places explored during Origins?
Liris tries to bottle up her stress and anxiety. She doesn’t like putting that on the others. So she holds it in for weeks, until it turns into stress-induced Archdemon nightmares (ones worse than normal), sometimes even night-terrors. She bolts up in a panic and is screaming silently. It gets bad. After a while, her silent screams turn into actual screams, waking up the others, and Alistair will rush into her tent brandishing a sword and sees her with her unfocused eyes and shaking body and drops the sword. He goes to her side and holds her until the night-terror passes and she falls back into deeper sleep. Due to the nature of night-terrors, Liris remembers nothing except the dream the next day. It’s like sleepwalking, but worse.
On a happier note, she loves being able to travel all over Ferelden. Her whole young life she was trapped in a guarded tower. Now she gets to see sights beyond Lake Calenhad. Even the grosser parts of Ferelden amazes her because at least it’s different. Her favorite places are any open spaces: Redcliffe, the Kocari Wilds, the Frostback Mountains, pretty much anywhere in the Hinterlands and the Bannorn, even Orzammar is open enough for an underground society. She doesn’t like Denerim though, surprisingly enough. Even though she was born in the alienage in Denerim, everything about Denerim is cramped and suffocating and she prefers to be elsewhere.

DA:O Appreciation Week - Day 2
Questions of the Day:
What is your favorite area in Origins? (ex: Denerim, Haven, The Dalish Camps, The Deep Roads, etc.) Orzammar was hands down my favourite area in Origins. I loved everything about it; it seemed like something the creators spent a lot of time on, and I greatly enjoyed it as an introduction to dwarven culture in this series. The Brecilian Forest is also up there, though.
What is your favorite non-Warden pairing from Origins? (ex: wade x herren, leliana x zevran, Anora x morrigan, etc.) - the pairing does not have to be canon, it can be any pairing that does not involve the Warden. My favourite canonical pairings are Zev/Taliesen/Rinnala and Zev/Isabela (non-romantically, anyway, though I do like to believe they have a rather large soft spot for one another). And my favourite non-canonical pairing is Zevistair. By, like, a lot.
Prompts of the Day:
How does your Warden respond to stress and the different places explored during Origins? Once she becomes less intensely guarded from all the strange shems around her, Lalia LOVES taking in the world she often daydreamed about seeing. She doesn’t particularly enjoy all the death and despair and what have you, but everything is so thrilling after she gains some freedoms as a Grey Warden that she can’t help but remain optimistic and cheerful, and her response to most forms of stress is to rely on humour and a shrug. That is, until the Deep Roads. She doesn’t handle being underground very well, so far from the open sky, and the encounter with the Broodmother and seeing what could lay in her future shakes her deeply. I tend to think of that as a sort of half-”hardening” for her; a few choice words and acts of kindness from her closest companions help her steady herself, but she does accept her role with a slightly grimmer seriousness afterwards, as though that’s when it finally hits her that whatever freedom she now possesses will likely end in a much more gruesome death than anything she might have faced within the relative safety of the confining Alienage walls.
Lyna has a much more no nonsense, it-is-how-it-is personality and takes most things in stride. Amongst her clan, she was never particularly expressive and relied heavily on reflection and inner strength during times of distress. After being recruited to the wardens, she becomes far more stoic and finds it very difficult to open up to the outsiders that surround her. Instead of particular events or new locations, she’s stressed by the constant foreignness of everything outside of Dalish culture and her feelings of intense isolation. Her main coping mechanism is to keep her hands busy, and when there is no work to be done, she carves almost incessantly, mostly little figures or practice weapons that she can later sell or gift along the way. As she learns to trust her companions, she’s able to relax, but any time she starts to miss home, the whittling knife is a sure sight. She’s totally cool when it comes to the Landsmeet and her fate as a warden; those things, in her mind, are problems with very simple solutions. If a self-proclaimed shemlen regent has to pay by blood, so be it. If someone has to die to stop the Blight, so be it. If her path eventually leads her on a Long Walk instead, so be it.

DA:O Appreciation Week- Day 2
Questions of the Day:
What is your favorite area in Origins? (ex: Denerim, Haven, The Dalish Camps, The Deep Roads, etc.)
Idk if it counts, but probably the Party Camp. I loved coming back from a quest and getting to give everyone their gifts and try to get new dialogue.
What is your favorite non-Warden pairing from Origins? (ex: wade x herren, leliana x zevran, Anora x morrigan, etc.) - the pairing does not have to be canon, it can be any pairing that does not involve the Warden.
Like I said for Day 1, Leliana x Morrigan for sure. Morrigan being stubborn and trying so hard to dislike the bard who talks about silly things like stories and shoes. And really, Morrigan doesn’t have enough experience with people before then to look further beneath the surface. So when she finds out about Marjolaine and Lelaina’s history as a bard, sees the harder surfaces underneath all of Leliana’s speeches about faith and second chances, she’s absolutely floored. And rather irritated that she didn’t suspect before. And she wants to dislike Leliana, she really does, but that bard just worms her way into her affections anyway. Even though it’s foolish. Even though it’s weakness.
She wore that dress in the Winter Palace just for her.
Prompts of the Day:
How does your Warden respond to stress and the different places explored during Origins?
Ellie is typically good at handling the stress. She was poised to govern Highever, after all. That Fergus eventually takes her seat in the Teyrn because she was forced to become a Grey Warden causes unending friction between the siblings. Fergus may be older, but everyone knows their father planned for Elissa to succeed him.
So she’s cool under the pressure, but angry throughout much of their adventuring. She makes the decisions (because Alistair wouldn’t, and Maker what is wrong with him? It’s his duty; he was the senior Warden, why must he place all the burden on her?)and leads everyone through, but she’s not happy to be there.
That is, not until soft songs played on a lute by the fire start to cause warm feelings to prick at her stomach. Not until Morrigan’s barbed comments start to make her smile instead of putting her on edge. Or Alistair’s jokes actually become funny instead of something to grimace at. Not until Sten’s stoic silence becomes a safe harbor and Zevran’s unending flirtations put her at ease.
Not until she finally has a family again.
Shipping of Non-Warden Pairings. Write a drabble about a non-warden pairing, or draw them, etc.
(This is probably cheating, but I’m using the same drabble I wrote for yesterday because it counts. And I was late to yesterday’s anyway. So *shrugs*)
“Go away,” Morrigan demanded. Soft footsteps still came ever closer, the opposite of what she’d said. She glared over her shoulder with a huff. “Blast it, did you not hear me?”
“My hearing is fine, thank you,” Leliana replied, her lilting voice carrying through the sounds of the quiet eve. She settled herself on a rock a few paces from where Morrigan sat, and she began removing her boots to dip her feet into the river the group had chosen to camp beside.
“Then why must you irritate me so?” Morrigan asked.
“You got in another fight with her, didn’t you?” Leliana asked, knowing full well the answer. It was unlikely anyone in the camp hadn’t heard. “You can talk to me about it, if you want.”
“’Tis a fool’s errand!” Morrigan exclaimed, surprising even herself. “This Urn does not even exist, yet we must chase after fairytales and waste even more time than we did with that abomination child! I do not know why I should not just leave. T’would be better than following after a fool who will get us all killed.”
Leliana opened her mouth to argue, and Morrigan was ready, a barb waiting on her tongue. She knew Leliana agreed with the Warden, of course. They were too soft, weak, the both of them. Yet, Leliana’s lips then pressed shut, and she cocked her head as peered back at the witch.
“You don’t mean that,” Leliana argued, and Morrigan was about to reply that yes, she did, in fact, mean every word when her attention was distracted by the bard’s fingers beginning to undo the clasps of her leather chestplate. Her eyes were drawn to the slivers of pale skin now catching the moonlight, but she tore them away, frowning, when she saw the corner of Leliana’s mouth quirk up. “It is normal to disagree. Friends fight, Morrigan.”
“I do not need you to tell me the rituals of friendship. I hardly think you’re qualified to give advice in that respect,” Morrigan snapped. She referred to Marjolaine, of course, and Morrigan almost felt guilty when the barb landed and Leliana frowned. Almost. But by then Leliana had undressed completely and was standing, completely bare, in the river facing her, and Morrigan could no longer focus on anything except the overwhelming urge to curse away the foolish heat seeping into her cheeks. “And anyway, the point remains that I am right, and this is a horrid waste of my time.”
“Well, if we’re wasting time already, perhaps you’d like to join me for a swim? The water is quite pleasant,” Leliana replied, the corners of her eyes creasing as she smiled at Morrigan’s petulance.
“I shall not,” Morrigan retorted. “T’would only give you an excuse to stare at my breasts again.”
Leliana’s delighted giggle carried across the water. “But they are so nice to look at, no? Do you not like mine?”
“I-” Morrigan stuttered. It was true there was something…pleasing about the shape of the other woman’s features, the way the curves caught the moonlight and glistened with drops of water. “They are…adequate. I suppose.”
Leliana arched an eyebrow. “Adequate?” she repeated, then waded out of the water so that all of her was now on display. And decidedly close to Morrigan, close enough to reach out and touch, should she wish. Which she didn’t. Definitely not. “Perhaps you just need a second glance.”
“I’m not sure why you think looking twice would change anything,” Morrigan said slowly, warily eyeing Leliana’s hand as she reached for her own. She lifted the witch’s hand up, and surely she wasn’t going to…? No, she wasn’t because, instead, Leliana was yanking the both of them into the water. Morrigan spat out water in indignation. “Of all the fool things-”
Morrigan never finished her sentence, namely because a certain bard laid claim to her lips instead.
She decided wasting time wasn’t so awful after all.
