Two sides of the same hedgehog

Ever since I was introduced to their characters in the SEGA racing games, I've been very fascinated by the many similarities between Beat (Jet Set Radio) and Vyse (Skies Of Arcadia). Said similarities were:

17 years old

Friendly

Cocky

Leader of rebels

Loves freedom

They were probably based on the same archetype. Anyway, it was really interesting to me how these two characters from wildly different genres could be so alike, and when I studied their differences, I had this epiphany—Beat and Vyse were the two sides of Sonic the Hedgehog.

While both are heroes and rebels, I'd say Vyse is more heroic and Beat is more rebellious. Vyse is the blue-colored hero who helps the weak and inspires the people around him, whereas Beat is the rebellious speedster who wants to express himself freely without a care.

(Yes, I know that trait applies to all the GGs since they don't have fully defined personalities, but because Beat is the face of Jet Set Radio, he is the main representative of its themes. Plus, SEGA Heroes did sort of flesh him out; it was a little exaggerated, but I think we were supposed to get the impression that Beat is quite personable.)

So, I traced the yin-yang symbol, added spikes to it, and put Beat and Vyse on opposing sides. The sides are blue and orange because they're opposite colors like black and white, but unlike the typical black-and-white yin-yang symbol which is about opposing forces that cancel each other out to achieve Zen (or whatever), Beat and Vyse together achieve Sonic.

And I ship them!

I meant to use JSR Beat for this; hence the final panel. But then I found out it's in JSRF that enemies melt into the ground after being tagged, so I had to use JSRF Beat.

In the original version, Vyse would happily offer a Pyri Box for Beat to use, but the latter just goes "Thanks, but I think I'm just gonna tag it."

Also, I didn't look up any references on Beat until I was coloring, and yeah, he looks bad with the headphone band being so close to his head. I'll redeem myself with the next art I put out!

Like, two weeks ago the Jello Plays Games YouTube channel was playing and voice acting Skies of Arcadia, and this bit in-between the in-game dialogue had me giggling.

I sketched it out and had forgotten about it until last night, haha.
