Notes on Kit

So we were able to test out both the R5 and Panasonic HC-VX1 Camcorder. The form factors and video quality are very different however I think if we use them for different types of footage they could complement each other beautifully.

R5:

Very heavy with 28-70 f2 makes it very difficult to film handheld - so I think we should use this camera on a tripod for more still shots.

Much better dynamic range and beautiful colours - definitely better at capturing the atmosphere of a scene.

Due to its high-quality footage, I think we should use this as our interview camera as we wanted the shot to be fixed anyway.

Camcorder:

The camcorder is incredibly easy to use and creates very organic and raw footage. It allows us to be more present and flowing with the scene, especially with the zoom.

The video quality definitely feels more digital and a little crunchy. However, through our grading and use of grain, we can 'degrade' the footage to a much more warm and soft feeling inspired by the visual language of Super 8. I think this will help add this sense of journey and a more personal feeling to the film. It also relates to the town's recreational identity.

So I think this camera will be good to use for B-roll. Shots that focus on textures, movement, and the candid life of the town. This will help to draw the viewer along between the more still 'photographic' shots from the R5.

Hoyt St Boo’ger - Tiny but Mighty

Introduction Hoyt St. -- The Portland, Oregon-based electric skateboarding startup best known for their “Puck” remote hand-crafted longboards  -- announced their first electric cruiser board, the “Boo’ger,” in late 2020. Utilizing the knowledge that they had acquired while building their almost-completely bespoke EL1 longboard, they set out to build a killer little pocket rocket electric cruiser. At the time of its release, it went up against boards such as the Boosted Mini X Join me in picking this Boo’ger apart. (Don’t worry, that’s the first and last pun I’ll drop in this review.

Background I rode my first Hoyt St board — an EL1 — on August 3, 2019. I was in Portland for a family vacation and Jeff, Hoyt St’s co-founder and CEO, graciously agreed to meet up and let me take a unit out for a rip. Though my testing wasn’t incredibly extensive (a few loops around the block in Downtown PDX), I was thoroughly impressed by the board’s combination of performance, handling, and looks. I was later invited to check out the Hoyt St workshop to take a peak behind the scenes.

The majority of parts that go into a Hoyt St board are designed and manufactured in house by the team, which is pretty damn impressive if you ask me. It was so interesting to see how much hard work was being put into these amazing machines. In fact, I started using the Hoyt puck controller in my Lacroix Nazare later that year, a massive upgrade to the Flipsky VX1 that came stock with the board.

I kept in touch with the Hoyt St. team and in December 2020, they sent me their Boo’ger shortboard to demo just before its official launch. I had intended for my review to go live Spring 2021, but I was inundated with school work and other projects, thus pushing my review onto the backburner. Now, two years later, I’m sitting down at a coffee shop with some free time on my hands, writing this review. I do wanna give the Hoyt St. guys a huge shoutout for not dogging on me for my horrendously delayed write-up. Better late than never, right? User Experience As I was sent a pre-production demo unit, I can’t really speak on the finalized consumer unboxing experience. However, I was pleasantly surprised that Hoyt provides a very, very well-made travel bag with all their Boo’gers.

Isn’t that thing sick? Unfortunately, you won’t be able to fly with the board in the backpack (or fly with the board at all, for that matter). The Boo’ger is powered by a 259 Wh battery, well beyond the 100 Wh limit that most airlines adhere to. I believe the battery is removable but I don’t think it uses the same “flyable” battery units that the “flyable” Hoyt St. EL2 longboard uses. Again, this was a pre-production unit so I didn’t bother tearing it open. Back to the board. This thing handled SO WELL. I’ve ridden quite a few electric shortboards in my esk8 career: from the late Riptide R1 Elite to the also-late Predator Banshee, and from the crowd-favorite Boosted Mini S/X to OG Meepo V1.5 30″. Out of every electric shortboard I’ve tried, the Hoyt St. Boo’ger was by far the most stable and best performing. The power delivery is incredibly smooth and predictable thanks to Hoyt’s awesome Puck remote and presice VESC tuning (my demo unit was equipped with a Lacroix Stormcore 60D), and the 33″ bamboo deck offers plenty of room to stretch out. And that’s a lot, coming from someone who still daily drives rides the 38″ Boosted V2 Dual+, an electric longboard still regarded as one of the smoothest-accelerating and best handling boards of all time

Upgrades Just like my previous review of the Monday Motorbikes GEN7 (holy crap, was that really two years ago???), this board was given to me as a demo unit. As such, I cannot personally speak on upgrades. HOWEVER, Hoyt offers the “Whysir,” a skatepark-ready version of the Booger that includes “added reinforcements” such as plastic(?) rails to protect the board’s gorgeous bamboo deck when riding rails and much heavier drivetrain reeinforcement than the Boo’ger.

I’m super stoked that the Hoyt crew battle-test their boards and make sure that the specs that they post on their website are specs that you can realistically get. Again, these range and speed tests were conducted in the Northern California suburbs where I used to live. Anyone from NorCal who’s familiar with just how hilly the Napa/Sonoma area can be knows that this board has -- as Dr. Emmett Brown once said -- “seen some serious shit.”

Gripes Besides the price, it’s hard to name bad things about this board. The Boo’ger sells for $1,799.99 USD on the Hoyt website, so it’s definitely in the realm of botique boards. For just $100 more, you can get the Lacroix Barrel ($1,899.99 USD) with a little more range, almost double the top speed of the Boo’ger, and the capability of all-terrain, moderate-long-range riding offered by that pneumatic tires and MTB-style deck. As a board, the Boo’ger performs amazingly well in both speed and range, but many people will turn away from it, seeing as you can get a lot more for your money. However, I’ve seen how the Hoyt team develops their boards. They develop them from the ground-up and -- as mentioned -- test, test, and test to ensure that the numbers they post on their specs sheet are the numbers that you can see in the real world. Their boards are overengineered in the best way possible. Not only are you shelling out money for a board that performs exceptionally well, you’re also paying for head-turning design, meticulous engineering, and unmatched customer support from a team of dedicated, hard-working individuals. Trust me, I’ve seen their workflow. It’s nuts. (Oh, and on the note of “head-turning design,” did you know that Jeff Johnson, the head honcho of Hoyt St., also used to work at Nike? Dude literally designed the Nike Foamposites. Those were shoes that I saw all the cool kids wearing in high school. That’s wild.)

Conclusion/tl;dr The Hoyt St. Boo’ger is a fast, agile shortboard that -- while kinda expensive -- is extremely well-built and performs as advertised. This premium electric cruiser will turn heads with its looks, and it’s guaranteed to get you there with decent range. Because of its price, however, it cannot compete with more buget shortboard offerings from companies like Meepo and Ownboard, but I personally think it makes up for it with its with its engineering, charm, and the dedication of the people behind the brand.

(Transparency is very important to me. The Hoyt St. Boo’ger was sent to me by the Hoyt crew themselves and in no way was I paid to write this review. My tour of the Hoyt HQ in 2019 offered an insight into the behind-the-scenes engineering of their boards, but it also did not influence my review nor push me to write any preferential remarks about them. Was it cool? Sure. Did said visit convince me to cover up any gripes I had about the board or the brand? Hell no. Finally, all the companies mentioned in this review (Hoyt St., Lacroix, Flipsky, Monday Motorbikes, Meepo, Boosted (defunct), Riptide (defunct), Predator boards (defunct), and Nike (lol, NOT defunct)) did not pay me for or advise me to write any content in this review.
