VX1, o VOX 1, o Vocal Experiment 1, o Vocal Experience 1, è pensato per essere un progetto che riunisce tutta la mia esperienza a cappella in un album. Ho trascorso molto tempo coinvolto in diversi progetti a cappella in passato. Anche se penso di essere riuscito a mettere la mia firma su molti di questi, non sono mai stati "l'album di Ben". VX1 è quell'album. È un album di riferimento per me che dimostra dove si trova la mia musica in questo momento.

Sebbene VX1 sia registrato interamente dalla mia voce, non è propriamente pensato per essere un album a cappella. Volevo scrivere questo album a cappella perché è lì che risiede la mia competenza e perché ritengo che sia la migliore rappresentazione di "dove si trova la mia musica in questo momento". Tuttavia, non volevo che una mentalità "questo è a cappella" limitasse il modo in cui lo elaboriamo. Non ho esitato a modificare il suono in tutti i modi possibili se suonava più interessante, che si trattasse di effetti elettronici o tecniche. Ho sempre trattato questo album come un album musicale che capita di essere a cappella.

Notes on Kit

So we were able to test out both the R5 and Panasonic HC-VX1 Camcorder. The form factors and video quality are very different however I think if we use them for different types of footage they could complement each other beautifully.

R5:

Very heavy with 28-70 f2 makes it very difficult to film handheld - so I think we should use this camera on a tripod for more still shots.

Much better dynamic range and beautiful colours - definitely better at capturing the atmosphere of a scene.

Due to its high-quality footage, I think we should use this as our interview camera as we wanted the shot to be fixed anyway.

Camcorder:

The camcorder is incredibly easy to use and creates very organic and raw footage. It allows us to be more present and flowing with the scene, especially with the zoom.

The video quality definitely feels more digital and a little crunchy. However, through our grading and use of grain, we can 'degrade' the footage to a much more warm and soft feeling inspired by the visual language of Super 8. I think this will help add this sense of journey and a more personal feeling to the film. It also relates to the town's recreational identity.

So I think this camera will be good to use for B-roll. Shots that focus on textures, movement, and the candid life of the town. This will help to draw the viewer along between the more still 'photographic' shots from the R5.

If you take a look at the size it just merely weighs 45 kg/ cabinet, it's all because of the light weighted aluminum we used. It has a pixel density of 27777/m2 thus giving good clarity and quality.
