BARNABY: [whispering with concern as he walks outside, limping without his caine.] What on Earth is going on out here?

FRANK: Oh, hi, Barnaby! I thought today was reshelf-ing day!!

BARNABY: [softly] It's, reshelving, Frank.. and reshelving day needs a quiet atmosphere.. How could anyone reshelf with you guys bickering so loudly?

JULIE: [still laughing] Our most idiotic Frank here insists that the local mailman is enough of a unit to lift every! Single! Neighbor! In the neighborhood!

BARNABY: [With the tone of someone who’s heard this before, and is concerned] Oh, Frank, not this again..

FRANK: It’s true, it’s true! Barnaby You’ve seen it too!

BARNABY: Now.. Eddie is very capable what with carrying all his packages and such around, but--

FRANK: [Loudly Interrupting] So you agree!!

BARNABY: I did not say-- Frank, our neighborhood includes the likes of Me, Poppy and Home, no one could--

FRANK: [Triumphantly shouting] EDDIE! CAN! LIFT! A! HOOOUUUSSSEEE!!

BARNABY: [Whimper of fear that becomes muffled as he covers his face]

JULIE: Well, I can’t accept such a boast without proof.

FRANK: Oh, I can prove it! Look, here comes Eddie now! Watch this!

BARNABY: [sound of realization] No, wait, Frank-

EDDIE: [as monotone as always] Mail’s here. I’ve got- oh no.

FRANK: [Overlapping him, running off in his direction] EDDIE, EDDIE, EDDIE, CATCH ME! QUICK! CATCH ME!

[Sound of packages hitting the ground and Eddie grunting slightly as he catches Frank.]

FRANK: TA-DAA!! See? See??

JULIE: [Dismissively, with a scoff] Oh come on, that’s barely an accomplishment! I could lift you Frank! Sally could lift you.

BARNABY: [still worried] Yes, I could probably lift you if sufficiently motivated, Frank.

FRANK: [Hmph’s] And yet you two never play “throw-Frank-up-in-the-air-as-hard-as-you-can-and-see-where-he-lands” with me!

BARNABY: [voice cracking with worry] We’ve talked about this, Frank! I didn’t want you to get hurt-

JULIE: [cutting off Barnaby] Well, I’m not convinced. Eddie, [snapping of her fingers], here!

EDDIE: I ain’t a dog, Julie.

JULIE: I just- [quick gasp as shes lifted suddenly] Ah-!

EDDIE: [still monotone as he lifts Julie above his head] voila.

JULIE: A warning would've been nice you ass. [a small, monotone, "ow" from Eddie as she playfully kicks him.] But, I’m still not convinced.

Eddie: [incredibly sarcastic] Oh no. I'm devastated. [drops Julie] Julie: Wait- ['OOF' as shes dropped onto the path] you ass!

FRANK: [overlapping Julie's unceremonious fall and cursing] BARNABY NEXT! BARNABY NEXT!!

EDDIE: Alrighty.

BARNABY: No!

EDDIE: Why not?

FRANK: [said at the same time as Eddie, but much louder] WHY NOOOOT!!

BARNABY: I will not let you hurt yourself attempting to lift me into the air, Eddie! I’d feel terrible!

BARNABY: [gasp of delight] Oh- look! Wally and Poppy! Hello!

POPPY: What’s up? How did the ground taste, Julie?

WALLY: Hi, Barnaby. Hi, Julie. Hi, Frank. Hi, Eddie. What are you--

FRANK: [interrupting Wally mid-greetings; he keeps going underneath his dialogue] EDDIE! LIFT WALLY INSTEAD!

EDDIE: Alright, c’mere little guy- hup!

WALLY: Oh, I’m up here now.

JULIE: [Scoffs] Oh please! Wally weighs 3 apples soaking wet! Watch, put him down.

EDDIE: And down you go.

WALLY: I’m on the ground again.

JULIE: And hup!!

[Another “ta-da!!” to signify her lifting Wally.]

WALLY: Oh, and now I’m up again.

POPPY: Life’s sure got its ups and downs, huh? [chuckling at her own joke] Uhh, but seriously, Cloudie, what’s this new game of yours?

FRANK: [excitedly explaining the situation to Poppy] It’s not a game, Poppy! I’m proving to Julie that Eddie can lift everyone in the neighborhood!

POPPY: Ohhh, why didn’t you say so? Eddie, ya shoulda started with me. Seein’ as I’m such a tiny li’l birdy and all.

EDDIE: [long sigh] ..fuckin.. okay.

POPPY: I mean, it wouldn’t be much harder than liftin’ a couple envelopes, huh? Pickin’ up a li’l girl like me. It’s hardly even worth showin’ off at this point, when you’ve already managed guys so much bigger! But might as well just so you can say honestly you’ve managed the full collection, right?

EDDIE: [groaning, the sound of a flask being taken out of his jacket and quickly swigged from] Mng, okay, c’mere.. I figure I can... Yeah, yup, here we-- [grunt of effort] Hup-- all right-- little more– shit–

POPPY: [under Eddie’s struggle] watch the talons hun.

[Big, forceful, weightlifter-style exhale as he gets Poppy lifted; little “woah-ho-ho!” from Poppy.]

FRANK: [overlapping others] YEE-EES!!

JULIE: [overlapping others, little applause] Hell yeah!

BARNABY: [overlapping others, gasp of fear, his voice muffled behind his paw] oh Mary please..

WALLY: [overlapping others] Oh, now Poppy’s up there.

[One solid beat. Then, sound of Eddie collapsing and taking Poppy down with him, with a loud “OOF!” from both of them. A terrified yip from Barnaby]

POPPY: Ahah! Holy crap, I don’t even have a joke about that! That was awesome! You okay, Ed?

EDDIE: [Groan, sarcasm in his normal monotone as he speaks into the dirt] Oh yes, just fuckin peachy, augh..

JULIE: I still say it’s just passable. Ma, get over here! I bet I can lift you over my head and carry you to Sally’s window to show her!

POPPY: [snort-laugh] Yeah, all right.

BARNABY: [gasping in fear] NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. I’m ending this right now!

FRANK: Oooh, let’s go see if Eddie can lift Howdy next! We can save Home for the big finish!! Sally can watch from her window!

JULIE: Not if I can lift them first!! [her voice becomes distant as she continues to talk, fading until shes not heard anymore] I bet Howdy weighs less because his heart is so empty! Jackass won’t even see it coming. I bet I can carry Home all the way to…

POPPY: Well, I know what I’m doin’ with the rest of my day. C’mon, li’l buddy, let’s catch this party!

WALLY: Eddie’s going to lift up Home? That’s the most. We can go to Howdy’s together and Home can pick out his own hot dog.

EDDIE: Ain’t the first time I spent the day on the dirt path. [spoken in the dirt, his voice muffled]

[Long beat. Just Eddie and Barnaby are left.]

BARNABY: [soft, concerned voice of a father] Oh, Eddie..

EDDIE: What? [his voice louder as he lifted his head from the dirt]

BARNABY: [small chuckle of delight, then whispers] Thank you for entertaining Frank.

EDDIE: ..I don’t know what you’re talking about.

BARNABY: I just think its funny.. If anyone else had asked you to lift people up you wouldn’t have done it, hm? EDDIE: [laugh] Tch. [groan as he attempts to stand] Alright, yeah.. Figured Frank would get a good laugh out of that..

BARNABY: A good laugh? [the sound of struggle as he lifts Eddie to his feet] I think you made his day, Edward. You, quite literally, bent over backwards for him.

EDDIE: [an unusual sound of joy in his voice] Yeah.. well.. Frank makes mine. It’s the least I can do. [the sound of him brushing the dirt off his clothes]

BARNABY: I’m sure he’d be happy to hear that.

Eddie: [a sigh of defeat] mm..

BARNABY: Well, I’m going to go inside and get my caine so I can join everyone else without limping all day.. I’ll see you in a second.

EDDIE: seeya.. [silence as Barnaby walks away, a few sounds of dirt being kicked around by Eddie]

real question, I was watching something and they pointed out that because a show is free on youtube, it’s production quality cost is lower than say if it was on iqiyi or viki. do you agree with that?

🤔 I have no idea how the entertainment industry work. So, please don't kill me on this 🙃. But, personally, I don't think so.

Some of my favorite "free" productions on YT were amazing in terms of editing, cinematography and overall production. With other platforms, sometimes they do have "special clips" that are not available on YT (Iqiyi especially) but I don't necessarily think these platforms have better production quality than YT. Plus, their subs are atrocious 😑😑😑. If I am going to pay for a platform, I want top notch subtitles!!! Netflix is better than others (in terms of subs) but due to geographical restriction - most of the time, you won't get the series easily if is only on Netflix.

I also say "free" because even when it is available easily on YT, these series have sponsors, which help supplement the budget for the shows.

I personally think a top notch series is very much dependent on the right director(s), casting, script and editing/production team. You can get the best sponsors (i.e. heaps of money) and still a subpar production - and again, please don't kill me on this, but I think My Love Mix Up (MLMU) Thai version is a perfect example of this. I like GemFourth and the other cast members were also amazing. But the sponsors' products and the way these were incorporated to MLMU killed the joy for me while watching the show (I also have issue with how they colored the show, but that's me personally). I got the same feeling when I watched Vice Versa (VV), which aired at the same period as The Eclipse (TE). VV had the flashier budget while TE had peanuts in comparison. I like JimmySea and VV has an interesting script. However, I got irritated by the way the show incorporated their sponsored products. E.g during the proposal scene - didn't they use Lay chips? (and I couldn't help but feel that is a terrible way to use the product). I can't help compared it to TE (where they don't even have brand on the soda cans they used).

But when the production is done right, the add-on sponsor products can enhance the series (e.g. My School President - the way GemFourth playfully flirt with that fried chicken product? How cute!).

Some other productions from GMMTV that are "freely" available on YT, which I think are sleekly done include Last Twilight (even though I did not like the ending) & MLC by P'Aof, NVLM & Only Friends by P' Jojo (yes, the latter's ending may be divisive for people, but Jojo and his team always deliver in terms of cinematography/editing). For non-BLs, Enigma and Midnight Museum (the special effects!!) are great to watch. And for currently airing shows - Peaceful Property production (so far) has been on point.

And if we are looking beyond GMMTV - Gap The Series (as an example) is available on YT (and from my understanding, the production is nicely done!)

I've cleaned up the faces on the Voerman sisters

No download link, I'm asking Wesp5 to put these in the Unofficial Patch. (Also, this post includes out-of-context spoilers for the sisters. Yes, really. I know the game is going on 20 years old, but I regularly see posts (mostly on reddit) of people playing the game for the first time).

Making this post to document the changes I made, for anyone interested in that.

The Voerman sisters have the same face as VV, but their textures don't properly line up with the UV map. So, referencing Therese's UV map, and VV's face texture a little, I moved around parts of Therese's face on her face texture. Moved her lips, the bottom of her nose and her left eye. Also tweaked the top of her upper lip and the bottom of her lower lip to straighten them out horizontally. Had to clean up her skin around the parts I moved, and then the biggest change was reshaping her nostrils to better match the UV map. I did this with mostly the Warp Transform tool in GIMP. (I gather the matching tool in Photoshop is called Liquify).

As for her UV map, I edited it at the top of her upper lip, the bottom of her lower lip, and around her nostrils to better match both the texture and the topology on the model. I also edited it around the eye socket to fit it to the texture, and then I had to clean up the UV around the socket to even everything out.

Don't mind the eyes, Blender is stretching her iris texture across her entire eyeball. It looks fine in-game.

For Jeanette's face texture, I referenced Therese's updated face texture to match everything. I had to move Jeanette's lips, the bottom of her nose, her eyebrows and her left eye. I could copy over Therese's updated nose using the healing tool. (The healing tool is witchcraft). For the UV map I could re-create the editing I did on Therese. It took ages because I have to do it one UV vert at a time, but the UV maps remain an exact match. While I was here, I moved her right pigtail. It was too far forward, disjointing it from it's jigglebones as well as her hair texture.

For Tourette's face texture, I copied over Therese's updated nose with the healing tool. Then I pasted the left half of Jeanette's face onto a copy of Therese's face, copied the smeared lipstick over from Tourette, and fixed the middle of her face by copying the texturing from the Tourette texture, via the healing tool. I had to flip her face, because Tourette's face is flipped horizontally on her UV map. No idea why. The UV map editing is, again, copied from Therese.

Howdy fam!!

This is a post that i’ve been wanting to make for a while so!!! Finally fucking sat down and did it lmao

Considering we’re past the halfway point of ATWLP and over 125k words written for the universe, I thought I would share some writing advice and tidbits I’ve picked up along the way!! (especially for you baby writers out there) (we’re ignoring the fact that I only broke my five year writing hiatus like seven months ago)

Don’t force yourself to write linearly

If you’re dragging your feet along writing sections just to get to a certain scene in your head and losing motivation, just… write the scene you wanna write. This might be specific adhd oriented advice, but you gotta use your juices when you have them. 

I’ve recently posted a chapter that I wrote all the way back in November. Did I have to edit some parts in light of changes I made to the outline and the way my blorbos have developed? Yes, but that’s way easier than starting it from scratch and losing all of my ideas when the scene was first bouncing around my head.

Outline outline outline… but don’t be a slave to it

Sometimes all I can manage the energy for is a long series of bullet points outlining a chapter, but it makes it SO much easier to sit down and type everything out properly later.

I also find that having a main outline for my entire story helps me from falling into plotlines that I don't know how to get out of or losing motivation for a fic because I haven't figured out the end goal for my characters. It's easy to sit down and work on a chapter because, for the most part, I already know how it's going to end up.

Having said that, sometimes your characters are stinkasses and decide to completely break away from what you had planned, and that’s okay! Understanding how you can and cannot shove your blorbos around for the sake of plot is a part of learning how to be a better writer.

Don’t delete your writing!

Chances are if you hate a section, it’ll read a million times better after you set it down for a few hours. Us writers can be so incredibly critical of ourselves, but resist the urge to select all and backspace!!! If anything, leaving a section you hate allows you to come back and edit it into something way better instead of starting from scratch again.

If you have to delete a section that just doesn’t fit in the story anymore, still save it!! I have a bits and pieces doc that houses all my deleted scenes that have been revived in later chapters. You never know how deleted scenes might help you pad out future parts of your story.

If you’re a literature snob (like me) and want to just flat out improve your craft… you gotta do your homework

You will always become a better writer the more you write and for those just looking to get out some emotions or have fun, that is perfectly fine! Ignore me! You’re already doing fantastic, look at you go!

But if you’re the type of person to read a fic and be like… “wow, that was better quality than most published books. how do i get to that level??” this is for you

When you’re reading, regardless of what it is, make a mental (or physical!) note of the things you like and dislike.

 Ex: How does the author portray a certain emotion? How do they lay out the scene? What different aspects of characterization stick out to you? What’s the word choice like?

Never gonna bash on anyone who just wants to read for enjoyment, but when you start to exercise that muscle I /promise/ you that your writing will improve that much faster. (It really is annoying how the fucking rhetorical analysis skills they teach you in highschool help, but they do.)

Ages ago I went to this conference for young writers and in one of the seminars I went to, this pair of authors talked about this spreadsheet they set up to better lay out the aspects of writing they really loved or wanted to avoid in their genre. I think this is vv important when you’re planning out longer pieces of writing; you don’t want to get stuck in a trope you hate!

Watch critiques of books!

Booktube is super fucking great for this. I’m personally a video essay bitch, so I’ll sit and watch a three hour long video of someone dissecting a novel and giving a review. That shit will help you with everything from learning how to construct longer and cohesive plots to avoiding certain pitfalls that may turn an audience away from your work. 

Rachel Oates is one of my forever faves and Alizee is a youtuber that I’ve just recently stumbled upon but love all the same.

 I WILL SING THE PRAISES OF OVERLYSARCASTICPRODUCTIONS ALL DAY EVERY DAY.

They have really excellent videos that go into the different tropes and all the ways they can present in stories, whether it be good or bad. This helps you get familiar with the building blocks of a narrative and decide things like wanting to subvert a trope, build upon the popular ones, or even reject them all together. Fic is basically built on fandom-wide tropes, so I think it’s good to be familiar with them.

Just like artists, we gotta do our studies, too

Back when I was a infant writer (i.e. in eighth grade) me and my friends would find different writing prompts on pinterest and spend a few hours working on them before sharing what we wrote. Even if it's not for a larger work, it is /really/ good practice to describe scenery in a picture or come up with a character on the fly and explore how they interact in a situation.

It’s is the literary equivalent of drawing a hand instead of putting it in a pocket so you didn’t have to deal with it

Write messy! Write fast! Write garbage that you’re going to delete in five minutes! You’ll be surprised about the gems that come out of doing this. Literally some of my favourite lines have come out of a frenzied 10 minute keyboard mashing session.

Don’t be afraid of critique but know the difference between that and simply being hard on yourself.

 I think this is probably the biggest thing I’ve struggled with as I’ve gotten back into writing. Before I started posting, I had about five chapters saved up ‘cause I was agonising over making everything perfect. Do I see, six months later, things I know I could have done better? Yes, but! I wouldn’t have been able to grow or develop as an author if I didn’t take that first step of posting and moving on to other parts of the story.

There is a time and place for critiquing and editing your own work and seeing where you can improve, but you also gotta meet yourself where you’re at. We’re not going to be Shakespeare overnight. Getting better is a process, baby! Embrace the fact that if you’re embarrassed about your work years or even months down the line, that means you’re growing as a writer.

And remember stinkies, any creation is good creation. Don’t go comparing hits or kudos or likes and being down on yourself, the act of creation is an important part of the human experience!!! Even if the only thing you ever put out is a 100 word drabble about lightning mcqueen making love to bowser, i’ll be proud of you.

today was a story of hope, patience and trust. Last weekend, i am loaded with school works due to my preliminary exams plus im also a secretary in our organization. Today, monday supposedly was the submission of accreditation files and my prelim exam for a major subject. Yesterday i am filled with emotions, I've been over my laptop the whole day, busy scanning, editing and filling up all the forms for accreditation. I was planning on finishing them all because today was the deadline but due to some miscommunications and stressful events i didn't finish the files yesterday so i ended up breaking down and crying over my ate's side. Im telling pat that im so stressed and couldn't do this anymore. I was crying and laying down because im so tired and stressed. overwhelmed on what to do next. im scolded by my senior, kasi he was shocked by the total price na nagastos ko sa print. he told me that next before i make a move is to consult him muna. gaslighting myself was the only thing i did as i rest. my family was so eager to push me na magpahinga na muna, not me holding back my tears because i don't want to feel that thing anymore its reminding me of the trauma i had before. every move i make yesterday i feel like im going to end up dropping out again because of anxiety. But yesterday, pat messaged me that he will go here as i messaged him na "ayoko na, im tired. all i want is to cry." he was at his friend's bday but as soon as he came back from candelaria he headed right away here sa house. fast forward today. i woke up vv early para maabutan ko na ako ang kaunahan sa printing shop sa bayan but i ended up waiting for a long period of time & then my professor announced that our exam will be movex tomorrow so yay because wala pa akong review and all. going back, I had to think of another plan because pag iniintay ko sa iisang printing shop matatagalan ako lalo (i need to xerox all the printed files from yesterday para less magastos) so i messaged khaila and asked her if she is not busy kasi magpapasama ako. and yes she's not busy. so im with her we roam around quezon avenue just to look for a book binding shop and printing shop. afterwards, we went to sacre kasi dun daw yung may bookbind. yes we were naligaw kasi nalimutan nung senior ko kung san yung place imagine walking around merchan st. wearing a full white uniform in this heat. then we end up there para mag pa bookbind. dumating na yung asst. secretary namin, she helped us and stuff then we decided to split ways. she went back to school to ask the Office of Student Affairs kung pede tomorrow mag pasa ng accreditation files. thank You Lord they agreed na pede. afterwards khaila & i went home. rest a bit and yay for nanay for treating us mcdo. at 2pm we went back sa printing shop para kunin yung bookbind. All i did was to pray na sana tapos na lahat ng bookbind para madala ko na sa school lahat. thankfully, pagdating namin dun tapos na lahat & na dala ko na sa school. my senior was there & he was light no stress at all.

before going out the house all i felt was anxiety. gusto ko nalang wag tumuloy sa pag aasikaso kasi baka mamaya mapagalitan na naman ako. but no, today was a Jesus encounter. He made everything light and assured me that my stress will be gone away. So He sent me pat to be there because He knows that pat is my safe place, he even told me that he wanted to attend the mass too sadly we didn't make it because of the traffic but we still went there, another one is He sent me khaila & claire for they helped me get through this "pag-aasikaso ng red book day" The Lord helped me today, from waking me up until ending this day. He made sure that everything will be smooth sailing. we had a smooth talk with the osa, we had a smooth conversation with our organization's adviser & we had a smooth settlement with my senior. The Lord truly reminded me that the anxiety of my heart will be replaced with gratefulness of my soul. Bonus that my family will always be my back up. Nanay for the mcdo, ate tet for the gentle pat in the back that its not my fault and tatay for assuring me that everything i need is in that place.

forever grateful for these grace and life. i don't know if im giving back enough to Him. but I know that everything is possible because of Him.

💘Is there any posted fic you want to rework/re-edit/re-write

Outside of almost all of my JtHM works, there is the singular fic I made for the AHS fandom that I posted, that I know now (as a more seasoned writer) has a lot of issues, and even though I posted it when I was 14 or something, I still wince at my past self a little, I was in a really bad place. I still love AHS, I'm just not tuned in enough to the lore and shit to actually rewrite it without making a mess of myself. Eventually though!

💥Find your least kudos'd fic - say something wonderful about it

I have quite a few under 5 kudos that span some years, but the one with only a single kudos (no accompanying bookmarks or comments) is for the Azure series I dropped after I realized oc/canon content really isn't liked in the JtHM fandom (unless it's Scriabin) so it only got two works, and one person liked both (thank you vampriejunkie).

I really liked the concept that Edgar has a guardian angel, that follows him through each death he has. It was supposed to be this whole thing where the angel, Azure, partners with him and he gets a happy ending and actually lives past 21-25. There are so many ideas I still have for the both of them, and I drew vv rad art of Azure a few times. But I won't be doing anything for JtHM unless specifically requested anymore, so I don't think Azure will be picked up again.

💎Why is writing important to you?

It's gotten me through years of emotional neglect and abuse, and it shows (most of which was posted to Wattpad, yes, I'm serious.) If you take a look at how I used to do things in fic (if you can find it) you can see almost exactly what I read in fandom, what I took from it, and how long I had that mentality for. I used to think a whole host of things were okay as long as it was happening to me (which resulted in many friends distancing and leaving, in turn unintentionally worsening the behaviour) because I was groomed by family and family friends into believing it was okay (I used to be heavily into Supernatural, take a wild guess on what I thought was okay without any consideration that it was my situation at the time that influenced my response to people telling me no, it wasn't.) and that shaped how I wrote.

It was my only outlet because being on US disability benefits ™ in one of the lowest ranking states when it comes to mental health is the worst. After years of therapists and social workers that were only with me for a few months at a time kept leaving, I turned to writing. I'm finally in a spot (while still not ideal) where I can actually engage with art and writing in a more balanced way, because learning how to not digitally self harm was extremely difficult to do by myself, but I did it, even if there are slip ups sometimes (which is normal, just like any negative coping mechanism/addiction recovery) and I still write very angsty things, but at least I know what I'm doing with the themes I want to present now, and I'll learn with the ones I don't.

Friend Carmen has read over a current Monster fic involving Wolfgang, that I'm not done with, but I'm extremely excited to see where it goes! I also have one in the works with Steiner and Dieter, that I'm almost done with, and should be posted eventually. I miss writing for Monster, but the little meow meows of the Revachol Citizens Militia have me by the neck rn, so those will be a while yet. I have so many Monster wips actually, maybe I'll pick one up and dust it off in the meantime to throw seeds at my friends (affectionate).

i just wanna add onto this because ada's spectre will always have me giddy and sad and so excited about her. she's my everything. also be warned i didnt do much research, pls lmk if any of this is scientifically wrong so i can edit it

also i'm calling the rich guy who killed her tamerlane for simplicity's sake (this is a reference to the poem she's from (called Tamerlane), where tamerlane is the narrator and her lover)

cw for some grotesque stuff about dead bodies, some mentions of sexuality

so as to the way she's held together by shoddy stitching, it's my opinion that tamerlane actually hacked her up and hid her pieces in different places to avoid getting caught. this would also explain why some parts of her are so much more decomposed than others, because swamps (more specifically low oxygen conditions) can slow decomposition a lot. this would make sense as to why her arms and legs are still mostly intact (just a bit dirty/moldy) while her torso, head, toes and fingers are all bone. her being torn to pieces would also make sense for the way that she moves, stretching the threads in her stitches and dislodging entire parts of her body. also the way her jaw dislodges when she screams could hint that he mightve torn it off.

i also think the bones on her spectre are super interesting: theres fish, snakes, a coyote skull on her hat, and i think some dog skulls as well (could be wrong, i didn't properly ID the skulls). its not totally clear to me whether any of the bones are animate, i'm assuming not but they do look to be screaming in certain panels (could be part of her earsplitting scream power, maybe not). but these bones could be other creatures that died in the same place, or even (this is a stretch ik) creatures tamerlane hunted (rich people still hunted for sport in the 30s i think, although i'm positive that poor people hunted for sustenance during the great depression, so then again the animals might've been killed by ada or her family for food)

the RIBBONS: oh my gosh ok i'm GIDDY about these okok so. if you somehow didn't notice the parallels between annabel lee and ada by this point, let me enlighten you. annabel and ada are paralleled a LOT. they're both single-minded and obsessive about love, they're both manipulative, they've both dabbled in playing both sides, they both have self-worth issues and have been victims of society as women (although ada also had the disadvantage of poverty). it's my slightly delusional opinion that annabel dislikes ada in part because she sees herself in her (ex. the panel where ada is all like "is there anything better than love?" and annabel grimaces and looks down) in any case the RIBBONS GUYS!! i don't have to tell yall that ribbons are constantly connected with annabel, and the way that HER fear sequence involved being wrapped in them. ada having ribbons on her skirts AND HAT (did yall notice that there is a giant ribbon tied AROUND HER NECK) (also in her HAIR. in spectre and in regular form the ribbon in her hair!!!! oh yall are not ready for me to start yapping about the significance of ada giving lenore her ribbon in the manor you're NOT ready) but anyway!!! ribbon literally around her neck, just like annabel in her fear sequence, could very well symbolize ada's own experience with the disempowerment of being a woman, the way she was not allowed to say anything (ex. tamerlane speaking over her as she bled out, no one respecting her, everyone overlooking her INCLUDING ANNABEL (ex. when ada says she might've underestimated lenore post-maze and annabel is SHOCKED) montresor being shocked by like. everything she does lmfao.) ok toooo be fair i'm not totally 100% on what the ribbons represent but i know they relate to annabel somehow I SENSE IT (insert conspiracy theorist gif)

but ye i wanted to mention that. NOW BACK TO ADA

the way she DIED: humiliated by someone who she thought loved her, certainly, but there is also a theory that she was pregnant when she died! to support this: she was axed in the stomach, told that she gave tamerlane "no choice" but to kill her. also:

ada didn't die in childbirth, but if she was pregnant she was killed directly (or like. roughly around) the womb.

AND AND AND (from An Encyclopedia of Fairies by Katharine Briggs in the section on banshees, quoted from Memoirs of Lady Fanshawe (from an alleged first-hand banshee encounter from the 1600s)

her subtype being Hag was foreshadowed when she taunted lenore post-maze and called her a hag, shrieking old crone etc (oh ada. oh ada no.)

her powers:

earsplitting scream is pretty standard procedure for banshees, i believe, not much to be said that i know of

mark of the grave: i don't think we've seen this one in action yet, but banshee encounters are very often premonitions of death from what i can see online, so she may be able to either mark someone for death or perhaps predict who is the next to die (could she have something to do with lenore's curse, perchance? did she mark her? or monty? maybe? i mean she did touch both of them and prospero in her spectre form quite a bit [WHAT IF SHE MARKED LENORE WITH THE RIBBON]) she also took prospero's cravat, it's unclear if that will come back but he has another one so maaaaybe not (would be neat tho) (ada is the best prospero hairdresser)

and of course, fear itself, her ability to create fear hallucinations:

i find the romantic/intimate undertones of this ability of hers FASCINATING. let me explain. in order to trigger this ability her target has to be staring into her eyes, and she often holds their face in her hands to guide their eyes to hers, in the same motion as though she were about to kiss them (although she ONLY does this with the men who MAY I MENTION are her love interests. it's kind of so so so so so interesting that its like she's taking the power back from these men who have been using her, disrespecting her, and underestimating her. also maaaybe she's violating their fears like this as a kind of late and misplaced revenge on tamerlane for what HE did to her and how HE violated her? am i insane perhaps? maybe.) but okok so. so. when she uses this ability she's almost flirty about it. ex. holding prospero gently, saying he's cute scared, face all up in lenore's and being all "not as brave as you pretend?~", and do i really have to explain how this is flirty? vvvv

also its sososososososososoooo interesting how she didn't do this with annabel, and annabel was also the only one who broke free of the illusion on her own. coincidence? I THINK NOT. like yes annabel has mental fortitude for miles and yes she's queen of dissociation, but i also think the illusion was weaker with her because of the clinical nature with which ada was looking at her, and the anger and impersonality when she grabbed her. also ada respects her like a lot. idk i think it has something to do with it. also the way monty's was like a FULLON hallucination where she wasnt even present. i would posit that's because of the strong emotion ada feels for him, and the romantic/intimate nature, again.

THE COMMON THREADS IN THE HALLUCINATIONS:

HANDS: the hands crawling up prospero, the handprints on monty + his mother's hands, and lenore's hands over annabel. (also the fewer amount of hands on annabel -> weaker hallucination perchance. but i digress). this goes once again along with the kind of intimate nature of ada's spectre. ada, someone presumably used for her body a lot in her life (at the very least by tamerlane, though i would bet money he wasn't the only one), having the power to make other people feel the fear she probably felt, through the use of hands over them. idk. idk its just a theory.

IMMOBILIZATION: this may be in part a freeze response on the part of her victims, but all of the hallucinations we've seen so far have included some kind of immobilization. annabel tied up with her ribbons and lenore, prospero rooted in place and being dissected by hands, monty being immobilized by fear the second his mother appears, wrapped around him and for the first time in the entire comic we see him submit to someone. to anyone. also his fight response is so interesting because his instinct is to fight anyone who is scaring him, EXCEPT FOR HIS MOTHER. sorry i'm. insane. he's so interesting. oh also lenore. personally i think her immobility WAS her fear response, and that her greatest fear was losing control of her body and being unable to help any of her loved ones because she literally couldnt even control herself but thats a whole nother ballpark.

aand i think thats all i can think of rn. im sure i'll come back to this later, ada is my everything and her spectre is so beyond gorgeous. i would kiss her right on the skull <3

ada's spectre, and why i'll likely always feel sad about it

here is the promised analysis/talk about ada's spectre. going to preface this by saying i obviously don't know the true intent behind everything and her design, i just like to look, giggle and then make sad little observations which just help me love this silly webcomic even more. so if you disagree with me on something– totally ok! i love to learn and i love to see different interpretations.

there's also a few bits i missed out because i wrote this all last night in a bit of a haze, and i cannot be bothered to expand on some of my ideas, especially when it's just stuff like "BROS SO PARANOID AND RAW RIGHT NOW".

anyways, here we go :) @mugcereal this one's for u pookie <3

so i think with ada's spectre, we first need to look at the instance as to how she gets it, because that always makes things way more sad!

to specify, she turns into her spectre at episode 69, and i think it's really sad how she does it. she basically gets a string of roasts from prospero that go along the lines of calling her "conceited" "twadry" and "... and stupid!" – effectively throwing back in ada's face what she believes everyone thinks of her.

(obviously, as a very big and glaring sidenote, i believe prospero is aro/ace or just aromantic so OBVIOUSLY i am not bashing him for this. bros told her so many times that he doesn't want to be with her, let alone to be touched. that is a flaw in ada's character and is a reminder to us on the importance of boundaries!!!!)

so, ada is basically there, collapsed on the floor in a robe– effectively showing the most intimate and private part of herself as an insecure and lonely girl. and that's when she transforms.

i think it's interesting to understand how this most likely links to her life and how she died. so we know she was killed with an axe, most likely by the man she fell in love with and worked for, and how prospero's words in this situation, hurt her just the same as the words before her death. why?

because they remind ada of what she knows and fears she is: just a stupid, fake and cheap person who will never have the same status and respect as the people she pretends to be and surrounds herself by.

i think it's also interesting that she's clutching her stomach/torso here, and correct me if i'm wrong but that could be a potential signal to the part of her that was axed to death (?). no idea if that's a good shout or not but it's what i first thought!

anyways! now we move onto her spectre design!

first of all, her spectre design eats. like just a personal side note, i love it. it's just so gorgeous and i don't care if she's terrifying to some because to ME? to me, she's my gorgeous little pookie who can scream and show people their worst fears and she looks amazing whilst she does it <3

ok anyways, actual design.

to first understand her design, i thought i'd show you what banshee's traditionally in folklore look like!

typically, they are described in two ways. the first way is a youthful women with long black hair, blue eyes and just super pale. this description could also lose the blue eyes and just keep the black hair– either way the first depiction of a banshee is a super young woman.

this is not the one we're focussing on today folks!

we're going to focus on the second depiction. a hag/ old woman, with red cheeks, a grey cloak and a green dress, often seen to be combing her hair. banshee's throughout folklore are known to wail, scream and cry when a family member had died. to most, the banshee was a sign that death was coming to your household and they are known in myths and folklore as a predictor of death.

now, hold onto the green dress and look at ada's design real quick for me.

here we see a lot of green, which yay! definitely shows signs it comes from the second depiction. i think, on top of it being a nod to the second depiction, i think it could also be an allusion to something else: jealousy.

green symbolism in media can often vary, from meaning new life, luck and also jealousy. and i think if we take in the things ada screams whilst in her spectre form, such as this from episode 82:

you see there definitely is some sort of jealousy there, but this isn't something i necessarily want to focus on, it's just an observation i made that may or may not be true!

anyways, to continue, i want to look at ada's outfit when she's a banshee. i'm going to basically be making my notes i took last night look nicer.

(keep in mind that when i wrote these, my ideas were literally bouncing off my brain and sometimes they're a bit contradictory, but i think that's the beauty of my crack theory analysis!)

i think the act of almost showing her bones to the outside, there's a level of rawness to ada we don't usually see. her spectre form essentially gives her the power to scream out her anger, and by seeing her bones it's almost as if to say this is the ada she doesn't show people. this is the ada that she keeps to herself because god forbid anybody love her (because in life and death it's become abundantly apparent to her that nobody does seem to love that ada).

but then, what i thought was also a super cool thing as how the bones almost act like a corset!

then i got sad because i looked at the bows, and because something dawned on me and it made me start to frown. there was a sad realization to me as i looked at ada's spectre design that even in this all powerful form, she hasn't lost her insecurities, they just become more prevellant. because for all of the traditional wrinkles, hag-like appearance a banshee is meant to have, ada barely has any.

obviously this could be in part to character design and stuff, and yeah probably– but let me be sad!

because ada carries her frills and bows from life here because she doesn't want to be ugly, she doesn't want to be this creeping monster who rips apart people. because if she's not got her intelligence or status or anything going for her, she has her appearance and by god she's not going to let that go to waste. so here her spectre form is, a banshee.

so what must ada do? she must takes her frills and keep her insecurities, her fears and her crippling need to be loved.

another aspect which is super interesting is the stitching on her body. one one hand, it could be an allusion to her violent death, suggesting the man she fell in love with didn't just stop at axing her once, but just kept on fucking going (which, you know: fuck you, whoever you are).

but on the other hand, it could be a metaphor for ada's thinly veiled facade she puts on of being a prim and proper lady (which we actually, interestingly enough, see she looses a lot the more time she spends with montresor– opting to take parts of his language like "ain't" and "beggin'". this sort of leads on from previous ideas people have made of ada willing to change herself to be loved. she swaps civility for the wild wild west all for a bit of love).

ada offers up parts of herself in this metaphor. that's what she always does. she offers herself to the rich man she fell in love with, she offers herself up to prospero (again, look at the. side note. bro wasn't wrong for rejecting her he literally can't like her) and she offers herself up to the acolytes and she fucking barks for them (because i'm not over that).

piece by piece, she strips away everything she is until she literally is just skin and bone. and once she's torn herself apart, she needs to stitch herself back together– because it's against the facade she's put on to look so broken and messy. and so she repeats the cycle again, giving more and more until she is literally hanging on by a thread.

her powers are also super cool. traditionally, as i said, banshees wail when a family member is soon to die/has died, and is often like an omen/predictor of death. so yeah, ada having a banshee scream makes sense. but the whole 'fear itself' is also super cool. i kind of like that she has this– because its sort of satisfying for her, the girl who's been pushed over but still comes running back, to watch as people become paralysed with fear. idk, retribution or whatever.

i'm going to leave you with this not very profound thing i wrote last night (and then just some other mumblings):

i think that although spectres are super powerful and also just a very fantastic concept, they're also fragile. spectres are quite literally the monster inside of you. yet here ada's monster is, and with all her bows and revamped dress of a banshee (or potentially an allusion to her life as a maid) she tries desperately to be anything but that. because to here it's ugly and it's too much of her on display. and with some much of you on display comes the very fear that if you are hated, disliked or something repulsive, you no longer have anything to blame on anybody else. you just have yourself to blame.

(as morella says here in episode 88).

i'm not saying ada isn't deeply flawed, because she is. she has so much fucking baggage and insecurities that they literally forbid her from doing the right thing sometimes. i don't think she's a good person, but i also think that she has the opportunity to be a good person/ do a semi-good/ non-bad thing, and all she has to do is take it. but i also think it's nice how that's shown in her spectre design.

and, you know, if none of this makes sense, that's also fine!

anyways, yeah. somebody tell me never to make a random analysis at night again because it's a bit of a bitch to translate in the morning.
