" A Serbian Film "

I decided to give "A Serbian Film" a watch too.

I didn't find subtitles in English, so I resorted to watching the whole 2-hour production as it was, only to later read the script. Frankly, the only thing the script helped me with was understanding the character, since I didn't know Milos and Marko were brothers.

Apart from that, you could watch this without subtitles, since the dialogue isn't playing much of a role as big as what's shown.

In most films, I'm more interested in two aspects, the cinematography and the psychological aspects of a character, which I try to focus on most of the time.

Things I picked apart :

= the close-ups on the face, which also play into showing off the emotions of said characters.

= the use of warm light on Milos. Despite the horrific scenes he's placed in, there's always some soft or warm light casting on him.

= the very dead colorizing sets the tone. Of course, this gets changed towards the end, while Milos is having a mental breakdown the whole colorizing changes to a bloody red and the camera angle becomes more crooked.

= every building (apart from Milos's home) looks just like a labyrinth, which depicts his state of mind too. He's lost. We (the watchers) are too.

= another thing I really liked was the fusion between povs. We're seeing through both the porn set video camera and also the outside one that shows how the movie is proceeding.

Of course, sounds and music play a big role too, those being the core of this "horror" movie. It's meant to impale a certain feeling into the watcher. I doubt they would have inflicted the same emotions without it.

I feel that the "horror" aspect of this film is the brutality of everything, and how, some, find excitement in the worst things possible. Humans are hideous beings.

Roughly by the 1-hour mark, Milos is clearly lost within his mind. Presumably, the flashing images are not only used to inflict horror but to depict the mind of Milos. The guilt easily eats him from inside. Vukmir, who likes to play "God", is the root that sent Milos spiraling. It's clear they turned him into a monster.

He's insane, but not by choice.

And frankly, I doubt there's redemption from this state of mind.

This kind of movie leaves you wondering how much you have to torture a man to get him into a state of Bestiality. Of course, this movie is heavily implying that drugs played a big role in it, but wouldn't the human brain be sick enough to find those certain aspects of animal behavior familiar?

If you're looking for closure, there's none of that here and it will never be. I think the right closure for this is simply death. And to the viewer's surprise, even after everyone is dead, the cameras are still rolling.

Terrifyingly unique.

And this was, "A Serbian Film", in all its twisted glory.

Details that I thought are worth mentioning :

= the lil bunny with a vest on that not only has a keychain but also a big plush.

= all of those men who worked in the "industry" wear loop earrings (smaller in size)

= Suffocated by cock, interesting.

= the obvious physical changes that match the mental ones.

= the lights in Vukmir's house are booties.

= was it necessary to stick his dick in that man's eye? I don't I don't know.

= the labels on the cassettes that are childish doodles. Such simple drawings, for such imagery.

Famous Vukmir's victim speech : the cristallization of the whole movie

This is what I will be starting with : Vukmir’s victim speech, analyzed under an angle that I had been thinking about after reading an interview of Srdjan Spasojevic, the director of A Serbian Film. The link to this interview is at the bottom, and I will be quoting it regularly. To me, this scene is the central point of this whole movie’s metaphor, the part where you get the keys to interprete the floods of violence you will be witnessing for the rest of the movie.

For those who have never seen or heard about A Serbian Film, here is a quick, non spoiling recap : Miloš is a retired pornstar in post Yougoslavia wars Serbia, who lives with his wife and son, but they are getting shorter and shorter on money. Leija, a former coworker of his, tells him about a man, Vukmir, who wants to work with him and is ready to pay him insane wages, but refuses to tell him about the kind of film they will be shooting, pleading that he wants Miloš to be as authentic as possible. But what Miloš doesn’t know, is that he signed up to play in a snuff movie.

As the speech and more generally the movie are about this idea of victim, we first have to set the power dynamics between the 2 characters, which is an easy guess : Vukmir represents the power figure. He is the one organizing the whole thing, he is the one who knows what is going to happen, and we learn from Miloš’ police officer brother Marko that he worked as a psychologist, worked for the state and state security. He is also the wealthy one, using his money as a tool of submission, and gaining money back from their exploitation. Above him is an elite, that “now is paying to watch that from the comfort of an armchair”, which is closely related to something Spasojevic calls “compassion porn” : watching the pain of others to make you empathize on these victims, while staying in your comfort zone, and make you feel like this is enough, that you are not in the oppressive ones since you cried with them, without feeling the burn of oppression. A sterile, sanitized empathy.

And from this power situation, Vukmir is proposing Miloš power as well, telling him “you’re the only one in this film who is not a victim”. But this filmic power, just like actual power, can only be obtained by crushing and exploiting other people. If Miloš is not the victim, it means he has to become the tormentor. Miloš here represents a man who is given the choice of being exploited, or exploiting others to settle his family.

And this exploitation, is represented by rape. Spasojevic says “The pornographic issue and the sense of pornography in this film is just used like our everyday life”. And just like in pornography, we will see exaggerated situations. The 1h long erections and the 5 per minute orgasm rate leave their place to systemic violences represented by extreme violence. In this world, exploiters don’t alienate you, humiliate you, destroy you, keep you in a vulnerable position and profit off of you by their usual ways. They don’t rape and kill you in the mind, but in the flesh. And this is what this horrendous newborn rape scene means : from the second you are born, you are fucked, you will be exploited, and there is no way you can defend yourself, to the point it will become your norm. 

And Spasojevic, through the words of Vukmir, shows this to the spectator. This exchange between Vukmir and Miloš is pretty significative of it :

Miloš : Just tell me, how does it all connect to pornography ?

Vukmir : No Miloš no no [...] Not pornography, but life itself !

As a movie about the action of filming, and presenting a character directing it through artistic views, it has to be conscious of it’s media, and Spasojevic is here telling us about his film. In this scene, we stand with Miloš : we are confused about all of this violence, and we don’t know where this is going. And Spasojevic is telling us to look over the first appearances, don’t focus on the primary, literal meaning of what you see and look for the metaphor. This movie is not talking about pornography, or snuff, or whatever : it is talking about life itself, and even though the extreme situations described in this movie are rare, the violence it is denouncing is much more common. This movie is not about violated fictional bodies, but about the “flesh and soul of a victim”. And when Vukmir tells Miloš that “you, me, this whole nation is a victim”, and Miloš answers that “We’re just too retarded, and I won’t be a victim because of that”, we have this same pattern of a person blaming individual responsibility, and placing themselves out of it, when spoken about systemic violences. Because we were taught they are normal, they shouldn’t be questioned, and even in the ones suffering from it, you will find some defending it.

This is what the movie is. It is the burning, screaming testimony of a victim. I have noticed similar patterns in a part of what Vukmir says, and something Spasojevic said in the interview.

Vukmir : Your whole life, you’re compelled to prove that you’re able to take care of yourself. To prove that you can shit, eat, fuck, drink, bleed, earn money… Do whatever it takes to survive, until you die.

Spasojevic :  In order to lead a normal life you have to become a prostitute, and sell your soul – and your ass – to the highest bidder in the name of feeding your family, and be viciously exploited by your boss and by rulers of your destiny.

Both of these speeches have this notion of battle, of being on your own doing what you can to just stay alive. This is what Miloš wanted to do : accepting this sketchy job to save his precarious family, even using the phrase “rent my dick” (very close to “sell your ass”) in a conversation with his wife earlier. And just like Miloš being brought back to perform as he tries to escape, you cannot escape this system and you cannot escape exploitation, as it will come to get you back with or without your consent.

And this testimony of a victim is ruled by an idea of authenticity, of sincerity. Spasojevic says his ambition with this movie was to “honestly express our feelings and problems in the most exact and direct way”. And just like Vukmir says, “the victim feels the most and suffers the best”. In all of it’s intensity, raw, cruel, victims scream and Spasojevic screams visually, metaphorically, with an untamed movie that disturbs. Spasojevic speaks about the issues of exploitation, amplified by this chilling, frightening, violent “power of a victim”.

A Serbian Film (Srpski Film) (2010) Directed by Srđan Spasojević This is one of those notorious movies you'll see on lists of disturbing or difficult to watch films. Because of its content it was banned in several countries or only released in a cut version. The movie is about Milos (Srđan Todorović), a retired porn star who is now struggling to make ends meet and provide for his wife and son. He is contacted by a mysterious filmmaker named Vukmir (Sergej Trifunović), who is willing to pay him a huge sum of money to participate in a film that he is making for very specialised clients. Milos reluctantly accepts, and soon finds himself part of increasingly disturbing and sinister situations. The filmmakers here seem to be trying to top themselves with each scene in disturbing the audience, and I think they succeed. I would suggest not looking at this movie as a commentary on the pornography industry or anything more profound, just watch it as a taut thriller, and you will appreciate it more. It's certainly well made and quite creepy, though at times you will feel guilty about what you are watching. And if you're sensitive in the slightest bit about watching sexual violence on screen, this movie is not for you. The performances are good, and I especially liked the music which adds to the creep factor. I'd actually watched the movie a few years before and now it was mentioned in some article I was reading, so I re-watched it (you can find it online). Week8 Blog5: BBFC Case Study & Film Censorship

Censorship means controlling a communication, which existed since classical antiquity. Lots of controversial films have been cut and banned by censorship bodies, local or state authorities, “Film censors tend to see themselves as classifiers, administering certificates that aim to control the type of audience that sees a particular movie. A film may be cut for unsuitable language or scenes” (Filmreference, 2018). A film censorship across the world is varying, it varies and depends on the different culture and the specific social norms in each country.

For instance, a well-known American film series, The Hunger Game, which earned $152.5 million in North America, was banned in Vietnam. Nguyen Thi Hong Ngat, a member of the National Film Board, said that the film was banned because of its violent scenes. Ngat explains, “The bloody scenes may be acceptable in America, but in Vietnam, they’re too violent and ruthless (Tuoitrenews, 2012).

Another example of a controversial film is A Serbian Film (2010).

A Serbian Film is about retired porn star Milos, who struggle to provide for his family. He has been offered enough money to set him up for life but, in return, has signed a Faustian pact with the director Vukmir. Milos will have no control over the scenes in which he appears (Independent, 2010). The film includes a graphic depiction of sex, violence, pornography and raping.

From the BBFC Case Studies, the BBFC gave the rate of A Serbian Film as “18 with cuts”, which is a high rate. After the BBFC team reviewed the film, it was concluded that in order to get the film classified at 18, several cuts were required. The BBFC's Guidelines nonetheless caution that 'portrayals of children in a sexualized or abusive context' may require compulsory cuts. The BBFC presented a cuts list to the film's distributor, which is 49 individual cuts across 11 scenes (BBFC, 2018). 

The examples of dishonorable scenes are the rape of the new-born baby and the scene in which the star kills a woman and continues to have sex with her headless body, which is very gross.

One US distributor fainted as he tried to leave a screening of A Serbian Film, he hit his head on the door and ended up needing stitches. His colleague who sat beside him said that “He was getting really disturbed and he felt he was going to faint. He tapped me on the shoulder and said I need to go. He got up and ended up fainting.” (Independent, 2010). That means A Serbian Film is really disturbance.

A Serbian Film was cut in the UK and banned in Spain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Norway and South Korea (Armitage & Fletcher, 2018).
