Cursed Vampire Worldbuilding

Everyone loves to make fun of sparklepires. They're a very mockable form of vampire. I, too, am going to mock them, but in a way that attempt to fit them into the broader tapestry of vampiredom.

The advantage of sparklepires is that they have some immunity to sunlight. The disadvantage is that this immunity translates into sparkling like a glitter bomb.

How did this happen? An experiment gone wrong? A curse? A disease? Well, let's examine the possibilities.

It could be a case of experimenting gone wrong. Maybe a vampire bit a fae to see what would happen and got sparkling results.

Or maybe a vampire pissed off the wrong witch and the result makes it harder for them to be stealthy during the day.

Or maybe it's just some kind of weird disease that crops up in vampires once in a while, either due to the quirky genetics of the Turned or from the vampire equivalent of inbreeding: if your bloodsuckers use/turn too small a genetic pool things go a bit wonky. In which case you could have other kinds of weirdness appearing, too. Let your imagination run wild.

However it happens, though, it becomes a VTD: Vampire Transmitted Disease. The afflicted vampire has a high chance of passing it on to anyone they turn.

Would vampires consider it worth the risk? Or would it be considered embarrassing? Given the advent of the Twilight series, it seems likely that a lot of fangers would consider it a bit embarrassing. Certain groups are actively trying to wipe it out. Unfortunately, between the sparkle-lovers and weird mystical mumbo-jumbo, it continues to pop up in all its glittery glory.

Sparklepires tend to be looked at a bit askance in the vampire world. A lot of research has been done on the subject, but every time some progress is made, some new quirk seems to pop up. Like the day Dracula turned someone and they sparkled. So mortify! Much enrage! Dracula clearly isn't a sparklepire, so what gives? (Conspiracy theorists absolutely try to draw lines so that Drac IS a sparklepire, but they all mysteriously die.)

Maybe it's a dormant trait in humans that only activates when they're turned. Maybe it's the gods themselves thumbing their noses at the vampires. Maybe it's the damned werewolves. Somehow.
