—Louis/Harry—
🩷 Teach me how to love by @perfectdagger
(E, 70k, one night stand) The one in which Harry is bad at sex and Louis spreads it all over town and to make up for it, decides to help him with no agenda of getting anything from it, but in the end, he ends up getting more than he bargained for.
🩷 My Other Half Was You by @lululawrence
(NR, 35k, small town au) Four years, seven months, and sixteen days after the day that changed everything, Louis turns a corner and literally runs into the man who just might change it all again.
🩷 Bitter Ends Turn Sweet by @allwaswell16
(E, 30k, songfic) It had been four years since Harry first heard the song his ex wrote about him and far longer since they broke up. He forgave Louis long ago, and now his life was focused on his career, his family, and especially his son, Max. But Louis was back in Chicago, after all this time, and he’s not an easy man to ignore.
🩷 Cowboy Like Me by Rearviewdreamer / @all-these-larrythings
(M, 29k, thief au) Going legit and starting over in a small town was supposed to solve all of Harry’s problems. That was until a string of robberies in wealthy towns brings him face-to-face with his rogue ex-partner and their dicey, unresolved past.
🩷 Every Lover's Got A Little Dagger In Their Hand by ishiplouis / @pocketsunshineharry
(E, 22k, enemies to lovers) Does the attraction between two complete opposites really exist, or is it just a myth?
🩷 It Will Always Be You by @phdmama
(E, 15k, older Larry) If you had told Louis Tomlinson a year ago that he would be celebrating his birthday by kissing the man who is the love of his life on a Church Street park bench in Burlington VT as the snow drifted softly down, he would have told you that you were extremely imaginative.
🩷 You Light Up the Path by QuickedWeen / @becomeawendybird
(T, 12k, mermaid au) Louis Tomlinson left his home in Doncaster as a young man with the intent of making enough money to send it back home to his family and support them however he could. Harry, or so he likes to be called, is the myth and legend himself known as the Staithes Mermaid.
🩷 The Revelation by @creamcoffeelou
(E, 8k, cult au) Harry feels his edges start to unravel. He can’t find where he ends and where Louis begins. Part 3 of The Risen
🩷 Lacy Little Secret by hazzahtomlinson / @itsnotreal
(E, 6k, bachelor party) Harry learned a very valuable lesson that day: always check to make sure it’s the right car before getting in.
🩷 the embers are new by @nouies
(NR, 3k, fantasy) Louis is a dragon vet whose life is changed after a long trip.
🩷 DIY Orgasm by red_PANdaaa28 / @red-pandaaa
(E, 3k, Grindr) Harry takes artsy nudes, Louis receives one and they both get to come.
🩷 Next in Line by @jaerie
(E, 3k, a/b/o) It wasn’t fair that nobody was doing anything about such behaviour. Harry couldn’t ban all alphas from his shows, but he could make omega only sections.
🩷 Just a little taste by @lunarheslwt
(G, 3k, vampire au) Harry is a vampire that comes home one night, grappling with the darkness that comes with being one.
🩷 The Early Show by LadyLondonderry / @londonfoginacup
(G, 2k, uni radio show) The thing about Harry is that Louis has never been sure if he doesn’t like hybrids, or if he doesn’t like Louis. Either way, it’s unfortunate that they apparently are both equally late.
🩷 Ahead in the Count by @kingsofeverything
(E, 2k, baseball au) Louis’s been a catcher in the minor leagues for more than a decade and he’s never known a pitcher to touch his junk more often than he touches the baseball.
🩷 I Hear the Wind, It's Whispering My Name by Anonymous
(M, 2k, ghost fic) She’d also allowed herself to think of the woman every time she had a bit of me time over the next week. But then the woman had returned.
🩷 Imagination into Reality by @tommokat
(E, 1k, girl direction) It’s more than just physical, it’s years and years of attraction and pining and something that tastes like love.
🩷 All This Time by @allwaswell16
(T, 1k, flower shop au) Louis Tomlinson had been best friends with flower shop owner Gemma Styles for years. It wasn't until she suggested he date her alpha brother that he ever thought of Harry that way. Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea...
—Rare Pairs—
🩷 Pageant Material by LadyAJ_13 / @ladyaj-13
(G, 6k, Zayn/Louis) the Zouis teen beauty pageant AU.
🩷 Cool Kids Never Have The Time by wordsnnotes / @quelsentiment
(T, 6k, Zayn/Louis) Zayn auditions to join a band and makes a bad first impression on their bassist.
🩷 you wanna be on top? by @disgruntledkittenface
(NR, 6k, Zayn/Louis) Zayn’s experience as a contestant on America’s Next Top Model left her more than a little traumatized. She thinks she knows what to expect when she lets herself be talked into making an appearance on the show a couple of years later. Louis manages to surprise her.

I love your VT au so much! Misako is one of my favourite characters so whenever someone gives her an actually good back story it makes my heart mushy /pos
I have a few like random ideas/thoughts, feel free to ignore them though:
does darkley's exist in this universe? and since it later became Wu's academy, would it become Garmadon's academy?
does everyone in ninjago find out Wu was bad this whole time and realise Garmadon is a good guy and like support him or is everyone terrified of him or something?
does lloyd like the ninja? considering they're like celebrities in this would he think they're super cool or would he think they're bad, either disliking them because he has different interests or would he be told they're working for someone bad?
does Lloyd still like comic books? also, does he introduce the gang to his favourite comics and stuff? I can just imagine a RGB sibling interaction like this:
L: so, I realise you two had literally no childhood. So I, your amazing younger brother, have come bearing gifts
K: no offence but we're a bit too old for kid stuff
N: Yeah, we've been ninja basically our whole lives. we don't really need this stuff. Thanks though
L: *reveals a pile of comic books, old kid show DVDs, action figures and plushies*
Kai and Nya proceed to spend the next week reading all the comics, watching all the shows and playing with the toys. Lloyd takes over their chores while they both heal their inner child
okay thats all! I love this AU, and all your posts are super cool! have a good day 🫶
Thank you!!! I'm glad you like it so much!!
As for your questions:
Darkleys I think will still exist, but instead of being a school where kids are taught to be evil, I think I'm gonna make it a boarding school for Ninjago's royalty/upper class. So a different type of evil school. Misako and Clouse both went when they were younger.
After his plans with the Great Devourer go awry, his Nindroid army is shut down, and the Emperor himself calls for an audience with Wu to yell at him for not catching Garmadon yet, Wu kinda snaps. He forges the Mega Weapon after holding off for a few weeks after finally getting all four Golden Weapons, and uses it to usurp the throne and take complete control of the city.
So by the time Wu is defeated, everyone knows that he was the true bad guy. And the cities thoughts on Garmadon after everything is said and done are very mixed.
Overall most of the city regard him as a hero, since he not only killed the GD with his bare hands but also evaporated an arm and almost died to use the Mega Weapon to stop Wu.
But there's a fair amount of superstition regarding Oni in Ninjago, most of it negative.
So there's also a fair amount of people who feel he should be monitored at the very least, locked up or even executed to ensure he can't do to the city what he did to the Great Devourer if he gets annoyed.
And there's a small-ish group who believe that he's the Green Ninja, and that him defeating Wu was the Prophecy being fulfilled. They are kind of a semi-rabid fan club for him.
At first Lloyd thinks the Ninja are awesome. He and Harumi (they're childhood friends and next door neighbors before the Great Devourer attack) liked to play games where they were the Ninja, and were even planning on dressing up as the Green Ninja (Harumi) and Lord Garmadon (Lloyd) for Day of the Departed.
Then the Great Devourer attacks New Ninjago City.
And Lloyd's Dad, who he thought was dead his whole life, comes back.
And he's stinking Lord Garmadon.
And soon the Ninja, the cool, real-life superheroes he and his best friend would pretend to be, are hunting him down, their minds magically manipulated by their teacher, Lloyd's own Uncle.
Right after Wu's defeat, Lloyd is still pretty spooked by the Ninja, but after a few months where everyone is recovering and then all the Tournament stuff, Lloyd warms up to the Ninja and they start to grow fond of him as well.
Lloyd still loves comic books, and is appalled when he finds out that Kai wasn't allowed to play any video games or read any comics or do anything actually fun, and he's borderline distressed when he first meets Nya and she had never heard of Starfarer in her life.
He sort of takes it upon himself as the one with the most normal childhood to be the 'authority' on how to be a normal kid and do normal kid things like MarioKart, eating junk food, pranking people, teenage rebellion (sure he's like 11, but he's watched a lot of teens on tv, and that counts, right?), and shapeshifting.
Lloyd actually did have the most normal childhood out of literally every member of the main cast up until the plot happens. It wasn't super normal, but it's still more normal than what anyone, teen or adult, went through.

1D Day, Hour Three
Almost halfway through this hour, which is almost halfway through this day, is the point where Louis Tomlinson stops having fucks left to give and starts getting real. He’s still a professional throughout hour three (not like Harry in hour two, oof), but god, how??? Everything here is a disaster, and it’s infuriating when you consider that a) this must have been somewhat planned out (the band is HUGE, allegedly 32 million people are watching), and b) it’s being produced in LA, presumably with easy access to professionals who have had some experience with live shows (since, what, the 1930s???). Anyway, I would have loved to hear the choice words Louis no doubt had for Ben Winston when he ran away during one of the Google+ Hangouts, lmao.
When I first watched this two years back, Niall’s nervous laughter nearly drove me insane, but this time around, I’m loving the subtle nuances w/r/t wtf is happening on this here day as Louis’s rage starts to climb and Niall’s Slytherin core starts to emerge. Deets under the cut.
Niall and Louis literally burst through a paper wall to launch hour three and reveal Niall’s lilac hair (also revealed: the fact that Niall’s “a diva,” according to Louis). The color’s hardly even noticeable, but Niall’s all worked up about it, and I’m betting he had to do this because he has no tattoos, so everyone wanted to freak his Virgo ass out with something “permanent.”
The first bit is so tiresome (Louis’s childhood friend, Stan, forcing the Milkshake City staff to perform the world’s sleepiest version of “Rock Me”), but I’m a huge fan of Stan’s for the Larry purple dildo video alone (ICONIC; ping me if you need a link), plus I love the tidbit about the time Harry came in for a milkshake for himself and “a friend back at home.”
After we survive this long-ass bit of fill, Louis and Stan take the piss out of each other and banter a bit with Niall, which is all pretty hilarious and also makes me sad in the key of “oh how I wish that was me.”
Because it wasn’t at all tedious in hour one, it’s time for another Guinness Book of World Records challenge (Louis: “Of course it is”), this time balancing coins on faces. Hey, speaking of faces, did you know that men are at peak hotness between the ages of 32 and 36? This guy is 22 years old, doing the stupidest task ever, help me, Jeebus:
Next up is the randomizer, which randomly pulls celebrity videos, and this is when the in-ears start acting up for Louis, who’s midway through Robbie Williams asking them for the best live performer they’ve ever seen, prompting Louis to give Ben the evil eye off camera and go off script to say Michael Buble, ha.
Some random sports man (update: Doncaster Rovers manager) demands that they do pressups up and burpees, and Louis gives us a surprisingly strong and steady nine pressups before proving why he’s most relatable:
After fits of unnecessary laughter from Niall, and a lot of exasperation about the technical problems so far from Louis (friend, you’ve seen nowt yet), we get the best VT from this entire day, the iconic bts video for “Talk Dirty to Me,” and if you watch nothing from any of this, please tell me you’ve seen it in full for Zayn the goofball! Liam’s hanky code shoutouts! Harry’s hip chub! Louis and his glorious torso! Niall in full Farmer Ted mode!
Next up, we get astronauts congratulating the D from space, and whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. I mean, honestly, WHY? Are these astronauts fans? Is anyone besides Niall into space? I know there’s an intense interest in making space interesting for teens (how many times have people on the international space station beamed their way into MTV award shows at this point), but whyyyyy.
Scott tells us we’ll soon see Doctor Who (mild interest from Nouis) and Simon Cowell (Louis: “SIMON COWELL, WOO HOO, I LOVE THAT GUY!” Niall: “Simon GROWL”), but first up is Doctor Who, and this is where the wheels fall off the bus, technically speaking. First, there’s a 15-minute delay (!!), so Nouis are standing around while the Doctor handles some other interview for the BBC. Eventually, they connect, and Louis makes the understatement of the year (“This is gonna be tough”) as both the video and audio go full Inception and echo in and around each other to make us all woozy:
Louis again understates the chaos happening on screen by saying, “I think actually that this is not working,” and then begging for any VT, they don’t care, help (the VT is Niall being all humblecholy about their success and Ireland and something something, I’m not actually interested, sorry).
We come back to Louis still losing it, curious as to how they can have a link to space but can’t have a studio in LA link to the BBC, and yeah. YEAH. But enough about that, it’s Google+ Hangout (lololololol) time, and we don’t get too many answers to these vital fan questions because Ben is in Louis’s ear so much that Louis starts arguing with him about it and eventually runs off stage to yell at him in person, and god, it’s glorious. READY 2 FIGHT:
Because this is an utter trainwreck, the team decides to do another live link again, this time to the X Factor while it’s airing in the UK, and it’s…yeah, not good. Just awful, cameras out of synch, no sound, etc. Save us, random VT of Denmark!!
Hearing Louis say “tits up” is my new religion, but honestly, this chitchat with McFly is such a revelation. Apparently, they worked with Niall on something, so they gossip with Louis about what a diva Niall is (!) and how he brought a friend of his named Shawn around (!!), and there’s a lot of inside jokes I know nothing about, but I’m LIVING for Niall looking at all these boys on the screen and saying, “I feel like I’m alone in my bedroom,” and Louis’s response, “Okay, Niall!”
“Don’t Forget Where You Belong” is announced, but we don’t get to hear it (although we DO get to see some sweet Nouis dancing), and two more girls go into the call box of doom. Because this show’s producers can’t go ten minutes without a disaster, there’s increasingly urgent screaming from Louis to Ben to just roll the Zayn graffiti VT, which takes at least a full, tense minute to post.
Zayn is incredibly hot, but my heart breaks for him saying it’s their 127th show, and he’s feeling inspired and creative to make art, and I just wonder how??? How are you not banging your head against a wall instead of painting it? Anyway, it’s a lot of spraypainting/artist au Zayn come to life, with Liam working out shirtless nearby and heaping praise on just about every single thing Zayn puts on the wall (awwwww). Also some nice Flicker reference points (Niall: “Zayn, will you draw a picture of me?” Zayn: “No. I don’t like you”). Ouch.
We come back to Rebecca, an opera singer who’s here to sing some tweets, and this is a horrible idea that Ben Winston stole from Jimmy Kimmel, right? When he used to have Josh Groban sing tweets a million years ago? Anyway, this ripoff doesn’t work because nobody can really understand the words, but credit to Louis for trying to cheat and speed this whole thing up:
When Rebecca finishes, Louis says he got emotional (Niall just laughs), and this poor girl says not to worry, she’ll do more later, and lmao at Louis: “Oh, OH, there’s more in store, Niall” (Niall: “Can’t wait”), sighhhhh, it’s torture for us all, tbh. Anyway, time for some Belgian VT and reinforcement that Louis’s part Belgian, which is why it’s super relevant, I guess.
The last bit is back to Dynamo, to redo the magic bit that failed with Harry in hour two. I’m still curious about this trick because there’s a piece of paper locked in this box (Harry’s dick holds the key to it), and tl/dr, Harry says April for the month an hour ago, but Louis says November, and sure enough, November plus all the other details are in this locked box. HMMMMM. Me as Harry’s finger delivering the key immediately in this segment, meaning he’s literally right there watching all of it. Pick someone supportive, etc.
Anyway, back to the trick, there’s a bit where Louis says he told Dynamo all this information earlier (Niall starts chewing his nails a bit ferociously at that), but then he backpedals brilliantly later about what an amazing, stunning trick, etc., and this group of sneaky liars, god, I love ‘em!
We get more terrible highlights, which sucks, because I kind of liked the way Louis was asking Niall what HIS highlights were, but never mind, let’s get Ben’s. I’ll leave you with this picture that makes me think of Louis hosting Family Feud, you know, the final round, when you have to see how your answers stacked up with a family member’s and if, together, you cleared 200 (“Name someone a person may confess a crime to”):

Welcome to day 3 of 31 Days of Heterotopias: Motels and Hotels, a month of posts about how motels, hotels, and inns function as heterotopias and liminal spaces in society. (More about heterotopias and liminal spaces.) Each post will look at these ideas from its own vantage point, which may not obviously connect with the others, and which may mention motels and hotels only peripherally or may focus on them without referencing heterotopia or liminality. I won’t attempt to tie the posts together. They’ll all be listed here, as they are posted.
___________________________________________________
There are six motels/hotels that we (spouse and I) stay at over and over, in Savannah, Boston, Middlebury VT, Orleans MA, Boothbay ME, and Ogunquit ME. I’m not sure exactly what their appeal is. Prices per night range from $89 to $250, all fairly mid-range for their locations. The locations themselves are great but they differ — two are in the heart of cities, two are in the heart of towns — all four very walkable to the things we want to walk to — and the other two are on the outskirts of town, though still walkable into town (a mile or two each way, which we enjoy), and one of those is a few blocks from the ocean. Three accept pets, which mattered to us until a few years ago.
I’m going to highlight one of these hotels today, The Holiday Inn Express-Historic District, Savannah, GA. We’ve stayed here at least four times and would have stayed more but they were booked twice when we travelled and we had to stay at other hotels, including the Cotton Sail, which sits just above River Street, chic, modern, expensive, and the Planters Inn, on Reynolds Square, which is old-fashioned, falling apart (when we were there, the elevators didn’t work, almost the whole time!), and the staff was unfindable and not helpful. There was a complimentary bottle of wine in the room for my birthday, which was a lovely surprise, but things went downhill from there, and at more than $300 per night, things needed to be pretty perfect.
But I love the HIX. Yes, it’s a Holiday Inn — which, when I was growing up in the 70s, was “the nation’s innkeeper” and its iconic sign was everywhere (my family stayed in family-friendly Holiday Inns and Howard Johnsons on our once-a-year vacation) —
(above, not my photo)
— but this one is on the corner of E. Bay and Abercorn, one block from River Street, a few blocks from the City Market, a block from Reynolds Square. The location can’t be beat. (Shown below with red tag. You can also see the Cotton Sail Hotel and the Planters Inn on the map.)
We come into town on the train,
take a cab to the hotel, and we don’t rent a car (from the airport, miles away) until we check out and leave for Jekyll Island, an hour and a half away — often via the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens:
*
Somehow the HIX feels like a sanctuary from the moment I enter the wide, whooshing automatic sliding doors, usually for the first time each visit at 6:30 a.m., more than 24 hours after having fallen out of bed in New Hampshire at 4 a.m. to catch the 5:50 a.m. bus to Boston, then the 9:30 a.m. train from there, through a change to a different train line in New York’s Penn Station in the afternoon, with evening and overnight on the Silver Meteor (which continues on to Miami), to be awakened early again, at 5 a.m., for disembarking.
And just about always, our room is ready when we stumble in, bleary eyed, at 6:30, both needing showers and some sleep on a real bed before hitting Huey’s on the River for beignets, cafe au lait, and grits:
Nothing says “welcome” like the availability of the hotel room in the wee and exhausting hours of the morning, and check in staff who seem happy to provide it more than 8 hours before their normal check-in- time. (They also give us bottles of water and sometimes fruit.)
Chilling out on the bed in your hotel room watching television, while wearing your own pajamas, is sometimes the best part of a vacation. — Laura Marano
*
We’re usually at this hotel at Christmas and New Year’s, when it’s decorated cheerfully and simply.
There is something especially wonderful, for me, about spending big, culturally significant holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving away from home, and it is precisely because of the heterotropic feel of it: I like the way time passes differently when travelling, when staying in a city or town where I don’t know anyone except the person I am travelling with (and if I’m travelling alone, even more so). Time is open, the future is unknown rather than proscribed as it often is when surrounded by family or friends, when in one’s usual place, taking part in the same interactions as always on these occasions.
We often spend a day or two before Christmas in Savannah, then drive to Jekyll on Christmas Eve or Christmas itself, and we return to Savannah on New Year’s Eve or the day before, spend that night there, and take the train home on 1 January. I love subverting the procession of what is often treated as “sacred” time by making it feel ordinary (ordinarily holy) through the mundane activities of packing, picking up a rental car, driving on the interstate, unpacking, finding take-out Chinese food someplace or just nibbling on snack food when most others in our culture are buying, wrapping, feasting, gathering in groups. I like interacting with cab drivers, rental car agents, restaurant staff, hotel staff on these set-aside days; I feel I am part of an underground community in some way, and at the same time I know I’m not. Our schedule and plans for Christmas Eve and Day and the days before involve not decorating a tree, not wrapping and unwrapping gifts, not making holiday foods, not meeting family/friends for a meal, not going to church, and so on, but rather just checking out of a hotel and picking up a rental car on time. Then? Nothing is certain; time could unfold any way it will.
We exchange only one or two small gifts during this period and I make some rough decoration for the room from shells, branches, sand, rocks, ribbons and rope, a few shiny things. If we were at home, I’m not sure we’d scale down to this extent, but even if we did, I don’t think it would feel the same to me, because there is something about the usual place, home, that exerts a kind of sway on time, on plans, on what’s expected to happen when, and it really does seem like it’s the place itself that has this effect.
Michel Foucault says (slight paraphrase) that “the heterotopia begins to function fully when people are in a kind of absolute break with their traditional time.” To make “an absolute break with traditional time” — by travelling away from home, by staying in a hotel or motel that superimposes and confuses public and private space, that functions as a temporary and transitional way-station, that allows personal (and perhaps “couple” or “family”) identity to float free of its boundaries in an anonymous environment — removes or rescues us from prevailing norms, allows time and self to dissolve and re-order to some extent, blurring the boundaries of time and self as the boundaries of meaning in the space itself are blurred (public/private, familiar/strange, feels institutional/feels like a retreat, etc.). And what period of time is more traditional in American culture than Christmas and the weeks before it? (Rivaling Christmas for traditional celebration, Thanksgiving is the other time we tend to travel each year.)
Some years, we do feast on Christmas Day at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel buffet extravaganza, and New Year’s Eve is often a special dinner in Savannah. We may attend the Christmas concert at St. John the Baptist in Savannah, or take a nighttime walking tour with a sort of Christmasy Dickensian theme (a fund raiser for the local food bank or other charity in Savannah). Even those time-appropriate, traditional “Christmas” events, however, take on a different feel, because we are in the space of a heterotopia, where multiple realities are juxtaposed. We’re in a place that’s both familiar (we have been to Savannah and Jekyll before, we have certainly stayed in Holiday Inns before) and unfamiliar, even exotic, a place where the weather is mild enough that we can dine outside at a cafe table on the sidewalk in mid-winter, when there are feet of snow piling up on our driveway at home. We are among palm trees and camellias blooming everywhere. We are wearing light clothing. We are among other tourists, also enchanted and bewitched by their surroundings and how they feel in these strange surroundings, unmoored from the usual family, community, daily household tasks. It often feels surreal, disorienting in a mostly good way.
Instead of spending Christmas morning unwrapping gifts, we light a candle or two, open a card and a gift or two, and then take a long walk on the quiet beach, admire the shore birds, maybe walk in the woods and look for stinkhorn fungi. On New Year’s Eve in Savannah, we often eat dinner fairly early, walk about on the Savannah streets a bit as festivities are starting to gear up, then head back to the waiting hotel room, where we can perhaps hear a car horn, fireworks, carousers from inside the small impersonal space.
*
Back to the hotel: The room itself is simple, like the lobby, with just what’s needed: good wifi, a refrigerator, a microwave, a desk and chairs, comfortable bed(s), well-functioning bathroom, some space, some quiet.
The staff are always attentive, and the place just works well. I don’t feel in any sense that I am home there, but I feel benignly looked after without feeling watched or intruded upon. I can be anonymous, I am unknown (even after four or more visits), but I also feel the tenuous and privileged connection that being a “guest” confers.
*
While in Savannah, favourite spots besides the hotel and Hueys are the Paris Market, with their unusual toys and stuffed animals, good-smelling things, jewelry, books, household goods, fantastic displays, and the macarons, especially at an outside cafe table …
… the fabulous Arches Bar in the Olde Pink House …
(Our Little Hummingbird cocktail)
And the tavern there for dinner, by the fire …
… and then there is the estimable Gryphon Tea Room, serving tea sandwiches and brunch, staffed by the Savannah College of Art & Design students …
the ceiling
Oh, and Savannah Bee honey, with two (maybe more?) locations in Savannah (and one on St. Simon’s Island) … Free samples of honey there, plus mead tastings, lots of lotions and potions …
… and the River Street Sweets and Candy Kitchens on River Street and at City Market (all with free praline samples) …
Other favourite food places are Jazz’d Tapas Bar for tapas and romantic atmosphere; Moon River Brew Pub for casual eats (big outdoor space); Churchill’s Pub in the wine cellar for special occasions; Rocks on the River and Rocks on the Roof at the Bohemian Hotel for a fun, hip nosh (Rocks on the River was open one Christmas morning when nothing else was, bless them); Vic’s on the River for great view and a comfy traditional spot. Once we get the car, we usually head to the Crab Shack on Tybee Island for seafood and cocktails. I’d love to get to the Crystal Beer Parlor next time; we walked there last time but they were unexpectedly closed that day.
*
Then there’s hours spent strolling on cobblestone streets, along tree-lined streets dripping with Spanish moss, beautiful and interesting architecture everywhere …
… and the parks, gardens, squares, Colonial Cemetery …
… the stairs that are so fun to climb …
… the whimsical creche and the glorious Christmas concerts, with organ and choir, at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist …
I almost forgot the Telfair museums — which includes the Telfair Academy, part period house, part art gallery …
… the Jepson Center (a more modern art gallery) …
… and a tour of the Owens-Thomas House (no inside photos allowed) …
*
And after walking, eating, drinking (cocktails on the street!), attending events and taking tours, enjoying tea, (mostly) window shopping, sampling gobs of pralines and honey, pounding the cobblestone and climbing up and down the stairs, it’s so nice to retreat to the unpretentious Holiday Inn Express at the corner of E. Bay and Abercorn for a little quiet, some privacy, a few Zots candies, and some moments or hours of down time in an uncluttered, embracing room, possibly overlooking a pocket garden behind the hotel.
Even after a long train ride and early morning wake-ups, no shower, gritty eyes, I always perk up a bit when I see this ….
When you get into a hotel room, you lock the door, and you know there is a secrecy, there is a luxury, there is fantasy. There is comfort. There is reassurance. — Diane von Furstenberg

Predicting the winner of every Week 5 college football game, from Clemson-VT to FIU-Charlotte
Lots of underdogs are projected to cover this week. Lots of games might be closer than you think. Fingers crossed.
Below are picks and projections using the S&P+ projections you can find in full in the Football Study Hall stat profiles. See the bottom of the post for more detail about these.
The spread (listed in parentheses) is shown next to S&P+’s pick for each game. When S&P+ predicts a push (a tie with Vegas, basically), I’m listing the pick on the side that S&P+ would’ve picked, if teams could score in decimals.
This document breaks games (and S&P+’s season performance to date) out into their decimal glory. My ratings have gone at least 61 percent against the spread in three of the year’s first four ranks. That, my friends, is what we call a hot streak. Will it continue?
Ranked vs. ranked
James Snook-USA TODAY Sports
Luke Falk and Wazzu host USC on Friday night.
No. 2 Clemson 27, No. 12 Virginia Tech (+7.5) 21 (Saturday, 8:00 PM ET, ABC)
No. 5 USC 32, No. 16 Washington State (+3.5) 29 (Friday, 10:30 PM ET, ESPN)
No. 13 Auburn 30, No. 24 Mississippi State (+8.5) 21* (Saturday, 6:00 PM ET, ESPN)
Last week was a little bit disappointing in that, despite odds to the contrary (and a close call in Iowa City), chalk mostly ruled. We didn’t get the “unranked home team takes down a top-10 team” upset we thought was possible.
This week, we’re looking at similar circumstances. Two top-five teams (Clemson, USC) hit the road as favorites against exciting, lower-rated squads. Plus No. 7 Georgia hits the road to play Tennessee. Odds of both Clemson and USC winning: only 36 percent. Odds of Clemson, USC, and Georgia all winning: 22 percent. Maybe we’ll get our upset after all.
* The official projection: AU 30.0, MSU 21.5, with MSU projected to cover by a hundredth of a point.
Other ranked teams in action
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports
Nic Shimonek could be celebrating a top-15 upset on Saturday night.
No. 1 Alabama 39, Ole Miss (+28) 18 (Saturday, 9:00 PM ET, ESPN)
No. 4 Penn State (-18) 37, Indiana 19 (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, BTN)
No. 6 Washington 42, Oregon State (+26.5) 19 (Saturday, 8:00 PM ET, Pac-12)
No. 7 Georgia 30, Tennessee (+7.5) 24 (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, CBS)
No. 10 Wisconsin 35, Northwestern (+15.5) 17 (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET, ABC)
No. 11 Ohio State 38, Rutgers (+30.5) 12 (Saturday, 7:30 PM ET, BTN)
No. 14 Miami (-6.5) 34, Duke 24 (Friday, 7:00 PM ET, ESPN)
No. 15 Oklahoma State (-10) 43, Texas Tech 32 (Saturday, 8:00 PM ET, Fox)*
No. 18 South Florida 43, East Carolina (+23.5) 20 (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET, CBSSN)
No. 19 San Diego State 31, Northern Illinois (+11) 24 (Saturday, 10:30 PM ET, CBSSN)
No. 21 Florida (-9.5) 29, Vanderbilt 17 (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET, ESPN)
No. 22 Notre Dame 36, Miami (Ohio) (+21) 17 (Saturday, 5:00 PM ET, NBCSN)
No. 25 LSU 36, Troy (+20.5) 16 (Saturday, 7:00 PM ET, ESPNU)
Vegas sees another Bama rout coming. S&P+ hasn’t completely given up on Ole Miss just yet.
The two most interesting games on this list, by the way: Miami-Duke and OSU-Texas Tech. S&P+ loves the Hurricanes and has been slow to accept that Duke might be awesome. But Duke might be awesome. And there are few things more daunting than following up on a disappointing loss to TCU by going to Lubbock for a night track meet. We’ll see how focused Mike Gundy’s Pokes are.
* Technically OSU 42.5, TTU 31.9.
Power 5 vs. Power 5
Texas 35, Iowa State (+5) 30 (Thursday, 8:00 PM ET, ESPN)
Nebraska (-6.5) 30, Illinois 21 (Friday, 8:00 PM ET, FS1)
Minnesota 29, Maryland (+12) 22 (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET, FS1)
Georgia Tech 34, North Carolina (+9.5) 27 (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET, ESPN2)
NC State 33, Syracuse (+12) 26 (Saturday, 12:20 PM ET, ACCN)
Kansas State 35, Baylor (+16.5) 27 (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, ESPN2)
Florida State (-7.5) 32, Wake Forest 19 (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, ABC)
Stanford (-16) 42, Arizona State 24 (Saturday, 4:00 PM ET, Pac-12)
Michigan State (-3) 27, Iowa 23 (Saturday, 4:00 PM ET, Fox)
Texas A&M 33, South Carolina (+9) 25 (Saturday, 7:30 PM ET, SECN)
Oregon 39, California (+13.5) 27 (Saturday, 10:30 PM ET, FS1)
UCLA 33, Colorado (+7) 30 (Saturday, 10:30 PM ET, ESPN2)
This is a weird schedule, in that a lot of the week’s most interesting games will have taken place before Saturday morning. On Friday night, we’ve got Miami-Duke and USC-Wazzu, but on Thursday, we’ve got Ames in all its glory: Matt Campbell’s exciting Iowa State takes on a Texas team that plays a lot better as an underdog than a favorite.
FBS vs. FBS
Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports
Tanner Mangum and BYU have struggled to ... well, do pretty much anything.
Utah State (+2.5) 28, BYU 21 (Friday, 8:00 PM ET, CBSSN)
Houston 31, Temple (+13.5) 19 (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET, ESPNU)
Arkansas 39, New Mexico State (+17) 23 (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET, SECN)
Pittsburgh 39, Rice (+20) 21 (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET, ACCN)
Boston College 28, Central Michigan (+7.5) 24 (Saturday, 1:00 PM ET, ACCN)
Buffalo 29, Kent State (+7.5) 23 (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, ESPN3)
Ohio 29, Massachusetts (+8.5) 25 (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, NESN)
Army 37, UTEP (+24.5) 23 (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, CBSSN)
Navy 36, Tulsa (+7.5) 33 (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, ESPNU)
SMU (-17) 40, Connecticut 21 (Saturday, 4:00 PM ET, ESPNN)
Kentucky 33, Eastern Michigan (+14.5) 24 (Saturday, 4:00 PM ET, SECN)
Wyoming (-16.5) 34, Texas State 17 (Saturday, 4:00 PM ET, Facebook)
Bowling Green (-3) 32, Akron 29 (Saturday, 6:00 PM ET, ESPN3)
Western Michigan 32, Ball State (+14.5) 27 (Saturday, 7:00 PM ET, ESPN3)

Cincinnati (-4.5) 29, Marshall 23 (Saturday, 7:00 PM ET, ESPN3)
Central Florida 32, Memphis (+4) 30 (Saturday, 7:00 PM ET, ESPN2)
Florida Atlantic (-3) 34, Middle Tennessee 29 (Saturday, 7:00 PM ET, Stadium)
Florida International (-12.5) 35, Charlotte 22 (Saturday, 7:00 PM ET, beIN)
Southern Miss 33, North Texas (+9) 25 (Saturday, 7:00 PM ET, $CUSATV)

Colorado State (-7) 39, Hawaii 28 (Saturday, 11:59 PM ET, MWC Video)
Yeah, S&P+ has given up on BYU.
Each year at Football Study Hall, I have posted weekly S&P+ picks as a way of affirming the ratings’ validity. I use my S&P+ system as a complement to most of my analysis, and the picks are a way of showing it generally knows what it’s talking about.
S&P+ tends to hit between 50 (meh) and 54 percent (great) against the spread from year to year. It isn’t always the single best performer, but it holds its own. And beyond picks, it goes deeper than any other set of college football analytics on the market. You can go into granular detail regarding team strengths and weaknesses in a way that no other set of ratings allows. (See the annual team statistical profiles as proof.)
This year, I will be posting the weekly S&P+ picks at SB Nation instead of FSH.
Because I like to experiment, however, I won’t just be posting the official S&P+ picks. Go to this Google doc, and you will find three sets of picks: S&P+, F/+ (combined ratings from S&P+ and Brian Fremeau’s FEI), and what I’m calling an adjusted S&P+ pick, in which I attempt to account for two additional factors: week of play and type of game.
Week of play: I’m finding that there are cycles to scoring averages throughout a given season. Week 1 typically falls below the season scoring average, while the final weeks of the season tend to perk up in the scoring department. This adjusted projection will take this into account.
Game type: It shouldn’t be surprising to learn that the standard deviation of possible results in a game against FCS competition, for instance, is different than that of a conference game. This projection will also adjust for different types of games. This will mean some pretty extreme projections (Arkansas by 63 over FAMU, for example), but we’ll see how it performs.

Ashamed to admit that just now when Cannibal by Kesha came on my brain immediately created a celebrity au where Jimmy is a controversial music artist and a string of high profile celebrity murders been happening lately….
Oh no wait, now I’m thinking of an entire au with other chars too—
Ghost is also a musical artist, being the lead singer in a band with Spooker, Colon, and Katrina (it used to be Ghost, Toast, and Katrina but a big fallout happened before any of them rose to fame that led to Toast leaving back to England and eventually becoming a model). I imagine Katrina as bassist, Spooker on drums, and Colon on guitar. Ghost used to be drummer, and Toast guitarist and lead vocalist, but Ghost took over vocals after his departure and Colon took over for Toast, with Spooker being a very last minute addition by chance when they heard how good he was and Katrina convinced Ghost having someone else on drums would leave him more time to focus on vocals and writing. Also, I feel like all of them would sing but Ghost is the one who sings most of the songs (also he can scream crazy good and I stand by that (also it’s hot af lmao)). Colon probably had mild experience in singing but has improved a lot since then, and Spooker had NO natural or learned singing skills going into the band and is still not quite up to par with his bandmates, but he’s improved /so/ much.
Toast would probably do modeling cuz, duh. But also he writes books and a lot of people won’t give them a chance because they think he’s just a pretty face but he’s actually a talented writer of supernatural mysteries. Also, more recently he got into acting and blew up on the big screen and prefers the acting gigs because he feels like he gets to showcase more of his skills and get more appreciation for them than he got in modeling.
Gavin probably is a stunt double for Toast. Besides that, I see him probably being Jimmy’s dealer (Jimmy does copious amounts of drugs he is never not on cocaine idk what to tell u /hj). He prefers to keep out of the actual spotlight of celebrity lifestyle, and instead reap his own benefits from it in the background.
Mary. Hmmm….. I feel like she needs something that’s not like, typical spotlight celebrity. I remember a certain someone (wink wink) talking about ballerina Mary… I think that’s actually perfect. She’s a skilled and renowned ballerina, but also, I think she figure skates. And does some modeling on the side—maybe how she met Toast? I’ll have to think more on it.
