aita for wanting a 200$ refund on a 400$ model that was REALLY below par in both quality and customer service?
This was one of my first monetary experiences with my own credit card and account, to preface.
So, I'm learning SFM and have regular dates with my boyfriend in vrchat. Between the two of us we knew enough to make models of myself in both, but not enough to make one for my headmate that me and her would both be satisfied with.
TL;DR, the first modeler we went to cancelled after we proved too impatient for them and they didn't need the comm money, so we put out a post calling for 3d models and asked our moots to spread it on here and on Twitter.
Eventually, we found a few artists that were within our post-high-school graveyard shift budget, but then an artist appeared in our asks that was interested in our order. Now, from the very BEGINNING they were blaring Sus alarms in our head with how they typed, their profile, their portfolio, the whole thing, but we still talked with them about it and eventually got to dming on discord over it.
We agreed on 350 with a down payment for the model, and she went to work. Somewhere along the line it increased to 400 with a down payment but I don't remember the circumstances for why.
I was a little impatient at times, but she still did good work, even if she misinterpreted our suggestions sometimes and was high at least once when we asked for an update.
We'd assumed that she would rig it for SFM and VRC as a part of the main payment. She then told us it would cost extra for the rigging.
We were understandably miffed but she justified it with money problems, so we sighed and went with it. When it was finished, she sent us a ZIP file holding all of it, and...then we didn't have any idea how to get it working.
She helped us, thankfully, but the whole thing was really annoying for our computer illiterate phone-dwelling ass. And then we had no clue about unity because it had been years since we'd made the other model with a base. Then she joked about having a $140 fee for it and that was pretty much the final straw for us, deciding to just pay someone else to port it for us because we were getting genuine headaches from it.
Since then, we've been using the model as planned, but have noticed a lot of clipping issues with it, it turns out the person we found to port it actually does similar quality models from scratch for like a FRACTION of the price, and despite us telling her it was going to be used on Oculus(i refuse to call it Meta) Quest, it was INCREDIBLY unoptimized for it.
This is a first world problem to hell and back and I'm not actually going to do it because I don't want to deal with her again after all the miscommunication but
Aita for being suspicious enough I've been scammed/fed a sob story to want at least a partial refund here?
What are these acronyms?

(just copy pasting the description on the video ^o^) Animation made for Jael Peñaloza !
This project was started as a "2 week" project the day of the original UV being cancelled announcement though as with most things I went a little overboard. Oops hehe. But I'm glad I did.
There of course has since been an update on the situation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC9Ob7pHUlA ); but never the less I was still determined to finish, especially when a lot of what was said in the update video was also brought up in the animation!
Thanks for being a wonderful inspiration Jakei! Whatever you do choose to do next, I'll be here to support it! Just take care of yourself and keep doing what you enjoy.
Everything in this was hand animated in blender, no mo-cap or phys engines, and since there are so many wips of everything from start to end, I'll probably be posting them here and there and right up a mini thing about it all on my site eventually! :D (like the time-lapse of 3 hours of animating hair physics condensed down into 2 mins o-o )
After 2 months straight of animation I'm happy it's finally done ^o^ Sorry it took so long to come out (to those that knew in the spaces I hangout in), especially since I paused all my other projects to put this on top priority! I'll be getting back to avi making soon after a er… A well needed break o-0 May be streaming a bit the next couple days when I do!
Thanks so much for reading this though (if you are reading this now hehe) and watching! Check out all the talented people below and their own work!! ♥ ----------------------------------------------------------

Reposting clips such as edits or gifs is completely fine! Just please:
Do not claim this as your own.
Do not remove my watermark.
Do not reupload (Reposting the entire thing with no changes) ((THIS INCLUDES OTHER PLATFORMS! I made a tick tock JUST to post this so there is no excuse to steal it onto there. Just post a clip and link to the original video ^o^ ))
Always credit me in text as and when possible (in title or description); don't try hiding my watermark then hiding the real credit berried at the bottom where no one will see, I see this a lot with a lot of animator's hard work ;-; . (credit can just be my name, but a link to my channel or the original video is much apricated! :D )
TLDR: Do whacha like, along as you're not stealing the video or claiming it to be yours! ^-^b

So for context, I accidentally started a thread on Twitter of DogDay doing the Playboy spread which stemmed from a moment I recorded on VRC where I got someone with full-body tracking to do the spread.
I never expected it to blow up like it did & now there is fuckin' fanart of my clip & the video has been spread like wildfire of DogDay spreading them legs LMAO
So here is some of my Smiling Critters reacting to this new thread, God, help them! X'D

i started half life alyx today and both as a half life fan and as my first big vr experience outside of slight dabbling in vrc and like 20 minutes playing the lab its shocking (positive)
playing the first section and not only seeing the half life world again but in such high fidelity and functionally -in person-, being able to grab and look at all these props and goofing around with them in first person and interacting with them and existing in that space with that level of interactivity, even seeing some props straight from hl2 effectively just remade in high fidelity is an emotional experience when you can reach out and touch them, seeing the city 17 playground and realising its not just pressing e to make blocks spin ,you can reach out and touch those blocks and spin them and play with them yourself, or picking up a crate and having physics objects sit inside it and not jitter out, seeing something like that in a game is impressive on its own, but its a "real" thing youre touching and interacting with.
i know it was really frustrating to see valve finally come back to half life after 13 years of almost complete silence on it and have it be a vr game when its such a niche market, but playing the game and feeling it its not just a fun game in its own right so far of what ive played, but its so much the logical next big step for half life. the whole series is built around the idea of creating an immersive world that you have to interact with and building a compelling first person action game from that, making it a world you can reach out and touch and "feel" is a perfect series and design ethos to take to vr.
like you see the game in trailers or gameplay clips or whatever and youre like wow its gorgeous and the gameplay looks really interesting and immersive and then you play the game and youre so in shock with the feeling of being there and playing the first new half life game in 13 years and all of that washes over you all at once and you stand there on the balcony at the start for like 10 minutes just grabbing things and letting it all wash over you
legitimately almost cried getting to the playground and seeing those props again from this new angle and having all of this wash over me in the first chapter and a half of the game

Let's talk world building. What does Cyber Space look like in Digital Verse. Is it a big space full of glitches, websites, flying flat video clips and apps, or is it something else entirely?
Hi! Sorry for the late response, just been busy as of late!
I have one word for you:
VRChat.
Well.. okay, it's not quite VRChat literally, but it is similar in nature where there are different "worlds" and you need to physically traverse through portals in order to go to other worlds (ignoring the search function VRC has). Each website can have its own world to represent it, which big sites usually do because all the upkeep is being handled by Programs. The user experience of the website and the world are two completely separate things. Not every world has a website, but most websites have a world.
There are hub worlds that have portals to popular worlds (again like VRChat) and anything outside of these hub worlds or popular worlds is considered the "wild web".
I was inspired by VRChat not just cause "well it's a virtual world duhh", I was specifically inspired by this video by Straszfilms (very good video, highly recommend) which explains how VRChat is the new old web in it's nature, and this is important cause the story of Terminally Online takes place in about 1997-1998, one of those years.
These worlds can be shaped to look like anything so the possibilities are endless, however there is a particular aesthetic I'm trying to go for that a majority of worlds have:
Stuff straight out of Bryce 3D, Paul Wiley's works, and 80's geometric sci-fi art. There's also some of early 2000's aesthetics like Y2K, which didn't pop off until after 1997, but this is an alternate timeline so whatevs lol.
The aesthetic of digitalverse and how it works is something I really want to get right, so I'm taking a lot of time to research and think about how it operates. It's one of the main things that is slowing me down so to speak in progress on TO. It's an ambitious project visually, there's a lot I want to do. Things are still very W.I.P and subject to change, but I think a lot of what I said is the core foundation.
#ask#terminally online#digitalverse#again sorry for taking so long to respond#i spent like a week trying to put my thoughts into words about this

Overall competency level with making an avatar look nice. I'm gradually getting comfortable with all the bells and whistles here and there. Even the bones and weight painting side of things, it was noticeably easier and faster this time around. I already had a less than vague idea of how to approach it and I got the straps redone. Rounded the khnfucat trinket, no problem. I could still stand to go through the donut tutorial in its entirety to iron out my knowledge of all the capabilities of blender and how to do it, including the stuff I don't do right now like renders.
But yeah. Originally the trenchcoat idea was off of watching kippicat's community showcase at furality. He has that heartless looking avvie with the organization style jacket. I thought I could find it myself and found something else instead, and I made it work. I learned so much out of it, I padded out the identity of my mayu sona with it. I even get commissioned for a retexture. My power and knowledge grows and I'm able to keep making these small additions here and there, and people definitely notice it. I love that so much. People will never fully understand or appreciate all the little things I've done for the avatar especially the less noticeable stuff but they appreciate it as a whole and that's enough for me to keep at it. Azuki himself recognizes it, I'm one of the mayus with custom clothing that many never learn that far to do, and that makes me recognizable, that makes me stand out. And the fact that beyond gumroad assets and shaders the rest of my work is pretty much all me, it feels like I've earned it. I feel accomplished as someone who works on avatars, even if it's mostly just my own.
Also I guess the fun thing about avatar work is community content. You can shop around for stuff on gumroad for things like clothing, based, accessories, whatever, but you don't just stick with what you get. You gotta tweak it to fit your colors, you have free reign to make whatever edits you want after you get the asset. So it's legalized art theft in a way. You're editing someone else's work, or your editing a base someone else made, or you're using a shader someone else made. It is a very collaborative process, and while it is useful to be able to do things like make your own assets and models, especially for small things that are easy to make, generally most people look for what's available before they start making something themselves. There is a lot of work sharing that makes avatar work more accessible than regular artwork. And there's so much you can do with tweaks to material settings that is significantly easier than drawing. It's helpful to know how to draw to make your own textures more customized, but beyond that it's more knowledge based. Knowing how the different features of poiyomi work, knowing how the masks behave, knowing how to get vrc fury to behave the way you want it to. It is much more accessible for a non artist to be able to get somewhere and make things look nice under their own power than be dealing with clip studio or whatever art program and trying to draw precise lines or build anatomy from scratch on an empty canvas with a drawing tablet you might not even have. No, instead I am able to thrive here.
