Lyria being referred to as a “member of the horn gang” and then subsequently an “agent” of the sovereign when she 100% was never in a gang nor sent on a mission by Virginia will send me every time.
The way people refer to her like she’s so menacing and official.. then you meet her and she’s just like “listen idk how I got here I’m just as confused as you are.”

When Lysander au Lune is inevitably destroyed, I hope we get a nice theraputic group murder. I want Sevro in there with Cassius's eagle knife. I want Lyria in there with 18 bullets to get vengeance for losing yet another loved one. Hell, Volga can get in on it to get vengeance for the most handsome man she's ever seen. And obviously Darrow can finish the job Reaper style. Is that too much to ask?

Do you think Lyria told Cassius about her plan to talk to Volga before she asked Darrow to let her do it? I bet she did. She promised Cassius she would run any potentially stupid plans by him first, and they spitshook on it. I think Lyria would have kept her word on that. She expected Darrow to keep his word to her, after all, and telling Sevro to remind Darrow of his promise was what got Darrow to hear her out. It would seem a spitshake is not something Reds take lightly.
So, I believe Lyria discussed her plan with Cassius, and he hated it as Sevro expected. However, I think he also understood it and respected it and gave Lyria his support pretty quickly. It's the same choice he would have made in her shoes. Diomedes had just told him that Lysander was probably dead. Cassius believed he had been too late to reach Lysander, but Lyria could still reach her friend. There's a good chance that they'd been talking about possible ways to get to Volga and how to deal with the Obsidians for a while. Sevro said that he'd heard Lyria practicing Nagal every night, and we also know that she stayed up many nights with Cassius and there seemed to be little they didn't talk about.
I've already gushed on my blog about how protective Cassius and Lyria were of each other, but Cassius also deserves some recognition for his decision to not protect Lyria when he left her with Sigurd. He really didn't want to do that. He was so scared for her and wanted so badly to keep her safe. Obviously, he knew couldn't stay and make himself a target for Ascomanni. That would put Lyria in danger too. However, he didn't have to leave her behind. He could have picked her up and taken her with him, and Lyria wouldn't have been able to do a thing about it. He could have even justified it pretty easily. The plan had gone awry. He could not confirm for himself that Sigurd's friends were still coming. He had far more warfare experience than Lyria, and that gave him the authority to make the call. Scrapping Lyria's plan would not cause any problems for Darrow and Sevro's plan; they seriously doubted she could succeed at turning Volga anyway. Despite all this, Cassius chose not to get in Lyria's way. He understood her heart. He knew that she had to take this risk for Volga, just like he would have (and later would) take a huge risk for Lysander. And because he cared for her, he had to risk losing her. Cassius chose to yield his protectiveness and instead respect Lyria's choice, which was just as brave a moment for him as any of the fights he had in this book.

#oh god yes all of this thank you#so much recycling going on in lb#we already know cassius changed#we already know he and sevro are okay(ish)#we already know lysander is an irredeemable waste of space#darrow has already been hurt a fuckton#we didn't have to go over all of that again#and given that mornings are supposed to symbolize new beginnings and brighter futures#there's something painfully unsatisfying about thee morning knight just...dying like that#like that's it? that's IT? boooo#'i know i missed the war but maybe that's a good thing. you and sevro are stuck in a brawl that you can't look up from.'#see i LOVED this line bc i've been saying this for years#i thought this would prove to be the whole point of cassius fucking off for 10 years straight with no contact#i thought he'd come back eventually and bring some much needed fresh perspective and maybe even optimism to the republic#(not that he isn't just as fucked in the head as everyone else is#but at least his damage is different enough by now to make smth like that work)#'if i could do it all again i wouldn't try to shape you. i'd try to let you shape me into what you needed.'#let him prove it then! there's lyria there's volga (whose razormaster he would've been) let him actually do it right this time!#pierce to me has always walked that very delicate line between meaningful and pure shock value deaths with his writing#and so far he's made it work beautifully but you know what?#after da i'm exhausted#enough pain porn you've made your point now do something else#hmm i popped off a little lol sorry op and everyone who decided to read all that#red rising
Oh no, we aren't leaving all this in the tags, @rangersbecket !
Cassius Should Have Lived for More (of the story).
I was very upset that Cassius died in Light Bringer because he's been my favorite character since the first book. However, I was careful not to rush to call it a bad choice to kill him off. I was worried that I might be biased because he was my fave, so I sat with it for a while and reflected on Cassius's role in the book and the series. I did like that we got so much of him in LB. Ultimately, though, I do think better choices could have been made with how to use him.
It felt like we went over a lot of old ground that we didn't need to. Cassisus and Sevro's conflict and resolution in LB was okay, but not nearly as good as in MS. I'd have rather seen them at a new point in their relationship, especially after a decade of life experience. For example, how interesting would it have been to have Cassius expect to have Sevro say, "I told you we should have killed Lysander as a kid!" only for Sevro instead to tell him he's changed his mind because he's a father now? That could have led to meaningful connection between them. Instead, we got Sevro & Cassius using Lysander and Ulysses to hurt each other.
There was also a lot of emphasis on Cassius's redemption, but I felt he'd proven himself well in MS & IG, especially in Darrow's eyes. We already knew that Cassius believed in the ideals of the Rising. He didn't need to rescue all those kids from the Obsidians to show that (sweet and brave as it was). Darrow already put his faith in him at the end of MS and asked him to stay and help build the Republic. Why does he show so much doubt in Cassius in LB? Even at the end, he's thinking how he wished Cassius had come around to their side sooner, as if Cassius hadn't spent over a decade helping out people of all colors whenever he found them in need. Sure, you can always grow more as a person, and redemption can be complicated, but I didn't like how redemption was treated as such a big thing in Cassius's story at this point in the story. I felt like it was time to move on to something new in his journey.
Finally, Cassius's death felt so much like Alexandar's that it seemed like Brown really wanted Lysander to have a scene like that to lead into the final book. So when he decided to add an extra book, he basically repeated the scene, but with an even bigger character to hit the audience harder.
It would have been more interesting to have Cassius return to the Core publicly and face everyone who had all these preconceived ideas of who he was. He talked about not wanting to return to that because he was afraid, so let us see him do it! Also, we could have seen Cassius choose his place in this new society, no longer burdened and chained by the expectations of his family and caste.(Though, of course, he'd have an excellent confrontation scene with Julia). That would have been a more interesting and fresher character arc for him.
