Dragon Ball Super 022

This is the one where Gotenks headbutts a guy in the dick.

Oh, this is also the one where Tagoma rips off Piccolo’s arm like he’s nothing.  It’s weird how this is like the third wildest thing to happen in this episode.  So I guess this is the high water mark for this saga.

So after the arm-ripping-off thing, Gotenks arrives with the headbutt to stop Tagoma, and then he immediately de-fuses into Goten and Trunks.  Frieza recognizes Goten as Goku’s son, and he thinks Trunks is the son of the mysterious Super Saiyan who killed him eighteen years ago.  Little does Frieza know that this was the future AU counterpart of Trunks, but no one has time to go over that now.

Then, while Tagoma tends to his wounded groin, Captain Ginyu shows up to steal his body.  He can’t speak, which means he can’t say the magic words to do the bodyswap trick, but he does write some words in the dirt, and tricks Tagoma into reading them aloud, and somehow that works just as well. 

Of course, Frieza has no idea what just happened, so Ginyu has to explain his entire backstory.  He got turned into a frog while fighting Vegeta, then he got teleported to Earth when Porunga granted Dende’s wish to evacuate Namek, and he’s been stranded here ever since, putting up with various hardships and indignities while figuring out his next move.  But now he’s back, in Tagoma’s body, which is more powerful than any other body Ginyu has ever had, so he’s rarin’ to get back to work as Frieza’s underling. 

And he does really well, until Gohan turns Super Saiyan and kicks him in the dick.  Kind of weird how this isn’t even the best groin injury in this episode. 

Okay, so I have a question.  If all Ginyu needed to do was to trick someone else into saying the words, then why didn’t he do that a long time ago?  I mean, he’d have to learn Earth’s language and alphabet, and then find someone dumb enough to read it aloud, but he’s been stuck like this for almost twenty years, and what else was taking up his time?

I think it would have been a better gag if he revealed that he had been training for years to use his froggy body to produce the sounds needed to vocalize the words.  Not true speech, but just enough to get the words “change now!” out of his throat. 

Meanwhile, Goku and Vegeta are stuck in some unknown dimension Whis sent them to.  They can’t move at all, no matter how hard they try, until Vegeta recalls one of Whis’s lessons about ki control.  According to Whis, their problem is that they “leak” ki energy all over the place while they fight, and this is inefficient.  He wants them instead to focus on containing all their power as they use it.  So when Vegeta tries to apply this concept, he finds he can move again. 

However, that still doesn’t save them.  Goku thinks this place is similar to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and if it’s an endless void with no exit, then they might starve to death.  Goku figures that Beerus must train in this place, which means he must have a pantry somewhere, so they start looking for one.

Meanwhile, Gohan shows Ginyu mercy, which reminds Frieza a little too much of the time Goku showed him mercy back on Namek.  This was a nice touch, since it shows that Frieza isn’t just mad about losing to Goku or getting killed.  Those are the main beefs he has, but he’s also furious about the humiliation he suffered, and the torment he endured in hell, and the way Goku pitied him in the end.  So Frieza starts shooting Gohan himself, and orders Ginyu to stand down.

Then, just before Frieza can finish him off, Piccolo jumps in to take the killing shot, and dies.  This seemed kind of pointless to me on the first viewing, but now it seems more obvious.  They needed something to add a story beat to this arc, since Gohan already got death-beamed in the last episode.  The movie had Frieza nearly kill him, and then he ate a senzu bean and got better.  Episodes 21 and 22 basically try to spread that out across two episodes, which doesn’t make sense.  So it’s better to have Piccolo take a shot like this than to have Gohan do it twice. 

Of course, it just demonstrates that stretching these movies out across ten or more episodes is a bad call.  They would have been better off just not bothering, but no one consulted me on this.

Tw: Death

“W-Will you- wi-will you... s-stay?” 

The crouched figure nodded, tears spilling and washing away the blood staining the young one’s cheek. Their arm wrapped around the young bleeding sidekick; comforting and secure.

Though freezing in the snow, warmth swept over the young teen as their friend gently guided tears away from their increasingly pale face. They were calming, a soft light in the uncertainty of death. Smiling languidly at the Villain, the young one chuckled, grabbing on to Villain’s hand weakly stroking it. Their chin trembled, swallowing down a whimper, their lips parted.

“[Vi-villain]... I... I-”

“Shh...” They shook their head, placing a tender hand over Sidekick’s mouth. “Shh... I- I know. I know...”

“Th-thank you...”

And there it was. 

The emptiness. The hollowed out eyes, void of any life. No longer breathing and possibly- well, probably, upon seeing that they had many numerous good deed under their belt. 

With a sharp exhale and a shaky hand, the Villain hovered it over the Sidekick’s now pale, dull eyes, gingerly closing them for the last time. Lowering themselves while they brought the young one up into a longing embrace before planting a last kiss.

“...Farewell.”

002. Do they do anything to celebrate their birthday?

He treats himself to some mead and some sweet bread, but otherwise, won’t acknowledge it further. He used to celebrate it more, but his last real “celebration” was when he turned 16. Or, you could count when he was 30, after Pathonia passed down the mantle of the SI:7 and Assassin’s Guild to him.

He doesn’t hide his birthday but it’s also not information he offers. Occasionally an agent will respectfully bring him something, and the sentiment warms him greatly. But still, business as usual.

Love that cinnamon bread though.

009. Do they believe in happy endings?

Hard no.

Hardly even believes in endings for that matter. Everything keeps going in a vicious cycle. Sometimes, you just happen to be alive for it. But nothing stops, nothing ends, and certainly, no one gets the ending they want or deserve.

It’s just how it is. You enjoy the good moments you get in the meantime.

031. Are they superstitious about anything?

Mathias is a very practical man. He thinks objectively and logically about everything, even magic, and will always, ALWAYS shut down every irrational superstitious thought that comes up.

But Old Gods scare him, only because he knows deep down inside that if he absolutely needed to, or saw advantage to it, he’d succumb to Void ( The Stormwind Vision shows us that he gave in for sight, for knowledge, not for strength. Of course, the master of spies would give in for infinite sight! ) So, as a cautionary ritual, the candles he uses are all blessed by priests. Just in case. It probably doesn’t do much, to be illuminated by relatively holy fire, but it makes him feel better to be shielded from darkness by something allegedly holy.

I mean, kobolds had to be onto something.

062. What sort of legacy does your character wish to leave behind?

He’s... not sure. Whatever it is, he’s sure it won’t top his grandmother’s — but essentially, he’d like to be known as two crucial things: Efficient, and of course, the master of assassins.

Actually, that’s it, really. He’d like everyone to know he’s the best of the damn best no question. If he gets a tombstone, write that there.

       022. What is the most beautiful thing they’ve ever seen?

       BEAUTY is something that YOZORA is rarely exposed to, or CONSCIOUSLY perceived. Growing up within the CAGED WALLS of laboratories, the VERUM REX didn’t have the opportunity to view anything TRADITIONALLY ‘BEAUTIFUL’.The first few weeks following his ESCAPE from Gigas Corporation, EXPOSED him to the outside world: which ADMITTEDLY, he did have a FASCINATION for at the time… particularly the VIEW of entire Ark from the CITY ROOFTOPS, and the vastness of the GALAXIES above. Now however, it was merely a BATTLEFIELD: the memories of WAR against the Gigas tarnishing any BEAUTY he once perceived.

       031. Are they superstitious about anything?

       YOZORA doesn’t consider himself SUPERSTITIOUS in the extreme sense. He once held a STRONG DISBELIEF in destiny and religion, but now with BOTH being pivotal to his DIVINE ROLE in the universe ( the WATCHMEN OF FATE bequeathing him the crown of the GOD OF DEATH ), Yozora has no choice but to BELIEVE— out of the fear of not UNDERSTANDING otherwise. He has never believed in LUCK, only to be further REINFORCED by the Watchmen’s guidance on KARMA. Everything happens for reason ( FATE ) as a RESULT of one’s actions in this and previous lifetimes ( CONSEQUENCE ), and nothing happens by CHANCE. Talismans and rituals to AVERT or CATALYSE the course of destiny are thus seen as VOID. Four leaf clovers, rabbit’s feet… all are USELESS to the Verum Rex.

       042. What is their greatest achievement?

       Yozora personally, commends HIMSELF for his achievements in BATTLE. Engineered as a WEAPON OF WAR, the commander only acknowledges his FEATS in strength and tactics. He CONSIDERS his most impressive achievement to be the STAGED INVASION on one of the largest Gigas research facilities, destroying a HORDE of iron titans SINGLEHANDEDLY and freeing an ENTIRE BUILDING of enslaved victims. However, his GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT ( which he will not acknowledge ALONE ), is his acceptance of his CROWN as Verum Rex: SACRIFICING the humanity he was so RELENTLESSLY in pursuit of, to ASCEND as the god of death: all in an effort to SAFEGUARD the universe.

This is a weird one in our discography.There are a few records that shouldn't really happen, but somehow do. The story on why this exists is maybe more interesting than the release itself. We hearken back to MySpace for the origins of this release. A label from Mexico messaged us and asked us if they could put this tape out. I have honestly forgot the name of the label and the beginning of the conversation that stated the name was wiped when MySpace mass-wiped everyone's accounts. We had never were on a tape before, so it seemed fun. At that time, Empire! had two releases and I'm pretty sure both of them went out of print during this process. We had self-released our EP, "When the Sea Became a Giant" and "Year of the Rabbit" was the first CYLS release. People were asking for our music, but we just didn't have anything at the time and were focused on finishing our full length. This, theoretically, would have filled the void. The label got someone to do the art who went by the name of Balaz who was Belgium. I think it is this artist: @wardzwart. It's hard to follow breadcrumbs through really old emails and we never actually knew who it was or talked to them about it. This is the first time I've thought to try and track the person down. The label first messaged us in early/mid 2008 and the tape came out in the summer of 2010. It was a slow process with large gaps in between conversations. There were several promises of the tapes going to the plant. In the summer of 2009, they finally launched pre-orders. A few months passed, and we started to get people asking us when their tapes would be shipping. We asked the label and got no response. Actually, that was the last time we ever heard of them. One of our friends, Jacob was one of the people who pre-ordered the record.
