Apparently, she was taking sword lessons before she was even taught how to read. I was curious about whether her mom was going to be abusive towards her like in hi3 after she talked about her in the Aurum Alley event, and between her ch story part 4 and this, I'm leaning towards yes.

I was also wondering if Suyi would ever be playable, seeing as she basically has the same amount of character depth as Feima (hi3 Yanqing), and the fact that Sushang is bringing her up the moment Yaoqing characters were added gives me some hope.

these are more meta questions 4 your ask blog, so i thought i should ask them here, lol. is gordon in the story streaming the game and we're the chat? if characters answer our questions, is that gordon typing out our questions and asking the NPCs directly? also, finally, were there any pieces of media u were inspired by? (other than hlvrai and tma, lol)

Gordon isn’t much of a streamer in my AU, especially with how the game begins to affect him, the asks or ‘statements’ people send are not a live chat but Gordon begins to view it as one, I actually had ideas for as it progressed he begins to refer to the senders as “chat” bc it sort of acts like one.

The statement aspect (in regards to the asks) isn’t ment to be one that you think too hard on since that is just how I’ve chosen to incorporate asks into the storyline but it IS something that is part of the game, Gordon says so in the beginning, in tma occasional statements are actually messages directed to Jon and it’s kind of just that.

Gordon recieves papers with strange comments or questions and he just navigates the game.

When talking to the npcs he isn’t always ‘present’ so to say, occasionally it’s just the statement giver ‘talking’ to the npcs, the other members in the archives also have statements to fill out too, sometimes Gordon is present when it comes to asks that are more lore focused (or that are funnier with a second person there) but just general questions to the npcs they can answer on their own.

‘In universe’ I personally imagine that the statements would just appear as papers to them with the messages, they don’t really question it since that is how their world operates and what is normal

I don’t know if this counts but vaguely DDLC? Just in terms of the visual novel style (where I got the idea for it to be a visual novel game) aside from the fact I already thought tma would have made a great VN game, but also in terms of theme of “this game is very much not what it seems” but that also just comes from combining hlvrai and tma, they are both very different but also pretty similar in a lot of aspects and for it to work it needs to be much more serious which means cranking up whatever of hlvrai could be considered ‘serious’.

So like for example the broken npcs, in tla:ai it’s portrayed in a more serious way which kind of draws back to the fucked up broken npc thing going on in ddlc unintentionally, a lot of the vague ddlc inspo is by accident of just trying to make being self aware a horror aspect 😭

i saw a post talking about companies making fun of visual novels for april fools and it made me think about the VN i wanted to make basically you are some random human with an interest for monsters, doing some research you stumble with an apparently abandoned building in the middle of the woods. You enter to inspect it, maybe there's something interesting inside? You're greeted by the place's maid, a woman with arachnid features. Turns out the building is in reality some sort of hotel for cryptids passing by. Somehow, you make your way to end up working on the hotel, and the overall goal of the game is to get closer to the monsters without ending up killed by them. I was thinking a bad ending would mean death of course, but you could also get killed simply if you wrong them too much? don't get me wrong, they're sweet once you get to know them, but they're still monsters, after all.

ofc you can romance them and they won't kill you if you are friends with them lol some of the ideas i had for the routes would be the anxious spider maid, a divorced werewolf lumberjack, some sort of frankenstein monster's "doctor" (they're aroace tho! so no romance on that route, still u can be friends with them) and the owner of the hotel, a spoiled vampire that's also kind of a shut in. those are pretty basic monsters tho so i would like to get funkier with the rest of the cast : ^]

basically, i joined the life is strange fandom in 2018 so i never got to experience the pre-bts era, meaning i didn’t get to experience what rachel was like to the fandom back then or see the different interpretations of her.

i did some digging and i found some fan content of her from 2015-2016 & i’m absolutely infatuated with all aspects of the fanon version of her, especially her personality & how she looked. i totally wanna embody her. also the love is strange vn was so interesting to play, i love how she was written. i’d love to know more!

i assume that rachels treatment in the fandom was different then than what it is now. whether it’s better or worse, i’m not sure. i was hoping u could answer that too😞. recently i’ve just been seeing constant hatred or lack of care for her character so i’m starting to think that if bts was written differently and based on the fandom’s interpretations instead, the hate now wouldn’t be this bad.

from my digging it seems like you guys had alot of fun sculpting rachel’s character on your own, and the interpretations were probably more realistic than what decknine put together.

hiii u def did not bother me, i am not in a position to answer all of these questions, but although it makes me feel ancient, it's cute to see so much passion for rachel and pre-BTS fandom opinion, so i'll try answer some and for the rest (art, hcs, etc.) im just gonna have to direct you to my archive* (will continue under the readmore)

*(tumblr archive is so broken on mobile so you gotta go on pc for this, but also there's so many gifs from that time so it will Definitely slow down your browser). i was insane and 17 years old so like, just excuse all of the cringe content i guess. you can click tag and filter it by either #lis #rachel amber #amberprice or whatever to try and find stuff like art. and i got into lis sept 2015 so that's like, as far back as it will go, but i was fully lisbrained from 2016 through 2018)

to be honest, in alignment with pre-bts thought lmao, rachel is whoever you want her to be. there was less of 'this is a correct objective fact about her personality/history' and more 'yeah, this is an idea the fandom really likes and has become fanon, most likely because it is a nuanced and entertaining and realistic interpretation of what we have seen of her character in lis1' which means people whose opinions conflicted with that might've be contested/laughed at/unpopular, but they weren't wrong per se. there were plenty of people i'd criticise (and ridicule) back then for implying that this teenage girl was evil, and being a teenager myself back then, i'd call them morally reprehensible and cancellable and whatever, but tbh, as an adult now, i can just see that it was simply a boring interpretation of her character informed by misogyny

i'd disagree with the notion that fandom treatment of rachel's character was better before bts, back then there were plenty of people seemingly excited to characterise her as emotionally manipulative, a cheater, deserved what she got, etc. as well, bc tbh, the story did leave room for that interpretation, but it left room for so much more as well. i feel like bts just really locked in on a certain story they wanted to tell plot-wise, and didn't choose to explore a lot of the questions fans had about rachel as a person. it's hard to turn the ambiguity of a friendship turned situationship over a period of 4 years into a playable experience for an audience - so they didn't. regardless, it got people thinking about rachel more, putting a spotlight on her, hence increased attention both positive and negative. i feel like there's just a fundamental difference between what lis1 fans enjoyed about the potential for her character and how she related with chloe and the world around her, and what deck9 wanted to portray in bts (yes they hit the astrological headcanons, the charmingness, her rebellion, the emotional conflicts... but it personally felt hollow, contrived sometimes, i suppose). but there were a lot of people who loved bts (i enjoyed a lot of parts of it!). just, in my opinion, some of those were quite different people from who loved lis1, and with that wave it brought a lot of emotional immaturity to the fandom (like... ship wars, really? that was an insane change to fandom dynamics for me lmao, but maybe i was just spoiled by surrounding myself with people whose takes i respected)

anyway i highly recommend also that if you're hungry for that kind of content, read fanfiction on AO3 by the old fans - by Mogatrat (TON of rachel centric ones there), explosionshark and tippytypewriter, chicknparm (though Cusp is written post-bts, it's informed by pre-bts characterisations), vicepoint (me hehe), def many more good ones out there those r jus my friends so they come to mind first, e.g. i liked homecoming by kriegersan back in the day, but you could def find some more by sorting the lis ao3 page by kudos and reading the older ones that are highly rated featuring rachel. and lastly, my gf wrote a beautifully worded blog post called "The Assassination of Rachel Amber by the Cowards Dontnod and Deck Nine" which gets into some of this from a media crit perspective (not about fandom) in a very eloquent way thru comparison w twin peaks and i highly recommend that

rachel hcs that def started way before bts: skater rachel, stoner rachel, punk music listener rachel (but also like, fleetwood mac cranberries cocteau twins grungy hippy stuff rachel too), rachel's parents being distant and still living in california, curvy thick rachel, things that i've accepted as canon but were def created by diff people: bri explosionshark hc'd that rachel paid for chloe's sleeve, mogatrat (i think) hc'd that rachel initially went to get her nips pierced with chloe (that's a longtime fan hc now idk who started that one) but chickened out at the last minute, i think she also hc'd that chloe made the earring for rachel which is cute too

His eyes widened, pupil shrinking as he watched all the blood spill from your stabbed abdomen. The coward who had stuck the knife there immediately ran away before Harper could catch him.

Harper knew he could run after him, knew he’d have a pretty good chance at killing him. But there was also something else he knew.

After years of killing others, he knew how fatal your wound was.

No, he didn’t want to even think about what was happening.

He caught your fumbling body before it hit the ground, cradling your upper torso in his arms, all fear evident on his face. “C-Cara mia?” He knew how broken and fragile he sounded and how that would scare you a little, but he didn’t have the effort to hide it from you.

You winced as you shifted in his arms, “Harper…” You grit your teeth and flashed him a smile. “I-It’s fine, everything’s going to be alright, hm?”

God, he loved your smiles. The ones you would make when you enjoyed his food, the ones you made after kissing him and leaving him breathless, the ones you reassured him that he was not a bad person and would never be, the one you made when he first got on one knee. All of them.

Even if you were dying, you still managed to smile for him. His heart stuttered in his chest, his love and fear for you both taking over. He let out a watery chuckle, shaking his head in disbelief, “Y-You’re so bad for me, darling.” He brought the hand that your engagement ring sat on before kissing it. The cool metal brushed his chapped lips as a tear slipped down his face. “...Please don’t leave me, cara mia. We still,” His breath hitched and a silent sob wracked through his body, “We still haven’t gotten married yet. You can’t… You can’t do this to me.”

You coughed on the blood coagulating in your throat, droplets of blood making it onto his shirt. “A-Aw man, I got your shirt dirty…” Your eyes began to gloss over with tears, hearing Harper beg for you not to leave made things feel a lot more serious. “If it cheers you up, Harper, I do.”

“W-What?” His confusion caused him to blink back his tears before he tilted his head to the side, “I… What?”

You let out a set of broken laughter and he had to suppress a flinch. You never laughed like that, you never laughed like you were having a bad time, you never laughed like you were going to die-

Oh.

His eyebrows furrowed as if that act itself would stop the tears from forming.

And of course, because you knew him so so so well, you tried to give him a reassuring smile, “I do, Harper. I do love you, and I will marry you. Through life and through death.” Tears trickled down your face as you wiped at the dry tracks of Harper’s face, “Through sickness and health and whatnot. Harper, will you…aghk― will you marry me too?”

He stifled a whimper, his bottom lip trembling, “Of course I will, always, always, always for you, cara mia.” He craned his neck so his face met yours and he kissed you before setting you back down in his lap.

“Harper, Harper, it hurts…” You gave him one last weak look before your eyes flickered up to him. You entwined your fingers with his and brought them to your lips. “I love you, Harper. More, hgk— more than, more than I’ve ever loved anyone. Okay, darling?”

He begged through tears, grasping your hand so tight, he could’ve broken your hand. But he’d never do that to you, he loved you so much. He loved you too much. He wouldn’t let you leave. “Please. Please don’t say that like you’re…” His chest wracked with sobs he was too heartbroken over to care. “Like you’re dying. You can’t. You can’t leave me, cara mia. You wouldn’t.” His lungs cried and wailed for proper oxygen intake, his brain told him he needed to breathe, but how could he? How could he dare to breathe when he knew soon enough, you wouldn’t share the same air as him.

And god, if that didn’t shatter his heart into pieces.

“Please, please, please. They can’t― They can’t take you—! Please, please, please, please…” Each repeated word was followed by tears falling from his face to yours.

If he wasn’t so overcome with his sorrow, maybe he’d have already noticed how you had already died.

Your blank eyes stared back at his glassy blue ones. He rested his face in his hand, propped on his knee as he held you to his chest, cries unabashedly rocking through his body as he had to believe it.

Believe you were gone.

Believe some coward had taken the light of his life away, forever.

Believe some scum had taken away the person he was supposed to spend the rest of his life with.

Anyone else on the street would’ve seen him chanting meaningless words of ‘please, please, please’ and ‘love you so much, love you, please don’t leave me.”

But all Harper could see was you, broken and shattered in his arms.

Harper couldn’t eat, he couldn’t sleep properly. Everywhere he went was a reminder of you.

He tried, he tried so hard to move on. He tried not to isolate himself. God, he had even shut himself off from his Nonna. She didn’t deserve that. It was all because of him, because he would never be good enough to save you, to save himself. Because it was all his fault that he couldn’t have seen it coming. He should’ve been more careful, been more cautious. 

Friend had come over to reassure him that he understood losing a loved one, but he just… he just didn’t. He didn’t know what it meant to lose the love of his life, didn’t know how Harper had spent nights just replaying it over and over in his head. 

Some nights were even worse because some days, he’d never tell a single soul, some days he forgot what you looked like, couldn’t picture your face anymore because it had been so long since he had seen you smiling at him. Those nights were the worst. How could he have forgotten his spouse, someone he had dedicated his life to?

God, he was such a piece of shit for forgetting you.

Friend only had his sweetheart, but Harper had other people to care for.

His Nonna.

But he couldn’t handle the pain your death had caused him and refused to let anyone else share it.

He had to look at your photos just to have some feeling of what it was like to be yours because he kept forgetting. He kept forgetting and forgetting what it was like to love someone like you.

You were his world and how could he ever forget it?

Was it because you weren’t there to remind him?

I do want to expand on the lore that goes into the game but I'm still brainstorming/going over routes and other things that didn't make it into the [Extended Demo]. I'm trying REALLY hard to not accidently show spoilers and I did a lot of that during the game development unfortunately. :,,,]

This is hinted and shown a couple of times within the game/art but it's part of his love language towards the player(Y/N). It depends on the situation but there's a few reasons for this. To explain JUST one of them, it's because he finds comfort being close to you. This expression of affection will be something that'll be approached again in the full game since he does this a few times! :,]

September is here! I always think of this month as my sister’s month because she was born in September lol. Anyway, I was lowkey happy Beau won the character poll because it means I get to dedicate September’s cover art to my sister’s fave color: yellow. Happy Birth Month, lil bro~ Big Love!

What’s Happening in September?

Well, the poll this month will be a little different. Usually, we vote on who next month’s cover model will be. This month, however, I was thinking — since the whole month of October is basically Halloween and peeps dress up — we could vote for Kaimana’s Halloween costume this year? Last year I put ‘em in an ATSV Spider-Man 2099 costume, hehehe. This year, IT’S UP TO YOU! It’ll be fun. It’ll be GREAT. To the left are the options, all tsunderes because I’m so weak for tsunderes and I consider Kai to be one as well lol. Poll drops this Friday, September 6.

Other than that, I’ll be continuing to stitch Froot Basket White together and draw Ippon! pages. I’m hoping to finish adding all the voiced lines so I can work on drawing/cleaning stuff up in the coming months! You can read about my progress below!

I now have all the voiced lines for Sutoro and Azrael! I’ve been inputting them into the current build. Check out a preview of Sutoro’s voiced lines!

I also received some track samples from our composer! I can’t show you right now, but, trust me. It’s a banger and a chill cafe bop for sure! The composer I’m working with went to town on it! I’m so happy with how it’s turning out! It’s got lyrics and vocals too!

I adjusted one of Sutoro’s poses because the anatomy seemed off. BUT! I also wanted to add more poses to make Sutoro a little more lively to match Jesse’s performance. Here’s some of those new sprites I’m working on!

Comic Creation | Ippon!

I haven’t talked about Ippon! in a while, mostly because I haven’t been spending a lot of time on it. I… went back and adjusted some previous panels, and I keep going back and forth between adding more pages to adjust the pace or not…

One of the things I changed, for example, are the shape of the panels on page 4 (above). I noticed as I was drawing that I tend to have a lot of dynamic panels. There were so many, that I thought it became hard to read or even look at the pages… It bummed me out a bit, so I had to stop drawing for a bit lol.

Another thing I learned: having to really think about how two pages sit next to each other. I saw online somewhere that comic artists plan out their page turns. That’s something I’d like to keep in mind too.

Other than that, I’m trying to learn to pace myself better. Some pages take longer to complete than others. For me right now, this action page (above) is taking a lot out of me. I expected it would because I’m trying to figure out where everything is situated — the anatomy, whether or not the action makes sense, etc.

I was thinking about adding the name of the move somewhere, kinda like how in shounen action series characters name their moves and whatnot or have it written out on the page or something. But I’m not too sure exactly how I’m going to go about doing that…

Cover Story | Meet Beau!

Sweet, energetic, loving Beau. In the Froot Basket series, he’s the player character Jordan’s childhood friend and neighbor! They played basketball together in baby days and continued hanging out and growing together in high school! Beau loves eating, gaming, reading comics, and playing basketball with his pals! He also has a big crush on Jordan and a big dislike of bananas — they’re mushy!

Along with Sutoro, Beau was one of the first characters I doodled when I came up with this lil series. He and Sutoro were best friends. He was meant to be a sorta delinquent character, hence the piercings and dyed undercut hairstyle. But as I developed him more and more, he just seemed like a sweetheart through and through.

I tried to include a bunch of yellow things in the background and in the illustration’s design. I’m hoping it displays Beau’s fun-loving personality! A few Easter Eggs: Beau’s playing Froot Basket Valentine on his handheld console and Froot Basket: Dark Chocolate on his desktop.

Momotarou Post-Mortem

Momotarou was the micro-visual novel I impulsively made in July for O2A2 Jam. I managed to write the post-mortem for it late last month! If you’re interested in my thought process for the project’s creation, read it here!

I can’t believe it’s already been 50 days since I released the micro-visual novel! Time flies… A few peeps have play-throughs that I’ve very much enjoyed! Thank you so much for playing! I also received some really great feedback and observed some peeps getting confused. I’ll be updating the game with a few sentences referring to Froot Basket Valentine, the game whose events immediately precede the events of Momotarou.

Next Month?

I will be in Japan the second half of October! I’m excited and can’t wait to have a bunch of fun and eat a lot of food! I’m planning to wear pink every day! I hope I’ll remember to take OOTD pics instead of just food pics… I’ll try to have the cover art for November done before I leave, but whatever will be will be.

Anyway, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s instead have a relaxing September!
