Disclaimer: I didn't intend to write so much, so I'll put the rest under the cut

This is my take from the fandom standpoint...

I too really wish we'd get more visuals and not just of Noé and Vanitas (though I love them both). But I also feel like allowing fanservice "official artwork" can be a double edged sword. If it is in fact a sponsor issue that the anime didn't get more attention than it did (this is gonna sound bad bear with me) then that might actually be a good thing from a fandom standpoint.

This is very much just personal opinion, but I think when stories gain followers because of the "sex appeal" or whatever it takes away from the story. Im not saying a fan can't want that, but if someone's first impression to an anime/manga like VNC is fanservice, all the worldbuilding mochijun created kinda gets overlooked.

Out of curiosity I looked into ao3 stats for x reader fics of the two protags in VNC. There are 20 for Vanitas, and 12 for Noé. The Character!Name/Reader option doesn't even auto-populate in the filter for either of them. In literally any other fandom, thats unheard of. But this doesn't even suprise me. All the fandom interactions I've had (over the last ~10 months) have almost ALWAYS been about theory. A lot of fanwork too (hell, I even write some of it) but most all of it circles around canon.

And I LOVE that about this fandom.

Don't get me wrong, I think VNC is fully capable of (and should be) competing with the bigger name animes. Honestly in some ways I think it flat out beats some of them. I might even go as far to compare it to FMA. AND I think Mochijun deserves the absolute most amount of recognition for her storytelling. I mean, the woman is a genius (I can only image what awaits me when i read PH) and she deserves for VNC to succeed.

But, there's a selfish part of me that's ok with what we have in the fandom rn. I look at other fandoms that I will not name and although there are some good areas, I kinda like the majority of VNC being content with the story and not getting stuck in an echochamber where the fanon takes can be... not that great.

I'm all for the "curate your own internet experience" but some fandom spaces are just innately easier to navigate than others. And I'm proud of us for being pretty civil, from what I've seen.

TLDR: I want more arts too 😭 but fanservice is tricky. A lot of positive exposure can bring along some negative. But, personally, I'm okay with the smaller fandom feel for now. Y'all are great 💜

VNC personal ramblings about (lack of) anime official arts

Really wish VNC anime had *more* promotional arts in general ;A; (like this) especially when the visual aspect is important…cuz both manga and anime *are* visual. I know there’re several anime official arts for events and merch (including music covers), but I thought we’d get more than 3 illustrations (so far) for anime magazines T^T (the three are all still great, of course)

HAPPY FMA DAY!!! Because the first chapter to this is no where near completed AND I feel terrible about it (ie: im sick as all hell) I came up with a compromise...

Heres some planning notes from my VNC/FMA crossover. Please note: a big part of my world building uses a part of FMA that was only used in 03 (I promise it works hehe it makes for better angst)

1. Tell us about your WIP!

I have a lot of WIPs at the moment! If we’re talking fanfiction, though, I have a couple things in the works for X/1999 that are actually pretty far along. I’m in the middle of writing one about what would happen if Fuuma won; that one is currently online.

The other three I’m looking forward to putting up is a time travel fix-it fic for Subaru/Kamui where Kamui winds up in the Tokyo Babylon era. Another is a ghost story where Kamui is a medium and Subaru is a ghost (I love ghost stories and eventually it will be the only thing I write; just watch), and the other WIP that I have a surprisingly large amount of is another Kamui/Subaru story (!!!) that takes place 10 years in the future after Kamui won.

I also have the bare basics going for some COVID-19-inspired zombie/virus AUs for VNC at the very least and possibly FMA. We shall see…

As for original fiction, I’m in the midst of putting together a sci-fi/fantasy that involves cloning, magic, and FBI-style teamwork.

9. Favorite/least favorite tropes?

Hmm, favorite tropes… I don’t know why I always have such a hard time with this, but I do. XD I think tackling “what’s right” is something I like to see. For example, monsters that are more human than us and humans more monstrous than monsters. Guillermo del Toro tends to explain it very well and his films portray exactly what I’m interested in watching/reading more often than not.

I like to see cryptids and the occult in stories (and I try to include some of that in my fics!) and I like to see complex relationships both romantic and otherwise, but if it’s something I’m going to ship I generally want it to ultimately be positive in some fashion. Not necessarily a straightforward fashion, but I want there to be some spark that makes me think: this could work even if there are also all these difficulties.

I love Mulder/Scully type relationships where it’s a little vague as to where the relationship stands, but you know they utterly respect each other, support each other, and the sheer epicness of their relationship transcends pretty much anything else.

Another thing I like seeing is an ultimately hopeful future a la Star Trek. Grappling with philosophical dilemmas and boldly going where no one has gone? That is a great trope right there.

As for tropes I dislike, I kind of don’t like straightforward soulmate AUs after seeing so many of them. Like, the idea is fun, but what I really want to see is someone tackle how this idea of “soulmate” can ultimately be damaging and wrong and then I want to see someone break free from it in the story and forge their own path. Maybe I should write that….

Actually, most standard tropes are ones I want to see a little more variety happen with, both in fandom and in literary circles.

21. What aspect of your writing are you most proud of?

I think the thing I like most is that I’ve been more willing to experiment lately. That’s not a technical aspect of the writing process, but I have been having a lot of fun trying out odd ideas that maybe I wouldn’t have in the past.

22. Age You Started Watching Anime/Person Who Introduced You To It. Oh. I was a tiny child. Sailor Moon and DBZ. I never really stopped... Though I think watching InuYasha via TV in 9th grade was what triggered my unhealthy obsession with it now.

7. Anime You Are Currently Watching Kakegurui is the only seasonal anime I’m watching... and considering Touken Ranbu & 18if... If anyone has an opinion or a suggestion let me know.  ... I’m reading over a dozen manga, so. Lol. Big ones are Vanitas no Carte, Owari No Seraph, ANS, Akatsuki No Yona, Noragami, Skip Beat!, Ajin, Bungou Stray Dogs, Aoharu x Kikanjuu... probably going to add Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet to that.

3. Favorite Anime Character ...Singular? UHHH. You're all going to look at me funny, but I'm going to go with Shougo Makishima. Maybe. 

12. Anime That Should Get More Attention From Others Well, I always think Mochijun should get more attention. (Vanitas No Carte & the Pandora Hearts manga). But I'm not really sure. I'm not aware how big certain fandoms are. I do think some older series should at least get more recognition despite not having the same shiny appeal... for instance, godchild? Basically the older, canonly gay Kuroshitsuji (albeit, even though it's canon, it's lowkey). Yuki Kaori in general though... I was/am a big fan of hers just for the themes she was willing to get into.
