Book Recommendations: Cozy Holiday Mysteries
Aunt Dimity and the Heart of Gold by Nancy Atherton
It's almost Christmas in the English village of Finch - and everyone is sick. Though many of the villagers regretfully decline their invitations to Emma Harris's annual Christmas bash, Lori Shepherd has no intention of missing it. When the winter weather takes a turn for the worse, it's agreed that none of the guests will leave until morning. There's general merriment until a car slides into a ditch and the mysterious woman driving it, invited to stay the night, finds a secret compartment with treasure inside the home.
This is the 24th volume in the “Aunt Dimity Mystery” series.
Antiques Ho-Ho-Homicides by Barbara Allan
To Brandy Borne and her ditzy diva mother, homicide in small-town Serenity is the gift that keeps on taking. But murder turns merry as Brandy and Vivian gather collectible clues in a wintry workshop, seek the grinch who dimmed a pageant star's twinkle, and bag the humbug helper who snuffed a sidewalk Santa. Aided by Sushi, their elfin shih tzu, our seasonal sleuths crumble a bountiful batch of Christmas crookies. And though suspects may show bad will, and good cheer seems in short supply, this collection of holiday homicides sparkles.
This mystery collection is a part of the “A Trash ‘n’ Treasures Mystery” series.
Death of a Neighborhood Scrooge by Laura Levine
Scotty Parker is a former child star who once played Tiny Tim, but now he's grown up into the role of neighborhood Scrooge. He cuts the wires on his neighbors' Christmas lights and tells local kids that Santa had a stroke. Convinced he can stage a comeback with his screenplay (The Return of Tiny Tim: Vengeance Is Mine!), freelance writer Jaine Austen has reluctantly been helping him edit it. So when Scotty is bludgeoned with a frozen chocolate yule log and the police start making a list of suspects and checking it twice, Jaine is forced to prove her innocence.
This is the 16th volume in the “A Jaine Austen Mystery” series.
Jane and the Twelve Days of Christmas by Stephanie Barron
Jane Austen has been invited to spend the holiday with family and friends at the home of a prominently wealthy family. While Jane and her circle have a lot to celebrate, their holiday cheer quickly evaporates upon one of the Yuletide revelers dying in a tragic accident. Immediately viewing this with suspicion, Jane attempts to discover the truth because, if the accident was in fact murder, the killer is one of Jane's fellow snowbound guests.
This is the 12th volume in the “Jane Austen Mysteries” series.

While looking for the original thread (via the #SavingFace hashtag on Twitter) of my piece about 'Saving Face', I found this.
I"m not sure if I saw Michelle's reply first....or the new tweet Alex Finch (the editor of Comedy To Watch) published.
You see....I had noticed shortly after the original tweet was published that it didn't make it to the main feed of the publication. The main culprit was it started with a user handle (mine!), and I've since learned that the way around it would be to put a full stop right before the username.
(I actually thought that technique was to avoid the tweet showing up in that user's mention.)
So...I made a note to ask Alex if he would be open to retweet it. Unfortunately...it took more than two months for me to actually flag it. Of course it helps if I receive detailed feedback of what I've written (this one was the longest essay so far with over 4500 words), but I've since learned that it is my job to just put things out there. If there is feedback, great! I'll pivot for next time. If there's none...it's okay too.
I thought I'd let things stew here...and...then decide how I'm going to reply. Likely as short as possible...as I've already started a couple of threads about the film. Something significantly longer would only happen if I find myself in a discussion with Alice, Michelle, or Lynn. Yes, conversational consent...indeed.
Reading Michelle's reply also made me wonder about her comment during an interview when she's reminded that 'Saving Face' is still getting discovered by new viewers. I know there's quite a challenge when those who appreciate your work go for older releases rather than newer ones. Which might come across as not being open to an artist's newer works.
Take me for example: If you asked me to recommend a Romantic Comedy I will likely say 'Enough Said' (along with 'Saving Face' of course!). Ask me to recommend a Julia Louis-Dreyfus title and I'll still give you the same thing. I've already accepted that her project choices would mostly not be a fit for me. Would that stop me from watching one in a week or two...that I haven't seen yet? Not likely.
I think the reason I'm itching to be able to recommend another Michelle Krusiec performance is an underdog thing. In one of the Q&A's for the film, Alice mentioned that she believed that both Lynn and Michelle aren't getting the kind of opportunities based on the performances they were able to turn in while doing the film. I'm probably not cheering as much for Lynn as much as Michelle because Lynn has admitted in an episode of 'They Call Us Bruce' that directing is her next direction after the release of 'I Will Make You Mine'. So, I'm just slightly at a loss on how to help...aside from highlighting what I liked.
After watching 'Saving Face'...I went through Michelle's filmography and one caught my eye: Anna Chue in (Season 2 Episode 5 - 'Bring the Pain') Grey's Anatomy. Season 2 was within the time (was it until Season 5?) that I found the show quite compelling...and did remember those scenes from that episode. This was proof that she could 'bring it' with the likes of Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey.
PS: Find Michelle's reply here.

Dreadful Company by Vivian Shaw *Spoilers*
I've had a hell of a time writing this, through no fault of the book.
Work blows big.
Anyway.
Dreadful Companyfinds Greta and Ruthven in Paris. Greta is there for a medical conference and Ruthven is there to make sure she has fun.
Weird things are happening in the city of lights. It becomes apprent to Greta when she starts finding monsters (supernatural animals) in her hotel room. First is a Well Monster. Routinely summoned way back when keeping treasure hidden in wells was the best way to avoid theft and interest rates, they are toad-like creatures who protect anything shiny
The next was an hair monster, which in the description, sounds a bit like the footstool from beauty and the beast, but with long hair like a Shih Tzu. They are bred as pets, but can also be summoned magically.
Greta feels that finding monsters in her room is odd so she plans on telling Paris's equivalent of Ruthven, a werewolf named St. Germain.
Before she can, she is kidnapped and taken to the catacombs under the city.
There is a coven of vampires who is lead by a guy named Corvin. Corvin crossed Ruthven in the 1990's. He and his coven at the time were going around London, making far too much of a show of themselves, thinking they were superior to humans.
Ruthven, when it became evident that this guy was too stupid to understand that acting like a low class Lestat was going to get them all killed, cleaned his clock and told him to get out of his city.
Corvin has been nursing a grudge since then and when he saw Ruthven and Greta at the opera, he decided he was going to get back at him.
So, he has is second in command Grisaille, kidnapped her and throw her in a dungeon. What the next phase of his plan is, is less clear.
Grisaille is an interesting character, and one that I quickly came to love. He's probably about 200 years old and describes himself as a great second in command, as long as he is following a good leader, which, of course he knows Corvin is not.
He's got a decent streak that he tries to play down, honestly, he has something like imposter syndrome. It is hinted that he was involved with Viktor Frankenstein and the creation of his monster, and that he has never gotten over the guilt. To that end, making any sort of decision terrifies him, hence his role as a lieutenant.
Of course when push comes to shove, he does the right thing.
That's something I really love about these books. Vampires aren't seen as cursed beings doomed to be bad. Outside of Varney's trips into self loathing which get less frequent as time goes on, there's not a lot of brooding on a cursed existence. Just like anyone else, what a vampire makes of their life is up to them, as long g as they don't decide to grow garlic in the land of the midnight sun.
Ruthven, before the kidnapping was called away from Paris, so wasn't there to notice that Greta seems to have disappeared. Varney, however was supposed to meet her at the airport, when she returned to London. When she didn't show, he raises the alarm
Thus our two vampires connect with the werewolf of Paris and set out to find Greta.
This element of the story is frustrating to me. I kind of hate it when the reader knows everything that the characters need to know.
It has always made me wish that I could jump into the book like the kids from Mary Poppins and give them directions.
While Varney, Ruthven and St. Germain try to figure out where to start, other beings are sensing what Greta was suspecting, when the monsters appeared.
Shit's going slightly sideways.
The first to notice are a pair of Psychopomps (beings that help souls cross to the other side ) they keep seeing a lot of weird ghost activity and along with that some very odd things happening with time and such. Plus the ghosts in the Paris cemetery say somethings off
This is related too, but also sort of running parallel with Greta's story, the two don't really cross until close to the end.
I love the psychopomps, and want a series following them as they go around the world helping souls crossover. They are much less depressing about it than Odd Thomas, or the kid from The Sixth Sense.
I have also headcannoed the psychopomps as being in a QPP as well as business partners. Just a vibe I got.
All three books are also amazing with relationships. No one puts out the romance above friends feeling, and all of the main romantic relationships, it is clear that the people like each other, and the relationships are diverse, and believable. In short, they don't take over the story *and* they didn't make me roll my eyes. Very cool!
This book perfectly balances handling the set up from the first book, while setting up what will be the driving force in the next book., and having a strong plot of its own.

What other Servants would you want to see in GO?
In terms of Servants/Figures already in the Fate-Verse:
Agravain, Berserker Li Shuwen, Archemeaies, Richard I, Zuizan Takechi, Gaheris, Kay, Yoshida Shouin, Kondo Isami
In terms of Unlikely But Fate Likes Their OCs (Pseuds)
Kairi Sisigou, Paxti, Siduri, Romani (not Solomon, just Romani)
In terms of Historical/Mythological Figures no matter how iffy:
Ching Shih, Wayland the Smith, Hypatia, Chariclo, Roxanna/Roxanne, Astyanax, Yochi, Melion— there’s a few more but these are the most off the top of my head
In terms of Characters That Exist But I Would Like A “True” Version of Them Due to PHH/LB or Bad Renditions:
Vincent Van Gogh (who is 95% Van Gogh this time), Viviane (the version who isn’t Morgan considering the implications of Morgan Seducing Lancelot in actual myth), Benkei (I am lost and confused despite it being laid out plain to me) PHH Qin Shi Huang (he is very sexy)

Meet Tiera Guinn Fletcher: It didn’t take long for Tiera to figure out what she wanted to do when she “grew up.” At age 11, the science-lover knew she wanted to be an aerospace engineer. According to Tiera, her parents played a vital role in this early affirmation as her mother, an accountant, introduced her to numbers and her father, a construction worker, familiarized Tiera with design. The space enthusiast went on to study science in aerospace engineering at Massachusetts Institution of Technology where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in 2017. The M.I.T. alum then landed herself an internship at Boeing where she supported design & analysis efforts for the Space Launch System -- the rocket @nasa plans to send to Mars. Tiera is now working as a Structural Analysis Engineer at Boeing and acting as an advocate for women interested in pursuing STEM careers.

E dá-lhe agulhadas e latidos.
