Cao Guangyan’s Monthly Report Letter for Pu Yiyong
-----
Yiyong, it’s me your number one friend and here’s your monthly report.
Your Ma's doing well, she's a strong woman. But of course sometimes she seems sad, we often tell her "it'll be alright" even though those words are pointless. I'm trying my best to be there for her, so don't you worry. She's not alone, my Ba & Chuying jie are her drinking buddies now.
Talking about Chuying jie, she’s getting busier. She's working on new cases, ‘real’ human cases fortunately. We still meet often, talk about our daily lives and you. We always talk about you.
My Ba's drinking bar is really popular now. Grandma next door is still his frequent costumer. She's way older than us and healthier than you. Boo you suck Pu Yiyong.
Enough talking about others! I just started working as an intern at the hospital this year. I'm busy, so maybe when you wake up we won't be able to see each other as often as before. But I'll always spare my time for you and you'll always find a way to annoy me right?
I'm not gonna lie though, working is killing me. No one is waiting for me at the bus stop anymore. Well sometimes Chuying jie picks me up but that's different. She's not you. I want you to pick me up, after all you have a lot of free time.
Anyway, I'm having trouble falling asleep. I can still feel your blood on my hands and I have to physically force myself to leave my bed every day.
During boring hours of my internship, memories of our meaningless fight and the thoughts of seeing you when I get home are what keeping me afloat. Also It's silly, when I'm on my break I sometimes visit your manhua web page, hoping that a new chapter will magically appear.
Walking home, my body keep dragging me to yours. I hate opening your bedroom door and seeing you lying there.
Your house no longer feels warm. Maybe because you aren't awake to fill the house with your stupid actions. Strangely, I still spend my time in your room. I've read almost all of your comics, they're great but I still like your work the most. I sometimes fall asleep on the floor of your room, too lazy to go home and my bed feels cold without you curled up next to me.
I know your Ma's sick of seeing me in your room. Believe me, I'm sick of it too. When is it your turn to curl up in my room? FYI, my window is open in case you want to sneak in like you used to.
Ah shit, it's getting late. I have to wake up early tomorrow.
You'll probably get bored reading all this huh? Anyway, the point of this letter is, when will you wake up??
Chuying jie is getting bored of dealing with humans, there are so many ghosts we have to help. Oh and, Director Fang wants his cup back.
Ma's also having a hard time cutting your hair with you lying in bed.
And I miss seeing your name pop up on my phone. I miss being surprised to see you suddenly appear in my room.
A-yi, I’ll buy you delicious foods, so promise me you'll wake up soon okay?

Tried delaying as much as I could to watch the final episode of Oh No! Here Comes Trouble Ep 12
"You used to scold me when I was little that the handwriting I wrote was just 'copying' and not written from my heart but now I know that it is fun to write these characters wholeheartedly"
Pu Yiyong’s joy comes from his acts of kindness 😭 😭
Probably my fav fictional mother since Gong Hyo Jin’s Oh Dongbaek in When the Camilia Blooms. Cheryl Yang plays her so well! 😘
Derek Chang showed up last minute with the cutest face and the sweetest smile but 'his' smile was only as sweet as his dessert
Pu Yiyong calling Ghost Granny a hooligan 😂 😂 😂
When your past random act of kindness towards a nameless god born out of and trapped in human desperation makes it come back cuz even said god misses you and wants you to wake up from your ‘sleep’ :’)
😭 😭
Everyone’s acting here but esp, Peng Cian You was so good. The way he slipped down the still escalator, came scrambling and tried to give him CPR, cried out Yiyong’s name and then brought his face shakily close to unconscious Yiyong hoping, scared that he won’t hear him again.
And, lastly,
This entire scene but this line is the thesis of Oh No! Here Comes Trouble.
This series makes you cry but in a very cathartic way; it's not pain for pain's sake. It is pain with the realisation of "it's okay, it gets better."
It was amazing watching Tseng Jing Hua play Pu Yiyong
If you haven’t watched this do give a try, this beautiful funny sad series on Pu Yiyong, his grief, his search for his father’s soul, his search for who he can be after two years of his life is robbed from him at a critical time in a devastating incident and about his friends and mum who become his pillars of strength and all the lost souls each of whom have a meaningful story to share

Oh No! Here Comes Trouble

TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Oh No! Here Comes Trouble (2023, Taiwan)
Director, Writer & Creator: Lin Kuan Hui
Mini-review:
I don't know why I put off watching this for so long, cause it's really good. It includes so much stuff that I love: laugh-out-loud comedy, heartbreaking stories, supernatural elements and, most of all, a bunch of characters that burrow their way into your heart. The dynamic they share, specially between Yiyong and Guangyan, is incredibly fun. I feel like I could spend hours and hours watching them doing whatever together. And that's exactly what puts this drama miles ahead of other similarly supernatural-themed stories: the character writing is so damn good that you don't even care about the show's flaws, like the weak CGI. It certainly helps that the entire cast does a fantastic job, with Tseng Jing Hua giving a particularly unforgettable perfomance as the main character. Oh No! Here Comes Trouble is exactly what I needed right now, and I hope we get to see these characters again in the future.

Four Treasures of the Study · 文房四宝
蒲一永 Pu Yi Yong · The Brush
Eight Principles of Yong. Traditionally, it was believed that practicing the eight common strokes in regular script, all of which can be found in the character "Yong," could lead to writing all characters well. According to legend, it was created by Wang Xizhi in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, "Yong" is also the first character in his famous work 蘭亭集序 Lantingji Xu (Preface to the Poems Collected from the Orchid Pavilion). The surname "Pu" could potentially be a homage to the famous Chinese writer Pu Songling in the Qing Dynasty. In his most popular work 聊齋誌異 Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio), the focus of the tales are on the emotional entanglements between humans and supernatural beings in the world.
陳楮英 Chen Chu Ying · The Paper
Chu, which refers to the paper mulberry plant, was historically used in ancient China as the raw material for making mulberry paper and Xuan paper. Additionally, "Chu" was used as a term synonymous with paper in ancient times. In EP4, Chuying mentioned that the "chu" in her name means paper.
曹光硯 Cao Guang Yan · The Inkstone
Yan, also known as Yantai, is the name of the inkstone used in calligraphy. The inkstone is used to grind the ink stick into powder, which is then mixed with water on the inkstone to create ink suitable for calligraphy.
執念 The Obsessions · The Ink
The obsessions are one of the ever-changing elements in the show, the elegiac couplets are uniquely written with whole heart and mind for the different obsessions.

Drama Review: Oh No! Here Comes Trouble (不良執念清除師)

Source: Google Images
Pu Yi Yong is a typical high school student. When he unexpectedly gains superpowers after waking up from a car accident, his previously uneventful life is suddenly not so ordinary anymore.

I've Missed Loving Taiwan Dramas
Not gonna lie, I watched Oh No! Here Comes Trouble for the two main male leads, that 'it's not BL but the bromance is strong' bit. I began the drama right as the final episode dropped and I really did not have high hopes for it (I haven't had high hopes in Taiwan dramas in recent years). As I literally picked this drama up only for the reason I mentioned earlier, I had no idea what I was getting into. Yes, I knew it had supernatural elements but that was all.
So imagine my delighted surprise when I was placed on one of the most emotional roller coaster ride throughout all 12 episodes of Oh No! Here Comes Trouble. I can be creeped out one second and laughing at the next second. Or, I could be laughing and tearing up sadly at the same time. Dramas that can bring me on such a wild emotional journey have a very special place in my heart, they automatically become better in my eyes because the mood/energy/vibe is not stagnant.
It isn't just the writing that wowed me. I have watched plenty of dramas or TV shows with similar concept like portraying sub-stories as the plot-catalyst for the show as a whole. The stories in Oh No! Here Comes Trouble are not earth-shattering nor gut wrenching or the best lessons one will learn. They touch on obsession and very often, the media does not focus on this side of obsession so despite the simplicity, the stories were beautifully crafted and executed.
Of course, I cannot write this review and not talk about the acting. We all know Tseng Jing Hua and Vivian Sung's (though she has only taken very average roles for now) acting is top tier so I am not going to go on about them. As a matter of fact, the entire cast consisted of familiar veteran faces, obviously the acting would be good. It was Peng Cian You that really pulled me into the drama. All three main leads perfectly portrayed their characters but because I did not know Peng initially, his performance stunned me so much especially during the CPR scene – that was not an actor playing the role of Cao Guang Yan, it was Guang Yan embodying Peng completely.
I grew up watching Taiwan dramas and for years now, I haven't had hope for them at all. Sure, I still give some a chance but I was always disappointed. Watching Oh No! Here Comes Trouble gives me hope for future Taiwan dramas but I'm a realist so I know one show will not save the whole country's industry. It's just, if you know how Taiwan drama humour was like 15 to 20 years ago, you will be able to see it in this drama. Oh No! Here Comes Trouble is not exactly nostalgic but it can bring on a new wave and I am here for it.
P.S.: Season 2 when?
Rating: ★★★★★

Oh No! Here Comes Trouble ep 12
Completely satisfied with this show and definitely expect to watch it again.
Okay, spoilers for the series follow so don't read if you haven't watched the whole thing.
The good
Script, story, characters, acting, comedy, direction, cinematography. Basically everything.
Unclear/didn't understand
I didn't get the bit with the security guard and his accuser. I thought it was setting up another obsession but it just happened, then they went back to it with a repeat of the action. Will rewatch to see if I missed something (was interrupted several times (grumble) so this very well could just be me).
Could've been better
CGI was pretty good in general though the closeup paper bits landing were a little, oh, procedural vs. natural. The big plane crash (the full scene) wasn't quite as convincing as I would have liked but I get that budget isn't infinite and this kind of work is expensive. (Heck, big budget movies often have less convincing CGI than this series.)
Subtitles often were a bit fleeting (the English ones) especially when there was a short line. Dear subtitle team: love your work but please remember that we are switching between watching the action and reading so we have to spend time on both; it's not the same as listening to dialog and watching simultaneously. I had to rewind quite a few times because I wasnn't sure what had been said because I took my eyes off the titles for a moment and missed something.
Things I loved
The writing was terrific. Not one of the obsessions played out like you might have expected. Twists every time!
Every. single. one. of the actors were good. Every one of the minor roles was done well. The actor playing the OLD WOMAN was brilliant, made more effective by a great costume, hair, the smoking (lighting a wet butt was a genius touch). Traffic boulder man was perfectly menacing.
Guang Yan's reaction to being pulled away from Yi Yong by Li Song was devastating and perfect; Cian You nailed it.
The scene where Yi Yong and Bao Sheng are talking in the hospital after Yi Yong wakes up was economically written and acted. Scenes like this are often overloaded with exposition or overdone by the actors/directors. They didn't even say that Ren Xiu had died; the acting did it all. Cheryl Yang seemed effortless in all her parts, whether doing comedy or badassery.
Another example of beautiful spareness in writing and directing was when Yi Yong went to the (graveyard? mausoleum?). We don't know where he's going in the taxi, the taxi driver just gets out (sensitive!) and Yi Yong's sobbing is perhaps all the more heartbreaking because it was shot from outside the taxi.
The first balcony scene with Ren Xiu and Yi Yong was another example of terrific writing. We got introduced to Ren Xiu's character and the real nature of his relationship with his son in such a short time, yet you learned enough to care about him. The second balcony scene was beautifully acted by both men, and the necessary tonal shifts were slow and delicate enough to keep the viewer in the moment.
Loved the ending. Wake up, hear yet another plea for help, roll eyes, roll credits. That said, Yi Yong losing another couple of years to a coma? UNFAIR.
Side notes
Jing Hua actually spent time to learn calligraphy in more depth. I assume (as someone who doesn't read it) that he had to be convincing enough to make Chinese viewers believe in his expertise. Role reversal: in one of the behind the scenes videos, Cian You gives Jing Hua a cartoon of him that he said that he had drawn.
Conclusion: 🎖️ Absolutely recommended. Run, do not walk to your preferred IQIYI access.
Going to re-watch and think about this some more.
