Edinburgh, Scotland. In support of the people of Catalonia and against the repression from Spain. First of October, 2017.
As a person born and raised in Mallorca, i never felt I was Spanish. Both my mom and dad speak Catalan, so Spanish was my second language. And I never felt any kind of “patriotic feeling” of any kind (I honestly believe that frontiers only divide people, and that everyone should be able to travel, live, study and work wherever they like).
These last month, though, I felt another feeling towards “my” country. One that wasn’t new, but that last month (and yesterday) was specially stronger. And you can tell from my previous posts.
I FELT ASHAMED
Catalonia is a region in the north-eastern coast of Spain. It was part of the Kingdom of Aragó, and (probably) it’s central region. For the last 300 years or so, though, Catalonia has suffered the repression of Spain, from abolishing its sovereignty and trying to kill its language with the Nova Planta decrees, to the special repression to Catalan culture under the fascist regime of Franco.
Due to all of this (and economical reasons, because there are ALWAYS economical reasons…), the people from Catalonia havd been advocating for its independence from the rest of the Kingdom of Spain for the last 20 years or more. Despite that, the answer from the Spanish government has always been a NO.
Therefore, during the last Sunday the First of October, Catalonia held a referendum to see if its people actually wanted to be independent from the Kingdom of Spain. Nevertheless, the Spanish government declared said referendum illegal, because it was against the “Unity of Spain”.
While I truly think that Catalan politicians want nothing more than their personal gain, that’s not the question here. The people had spoken, and that’s beyond any petty law that the government of the Kingdom of Spain can make. It wasn’t (and it isn’t) about independence, not anymore. It was about human rights. About decency, democracy, and freedom. About what’s right, and what’s wrong.
Nonetheless, the answer from Spain has been seen all over the world. The National Police and the Civil Guard (paramilitary force), armed with batons, and in full riot gear, marching against people. Attacking them. Brutalising them. Over 800 people were hurt. A man had a heart attack, but this didn’t stop the police from attacking the ones that were trying to resuscitate him. A woman had her fingers broken one by one. Charges against people sitting on the ground, or singing with their hands on the air.
All in the name of “democracy”.
After that, members of the government (Popular Party) and an opposition party (Citizen’s) said that the police had done a magnificent work, “only against ballot boxes and not against people”, that there wasn’t anybody hurt, that the police actions were “proportional”.
The president of the Kingdom of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, said that Spain has been an example.
Yes. It has been an example. Of oppression, of repression, of brutally, of fascism.
An example of what happens when you let the fascists win and rule over 70 years.
An example of what the world shouldn’t be. An example of what, unfortunately, is becoming.
This is why I wanted to leave Spain. This is why I’m now in Scotland, where they have more sympathy for Catalonia than they have in the Moncloa, and I have no intention of never coming back, while the heirs of a fascist dictatorship are still in power.
ASHAMED AND SICK OF BEING SPANISH NO EN EL MEU NOM!

Catalunya deserves better
There’s this writing on the wall, in my city, Milan, that always impressed me. “Every country deserves the regime that bears”. That’s it. Today Catalunya fought for something that can’t bear. Catalunya deserves better.

Força Catalunya
The Spanish government has sent police forces to Catalonia to prevent a referendum from happening. People who just wanted to vote are being beaten up, an 80-year-old woman was struck in the head and they wouldn't even let her get an ambulance, a six-year-old boy will never walk again because they grabbed him and threw him to the ground dislocating his neck. They broke a woman's hand when she was protecting the elderly, they are firing illegal ammo against people. Their orders were to retrieve the votes. If you still think Spain is a democratic countries, think again. They're calling the referendum a coup while it's them who have wounded nearly 500 people, cut off internet and so much more. I might have been born and raised in Spain, but I'm not Spanish, this country doesn't represent me. Today and always, visca Catalunya.
