I liked the way Rick used Calypso in PJO to give Percy this whole moral dilemma about the gods, but I really don’t like what Rick did to her character in HOO and TOA. She only came back because Leo “needed” a girlfriend, and when she finally got the time to try and discover herself, she comes off as abusive towards Leo, and so a lot of Leo fans don’t really like her.

I agree with virtualflower, I think Calypso and Leo’s relationship would’ve worked better as a friendship (especially since I headcannon Leo as someone on the aromantic spectrum). It would’ve made a much more compelling story in my opinion if Leo and Calypso had just been friends and he’d gone back for her because it was the right thing to do and because she was his friend. In TOA it kinda feels like Calypso feels stuck with Leo out of obligation because he rescued her, and if they had just been friends I feel like there wouldn’t have been so much tension between them. Or if they started off as a romantic couple but then realized it wasn’t working out and talked about it and realized that they just weren’t going to work out as a couple and that was okay and stayed friends. I feel like that could’ve been really interesting to explore in the Dark Prophecy, but instead we got what just felt like a forced romantic relationship because Rick just wanted to solve Leo’s loneliness from being surrounded by couples all the time.

I personally think it would’ve been a much more compelling story if Leo slowly realized that he didn’t need romantic validation and he was happy just the way he was, with his friends and his dragon.

Reading HOO, I really related to Leo, his genius that it felt like everyone forgot sometimes, the way he felt inadequate because all his friends were in romantic relationships and he wasn’t, hiding his true feelings through doing his best for everyone around him, being the jokester to hide the pain, and flirting to hide his insecurities. I was really disappointed with the whole Calypso storyline because I felt Rick was just trying to shove this relationship on Leo to fix all his problems. I didn’t know it at the time, but I’m aromantic and asexual, and the reason I related to Leo so much was because I felt like he was aromantic.

Y’all get mad at Rachel for cockblocking Percabeth, but you should really be mad at Calypso.

Rachel is actually an interesting character, with an arc that separated herself from Percy and she actually got to be her own person.

Calypso was written as an obstacle to keep the will-they-won’t-they going so that Rick could sell another book. She is there for one chapter, and doesn’t really do much for Percy’s arc except to give Annabeth a reason to be pissed at him.

She was then brought back in HoH because Leo “needed” a girlfriend. She served no other purpose.

Something something female characters being written by men that only exist to enhance the arc of the male protagonist something something.
