Virtual Field Trips: Using VR to take Students on Educational Adventures
Virtual field trips (VFTs) are becoming increasingly popular as a way to take students on educational adventures without leaving the classroom. Using virtual reality (VR) technology, VFTs allow students to experience places and events that may be too difficult or expensive to access in real life, such as historical landmarks, scientific phenomena, or even outer space.
Some benefits of VFTs include:
1. Access to remote locations: With VFTs, students can virtually travel to places that may be difficult or impossible to reach in person, such as the depths of the ocean, the surface of Mars, or the inside of a human cell.
2. Cost-effective: VFTs can be more cost-effective than traditional field trips, as they eliminate the need for transportation, admission fees, and other associated costs.
3. Increased engagement: VFTs can be more engaging and immersive than traditional classroom learning, as students can actively explore and interact with the virtual environment.
4. Customizable and flexible: VFTs can be customized to meet the needs of individual students or classes, and can be accessed at any time, allowing for greater flexibility in scheduling.
Some examples of VFTs include:
1. Google Expeditions: A free app that allows teachers to lead students on virtual tours of over 1000 locations, including landmarks, museums, and historical sites.
2. Nearpod VR: An interactive platform that allows teachers to create custom virtual field trips that integrate with their lesson plans.
3. Minecraft: Education Edition: A game-based learning platform that includes educational content and virtual field trips that can be accessed by students.
4. National Geographic Explore VR: A virtual reality app that allows students to explore the world and its wildlife in 360-degree immersive experiences.
Overall, virtual field trips offer a unique and engaging way to enhance student learning and provide access to new and exciting educational opportunities.

Take a virtual field trip to Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary!
In celebration of Kids to Parks Day, join staff from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on a virtual outdoor adventure from Ventura Harbor in California across the Santa Barbara Channel in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary to Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands. The channel crossing will be full of marine life experiences, such as humpback whales breaching, common dolphins surfing the wake of the Island Packers vessel, and sea lions darting in and out of kelp forests.

As the year rolled on the sense of being trapped indoors was still my main experience. Volume 5 of the Book of Days opens with two drawings of my favourite place I’ve ever been -which was San Francisco. A lifetime ago I had finished paying my student loan off and because I was used to paying out an amount each month instead of having more money I opened a savings account. The payments built up over a few years toward the deposit on a flat and was working full time so it was possible. I suddenly had a change of heart and realised that with the savings I could afford to take my amazing and wonderful mum on holiday. She was a proper old school socialist hippy who believed in peace and love and equality right through to her core. (So much so that I’m all my life I never met anyone who knew her who didn’t love her). She had done without for us all her life and never expected or asked for anything else so when we organised a surprise trip she was blown away. Scott McKenzie “If You’re Going to San Francisco” had been her favourite song so it could only be one place. It was the happiest week of my life wandering little cafes and hippy places in the sun and the best decision I ever made (because none of us knew how little time she had left before she got ill and we lost her just a few years later). I’ve missed her every year since and when #liverpoolindependentartschool started our virtual field trips on Zoom during lockdown I had a hankering to wander San Francisco again. The first is Union Square and the Second Haight Street. The next drawing, back in the physical world is a view from Saint Luke’s with the outdoor drinking tables, where it felt safe enough to sit out doors and have a pint with Antoinette. That was very welcome though the weather wasn’t great but was the only time that year I’d actually gone out for a pint. The last is sitting on a bench in the empty precincts of the Uni that were like an empty film set, drawing on the way back from food shopping. #dontknowwhatyougottillitsgone #lockdown2020 #observationaldrawing #virtualfieldtrip #sanfrancisco #unionsquare #haightashbury #sketchbook #sketchbookdrawing #isolation #missingmum #happierdays (at San Francisco, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cascg_FMKq2/?utm_medium=tumblr

Interning at the DC Collaborative
I am Njoud, the Winter 2020-2021 Community Partnerships Intern at the DC Collaborative. I assisted with community memberships and the data work of the Collective Impact project. My experience with interning at the Collaborative has been wonderful because of the staff, my expansion of knowledge in the Arts Education data field, and having the opportunity to speak with the organization’s career coach Simone Blanchard, whose guidance helped me set up new goals.
While working under the Community Partnerships Manager, my tasks were mainly focused on the Any Given Child DC Collective Impact work, a data mapping project focused on illustrating arts and humanities organizations’ programming in the DC public education system, ensuring that our community is operating with equity. I was responsible for data collection, member tracking, focus group administration, and focus group meeting notes. In addition to my contribution towards the Collective Impact project, I helped with updating the Collaborative’s Distance Learning Resource Database, facilitating virtual field trips, and assisting with membership tracking.
As an intern at the Collaborative, I learned that managing data can be time consuming, but the end result can be very rewarding because of the organization’s mission. In my opinion, this experience was one of the best because it is important to me that the staff works collectively as a group and supports each other along the way. I also appreciate the coaching session as it helped me shape my current and future goals working in the Arts.

I took a break from plucking feathers to visit with the pigs. The plucker is great but it leaves a few feathers here and there, that’s when my plucking abilities are needed. That should give you a hint about the big job going on right now, involving large fowl and a special meal to be served Thursday! Enough said, right? The pigs enjoyed my company. Nearly took a bite of my phone! 😂 #pigsofinstagram #pigs #pigstagram #swine #farm #farmlife #rural_love #rural #pigtales #homeschool #homeschooling #virtualclasses #virtualfieldtrip #virtualfarmvisit #animals #virtuallearning #homestead #homesteading #farmstead #lowcountry #beaufortcounty (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CH8SXo8B4aV/?igshid=67k1kmbokiiq

Over this period I was beginning to feel very trapped and could notice others feeling the same. We had come up with an offer for the Patreon for #liverpoolindependentartschool where our plan was to use a combination of Zoom meeting screen share and Google Earth online street atlas to take virtual field trips. I was learning Zoom on the hoof - (as were most people in the world) and wanted to do prep drawings first. The idea was that we would send our the zoom link to our patrons, share tips about urban sketching, share screen Google Earth and wander around a city or rural area of our choosing and explore to find the best view; then leave them to draw and meet back up for a second Zoom to review their drawings and offer feedback. The nature of these books was supposed to be to make a record of observational drawings from physical objects to map the year -but with 2020 being the shitshow that it turned out to be that proved more challenging than I could have predicted. Being locked in and devoid of new stimulus meant I was running out of things to draw (and certain things like the self portrait, Kev, Jess and the balcony view got drawn again and again). The effect in my mood of lockdown also severely reduced my desire to draw even if there were more things around still to record. This then, as record of our virtual urban sketching days although drawn from an onscreen digital resource was still a real record of my experience of the year and partially fulfilled my yearning to wander - (even if that felt slightly hollow). Here then are a Bath Georgian Terrace with digital navigation arrows, a Bath Street corner, two from beautiful Venice and one from the ruins of Herculaneum - (who’s inhabitants had experienced a more permanent and deadly lockdown.) #normallife #observationaldrawing #lockdown2020 #dontknowwhatyougottillitsgone #sketchbook #sketchbookdrawing #urbansketching #bath #venice #herculaneum #vesuvius #nextbestthing #googleearth #fieldtrip #virtualfieldtrip (at Minster Court) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaHs_ShN718/?utm_medium=tumblr

Virtual field trips are the new normal.
Virtual field trips are the new normal. As students are at home for a more extended period than expected, a virtual picnic for the students of pre-primary and grade one was organised in association with #SugarRushOutdoors. Students met all the animals, learnt their names and features. They discussed how they were being taken care of during these uncertain times. They posed many questions like how they are being fed, their daily routines and their friends on the farm. After meeting their farm animals, they danced and sang Nursery rhymes with their school friends. The trainers from #SugarRushOutdoors were surprised to see the enthusiasm in our young students. It was a fun way to meet and watch farm animals virtually!
