Two thoughts I’ve had since finishing HOFAS
Will sjm go on tour for HOFAS? I think it’s weird that we didn’t get a tour edition but also considering how bad the marketing around the book was, I think they might have just given up/whoever was doing the marketing on her previous books left. I know at one stage she was supposed to be in London with Fane (I even saw the listing on their website and had plans to buy tickets even tho I live in Australia) but that got cancelled and has been confirmed with Bloomsbury that it’s not happening.
I just think it’s so odd that we’re not even getting a virtual tour or anything?? Like we even got a livestream for the Barnes and Noble release of HOSAB but not for one of the most anticipated books of the year?? It’s all very disappointing but it gives me a sliver of hope that she might actually go on tour. At this stage tho, I think there’s about a 20% chance she actually will.
This is just a side note but why didn’t we get any preorder incentive?? Because they already had so many preorders?? They would’ve known how many posters they had to make. Honestly it just kinda feels like greed to me but idk
My other thought is a very scary one: we won’t be getting a new sjm book until 2026. Obviously I have no confirmation on this and am just speculating. But I know Bloomsbury has said that no special editions of HOFAS can be made until 2025 and the only reason I can think for them doing that is that there won’t be any new book released next year. If you think about it, we didn’t get any new book last year but we got a bunch of special editions from different companies e.g. Fairyloot, Illumicrate to keep us ‘entertained’ for lack of a better word until the new release. I think the same thing will happen next year, too.
That thought is definitely not a pleasant one and it’s honestly spiking my anxiety like crazy. 😬😬 Also if you’re going to reference that article that said Sarah would be having 7 new books this year maybe just go back and have a little reread. She was contracted for 7 new books on top of what she was already contracted for, not 7 for this year. The article also called Samantha Shannon a ‘new author’ soooooo
BUT please let me know your thoughts! I need someone to pull me off the anxiety ledge that I’m currently sitting on 😭

Mapping Melbourne (Week 14)
When I initially started planning the trip, I struggled to find a good itinerary online. Beyond Queen Victoria Markets and the National Gallery of Victoria, the majority of recommendations were to visit streets and cafes, or activities that you couldn’t quite get the essence of online. Sure, a street is pretty and well-known, but how much time should I allot to visiting it?? I can only buy so many renowned Melbourne coffees. Answers to my questions were few and far between. Needless to say, figuring out the number of days to spend in Melbourne and coinciding adventures was more difficult than I’d like to admit. But, if it’s two things I learned from the trip, it’s that you’ll find adventure if you look for it and always schedule in free time to look for it!
To make matters worse, just before we called an Uber to the airport, we got an email saying our flight was canceled. Jetstar, the cheapest airline to get around Australia, had worked out pretty well for us until that moment, but from what we heard from other travelers, we knew it was just a matter of time before a flight of ours got canceled. We were able to move the flight to the next morning for free, but lost half a day of our trip. Even more inspired to pack our time there, we found out there was a rugby match in melbourne that evening. Melbourne is known for its sports scene as the annual host of the Australian Open, Australian Grand Prix (F1 races), as well as countless cricket, rugby, and Australian football matches in its famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) stadium. I had wanted to watch a rugby match for the longest time, so I was more than excited. The crowd was electric. It was the Melbourne Storm vs the Brisbane Broncos, two of the biggest Australian cities, so tensions were high. I won't get into the details of how rugby is played, but in simple terms, it’s not too different from American football except for the fact that players can only throw the ball backwards (like laterals in football) and they wear virtually no padding or helmets! The two 40-minute halves are also played with no timeouts or ad breaks, so the game doesn’t have the constant (and annoying) pauses which make American football feel never-ending. Needless to say, we were thoroughly entertained.

The next day we got breakfast at one of Melbourne’s most famous cafes and breakfast spots, Seven Seeds, where I enjoyed a pourover coffee with notes of peaches and pineapple as well as an egg dish that still pops up in my dreams.

Breakfast was followed by a walk through the Queen Victoria Markets, a walk along the river, and then a visit to the National Gallery of Victoria. I personally loved the gallery which had a variety of different exhibits ranging from robot dogs walking around a room to walls full of peoples’ confessions. I returned the next day to continue my exploration of the gallery.

On a walking tour around the city, we learned that Melbourne used to be called Batmania after John Batman who claimed to have founded the city in 1835. We also enjoyed the Carlton Gardens, visited and learned about a prison that was converted into a university, and ended with a great view of the city.

As much as I loved Melbourne and it’s unique ability to combine the city feel of Chicago with the cafe and food scene of Paris, the visit reaffirmed my bond with Sydney.

Buffalo are a proto-heavy metal band formed in Sydney, Australia in 1970, although initially performing under the name Head (changed the following year, due to its sexual innuendo and unmarketablity). The original line up was unconventional for a rock band, featuring two lead vocalist (Dave Tice and Alan Milano) and filled out by John Baxter (guitar), Peter Wells (bass) and Paul Balbi (drums), although their difinitive line up (1973-1975) was more conventional with Tice, Baxter and Wells with the addition of Jimmy Economou on drums. Although largely unrecognised within the Australian music scene, they were possibly Australia’s first heavy metal band, pre-dating other pioneering Australian hard rock and heavy metal acts - notably Coloured Balls, AC/DC, The Angels (Australian) and Rose Tattoo, of which Wells was also a founding member. Like many pioneering heavy metal acts, Buffalo incorporated strong influences of blues-rock, psychedelia and progressive rock - the latter genre also frequently used by many critics and fans to label the band’s style. Like most Australian bands at the time, Buffalo’s bread and butter was a constant grind of national touring, running the full gamut from school dances in tiny halls to large outdoor concerts. Overall, the band’s sound is comparable to Black Sabbath, whom they supported during an early ‘70’s tour.Rather more than apocryphal evidence suggests Black Sabbath were none too pleased with the band’s exceptionally loud, energetic performance, nor the crowd’s overly enthusiastic reception and numerous calls for encores. Indeed,one rock magazine featured the headline “Sabbath Blown Offstage” Despite being signed to a major label (Vertigo Records - the first non-European or British act to do so) they would remain an underground band. This was largely due to a lack of airplay on radio, with commercial radio virtually black-listing the band, and the non-existence of public radio stations in Australia such as Triple J and 3RRR until the mid-1970s. Also, their controversial artworks for their albums Volcanic Rock (1973) and Only Want You For Your Body (1974) (regarded as their two masterpieces) also saw some record chains refuse to stock their albums. After 1975, the band underwent various line-up changes and a musical decline on their recorded output, eventually disbanding in 1977. Buffalo has however left a legacy with Australia’s heavy metal, pub rock and alternative rock movements.
