Okay, let's get a little spooky with the early 18th century Wingfield House, Wingfield, Wiltshire, UK. The 4bd, 3ba home underwent significant expansion in the late 19th century when there was a demand for additional entertaining rooms and separate wings for bachelors and children. During WWI, the manor was used as a military hospital. In the 1940s, the property was divided into four separate dwellings. £1.250M / $1.530M
The newer portion of the house was done in Gothic Revival style, while the original is Georgian.
The home is accessed via an enclosed communal courtyard and a Gothic revival doorway. This opens to a double-height entrance hall paved with York flagstones.
The impressive ballroom off the main hall features a timber barrel-vaulted ceiling.
Tudor-arched fireplace has the Caillard family arms (owners that renovated the home after WWI) above the arch, along with a French motto on top of the fireplace. Note the large Inglenook and window openings in the fireplace itself.
39 ft library hall, (and the oldest part of the house), with six floor-to-ceiling oak bookshelves, giving both open and closed storage options.
Drawing room with early Georgian plaster is finished in a vibrant shade of turquoise and has a white marble fireplace dating back to 1760 that came from the Circus building in Bath.
Large kitchen and dining area with cream-painted cabinetry. Wide, stripped timber flooring and an original limestone fireplace create focal points in the room.
Ascending to the first floor via a fine early Georgian staircase with waist-high paneling and a delicate domed skylight above is the remarkable primary bedroom suite set in the corner.
This space was meticulously crafted by the current owners including Gothic-inspired doors and built-in seating in a contemporary oriel window inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
A modern marble shower room cleverly concealed behind double wardrobe doors. That's how ya do it- this is a great idea.
Secondary bedroom adjacent to the primary has a beautiful built-in closet and window seats.
On the floor above is a bedroom under the eaves with thick original beams.
What a magnificent home- look at the architecture. Lovely pond on the property, too.
Horticulturist's delight is a modern greenhouse on the property.
There's a plethora of different plant and tree species on the property, all meticulously maintained.

Hoard of 17th-Century Coins Hidden During English Civil War Found
During a kitchen renovation, a family in England unexpectedly discovered a hoard of coins that was likely buried for safekeeping during the first English Civil War.
A family in England discovered nearly 400-year-old buried treasure during a recent home renovation project. The find includes more than 1,000 gold and silver coins that were likely hidden during the first English Civil War.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/69347362cc3e3de7206ddec9ea43227a/c188825ded0078d1-1e/s540x810/b9f2ee97b8125123c40db3280ecffa2bb2c53a64.jpg)
Betty and Robert Fooks unexpectedly unearthed the 17th-century hoard at their cottage in South Poorton Farm, Dorset, in 2019. Now, these coins have hit the auction block and sold for upward of $75,900 (60,740 British pounds), according to the hammer prices listed by Duke's, an auction house in Dorchester that handled the sales.
Robert Fooks made the discovery while pickaxing the kitchen floor to remove about 2 feet (0.6 meter) of flooring material, including modern concrete, old flagstone and bare earth. Then, he saw a broken glazed-ceramic vessel brimming with coins in the layer of soil dating back about 400 years. It's unclear if the bowl was broken before or during the recent discovery, according to Duke's.
The couple contacted a local finds liaison officer, who arranged for the coins to be sent to the British Museum, where they were cleaned and identified, according to The Guardian. The British Museum noted that the coins were likely deposited on a single occasion between about 1642 and 1644, dates likely based on the coins' mint dates.

The coins in the collection, named the Poorton Coin Hoard, range from modest sixpences, which were worth six pennies, to a coveted gold "unite" coin that was worth 20 shillings, or 1 pound, and depict the visages of English monarchs Edward VI; Mary and her husband Philip; Elizabeth I; James I; and Charles I, who ruled successively from 1547 to 1649.
Many of the coins sold individually or in groups at auction on April 23. A single gold coin of Charles I brought in the highest price, at 5,000 British pounds ($6,260), while some lots went for far more than their estimated value.
The period in which the coins were likely hidden — 1642 to 1644 — coincides with the first English Civil War, which lasted from 1642 to 1646. The three civil wars were fought between supporters of the English monarch, then Charles I, and Parliament, to determine the balance of power between the crown and Parliament.

"Perhaps the most important short-term significance of the Civil Wars was that it culminated in the execution of King Charles I in 1649 and a republic was established for the first time in English history which lasted 11 years," Waseem Ahmed, a doctoral student of history at University College London who specializes in 17th century British political history but was not involved in the hoard's discovery or analysis.
It's no surprise that people hid their money back then, as warfare during this time included the seizure of opponents' property, he said.
"If you were a royalist or suspected royalist, you could have your estates sequestrated (seized) by the Parliamentary side and vice versa," Ahmed explained. This may be the case for the 17th-century homeowner, as Dorset was a hotspot for troop movements and the turbulence that followed.
It's likely that someone buried the Poorton Coin Hoard with the hopes of safeguarding it and retrieving it later. And while the treasure was certainly safeguarded, its retrieval took four centuries longer than its owner likely desired.
"If we hadn't lowered the floor, they would still be hidden there," Betty Fooks told The Guardian. "I presume the person intended to retrieve them but never got the chance."

Big Trouble and the Mythic Underworld
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/21800373fe1f3522123456530c9e07c6/942508bc8b05e24d-d1/s540x810/ba52a3721f107c95837cfa6759d3737d8fad3e36.jpg)
Have you seen the 1986 John Carpenter masterpiece Big Trouble in Little China? ...Because you should.
Briefly, Big Trouble is a fantasy adventure film about a man trying to find his truck.
As you may have seen before on this blog, I'm a big fan of a small family of RPG podcasts, including Keep Off The Borderlands. Currently, this show does a monthly movie call in episode. As you may have guessed, the most recent was about Big Trouble.
This film excels at a lot of things but my favorite is its portrayal of a Mythic Underworld.
Briefly, a Mythic Underworld is a (typically underground) place where reality gets pushed aside. The deeper you go, the more fantastic it gets. IE: a dungeon.
John Carpenter discussing the film on set in a behind-the-scenes interview available to watch on YouTube.
One of most fun bits of this is that it is set in modern-day (1986) San Fransisco, so the introduction of magic and monsters gets wild. We also have the advantage of our audience perspective character, Jack Burton, being an outsider. So he and the audience get to be flabbergasted together when a ghostly sorcerer passes through his big rig.
Some Fun Ideas (d6)
With this in mind, I thought it would be fun to come up with a table of plot hooks that can take us from the ordinary to the fantastic in our RPGs, specifically focused on the modern world and comedy.
Astute readers may recall I did a similar thing with my call in to an earlier Movie Monday podcast episode, and encapsulated that in an article on 1963's The Raven. These kinds of lists are meant to be a reference to the Sword Breaker podcast, which I miss dearly.
d6 modern supernatural story hooks:
Congratulations! You’re the new owner of a historic colonial home. One issue, the flagstones were placed in such a way as to create a door to the spirit realm every equinox. This tends to dramatically reduce market value so it wasn’t disclosed in the sale and your inspector missed it…sorry!
Turns out, one of those early a-bomb tests tore open a rift to the 9th dimension. So that cross country road trip took you from route 66 to between the atomic structure of solid matter. Avoiding the aliens living in there, pretty easy, getting back to our reality…a bit more difficult.
Due to an ancient prophecy the high rise office building you work in is now zoned over a ley line. So you’re gotta have to meet your corporate deadlines while sorcerers from across time battle over the property, but that’s just life in the big city for ya.
Those suburban homeowners associations? Satanists. I know, not really that surprising but in order to fulfill your new neighborhood obligations you will have to seek out Belial, do battle with his 80 demonic legions and/or 50 spirit legions afterward presenting a virginal sacrifice.
Government bureaucracy may seem totally soulless, but that’s because it actually is a giant machine that sorta just tabulates everything. So to renew your license there’s a whole labyrinth of mechanized dead traps to fight through for that to be approved.
The cosmic forces of law and chaos hold a tournament for control of the universe every planetary conjunction. The game itself and the champions representing mortals are determined by one of our competitions which happens to start at the time of the conjunction. All this is to say congrats on your bowling league making the finals, but they’re gonna be a bit different this year.

How Do Houses for Sale in Flagstone Compare to Other Locations?
The real estate market in Australia is constantly evolving, with buyers and investors seeking prime locations that offer the best combination of affordability, amenities, and future growth. But how do they compare to other locations in terms of price, lifestyle, and investment potential?
Affordability and Property Prices
One of the key factors driving interest in houses for sale in Flagstone is affordability. Compared to major metropolitan areas like Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Flagstone offers more competitive pricing for larger land sizes and modern homes. While property values in major cities continue to rise, Flagstone remains an attractive option for first-time buyers and families looking for a more budget-friendly alternative without compromising on quality.
Location and Connectivity
Flagstone is strategically positioned between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, making it an ideal location for those who need access to both economic hubs. The ongoing infrastructure developments, including improved road networks and planned railway extensions, enhance the connectivity of houses for sale in Flagstone to surrounding areas. Lifestyle and Community Amenities
Unlike densely populated urban centers, Flagstone is designed to provide a balance between modern conveniences and natural beauty. The area boasts expansive green spaces, parks, recreational facilities, and shopping precincts. Future developments are set to further enhance the lifestyle appeal of houses for sale in Flagstone, offering residents a high quality of life. In comparison, properties in inner-city locations may have limited outdoor spaces and higher congestion levels, impacting overall livability.
Investment Potential and Future Growth

As a master-planned community, Flagstone is set for significant expansion, with new schools, business hubs, and residential developments on the horizon. This structured growth plan makes Flagstone a promising investment compared to locations with stagnant property values or limited development opportunities.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right property location depends on individual preferences and investment goals. Houses for sale in Flagstone stand out for their affordability, strong community focus, and long-term growth prospects. Whether for homebuyers or investors, Flagstone presents an excellent alternative to pricier city properties while still offering a high standard of living. As the area continues to develop, it is likely to become an even more attractive destination in the Australian property market.

LOCATION: Upper Marlboro, Md. COMPANY: McHale Landscape Design When the property next to this client’s home came up for sale, they purchased it and contracted McHale Landscape Design to install a garden, greenhouse and more. The project is a fully operational, fruit and vegetable-producing outdoor living space constructed in a residential space. McHale Landscape Design installed terraced garden beds, gates, fences and the entrance to the property. The contractor constructed the fences and gates, made from solid cedar, on-site with built-in light and a metal cap to provide long-term durability. Among the difficulties crews faced was a sharp grade that sloped down toward the “she-shed.” To combat this, McHale crews installed river rock to help guide runoff away from the shed. Other stone used in the project include flagstone, which the contractor chose to create consistent width on the joints. In addition to the design and installation, McHale crews provide maintenance for this residential property. McHale Landscape Design won a silver award from the National Association of Landscape Professionals’ Awards of Excellence program for this project. Welcome to the Temple of the Living Goddess. Isn't it interesting how lately, there've been a rash of "cult-y" places for sale? The 1995 hacienda style home in Santa Fe, New Mexico has 9bds, 6ba, and is $1.95M. This property has been on the market for over 2 years.
Outer doors open to a long hall. (Does the dog convey?)
And, then you walk down to these arched stained glass doors with a heart. As you can see, "Temple of the Living Goddess" is written in gold over the arch.
I would feel uneasy here. This actually looks like a church. The description says that there's a "retreat building," so I'm guessing that this is it.
Not sure what this large space is.
There are 3 treatment rooms, so maybe this is one of them. I don't know what they're treating.
And, this is clearly a kitchen. A very Zen kitchen- it's so serene.
This is the hacienda style residence.
The living room has tree trunk beams and a nice Pueblo style fireplace. I like the built-in shelving, too.
The kitchen is nice- love the tiles.
So many large homes have these bunker rooms.
One of the baths is large and has beautiful tile.
There are 3.47 acres of land with fruit trees and flagstone paths to walk. There's also a 3 bedroom casita.
The property is zoned for several permitted uses including a potential B and B, family compound, religious facility or retreat center. Several other conditional or accessory uses are available with approval of the County of Santa Fe.
