Virtual Strangers - review (AD)
I was kindly given an advanced electronic copy of Virtual Strangers by Sam Canning in exchange for an honest review*. Virtual Strangers book blurb Do you believe in love at first type? When Ada set up her own PR firm from a coffee shop, she didn’t expect to meet journalist Fraser. Also working there daily, he soon becomes a friend. Reporting on interesting things to do around Edinburgh, Fraser…

yes all the themes of all of us strangers but also "if you could hear me crying why didn't you come into my room" and "how come no one found me" coexisting and not in the way we think, like the way adam is implying that he would have done better, he would not have ignored the cries for help and actually done something, but in reality when it came to harry crying for help it barely even registered not because he didn't want to help but because he was too stuck in his own private bubble of pain to notice harry's

Feels like there needs to be more fics where Corroded Coffin is successful but not fucking. Rockstar levels successful. Successful as in they're well known within their niche and not at all outside of it. Successful as in their early albums are coveted but you're not going to stumble onto them on any mainstream radio station. Successful as in they're doing enough shows on a fairly active circuit that they can quit their day jobs but they can't buy a house off of the profits.

School Fight
🔸 Stonathan Masterlist
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Jonathan gets a call from his daughter's school informing him that she got into a fight.
A/N: Have a married!Stonathan with a daughter fic to brighten your day ✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jonathan isn't the kind of person who gets angry or irritated. Disappointed yes, but angry? Rarely. So when his 14-year-old daughter's school called and said she had gotten into a fight, Jonathan was extremely disappointed with her. He thought he had raised his daughter better than that, that he had taught her that violence is not the solution for things, but apparently, he was mistaken, and now he has to deal with the fact that he has a probable 14-year old troublemaker wrestler on his hands.
He crossed the school corridors at a brisk pace, the clatter of his shoes against the floor echoing through the empty halls as Jonathan drew closer and closer to the principal's office - with every step, his disappointment grew even greater and he was already starting to think about what kind of punishment he would give his daughter; a month without going out with friends? No allowance for two months? Maybe increase her list of household chores? So many options...
With a deep sigh, Jonathan put his hand on the doorknob, the cold metal sending a small shiver along his arm as he turned the knob, the hinge creaking as the door opened. The principal's secretary, a woman in her mid-40s with brunette hair and a pair of "teacher's glasses" - the ones every boring and obnoxious math teacher wears - looked him up and down and smiled. 'What a fake smile', Jonathan thought as he approached her.
"Hi," he said, his expression neutral but with a slight tone of disappointment and unhappiness, "I was told my daughter got into a fight."
The secretary's fake smile dissipated immediately and a more neutral, tense expression filled her face as she straightened her posture and adjusted her glasses. "Ah, yes. You're Elizabeth's father?"
Jonathan nodded slightly as he tapped his fingertips against his thigh - a habit he has when he's nervous, tapping either his fingers on his thigh or on the table or his foot on the floor. He suppressed a sigh of impatience as the secretary got up and knocked on the door of the principal's office and opened it a little.
"Sir? Elizabeth's father is here."
The woman nodded when the principal said something Jonathan couldn't hear, probably telling her to let him in. She turned to him and gestured for Jonathan to enter the office, "You can go in, sir. He's waiting for you."
Jonathan nodded in thanks and entered the principal's office.
The scene in front of him again made Jonathan suppress a sigh, but this time of irritation. The principal, a man in his late-50s, almost bald and with an expression of someone who had just sucked a lemon, was looking at Jonathan and his daughter, who was sitting opposite to him with her arms crossed and an expression that mixed anger, annoyance and a hint of regret; but all these emotions were replaced by apprehension when Elizabeth's eyes met her father's and she shifted in her chair as if trying to find a more comfortable position while Jonathan silently scolded her.
"Uh... Hi, Dad." She waved her hand slightly, trying to ease the tension - needless to say it didn't work.
"Hi," his voice was so cold that it almost started snowing inside the office. Jonathan sat down in the chair to the left of his daughter's and faced the principal. "What's going on? I was told that my daughter got into a fight."
Elizabeth didn't appear to have gotten into a fight - apart from her slightly messy hair, she was perfectly fine, with no bruises or scratches. The principal cleared his throat as his attention shifted from Elizabeth to Jonathan.
"Yes, that's correct. Elizabeth got into a fight in the middle of the cafeteria. According to other students, two boys approached Elizabeth and started talking to her, but she lost her temper and attacked them both."
"Both?!" Jonathan's eyes widened as he stared at his daughter, his disappointment slowly turning to irritation. Jonathan could never have imagined that his daughter could assault two students and come out of the fight intact. He took a long breath before addressing his daughter, "Liz, I thought I'd raised you better than this..."
"Dad, you don't understand! They were..."
"Don't interrupt me, Elizabeth." He called her 'Elizabeth'. Jonathan only calls his daughter by her full name when he's really disappointed at her. "Now, why don't you explain what happened?"
Elizabeth crossed her arms, a frown forming as she muttered.
"That's what I'm trying to do..."
Where is this rebellious and snippy attitude coming from?! Jonathan narrowed his eyes and gritted his teeth, trying to control his emotions.
"Don't start with that attitude, young lady. You're in enough trouble as it is. Don't make it worse."
The principal cleared his throat, getting Jonathan's attention again.
"Regardless of the reasoning, our school has a strict policy against fighting and Elizabeth will be punished according to our rules. Now..."
"Sir, you can't go in there!"
"What'd you mean I can't? My daughter's in there!"
A commotion from the waiting room disturbed the principal. Jonathan and Elizabeth turned their heads around simultaneously as the door opened violently and a figure came tumbling in.
"I'm here! I'm here! What happened? Oh, my God, Lizzie!" Steve quickly knelt beside his daughter as he looked for injuries, checking her arms, legs, and face as the secretary positioned herself at the door, trying to make sense of the situation and hoping the principal wouldn't blame her for Steve's abrupt entrance. "I heard you got into a fight. Are you all right? Are you hurt? Who hit you? I swear when I find out who did it..."
Jonathan rolled his eyes at Steve's dramatic entrance. He's not in the mood to put up with his daughter and her new rebellious personality and his husband and his dramatic personality.
"Steve, stop it. Liz isn't hurt and nobody hit her. She hit someone..."
The principal cleared his throat, catching Steve's eye. "And who would you be...?"
"Huh? Oh..." Steve got up from the floor, ran a hand through his hair, and flashed his classic charming smile at the principal, "I'm Steve Harrington, Lizzie's father."
The man nodded as he murmured in understanding as he dismissed the secretary. "Oh, yes, of course. I forgot that Elizabeth has two... fathers."
Jonathan suppressed an 'ugh' of disgust when the principal said 'fathers'. He's lost count of how many times he's heard that simple word spoken in a tone of surprise, confusion, and a tinge of disdain or displeasure. Regardless, the principal knows he's in no position to criticize the life of a student's parents and would be in trouble if he's caught doing it, so he straightened his posture and adopted the classic "tough principal" stance as his gaze focused on Elizabeth.
"Well, back to the point; Elizabeth's punishment..."
"Now hold on a second, pal," Steve interrupted the principal as he stood next to his daughter, "first I want to know why my daughter hit a student..."
"Two students, Mr. Harrington..."
"Two?! Shit, Lizzie, you're as good a fighter as your dad, huh?"
Steve put his hands on his daughter's shoulders as he gestured towards Jonathan, who was pinching the bridge of his nose, now exasperated by the situation. First, his daughter gets into a fight with two students, then, she starts with a rebellious attitude, then, Steve makes a dramatic entrance, interrupts the principal, calls him 'pal', says 'shit' in the principal's presence and now he's praising Jonathan and their daughter's fighting skills?! At this point, Jonathan isn't sure who he's going to ground first, his husband or his daughter.
"Mr. Harrington, the reason for the fight doesn't matter. What matters is that your daughter injured two students and..."
"It doesn't matter to you, but it does to me!" Steve puts his hands on his waist as he frowns at the principal before turning to his daughter with a friendlier but still firm expression. "Lizzie, what happened? Tell me everything. Don't hide any details."
"This is ridiculous, Steve." Jonathan is not in the mood to listen to whatever excuse his daughter has to tell them. "She started a fight and will be punished for it."
"It wasn't me...!"
"Quiet, Elizabeth. Don't interrupt me."
"Regardless of the reason, Elizabeth violated our rules of conduct and will be punisehd accordingly..."
"Hey, wait a minute, pal. You're not going to do anything until she explains herself."
"Steve, stop it..."
"Jon, for God's sake..."
"Gentlemen, please..."
"THEY WERE MOCKING ME FOR HAVING TWO DADS!"
Elizabeth's words echoed around the room, leaving a haunting echo that made Steve and Jonathan's souls freeze - especially Jonathan's. He was so disappointed in his daughter and angry about the situation that he wasn't thinking straight. He should have known better. Of course his daughter wouldn't get into a fight for no reason. Of course he raised her better than that. And yet, Jonathan did nothing but admonish her and think of punishments. God, he feels like the worst father in the world right now.
"Liz," Jonathan breaks the silence first, turning to face his daughter and gently resting his hand on her shoulder, "tell us what happened. Please."
Elizabeth sighed as she tried to work up the courage to speak, feeling the scolding look from the principal and the gentle but firm glances from Jonathan and Steve.
"I was sitting at a table talking to my friends when two boys approached me and started talking. I already know them and I can tell you that they're two assholes..."
"Language, Liz." Jonathan gently chastises his daughter for her poor choice of words in front of the principal. Steve glares at Jonathan, silently telling him to let Elizabeth continue.
"Anyway, these two guys approached me and started asking weird questions, like 'Where did I come from if I don't have a mother' and 'Which one of you is the woman in the relationship'..."
Her words make Jonathan widen his eyes as Steve clenches his jaw so hard his teeth might break at any moment.
"I tried to ignore them, I swear I did, but when they called me a freak and said our family is a bunch of screw-ups, I... I lost my mind..."
She lowers her head slightly, afraid of what the reactions of the adults around her will be and a little remorseful, because if it weren't for her actions, no one would be here at this very moment. Despite this, Elizabeth's heart continues telling her that she did the right thing - she defended her family's honor. And yet, she's the one on the verge of being punished while those two jerks will go unpunished (at least Elizabeth gave them one hell of a beating).
Her parents, although still a little annoyed and irritated at the whole situation, looked at their daughter and then at each other for a couple of seconds, mentally conversing and reaching a consensus - their daughter did nothing wrong. Unfortunately, the principal disagreed with this decision.
"Well... That's... unfortunate, for sure, but it doesn't change the fact that Elizabeth physically assaulted two students and that can't go unpunished..."
"What?!"
"No way!"
Steve and Jonathan shout in sync, visibly irritated, Steve in particular, is ready to pounce at the man.
"Didn't you hear what she just said? Or have the hairs in your ear made you deaf?"
"How dare you say Liz did something wrong?!"
"Mr. Harrington and Mr. Byers, please. Miss Harrington-Byers' behavior is unacceptable and she will be punished with a month's suspension..."
"A MONTH?!"
"All right, that's enough!" Jonathan takes his wallet out of his pocket and starts searching for something, silently wondering where it is, until he makes an 'a-ha!' sound and removes a blue card. "Here it is! If you're not going to do the right thing, then we'll go after someone who will..."
Jonathan turns the card to the principal and shows him what it says. The man who until now had been posing as a tough guy and trying his best to intimidate Steve and Jonathan is now paler than a sheet of paper the moment he lays eyes on the card:
Tumblr media
(A/N: Yes, I made a fake business card for Nancy because that's my level of devotion to my fics)
"You know, principal, one of the advantages of being a photojournalist is that you meet several interesting people out there, including my good friend, Nancy Wheeler. I bet you've heard of her, haven't you? I bet she'd love to know that you're complacent with this attitude from your students."
Jonathan takes out his phone and starts dialing the number slowly, saying the numbers out loud, one by one.
The principal is shaking as if he's been hit by an earthquake. If they call a journalist, his career will be ruined, in shambles!
"Wait, wait! Two weeks' detention for your daughter and one month's detention for the other two students. How's that?"
"The next number is a '3', Jon..."
"A week's detention for Elizabeth and a month's detention for the students and they'll go through sensitivity training!"
"3... 4... 5..."
"A day's detention for Elizabeth... Please don't do this!"
"How 'bout this..." Steve turns to the principal with a fake smile, "Lizzie won't be punished in any way and the two brats who said those things will get a week's suspension and then a month's detention and they'll go through sensitivity training. And if their parents start whining, tell them that Police Officer Harrington will be more than happy to explain the situation to them. Sounds good, pal?"
Jonathan keeps his finger millimeters away from the green button on his phone, waiting for the principal's reply. The man sighs and deflates.
"All right. Agreed."
"Great! I knew you were a reasonable man!" Steve comments happily as he rests his hands on his daughter's shoulders. "Now, if you'll excuse us, we'll get Lizzie home. She must be exhausted after all this unfortunate mess... And of course, she won't be marked absent from the remaining classes, will she?"
Despite the question mark at the end of the sentence, this was not a question, but rather a statement, and the principal knew it very well. He nodded and dismissed Elizabeth from the rest of the day's lessons. Steve and Jonathan shared a look of triumph and escorted their daughter out of the office.
Once they were sure they were a good enough distance away from the principal's office, the trio started laughing.
"I can't believe you pulled that trick, Jon. It was incredible!"
"Did you see his face? It was like he saw the devil himself!"
"I think the principal's going to have nightmares about us for a year."
"Definitely! By the way, Liz..." Jonathan caught the eye of his daughter. "Who were the two assholes who said those things?"
"Oh, it was Tommy Hagan Jr. and Chris Holloway."
"Hagan?"
Steve and Jonathan said the name in sync while making disgusted faces. That name brought back not-very-pleasant memories of high school.
"Of course, it had to be Hagan... Hey, Lizzie, did you know your dad gave Hagan's dad quite a beating back in our school days?" Steve pointed at Jonathan. "It was one hell of a beating, worthy of a belt and trophy, and it looks like you've inherited your dad's fighting skills, huh?"
"Steve..." Jonathan admonished. "Don't encourage her, please."
"Oh, come on, Jon. Hey, maybe she'll get a boyfriend after beating him up! That's how I fell in love with you - when you beat the shit out of me back in '83..."
"God, not this story again..." Elizabeth groaned as she watched Steve wiggle his eyebrows while looking at Jonathan with that "lovesick idiot" look - frankly, that's how Steve looks at his husband 90% of the day. "Can you two wait 'til later to start acting like that?"
"Oh, what's the matter, sweetheart?" Steve teased his daughter with a smile while ruffling her hair. "Your dads have only been madly in love since 1983. You'll understand when you have a boyfriend... Or girlfriend."
"Yeah, but only after 30, Liz. If you show up with a boy at home, we'll throw him out... And if you show up with a girl, your Aunt Robin will throw her out!"
"That's right, no dating for you, young lady. I don't want to chase any boys with my spiked bat."
Elizabeth rolled her eyes at her dads while trying to suppress a smile at their overprotectiveness. This wasn't the first time they'd had this conversation about boyfriends (or girlfriends) and it certainly won't be the last one either.
God... Wait until they find out she already has a boyfriend... It's going to be hell on earth.

Number six is my number.
Today, November 6th, I went to take a written exam and have an interview for a position as a researcher on a project at my uni. I received the results and scored a whooping 95/100 points, making me the top candidate they will take on the project. I had a good feeling in the morning regarding it, and an even better after it was all done. This is why I was gone for a long time, to finish my Master thesis, defend it, finish my last exams and apply and prepare for this job.
Hard work paid off, and I will likely start working this December. I will get the opportunity to enjoy a book fair next week, treat myself and write some too.
December 6th, though, is another wonderful date as Wind and Truth gets published. Moral of the story, 6 is my number. 666 is Doffy's. Hope to spend more time here now that I can finally breathe again.
