VIOLET BACKED STARLINGS An example of extreme sexual dimorphism... Sexual dimorphism is the existence of physical differences between the sexes, other than differences in the sex organs. Darwin contended that sexual dimorphism evolved by means of SEXUAL selection. rather than NATURAL selection. Darwin's main argument for the importance of sexual selection was comparative: his principal evidence came from looking at a large number of species. The comparison showed that the species in which males and females are more similar were more often monogamous. Species with brightly colored, large, or dangerously armed males are more often polygynous: several females mate with one male (and other males do not breed at all). In a polygynous species a single male can potentially breed with more females than under monogamy; selection in favor of adaptations that enable males to gain access to females (whether by male competition or female choice) is proportionally stronger. Darwin therefore reasoned that polygynous species should have stronger sexual dimorphism than monogamous species. Darwin's book The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871) contains a long review of sexual dimorphism in the animal kingdom. In humans, it seems, sexual dimorphism has decreased during our evolution. Beetleblood's moodboard! Like the Poes in Ocarina, Barnabus Beetleblood is pretty grim-looking, but all in all harmless. Faust or Dr. Baldhead in Guilty Gear is a major inspiration for Beetleblood. A doctor who WILL cure you, even if you swear you're not feeling sick. He's so DEDICATED to his medical practise. Plague Knight is probably one of my all-Time favourite plague doctor designs, I also wanted to incorporate some of the aesthetics from his stage into Beetleblood's design, like the apothecary bottles. He's definitely feral & swift like Plague Knight. I used two animal motifs that should be unsurprising to anyone who's followed for even a little while. Beetleblood's mask is based off an Owl Moth, while his overall colour scheme and design is reminiscent of a Violet-backed Starling. I wanted to give Beetleblood something that would set him apart from a typical plague doctor of the period, and since we weren't beholden to keeping everything period, I gave old Beetleblood an affinity for kinky boots. Beetleblood is dramatic, extra, and just a little bit darkly ridiculous. He makes an entrance not unlike good ol' Jean Descole, the self-proclaimed scientist. Beetleblood is a skilled hand with needles, even if it makes him look a little eerie. I was really hopeful to incorporate some of Nurse Hallows' design into him because she's one of the coolest "dark medical" designs I've ever seen. Also, just look up the Last Hope from Skullgirls. They're all based off holidays & I think they're a neatly designed little group. But I digress.
