Favorite books??

Helloooo! Thank you for this ask! We have decided to list favorite books by ages for everyone below the cut! So, all of our favorite books as children, our favorite books as tweens, and our favorite books teens and adults!

And yes, each family member is responding to this ask!

Please note there is mention of Harry Potter, I (JIG) know the author/books are triggering to some, so please do not take offense to this, I just feel like the books would have been some read by one family member in particular wayyyyy before all the unsavory details came out.

Also, a lot of these books are my personal favorites, or they are books I actually dislike immensely…so my selfship kids liking them makes me laugh 😂.

Zach: As a child I was always partial to The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams and the Peter Rabbit books by Beatrix Potter. I also loved How The Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. As a tween/teenager, I liked the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien, and the Ender’s Game Saga by Orson Scott Card. Now that I’m an adult, I’d have to say The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and 1984 by George Orwell are probably my favorite novels. 

Violet/JIG: As a little girl my favorite book was The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss, there was just something about the “here comes pig feet” line that cracked me up, I also adored Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco. As a tween I loved Grandpa’s Mountain by Carolyn Reeder and the American Girls Books. As a teen and adult I’d say my favorite books were/are Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter (the best nonfiction book I’ve ever read), Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, The Fear Street Series by RL Stine, and anything by Mary Downing Hahn.

Varina: As a child my favorite books were Winnie-the-Pooh stories, my mom had an entire collection her parents collected for her and she read them to me and all my siblings! I also loved A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon, the Mr. Putter and Tabby books by Cynthia Rylant, and the Amelia Bedelia books by Peggy Parish. As a tween I enjoyed The Tale of Despereaux and the American Girls books. As an adult/teen my favorite books were/are Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, The Magic of Ordinary Days by Ann Howard Creel, and I adore any romance novel by Nicholas Sparks. 

Vera: When I was a little girl I loved the Fancy Nancy books by Jane O'Connor, any and all princess books, the Biscuit books by Alyssa Satin Capucilli, and the Junie B. Jones Books by Barbara Park. As a tween I read the American Girl books, but only I enjoyed a few of the series, Samantha was my absolute favorite! I also loved The Secret Garden and A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and The Wish by Gail Carsen Levine. My favorite books during my teenage years, and as an adult, are The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls, any of William Shakespeare’s plays (Romeo and Juliet is my favorite), and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. 

Victor: When I was little my favorite book was Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, my favorite book series was Curious George by Margret and H. A. Rey. During my tween years I read any Goosebumps book by RL Stein I could get my hands on, I also read all The Chronicles of Narnia books by C.S. Lewis, and A Series of Unfortunate Events books by Lemony Snicket.  My favorite book as a teenager was The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, and my favorite book series as a teenager were Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs and the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. My all time favorite book as an adult is Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer.

Vallen: The Wonky Donkey by Craig Smith was my favorite book as a kid, it was freaking hilarious, and the sequel was almost as good. I also loved the Clifford books by Norman Bridwell as a kid, and the No David books by David Shannon. As a tween I read a bunch of the Goosebumps books by RL Stine. Victor and I were in competition to see who could read the most, he won of course, the dedicated bookworm. In my teenage years and into adulthood my favorites have become The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry, and The Wayward Pines Trilogy by Blake Crouch.

Victoria: When I was a little girl I loved all of the Eric Carle books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar being my favorite! I also loved all the Little Golden Books, I think my favorite one was My Little Golden Book About God by Jane Werner Watson. Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White, Each Little Bird that Sings by Deborah Wiles, and the Little House on the Prairie Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder were my favorite books during my tween years. As a teenager I enjoyed reading the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children book series by Ransom Riggs and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. As an adult I’d say my favorite books are Wish You Well by David Baldacci or Go Down the Mountain by Meredith Battle.

II. Should I Stay or Should I Go

Six days and twelve hours.

I didn't text her, but I was keeping up with every single Instagram post and every single snap story.

And we haven't spoken since the day she came over to fix my life and left it as soon as. Well that's not true, she texted me a verse from Goodnight Moon on the night of.

I've been reading that text for six days, once every hour.

She's strange, she never puts on a show but the way she talks you think she does. Always speaking with that Mid-Atlantic accent and in quotes, Megan says she has always been like that.

It's like she walked right off an old movie and into the 21st century, so fucking beautiful. About 5'3 of pure tease. She was laughing at something a good looking, edgy, tall blonde guy was saying, and I wanted to knock his teeth out. I recognized him as Henry Creel from Stranger Things.

I rolled down the window of my F-Pace and her stunning lavender-blue eyes finally acknowledged me. She looks so happy to see me, take that Stranger dick. This girl's smile is out of this world, her plump pink lips spread to reveal her pretty and slightly crooked teeth that strangely turn me on, especially that gap between her two front teeth. Such a cutie.

"Colson!" She ran over to me and I got out of the car, she wrapped her arms around my waist and I pulled her close and kissed her head. She smells amazing, woody, earthy, and floral like a fairy.  

"Hey Mink." 

She stood on her toes with a little bounce  to reach up and ruffle my carnation pink hair. I briefly closed my eyes at the feeling of her fingers in my hair. "Needs a touch up, it's fading." She commented with a hum.

"Oh you're a hairdresser now?"  I teased.

She giggled, all teeth and crinkled eyes as her nose scrunched up like a bunny.  "Well my cousin Alicja is. She teaches me everything."

"Not your stylist?"

"I don't have one." She said simply and kissed my cheek. "Darling, are you up for introductions or shall I give my apologies to Jamie?" She gestured to the tattooed string bean, like I had room to talk.

"I just wanna hang out with you, not trying to be a dick but I mean…it's been six days."

She laughed softly and playfully pinched my cheek. "He's been counting, how cute." 

I rolled my eyes and she gave my hand a gentle squeeze with her soft one. "I'll tell him you're not feeling well, give me a second, gorgeous." With that term of endearment She ran back over to the actor.

Jamie looked disappointed, but only to see Minka go. I bit back a frown when she gave him a peck on the lips and a chest-pressed hug before running back to me.

I honestly don't know why I did it, but I wrapped my arm around her and opened the car door before practically placing her in.

"Let's go to your place and have lunch, I'll make it." She suggested. "But we should stop for candy and wine." She exclaimed. 

I laughed "Sounds chill, but maybe we should Doordash it, I'm not prepared to get ambushed."

"That's true, oh but you know what's better than Doordash? Kai-dash, I'll text Kaiden. What teeth rotting goodies do you want?"

"You have good taste, you decide."

Megan was at the spa, she usually spends a while there before going to get a botox touch up. Casie is at her mom's for a couple days, so it was going to be just the two of us.

"Kaiden will be here with our snacks in twenty minutes." She said as she followed me inside. 

"Does he want to chill with us?" I hoped that would be a big fat no, kinda just need some Minka time, she's therapeutic. 

"No, he has plans, I promised not to bother him for the rest of the day.'' She smiled. "May I take off my shoes?"

"Yeah of course, get comfortable. "

I really shouldn't have said that, especially with my kinks. Because when she sat down and removed her boots and everything, the most beautiful well pedicured pair of feet whorishly revealed themselves to me. She didn't seem to mind though. "Sounds perfect, you can choose the music. "

I told Alexa to play the Appetite for Destruction album and Minka lit up like a Christmas tree. "This is one of my favorite albums!"

I felt myself grinning. "Yeah? That's fire, I love that 80s rock."

"Me too, Duff McKagan is one of the best bassists of all time, definitely giving props to his punk roots." Could she be any more perfect? When girls talk music, it's so hot.

 "You a punk fan?"

She nodded enthusiastically.  "The Clash and Theatre of Hate are my favorite bands."

"The Clash is fire, Theatre of Hate I never heard of."

"I need to show you them, they're from England early 80s. Lead singer was romantically involved with Boy George, basically all of Culture Club's music is about Kirk Brandon, the lead singer of Theatre of Hate."

"Holy shit, you know a lot. Why didn't you go into music?'

"I'm a homebody, I don't know if I could tour."

I nodded. "Makes sense, I'm a homebody myself and it can get a lot."

"Whenever you're feeling overwhelmed on tour, call me up Colson, I mean it." She said it with such tenderness, I felt that shit in my throat. 

'`You didn't mention you aren't musically talented, are you?' I decided it was safe to change the subject.

As she was cooking she briefly looked at me with a secret smile. "I'll never tell."

"You and your secrets. "

"They're all I have to myself. And clearly that's not even true anymore." She was referring to the recent apparent scandal.  It was fucked up to call it that. Makes me mad all of the ignorant assholes on social media, it got so bad she had to take down her socials.

I felt an overwhelming urge of protectiveness over the sweet little actress, and went over pulling her in a bear hug. She hugged my arm and kissed it. Her smell and how she feels in her arms was too good, too comfortable, I didn't want to let her go, didn't want her to leave, just wanted to shield her from the world.. 

We stayed like that for a while, and she went back to making lunch. I checked my phone when the doorbell rang, and saw Kaiden. So I got the snacks from him before he ran off to a hookup judging by that smile.

Looking in the bag I saw cherry peel able twizzlers, a box of See's Candies chocolates, Milano's, Godiva chocolate covered strawberries, Haribo rainbow worms and happy cherries, Albanese gummy bears, sour patch kids, Ferrero rocher bars, some Häagen-Dazs, 

"Lunch is ready."

"Smells so good, what did you make?"

"Bang bang tacos and shrimp quesadillas."

"Tryna fatten me up? I know I'm skin bones." I laughed. "I'm shocked you're not married by now."

"28 is much too young to get married! And as much as I admire Elizabeth Taylor, I don't want seven names, I want my forever."

For some reason, my imagination went wild, thinking of this as an everyday occurrence.  My arm around her curvy little build, as she's cooking over the stove, laughing at something I said. 

It's not cool, I'm engaged to Megan. Even if I'm starting to feel like somebody else gets me.

"But you've been asked."

She looked up at me with her lavender-blue gaze as she put my plate together. "What would you like to drink?"

"I'll take that as a yes."

She took out sparkling lime waters from the fridge and sliced up some lime to put it in. 

"Who was it?" I didn't mean to ask s aggressively, but I had to know who had tried their hand at claiming her and failed.

"Which time?''

Why am I not surprised? "Go in order." I put everything on a tray and I took it to carry to the living room. 

"At sixteen–".

"Sixteen!?"

She laughed at my frown. "Sixteen, I wasn't even seeing anyone, I was a shy little virgin who was newly starting acknowledging myself as Minka. My best friend at the time, her dad, offered to leave his wife for me, marry me, and pay for my surgery."

I was really pissed off that some grown ass man tried to take advantage of a kid like that. Especially Minka.

I sat down and she joined me. "What a creep, I'm sorry you had to go through that."

She shrugged. "It doesn't phase me, I just honestly thought about how depressed I'd be if I left my family. I never considered it. Then at eighteen it was my boyfriend, Taylor. He was a trans man, related to some beatniks who did really well for themselves, he himself was a punk which was funny considering he grew up with three houses. He owned five motorcycles and four sportscars. He was forty two."

I got my stash out and started rolling.

"I cannot imagine you with some wannabe bad boy. " I laughed. "You always with an old man?"

"You're quite right, I much prefer the real ones. But yes I love older men, they're obsessive and that suits me. But I said no to Taylor, but not at first." She grinned like the cat that got the cream.

"Wait, you were engaged!?"

She laughed and took a bite out of a taco the same time I did. Damn if I could choose what to eat everyday. 

"For seven days, in London. He had a flat there in SoHo. Seven wonderful days, he proposed to me with Elizabeth Taylor's ring from Richard Burton that he bought off of Kathy Ireland."

"You and your old people."

She playfully slapped my arm. "Hush, I'm storytelling!" He giggled. "I can stop anytime."

"No" I touched her knee. "Don't. So, he proposed with your idol's ring…

She nodded.  "Seven days we were engaged."

"What happened to Prince charming?"

"I missed my family, I cried calling my mother. I was sobbing in Polish on the phone, you'd think I was kidnapped. Poor Taylor… I have such an attachment to my family. Even now, i bought Jerzy, my brother , a house two doors down from mine and Petra lives there with him, my sister."

"Was Taylor your last proposal?"

She laughed. "Absolutely not, the year before I became big I met Jamie when we were visiting my mother's sister, Aunt Ewa, in London. It was 2014. We stayed in the summer. I met Jamie at a show. His band didn't know it, his band is a side but they're so good. He saw me in the first row and took me backstage. We spent every day together, mamusia loved him." She looked a little conflicted at the moment. "The youngest man I've been with and he's seven years older. Well, it was my happiest relationship. We had so much in common, and I could handle his alcohol problems. " I took a drag of my joint feeling of jealousy and anger course through me. "Even when it got bad, even when he hid me from everyone. Only my siblings knew we were together. My parents thought we were just best friends, and he got me a role in a movie…he wanted me to be a star." I offered her a smoke but she shook her head and continued. "When the summer was ending he didn't want to lose me. He proposed to me in secret, even though he was already engaged to Lily Collins. I knew that but I was too caught up to care, I get so romantic sometimes. He proposed to me with an amethyst and diamond engagement ring, for my eyes and my birthstone. I wore it on a necklace and hid it. He got me a spot in the West End theater and told my parents, so I could stay with him." She smiled but it didn't meet her beautiful eyes. "And it worked, and  he put me up in a SoHo townhouse he bought for me for us, away from Lily and his family. I was trained in the west end and quickly got put in films. He was my manager…my best friend, and my fiancé. It was…well it became a little much and after two years I permanently moved back to America.  But he didn't allow anyone to try and seduce me or woo me. We were still engaged. Up until three years ago." She got up and headed to the kitchen, I followed as I felt so much rage. 

She found a bottle of wine and poured a glass. 

"Hold the fuck up, is that the same Stranger Things dick I saw you with today?!"

She took a big gulp and nodded "We're friends now, we've been good for a year, we're good now. I just…going through the memories again–"

"Minka, what the fuck– I don't want you to–"

"You have no right, don't start talking mad now darling. " She set the glass down and walked her hip swaying walk into the living room. 

"Mink, fuck. I don't give a fuck what you say– fuck, he still wants you! This sounds toxic–

"Colson, darling. Let's not get hysterical." She climbed into my lap and cupped my face, I couldn't breathe. My nostrils flared like a bull from rage and sexual frustration, and all I can smell is her. I think about Jamie acting like it's all fine but it isn't and I want to beat his face in. He thinks he still has her. The thought of him touching her having her…I want to kill him, why am I feeling like this?

I pulled her close, gripping her hips so tight. I noticed her pretty face wince, her skirt was bunched up around her shapely thighs. I pressed my forehead against hers. 

"Take a deep breath now love, in…" I inhaled like she said. "And exhale…" I let go and closed my eyes, she guided my head to her chest and she stroked my hair, it felt so nice. 

"Now button, it's dirt under a rug isn't it? Nothing to upset your stomach over, hmm? Now Jamie knows we are just friends. I have made it clear, we have been through too much to never say anything to one another again." She kissed my head and I hugged her closer. "Let's watch your favorites, okay monkey?"

I laughed gently. "I'm not a baby you know."

"Of course you are! You're my baby." She was teasing but I didn't want her to. The thought was nice.

HENRY CREEL, 001, OR PETER BALLARD, never thought himself to be capable of ever loving, or possibly even growing an attachment to someone else.

It was, after all, in his firm belief that everyone, including those mediocre people he'd once called family, was fake. Façade after façade covered them up like secrets brushed under a rug. To him, they, or all humans in general, were a unique sort of pest. One which multiplied and enforced an undesirable structure of their own—to which he aims to one day wipe off the face of the Earth with the abilities he'd come to hone.

That was the plan, at least, until he met her.

Y/N "Number Zero" Hargreeves was an enigma so unlike the rest. She was a mystery. She was someone he just couldn't seem to get a grasp on no matter how hard it was he tried, and how much he desired to.

Perhaps it was that peaceful expression that rested on her face that day long ago when Papa had brought her unconscious form into the confines of the dull, white lab. Perhaps it was the familiar crimson colour that was trickling down her forehead, and the way she paid it no mind despite her awakening. Or perhaps it was the way her eyes seemed to hold a panic she dared not even hesitate to act upon, using these—much like his own, yet so different—abilities to blast everyone within a 5-foot radius away from her with some translucent, violet force field that she'd generated with a glaring gaze.

Nonetheless, there was always something about her that piqued his interest even from the very start.

The longer her stay in that peculiar location stretched out, along with it, died the embers of hope the Hargreeves had of reuniting with her dysfunctional family of misfits.

When the day she'd gotten to this timeline first began, it was but a normal day in the Umbrella Academy. That was, at least, until she and her adoptive brother and best friend, Five, disobeyed the old coot's orders, and attempted to travel through time together.

There was obviously a fluke in the said attempt, rendering her in a state of unconsciousness in an empty alleyway decades back in time, and Five, all alone in the desolate doomsday of a future with but a mannequin he'd come to name in Y/N's memory, to keep him company.

She somehow—never truly understanding how—ended up in the reach of a man named Martin Brenner, some sort of doctor who upon her awakening, insisted she from henceforth called him "Papa" and no later introduced her to a boy around her age of the name Henry Creel, or "Number 001" as the man had so deemed him and tattooed on his wrist.

There was always something dark and dreary about his empty gaze, something to which she, herself, too unknowingly reciprocated, only further provoking the blonde boy's sparking curiosity. However, unable to withhold interest, nor his frustrations of being unable to protrude her mind any longer, he later approached her with a stoically polite expression, unknowingly extending not only his friendship but also a part of his entire being to the oddly interesting girl he'd later come to love wholly as time passed them by.

Those plans of his on wiping off humanity came and gone, much like all the seasons they were never able to watch drifting off.

Bit by bit, piece by piece, they both slowly came to open up to one another in regards to their own dark pasts—Henry, on his once, albeit somewhat changing, pessimistic views on both the world and humanity and Y/N, with the body count that hung over her head and the harsh training she and her step-siblings received from their billionaire of a father.

Doctor Brenner was, of course, happy to note the pair's ever-growing bond despite being unbeknownst to just what it is they share with one another.

Why wouldn't he be, when this offers him the chance to not only one day, have gifted infants within his grasp, but also serve the pair a reason to forever stay within the confines of his lab.

Thus, instead of tearing them apart, he took to encouraging them in the strengthening of their bond-allowing them plenty of unsupervised time together in the rainbow room and turning a blind eye despite knowing that one of them more often so than not, sneaks off to the other's room in the dead of night.

It was practically part of their routine at some point, whether the reason was for the blonde to ease his closest confidant of her nightmares, to hold one another close, or even as they got older, to relieve themselves of this strange warmth within them, and coming undone for hours-on-end.

Nevertheless, despite the little challenges the doctor had at testing their limits, and whatever troubles may have come their way, they always had one another to return to at the end of the day—a thought to which kept them going despite whatever hardships they may have been surpassing.

Something that, of course, was the truest of true until the day came that it just wasn't.

It was the same old story, waking up in one another's arms, Henry, pulling his lover close to his bare chest before peppering featherlight kisses along her shoulder and neck. His intimate little actions, having the (H/C) stir awake and blinking up at him from her half-lidded gaze.

"Good morning, my love," he'd always utter as he caressed her tousled tresses with a touch so soft, and those fingers of his that threaded through, and parted them with that tender touch he dared not even think to show another.

Truthfully, both he and she shouldn't even be baring those locks that fell down to their shoulders, and tickling them with its butterfly-like touch, what with Papa's wish to shave them off. But of course, such an action seemed to be impossible with the Hargreeve's impenetrable force fields blocking and ceasing such an action before it could even have begun.

Somehow, it was during such times—when the sun shines warmth upon the outside they had long since caught a glimpse of, that they seemed the most at peace. Both hands scarred with murder, somehow tendering, fondled with love in every trusted touch; a sanctuary for them, it was.

But of course, such things, such private, loving moments, were, like always, cut short; the fear of punishment or something of the sort, driving them, or in this case, Henry, back to his blank, empty room with but a parting kiss that lingered on his lips before he'd gone, unknowing to the way that this would have been the final morning they'd spend in one another's arms in what would seem like forever for his scarred and tattered heart.

Clad in their grey sweaters and sweatpants, the pair of seventeen-year-olds were found seated parallel to one another in the familiar walls of the Rainbow Room; a chess set atop the plain table, separating them as they twiddled with the black and white pieces.

The match, leaning in Henry's favour, was coming to a close—that much too familiar sly, seductive smirk, twisting the edge of his lip as his piece knocked his lover's king down with a small, echoing thud. "Check-"

"Mate." A new voice suddenly interrupted, causing the pair to instinctively arise and back into one another's sides; their hands, threateningly outstretched towards the smirking brunette. "Good game, but it's time I take my sister dearest back."

"Who do you think you are?" Henry voiced out, eyes narrowed, and lips tugged into a thin line as he pulled his person closer to his touch.

The physically younger boy only smiled sarcastically; dimples creasing his cheeks as he looked the blonde's way in a condescending manner. "I said, you nitwit, I'm here to collect my sister." His smile suddenly softened by a fraction as he transferred his gaze onto the girl Henry protectively stood by—frozen in shock, she appeared to be, which made the tanned boy chuckle.

"Hey, Zero." That familiar name only he called her, slipped so warmly down his tongue; a watery chuckle escaping the girl upon such, unbeknownst to her significant other's questioning gaze. "Y/N?"

"Five," she uttered in the volume of a breathy whisper. Upon his slight nod, she wasted no time in rushing out of her lover's arms, and into that of her best friend's so heavily missed touch; her forehead, resting down on the top of his head, and burying her face into his hair, what with the new height difference.

"You look-" "Exactly the same, I know." A hearty laugh escaped her as he replied; a thought only then occurred to her, as she pushed herself out of his tight embrace, flicking his forehead like she often used to. "Ow!"

"What the hell happened, you imbecile!" She glared down at him, faced with his only slightly sheepish expression, avoiding her gaze altogether.

"Well, the old coot was right, alright?" He sighed frustratedly, bringing a hand up to his dark hair, and ruffling it up further than it already was, no sooner facing her with an impatient manner immediately after, "We'll discuss this later, okay?"

As she opened her mouth to disagree, he quickly went and cut her off��his voice, seemingly strained as his eye twitched in a held-back irritance. "Y/N, there is more to my presence here than just rescuing you from this hellhole, you got it?"

"All our lives are in danger, and an apocalypse is coming."

She quickly understood from his use of the name Grace, or their "Mom" had given her, that he was intensely serious. His killer gaze was only doing wonders for this fact as he outstretched a hand her way. "It's time we go."

She was just about to give in to his pleading peer when a thought occurred to her, and she retracted her hand back upon looking back at her puzzled partner's direction. "But what about Henry?" She questioned Five, who shook his head.

"But-" She met her lover's beautiful blue irises for a final time before a sharp pain was sent to the back of her head, and black slowly took over her vision—the blonde's distant yells and threats echoing the room, along with her brother's final words filling her ears before everything went black. "I'm sorry, Y/N, but you can't change the timeline more than you already have."

"What do you think you're doing with her?" Henry glared down at the shorter boy, who now crouched to his adoptive sister's side; a hand on her shoulder. An invisible chokehold, constricted the "thirteen-year-old"'s throat as he gasped out for much-needed air, glaring up at the Voldemort wannabe his best friend somehow found love within.

Despite seemingly being at a disadvantage, along with the sudden burst of security that entered the room, Five only smirked before a bright, blue visionary overtook him—leaving not a single trace of not only his presence but of Y/N's as well.

Henry stumbled back upon the sudden release of force he'd once been bending; his panicked eyes, flying everywhere in the room in search of his girl, his gravity, his source of sanity. "Y/N?" He mumbled out in a brokenly desperate plea as his eyes raked the room almost unstably.

"Y/N, love, this isn't funny!" He yelled, lips barely holding back their trembles as Doctor Brenner eyed the area Number 000 had once been gaping. "Astounding..."

"Y/N?!" For once, the cool and collected Henry Creel had gone; in his place, was a young man who had only just let the world finally crack him completely. "Y/N, love, where are you?!"

Everything, from the walls, the little figurines, and toys, all the way to the chess pieces from earlier, began shaking in a severe magnitude—the lights, igniting and bursting with sparks as the broken lover let out a pain-laced yell; all the nearby items and appliances, exploding with the burst of the lights. As darkness consumed the room, it too, came to overtake the fading out form of Henry Creel, who, due to his distracted state, was rendered unbeknownst to the needle that came plunging into his neck and having him fall to the ground in a state almost like death. His breathing, being the lone indicator of life within his blinking-out form.

He was only able to take in the nearby fallen figure of the black king's piece which he had earlier knocked over with a smirk, despite his lover's hold on it. The illusion of her pouty expression faded out, in accompaniment to his consciousness; a final thought echoing the walls of his head as he allowed all that pain, defeat, and fatigue to wash over him.

I will never rest, Y/N. Not until I found you.

A Successful Trout Opener

Although it took me about 45 minutes to find a stretch of water that hadn’t already been claimed by other anglers, I did eventually find a spot. If I remember correctly, I hadn’t been fishing since May of 2017. For somebody who used to fish 300+ times per year, that is a drastic change!

I was spin fishing with little spinners. On this particular stretch of this particular river, I’ve found that if I use spinners, I always connect with some fish. Flies have worked sometimes but not as consistently. I wondered if the spinners would be too quick for the fish in the frigid water, but pretty soon I noticed some follows and eventually landed my first fish of the year.

I fished leisurely, thoroughly enjoying the fresh air, the warm sun, and the excitement of connecting with more fish.

The river, as always, was stunningly picturesque. Although the banks were mostly bare, brown, and grey, the colorful rocks in the stream were a joy to see.

After fishing my way through the first stretch, I headed down a wooded path to explore a new one. From the road this portion of river seemed deep and slow, but just around the bend the stream quickened and became more trout-friendly.

The banks, however, were decidedly human unfriendly.

I crawled over a stack of downed limbs, then crouched on a thin perch of sand a few feet over the river. I tossed my spinner into some dark and promising water. There was a flash, and there was a fish!

It was a challenge to get the fish to my net, as I was wholly on the shore and there was a giant tree trunk, parallel to the shore, between us.

But get it to the net I did! My stomach grumbled as I thought about pan fried trout with ramps. I didn’t mention anything about that though, out of respect for the fish. No need to add insult to injury, or in this case, death.

I measured it, bonked it on the head with a piece of wood I carry for that purpose, then slid it into my creel.

Yes, nature is cruel, but we all gotta eat.

I fished for a while longer, getting many follows from what looked like more brown trout. I would certainly be revisiting this stretch.

Soon it was time to head back home. I climbed up the bank, trout in my creel, a spring in my step. As I hiked back to the truck I took note of all the marvelous little things along the way.

At home I quickly butterflied the fish, my favorite trout-cleaning method. You’re left with a flat, pretty much boneless fish that is perfect for pan frying, stuffing, or any number of other preparations. I used a pair of scissors and my brand new Opinel No. 8 pocket knife.

There is something unique about every trout I’ve ever kept from this particular stream: their meat smells like peaches! At first I thought this was due to their diet at certain times of the year, but I’ve caught and kept some throughout the season… And they always smell like peaches.

Interestingly, once it’s cooked the peach smell completely disappears. It’s a shame eating freshwater sushi is so ill-advised, otherwise I bet these would be absolutely delicious.

Once I finished butterflying the fish I slipped it into a ziplock bag. I went about the rest of my day knowing that I’d be enjoying a meal of fresh trout very soon.
