Album Review: Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (Deluxe Edition)
Between 1981 and ’83, the Violent Femmes morphed from a rough-hewn Milwaukee bar band to national - yet still quirky - recording act with an unlikely hit single in “Blister in the Sun.”
The remarkable evolution of the folk-punk trio - guitarist/singer Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Victor DeLorenzo - is documented on the 40th-anniversary Deluxe Edition of Violent Femmes, which features the original 1983 album, demos from the sessions that produced it and live recordings from ’81 (Sept. 12 and Dec. 8) and Jan 26, 1983, in their Wisconsin hometown and New York City, respectively.
These tracks are revelatory, as the band morphs from awkward adolescents trying to find themselves into self-assured musicians comfortable with their twitchy selves in just 16 months.
So by the time Violent Femmes entered the studio to make Violent Femmes, even their demos - including album and non-album cuts - were fully formed. As such, “Please Do Not Go,” “Girl Trouble,” “Waiting for the Bus” and others demonstrate how little studio trickery went into creating the Femmes’ skittish soundtrack.
Grade card: Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (Deluxe Edition) - B+

Music Review: Violent Femmes debut, a cult favorite, turns 40 with an expanded new edition
“Violent Femmes (Deluxe Edition),” out Friday, is a competent remaster and a brilliantly curated collection of artifacts, with more than a dozen demos, B-sides and live performances.
By JIM POLLOCK Associated Press In 1983, Milwaukee trio Violent Femmes released their self-titled debut, an album that would quickly enter the college-rock pantheon for its spirited acoustic punk. Forty years later, Craft Recordings has released a deluxe edition of the record, in which the cult band turns back the clock to a moment of intense creative output. “Violent Femmes (Deluxe Edition),”…

Song Review(s): Violent Femmes - “Blister on the Sun” and “Please Do Not Go” (Demos) and “Country Death Song” and “Gone Daddy Gone/I Just Wanna Make Love to You” (Live, Sept. 12, 1981)
The Violent Femmes of 1981 were young, raw and hungry.
But mostly raw.
The original trio of guitarist Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Victor DeLorenzo released two demos (“Blister on the Sun” and “Please Do Not Go”) and a pair of live tracks (“Country Death Song” and “Gone Daddy Gone/I Just Wanna Make Love to You”) captured Sept. 12, 1981, at a hometown gig in Milwaukee to preview the Dec. 1 release of Violent Femmes Deluxe Edition, marking the 40th anniversary of their 1983 self-titled debut.
youtube
In the studio, Gano, Ritchie and DeLorenzo sound tentative, still searching for what would become their final sound. They’re already Violent and totally Femme, but not yet what would pass for polished in their twitchy little world of acoustic guitar, bass and brushed drums. On stage, however, they are more comfortable, mixing the morbid humor of “Country Death Song” with the pseudo seriousness of “Gone Daddy Gone/I Just Wanna Make Love to You.”
youtube
“How many people here went to high school?,” Gano asks at the ’81 gig, illustrating just how young, raw and hungry the band and its early partisans were in the beginning.
youtube
What the band lacked in polish and depth; however, it made up for with enthusiasm and a unique, twisted outlook on life and music. Still do, too.
Grade card: Violent Femmes - “Blister on the Sun” and “Please Do Not Go” (Demos) and “Country Death Song” and “Gone Daddy Gone/I Just Wanna Make Love to You” (Live - 9/12/81) - C+ (Demos)/B+ (Live cuts)
