The New Life

Martin had always been the quiet, unassuming type. A software engineer by trade, his days were spent coding, sipping black coffee, and meticulously planning every moment of his life. His evenings were reserved for gaming marathons, vinyl record sessions, or quietly nurturing his bonsai tree. Moving into a small flat on the outskirts of Birmingham was supposed to be a practical step, a chance to save money and focus on work.

The flat wasn’t much, but Martin liked its simplicity. The only peculiar thing was the landlord, a man he had never met. The lease was finalized online, and the key had been left in a lockbox. Every question Martin emailed received curt, almost cryptic replies signed simply, “J.”

One late night, after staying up to debug an infuriating piece of code, Martin collapsed into bed, still wearing his plain grey hoodie and jeans. He drifted off immediately, his laptop humming softly on his desk.

When he woke, his world had changed.

The first thing he noticed was the weight on his chest. Groggily, Martin looked down and saw a thick, gleaming gold chain resting against a black Nike tracksuit. The outfit was completed by a black puffer jacket and a pair of pristine white Nike TNs on his feet.

Panicking, Martin stumbled out of bed and caught his reflection in the mirror. His neatly combed hair was gone, replaced by a sharp buzz cut. His room, once spotless, was a wreck—empty takeaway containers, cans of lager, and scraps of paper were strewn everywhere. His laptop was missing, replaced by a battered Bluetooth speaker blaring grime music at low volume.

His heart racing, Martin snatched his phone off the bedside table, only to find it completely wiped. All his apps, contacts, and files were gone. The only thing left was a single number saved under the name “J.”

Trembling, he pressed the call button.

“’Bout bloody time,” a deep, gravelly voice answered on the first ring. “Come ‘round the back o’ the block. We need a word.”

“Who are you? What’s going on?” Martin stammered.

“Quit yappin’ and get yer arse down here, mate.” The call ended abruptly.

Martin didn’t know why, but he felt compelled to obey. Pulling on the puffer jacket, he stepped into the cold evening air and walked around the back of the building.

There, leaning casually against the wall, was a man in a black puffer jacket and trackies. He was smoking a cigarette, his buzzed head gleaming in the faint glow of the streetlight. His posture was relaxed, but something about him radiated authority.

“’Ere he is,” the man said with a smirk, exhaling a cloud of smoke. “Sleep well, bruv?”

Martin stared. “Are you… J?”

“That’s what they call me,” the man said, tapping ash off his cigarette. “So, what d’ya think of yer new look?”

“I hate it!” Martin snapped. “What is this? I didn’t ask for this. I don’t want this!”

Jay laughed, his voice rough and mocking. “Come off it, lad. Don’t act like you’re not buzzin’. I’ve seen yer socials, seen all them scally pages you follow. Don’t lie to me.”

Martin’s cheeks flushed. He had spent hours scrolling through photos of lads in tracksuits, admiring their swagger and confidence. But that didn’t mean he wanted to be one.

“This isn’t me,” he insisted, backing away.

Jay took a slow drag of his cigarette and stepped closer. His voice dropped to a low, commanding tone. “Stop pretendin’, mate. This is who you’ve always wanted to be. Now, take a drag o’ this cig and let it sink in.”

“I don’t smoke,” Martin mumbled.

Jay raised an eyebrow, his smirk widening. “Didn’t ask if you did, did I? Now, stop bein’ soft and take it.”

Martin hesitated, but Jay’s imposing presence was too much. Slowly, he took the cigarette. He brought it to his lips, inhaling deeply. The smoke burned his throat, making him cough, but as he exhaled, everything began to shift.

A strange warmth spread through his body. His muscles tensed and grew, filling out the tracksuit. His back straightened, and his posture shifted to one of casual confidence.

Jay chuckled, clapping Martin on the shoulder. “There ya go, lad. Told ya it’d suit ya.”

Over the next few days, Martin’s life unraveled completely. He quit his office job without a second thought. “Desk jobs are for nerds,” he scoffed when Jay asked him about it. Instead, he took up a hard labor gig at a nearby warehouse. The pay was awful, but Martin didn’t care. He liked the physicality of it, the way it made him feel strong and capable.

Every night, Jay would knock on his door, and they’d head out together. They’d hang around the estate or outside the local chippy, blasting grime music and chatting with Jay’s mates. At first, Martin felt out of place, but as the nights went on, he began to embrace it.

He started rolling cigarettes with ease, perfecting his swagger, and adjusting his tracksuit to show off his gold chain. He even picked up a thick Brummie slang, finding himself talking more like Jay and less like his old, nerdy self.

His flat became a reflection of his new life—messy, lively, and filled with the sound of music and laughter. The Martin who once prided himself on his orderliness and ambition was gone.

One evening, as they leaned against a wall under a dim streetlight, Jay passed him another cigarette.

“Told ya, lad,” Jay said with a smirk. “This is where you belong.”

Martin lit the cigarette, exhaling a plume of smoke as he nodded. His gold chain glinted in the light, and his buzzed head shone faintly. “Yeah,” he said with a cocky grin. “You were right, mate.”

The transformation was complete. The quiet, bookish Martin was no more. In his place stood a confident scally lad, unbothered and unapologetic.

Der Abgrund Tour 2023- Withered w/ Bathe & Omenkiller: Live at Grantski Records

Withered is a death/doom/black/sludge metal band from Atlanta, Georgia that formed as a band back in 2003. The band consists of founding member Mike Thompson (guitars/vocals), Rafay Nabeel (bass), Dan Caydeo (guitars/vocals), and Beau Brandon (drums). They are signed to the French label Season of Mist and have released five (5) LPs, one (1) live DVD, and one (1) single. Their latest LP, Verloren, was reviewed on Concerthopper by Richard Davenport and you can check it out by following this link. Verloren is a fantastic album from start to finish and is one of the records that I play regularly from my collection. Mike Thompson has been the force behind keeping Withered steady since their inception in 2003. As the founding member, you can sense the passion Mike has for his fans, his fellow bandmates, and their music.

Withered recently embarked on a tour that started May 18th in New Orleans, LA. and will conclude on June 4th at the Brickyard in Knoxville, TN. I was thrilled to see that Grantski Records was able to snag a date between their Columbus, GA., and Charleston, S.C. dates. There are some amazing and significant metal bands from Atlanta not named Mastodon that also deserve recognition based on the scope of their work. Withered is one of those bands. I recommend checking out Withered any time they are playing near you, but only if you want your face melted off. From start to finish, Withered played a variety of crushing and brutal songs from their intense discography. At one point someone from the crowd yelled, “Your drummer is badass!”. Mike smiled and replied, “Yeah, we know”. That person is correct because Beau Brandon has been blasting beats for Withered since 2007 while impressing their fans with his skills ever since.

Bathe is a noisecore/mathcore/doom/sludge metal band from Columbia, South Carolina that formed as a band in 2014. The band consists of Jon Scott (bass), Alex Strickland (vocals), Paul Huff (guitars), and David Scott (drums). The band has released one (1) LP, one (1) single, and two (2) EPs. This would be my first time checking out Bathe perform, and I was excited to see what they were bringing to the table. When they were setting up and placing a pulpit on the stage, I knew this was about to be a heavy ride. They gained a new fan and I hope to catch them on stage again soon.

Omenkiller, best known for delivering some heavy ‘Savannah Beatdowns’, is a four-piece deathcore band that hails from none other than Savannah, GA. The band consists of Ben (vocals), Chris (bass), Jace (drums), and Lily (guitar). Omenkiller might have kicked off this evening’s festivities, but do not let that fool you at all. Omenkiller put on a brutal performance that had everyone in Grantski’s head banging and singing along to their set.

ALBUM OF THE MONTH: DOOR IN THE WATER https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/album/door-in-the-water-25th-anniversary-expanded-edition …This is the recording that put me on the map; my first full-length album—then described as “a New Wave concept album.” Topically, it was inspired by a San Francisco fellowship of friends. The LP was loosely formatted after “concept albums” like PET SOUNDS (Beach Boys), LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY (Genesis), and the PRESERVATION ACT series by The Kinks. It was started in San Francisco and finished in the hilly, hipster city of Knoxville TN at a studio that The Jacksons used for a rehearsal space (they let me use their Yamaha DX7 keyboards). This was released in 1985, the record label I was signed to did near-to-nothing to promote it nor did they provide tour support. However, who knew this record would reach people across the oceans and “open doors” I couldn’t foresee? For that I am grateful.

DOOR IN THE WATER was remastered in 2010 by Scott Francis w/bonus material on the download version + live takes of my band October w/Ron Davis, Chris Haggerty, Bridget Purifoy, Anna Valdez, and Victor Valverde. Mae Sign With Equal Vision Records

Mae have signed with Equal Vision Records. They plan to release new music next year and have released limited vinyl variants of Destination:Beautiful. Indie Rock duo Mae is ready for the next chapter. The Pretenders - 'I Think About You Daily' Video + Tour

The Pretenders have announced a very special US headline tour, set to visit a series of intimate venues across the country beginning August 16 at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom and then continuing into early October. The atypical headline run heralds the eagerly awaited arrival of the Pretenders’ forthcoming new studio album, Relentless, arriving via Rhino Records on Friday, September 15. Pre-orders – including digital download, baby pink vinyl, black vinyl, and CD – are available now.

Produced by multiple Grammy Award-nominee David Wrench (Courtney Barnett, David Byrne) at the famed Battery Studios in Willesden, Northwest London, Relentless marks the second consecutive full-length songwriting collaboration by founder Chrissie Hynde and Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne following 2020’s acclaimed Hate For Sale. The album – which marks the band’s return to Warner Music Group after more than two decades having first been signed to Sire Records in America by the legendary Seymour Stein – includes such recently released singles as “Let The Sun Come In“ and the beautiful closing track, “I Think About You Daily,” the latter featuring composer Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead, The Smile), who provides the string arrangement and conducted the 12 Ensemble for the recording. Hailed by Stereogum as a “grand…regretful ballad,” “I Think About You Daily” is joined by a deeply moving official video, streaming now on YouTube.

The Pretenders will further introduce Relentless by joining Guns N’ Roses as a special guest on their upcoming North American stadium tour. The dates get underway August 11 at Hershey, PA’s Hersheypark Stadium before making stops at such historic parks as East Rutherford, NJ’s MetLife Stadium (August 15), Pittsburgh, PA’s PNC Park at North Shore (August 18), Boston, MA’s Fenway Park (August 21), Chicago, IL’s Wrigley Field (August 24), Toronto, ON’s Rogers Centre (September 3), and St. Louis, MO’s Busch Stadium (September 9). In addition, the Pretenders will make a top-billed festival appearance as direct support to Foo Fighters at the upcoming Ohana Festival, curated by Eddie Vedder and set for October 1 at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, CA. DOOR IN THE WATER (ALBUM OF THE WEEK) https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/album/door-in-the-water-25th-anniversary-expanded-edition …This record put me on the map; my first full-length album—then described as “a New Wave concept album.” Topically, the songs were inspired by a San Francisco fellowship of friends. The LP was loosely formatted after “concept albums” like PET SOUNDS (Beach Boys), LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY (Genesis), and the PRESERVATION ACT series by The Kinks. It was mostly recorded in the hilly, hipster city of Knoxville TN at a studio that The Jacksons used for a rehearsal space (they let me use their Yamaha DX7 keyboards). The record label I was signed to did near-nothing to promote it nor did they offer tour support. Over the years, however, who knew this record would reach people across the oceans and “open doors” I couldn’t foresee?

DOOR IN THE WATER was remastered by Scott Francis w/bonus material on the download version + live takes of my band October w/Ron Davis, Chris Haggerty, Bridget Purifoy, Anna Valdez, and Victor Valverde.
