DROP THE FIC OR IM COMING FOR YOUR KNEECAPS
ALRIGHT OK BUT I NEED IT TO BE KNOWN THAT I HAVENT WRITTEN ANYTHING SERIOUSLY SINCE HIGHSCHOOL OK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Something is after me. I know it is, I’ve seen it. It looks like a man, but I know that it’s not. It…. It’s face is like a mockery of something human- like- like if you asked someone who has never seen a human to draw or model a person’s face, their smile. No… I don’t think any human would be able to get it that wrong.”
“And I’m not crazy, alright? God, y’all probably get that a lot here, don’t you? You people specialize in crazy. Not that I’m anyone to judge anymore, given the shit I went through before coming out here. I didn’t even know a place like this existed outside the Usher Foundation. I just…there’s some weird, crazy shit out there I guess, and when I heard about y’all, I figured I should probably pay a visit. At least let someone know before I die.”
“I know I’m gonna die.”
“I suppose I should start from the beginning. My name is Joshua Nelson, I’m originally from the States–Memphis Tennessee. Now, if there’s one thing you should know about Memphis, it’s that nobody in their right mind should EVER move there on their own accord, ‘cause you’ll either get mugged or stalked or both. I was born and raised there, so I never really got the choice during the formative years of my life. I’ve learned to live with it, though.”
“I worked retail in a gas station before…well, everything. It was a shithole. The kind of building where, no matter how hard you scrubbed and no matter how much bleach you used, the stains and smell of smoke would never leave. Instead just…mingled with the citrus of the chemicals. It paid the bills, though, and I was never witness to a robbery, so I couldn’t complain too much. The customers were docile and if I noticed anyone shoplifting, I kept it to myself. I wasn’t getting paid enough to give a damn.”
“We had regulars that would come in on a schedule and regulars that wouldn’t. People who were just passing through the city or visiting family or friends. You get all types in that kinda place, and if you’re placid enough to any asshole who’s having a bad day, everyone gets along just fine. There were a couple of regulars who were friendly enough, though, that I remember their names. Miss Kelly was an older woman, short and heavyset–she was one of the friendlier ones. We’ve got a lot of talkers in the south and boy did she make sure I knew every exact reason for what her kids were getting up to, or what was going on in a reality show she was hooked on at the time.”
“George Michael, a thin man in his 40s, maybe, always came in whenever he needed a new pack of cigarettes, I think he was a chain-smoker, cause he was in there a lot.”
“And then…then there was Hunter. Now Hunter was a younger man, maybe college age. A little older than that? Poor bastard was hooked on something, that much anyone could tell. He was gaunt, a little twitchy, you know, telltale signs of drug abuse. I could never tell what specifically he was on, but then again, it was never my business to know. I treated him the same as every other customer, we all knew he wasn’t gonna cause any harm, he usually came in for food, chips and hotdogs and stuff and he never caused a fuss.”
“I think… I think Hunter is dead.”
“One day he came in, I think it was a Wednesday or something cause it was slow that afternoon, and he burst through the door. Well–maybe not burst, but he came in the building like he was racing to get indoors first before someone else. The guy was usually jittery and, I’ll admit, a little shifty usually, but this was full blown paranoia. It startled me at first, his intensity, and he made a b-line towards the back of the store and ducked behind one of the shelves. Maybe not duck completely like ducking for cover, but it was obvious he was hiding. It almost made me expect the police or some drug lord to come storming through the door, but nobody else came.”
“Hunter stayed pacing in the building for a good 20 or 30 minutes, periodically lifting his head to crane his neck and peer out the window or the glass of the door. I checked once or twice as well, but if someone was out there, I didn’t see them. Eventually the guy calmed down enough to buy something and when he approached the counter with his bag of Doritos he looked almost like he was going to be sick.”
“I asked him if everything was alright, but he just shook his head and left.”
“I didn’t see him again for another week or two after that. Obviously I assumed the worst. I theorized that someone was after him and when he didn’t show up when he usually did it was more than enough to confirm my suspicions. Be it cops or some random person on the street, I couldn’t decide which fate would be worse, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel for the guy at least a little bit.”
“Hunter was almost completely out of my mind when I saw him again. I was surprised. By all accounts, it didn’t look like anything had changed about him. Maybe aside from the fact that his posture was way better than it usually was when I saw him, but other than that, nothing was out of the ordinary.”
“Business went on as usual and when he came up to the till with a liter of coke, I offered him a ‘Welcome Back’ and rang him up.”
“When I turned back to him, he was smiling. For some reason it was like a pit opened in the bottom of my stomach. I couldn’t understand why, though. It looked like Hunter–patchy, unkempt stubble, greasy hair, thin face, sunken eyes. His appearance had never bothered me before, so I was struck with confusion that mixed in with the undefinable, sudden sense of dread.”
“‘Thank you,’ he said as I handed him his change. And he walked out the door. It sounded like Hunter, too.”
“Hunter returned the next day, and the next. Each time he was polite and quiet, and each time he smiled when I rang him up. I counted his teeth. They were straight and flat. When I counted mine in the mirror when I smiled, I saw 17 or 18. Hunter’s counted 24.”
“Maybe he has a dental problem that I didn’t notice until now, I told myself. Human bodies are weird. Sometimes you have more teeth than usual.”
“The fourth day he came in a row, I saw his eyes and his pupils were…swollen, is the only way I can describe them. I know what people’s eyes look like when they’re high. This was not that. It was like they almost swallowed up his irises completely, and they were dull. Dull in the sense that the fluorescents overhead did nothing to cast any reflections onto them. It made me want to writhe and squirm whenever he looked at me.”
“I called in sick the fifth day. I knew Hunter would be back in that gas station to see me. I knew it was to see me. And I knew that thing. That..whatever it was. It wasn’t Hunter.”
“I guess a part of me was always dreading that day. I had always heard stories about people being stalked from friends of friends. It was only a matter of time before it happened to me, right?”
“I saw Hunter at the grocery store the next day, posture straight and face split open into that smile with too many teeth. I didn’t have the mind to be polite. I turned completely around and walked the other way, trying to fool myself thinking that he hadn’t seen me. I kept a pocket knife on me after that encounter. I probably should have been before, but hindsight is always 20/20.”
“Each time I saw him after that, it was worse. On the street to my apartment, his eyes were too wide and his grinning mouth was slightly agape. A crude facsimile of delight as I rushed past him. I stopped going into work when I started to spot him everywhere I went. Every destination no matter how far or random, he was there, grinning at me. He knew where I lived, that I had no doubt. So I went to a friend’s one night hoping to throw him off. Maybe I could move out and lose him. Lord knows I didn’t have the money to break my lease early, but I was desperate.”
“My friend suggested I call the police, but for some reason I was convinced that wouldn’t help. Cops usually only made things worse in that town, and I had a sinking feeling going that route would only waste my time.”
“The final straw was the second night I was crashing on my friend’s couch. I was exhausted, the past few weeks spent sleepless and paranoid and I was ready to finally pass out when I heard a light, rhythmic tapping on the window behind my head.”
“It’s just the wind, I thought to myself. A tree branch or something scraping against the glass. The exhaustion was completely gone, my pounding heart and pumping adrenaline overpowering any lame excuse that I would be stupid enough to be reassured by.”
“I didn’t move from where I lay. Tap. Tap. Tap. Came through the window once again.”
“I don’t know why I laid there for so long, unmoving, convinced that if I didn’t turn around, whatever it was outside would lose interest and leave. I really, really wanted it to leave.”
“I lay still for what felt like hours, every muscle in my body wound up and tense and ready to leap into action at any given opportunity. I was praying the opportunity would never come.”
“I don’t know how long it was when the tapping ceased, but it was long before I finally managed to relax. It seemed like my strategy worked. What an idiotic thing to think. Like I was a child hiding from an imaginary monster in the dark. Like the logic of not giving a stalker any attention so it would go away was sound. No. I think it was that false hope that landed me in this situation.”
“Because when that tapping came again, I wasn’t prepared to turn around. But I did. I turned around and what I saw in the darkness through that glass was… I don’t know what it was. I know it had eyes and teeth. It was grinning, but its teeth stretched well beyond what would be the borders of its face. God, I couldn’t see its face. I knew it was Hunter, though. It had those same lightless eyes that stared back at me every time I closed my own. Dead and dark and dull and staring at me–eating at me, wide and gleeful and spilling into the shadow that I could only assume was a part of the creature, itself. Its form took up nearly the entirety of the window, blocking the outside world. It didn’t move.”
“I screamed. I screamed and closed the curtains and I hid. This woke my friend of course, and she came stumbling out of her room, looking bleary but alert. I tried to signal to her not to go to the window or do anything or to call the police. Thankfully she got the message and the cops were there within the hour.”
“They didn’t find anything. Or anyone, for that matter. I left out the…the monster bit, because I assumed it might land me somewhere I really didn’t want to go.”
“They were about as helpful as I thought they would be. Told me to call them again if I noticed any suspicious activity.”
“I booked my flight here that very night. I wasn’t going to stay in that goddamn city with whatever the HELL that thing was. I don’t want to end up like Hunter. I don’t want it to wear my skin.”
“It will, though. I know it will and it scares me more than anything in the world. And I know I can’t escape it, either.”
“It followed me here. I saw it. It was still grinning at me and it was still. Wearing. Hunter’s. Skin. The shadow that was cast over it made it so I could only see the whites of it’s eyes....its teeth.”
“I don’t want to die.”
Lost Parcels
On September 5th, 1996, FedEx Flight 1406 caught fire on its way to Boston. The pilot managed to land the plane safely at Stewart International Airport, and its crew evacuated with minimal injuries, but the cargo was completely destroyed. Insurance companies later pegged the ashes as having an estimated value of $300 million. I remember this accident well, as it happened right around the time I moved to Memphis, where the flight had originated. For some reason, this particular disaster both horrified and fascinated me. I kept focusing not on the details of the fire itself but rather on the aggregate tragedy of all those burnt packages, which had been entrusted to the carrier by hundreds of customers. I fretted obsessively about all that had been lost ... gifts, prototypes, medicines, toys, samples, books, business documents, letters, mementos, photographs, artworks, heirlooms, et cetera. Of course, many of these items had been insured, in one form or another. But what of the things which had been irreplaceable? Each material loss was accompanied by more amorphous deficits: temporal, emotional, cultural.
When I find myself frustrated by shipping delays or an unexpected lapse in communication, I'll sometimes think back to the era of wooden ships, and then I'll be grateful once more for the relative speed and certainty of modern logistics. Back in those days, long before telephones or internet or even transoceanic telegraph cables, delivering mail was an iffy business. A letter might take months to arrive, if it arrived at all. I can't even imagine the number of critical dispatches that were lost to storms, fires, reefs, piracy. How many hearts were broken by unanswered proposals, how many enterprises were hamstrung by missing reports?
The package that never arrives still changes the course of history. Victory may be thwarted by a tardy bulletin, a detained courier might prove just as deadly as a fusillade. Absences are just as consequential as arrivals.
As I look down the road towards my own mortality and that of my loved ones, I spend more and more time dwelling on the subject of loss. Strangely enough, it's not the end of any human life (including my own) that keeps me tossing and turning at night. The nine days I spent at the burning ghats of Varanasi, where I witnessed dozens of open-air cremations, gave me a certain serenity about death, and I accept its inevitability in the way that I accept supernovae and grey hair and cancelled sitcoms. No ... what bothers me is the failed transmission, the loss of important information. An undelivered letter or ruined document pains me much more deeply than the neutral and necessary fact of death itself.
I worry about the coming digital dark age. Our overreliance on the internet will soon show its terrible cost. Media that has been stored in online vaults and platforms will someday vanish. After all, none of it is permanent: formats become obsolete, hardware becomes irreplaceable or unrepairable, software is discontinued, codecs are deprecated, hard drives fail, networks fall victim to viruses or cyberterrorism. We trust the evidence of our lives to media conglomerates, whose data servers are not public utilities but rather corporate holdings. When a social platform flames out, as all eventually must, it takes with it the millions of social transactions and images that people contributed. Unless you possess a physical print of a photograph, its longevity cannot be assured. Even the "ownership" of an image is somewhat open to legal interpretation, depending on the fine print of any user agreements you may have signed.
It's astonishing to realize just how easily history can be lost to indifference, executive myopia, or deliberate eradication. Nearly three-fifths of Georges Méliès' cinematic oeuvre was melted down for its celluloid and silver content by the French Army in World War I. For decades, television networks would recycle tapes of outdated programs, figuring that they had no value beyond the air date. MTV News recently deleted its entire journalistic archive, tossing twenty years of reportage into the dustbin. The firebombing of Dresden took out Courbet's masterpiece “The Stone Breakers”, vandals defaced Cherokee petroglyphs in Georgia. The vault fire at Universal Studios incinerated the original masters and creative materials of countless musical artists. Both the ancient library of Alexandria and the Jaffna Public Library of Sri Lanka were lost to acts of political arson. Nazis torched some 25,000 books and artworks of the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf. Book burning occurs often enough that there's even a word for this barbarity: biblioclasm.
On September 2nd, 2018, a fire started in The National Museum of Brazil. The cause is uncertain, perhaps faulty electrical wiring ... or, as has been suggested by the Cultural Minister, an errant sky lantern landing on the roof. Regardless of its origin, though, the outcome was catastrophic: within a few hours of the initial spark some 20 million cultural artifacts were reduced to cinders. Over 90% of the collection was lost forever. The tragedy is compounded when we see what went up in smoke: rare recordings of extinct indigenous languages, unique relics, maps, papers, photos, negatives, fossils, a Pompeiian fresco that had survived the eruption of Vesuvius, artworks, vessels, the only preserved evidence of several vanished tribes. The fire claimed not only objects, but entire histories. It's as if those people had never existed; their records have been completely wiped out.
Cargo planes are crashing around us, figuratively speaking, every day. Libraries are always on fire. Civilizations smolder in the skulls of madmen, poets wither in nursing homes, geniuses die unheralded. So many essential missives never reach their destination.
Everywhere, losses will pile upon losses. There will be more wars, wildfires, famines, revolutions, genocides, climate-related crises, regimes that place a special emphasis on de-education and revisionism. We march closer every day towards the horizon of some terrible cataclysm, a holocaust not of the flesh but of the human intellect. I fear most the obliteration of art, history, literature. I fear the zealous erasure of ideas or data or even entire language systems. Religion has been weaponizing ignorance for millennia, and it shows no signs of backing down now. Scientific rigor will again fall to suspicion, reason will be crushed beneath dogma, just as it was during the Middle Ages. Who will fight to preserve knowledge in a world so determined to eradicate it?
Like everybody, I will have to make peace with the fleeting nature of all things and learn to let go of my attachments ... either by adopting some Buddhism-adjacent spiritual practice or finding a simpler form of surrender. But such equanimity does not come easily to me. As an artist, all of my deepest fears center around the loss of my art. I'm no longer scared of dying, but I'm definitely terrified of disappearing. I fear that the tatters of my "estate" will be considered worthless, that my outputs will gradually disappear and be left unseen, that my books will collect dust and my photographs will be deleted and my paintings will end up in landfills, that my life's work will have amounted to nothing of value. I will have spent my entire existence trying to communicate something urgent, to convey some cosmic or divine message that I did not fully understand myself, and despite my best efforts it may all have come to naught.
But I constantly have to remind myself: it's not about me or my name, it's about faithfully delivering what's been put in my hands. I need to forget about fame or riches or a glamorous lifestyle, forget about popularity, followers, reviews, accolades, the elusive metrics of success. I need to give up on the gold stars and just deliver the goddamned package.
Maybe it doesn't matter, anyway. Perhaps each loss is itself a sort of message. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of existence that we must learn to accept is its ephemerality. Our achievements and stories and plans are beautiful in the way of fireworks ... just glittering bursts in a darkened sky, there and gone, existing for only a moment, perceived and then quickly forgotten, appearing only as flashes in an unceasing barrage of stimuli, patterns opening and falling away, so brief and lovely to behold.
On a pretty spring day last year, I took a walk to one of our town's two cemeteries. I generally like to do this around sunset, as the slanting rays bestow a favorable glow upon the details of our little town. On this particular afternoon, memorable only for its lambency and quietude, the graves were painted with phlox and clover. Patches of pink and purple lay against the green, bright as Impressionist brushstrokes. It was the time for violets, time for tulips, jonquils trumpeting the arrival of spring ... all those frilly little heralds standing in their beds and shouting, exultant, blooming for only an instant before browning and drooping into the dirt. I sat on a sawed-off stump and looked towards the setting sun. Crane flies rose and fell like drunkards among the bluets. Shining strands of spider silk hung from spikes of deadnettle, like little telephone wires drooping from point to point.
From the edge of the cemetery rose thin clouds of smoke ... greyish-white, tinged with a dull yellow. Somebody had clear-cut the small plot of undeveloped greenbelt abutting the southwestern side of the boneyard and set fire to the timber. The pocket forest that had stood there wasn't very large, only about the size of two average plots, but it had effectively screened the prettiest part of the landscape from the nearby cluster of houses, and helped create a pleasing sense of pastoral isolation. Now all that remained was two giant piles of charred debris. Soon there would be a pair of hastily built duplexes, and small domestic narratives would unfold over what was once a woodland. Children would open Christmas presents on a rug. Couples would argue over dirty dishes. There would be dinners, fights, makeups, homework, hobbies, clandestine sex, experiments with drugs, discoveries, reunions, vigils.
Until now, the woods had sheltered a family of deer. I watched sadly as the doe and her two yearlings huddled in the greensward, regarding the smoking space that had been their home. The sprawling forest to the east is privately owned ... and judging from the frequent rifle shots I've heard it's probably prime hunting ground. The deer will come and go, leaving only bones to poke from the buckthorn. The duplexes will surrender someday to ivy and gravity, and the gravestones will be eroded to nameless nubs ... but by then the human narratives that they represented will have been long gone anyway.
And that's what struck me most on that visit to the cemetery ... I wondered what histories had also been interred there. What words had been left unsaid, what songs stayed unrecorded, what codes had been forgotten, what news remained undelivered? Each of these people existed for such a short span of time, barely a blip on the geological clock, blazing into view like a meteor only to vanish again. And now they were occulted underground, these message-bearers ... attended only by worms and beetles, rendered still and silent by the impartial mechanisms of death, their good works and memories crumbling into dust, their memorabilia yielding to time and neglect and the merciless elements ... each corpse a captured envoy, a foiled Hermes, each voyager holding something precious in their mouth: a clue, a key, a parcel.
Signs You Might Have a Pest Infestation and What to Do Next
Pest infestations can cause significant damage to your property, affect your health, and disrupt your daily life. Whether you're in West Memphis, TN, Marion, AR, Wynne, AR, Jonesboro, AR, or Paragould, AR, recognizing the early signs of a pest problem is crucial for effective control. At Acme Pest Management, we’re here to help you identify these issues and take the necessary steps to resolve them.
Common Signs of a Pest Infestation
Here are some common indicators that pests may have invaded your home or business:
Droppings and Urine Stains
Rodents and cockroaches often leave droppings in hidden areas like cupboards, basements, and under appliances. If you spot these, it’s time to act.
Unusual Noises
Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls, ceilings, or attics are often signs of rodents or wildlife. These sounds are usually more noticeable at night.
Damage to Property
Gnawed wires, chewed wood, or shredded paper can indicate rats, mice, or termites. Look for small holes in walls or furniture as well.
Grease Marks or Tracks
Rodents often leave greasy trails along walls, floors, or baseboards as they move through your home.
Visible Pests
Seeing pests like ants, roaches, or spiders during the day could indicate a larger infestation. Pests are often nocturnal, so daytime sightings are a red flag.
Unpleasant Odors
A persistent, foul odor may come from rodent urine, roach droppings, or a decaying pest.
Structural Damage
Termites can cause buckling wood, swollen floors, or hollow-sounding walls. Don’t ignore these signs of serious damage.
Pest Nests
Rodents and insects build nests in secluded areas. Check storage spaces, attics, and basements for unusual clusters of debris or material.
Increased Pest Activity Outside
An influx of pests near windows, doors, or garbage areas could mean they’re about to invade.
Health Problems
Unexplained allergies, asthma, or itchy bites could point to a pest infestation.
What to Do Next
If you notice any of these signs, it’s essential to act quickly. Here's what you should do:
Identify the Pest
Determine the type of pest you’re dealing with. This helps decide the best course of action. Acme Pest Management provides expert identification services for pests in West Memphis, TN, Marion, AR, Wynne, AR, Jonesboro, AR, and Paragould, AR.
Remove Attractants
Eliminate food, water, and shelter sources. Store food in sealed containers, fix leaks, and declutter your home.
Seal Entry Points
Inspect your home for gaps, cracks, or holes where pests might enter. Seal these areas with caulk, steel wool, or other materials.
Use Traps or Baits (With Caution)
For minor infestations, traps and bait stations can be effective. However, improper use may worsen the problem or pose risks to pets and children.
How Can You Avoid Issues With Auto Transport Services in Arkansas?
Tumblr media
Relocating to a new state means moving more than just your household items. Finding reliable auto transport helps safely relocate your vehicles too. But entrusting your car or truck to ship out of state also stirs anxiety. Horror stories of damaged rides and shady brokers reinforce fears around long-distance auto shipping calamities.
However, arming yourself with key guidance around reviews, insurance, and contracts sets you up for smooth success using professional Car Shipping Services in Georgia.
Do Your Homework
The sheer number of car shipping companies and brokers to sift through feels overwhelming initially. Start by gathering quotes from a mix of large nationwide carriers and smaller regional outfitters highly familiar with popular routes like Dallas to Little Rock or Atlanta to Memphis.
Compare rates while reading recent customer feedback plus accreditations from transport associations like the Better Business Bureau. Identify front runners meeting benchmarks around experience, ethics, and equipment handling your make/model locally or regionally vs generic mass transit haulers.
Ask Questions
Reach out to a few top contenders to clarify specifics around insurance, tracking visibility, and support infrastructure. What coverage applies for comprehensive damage or loss? Can you track vehicles in real-time for peace of mind?
Who manages issues like weather delays or routing redirects? Regional companies with local drivers provide hands-on assistance versus big carriers that broker out the legs of the relay.
Consider it a telling sign if sales reps dodge questions or defer solving future issues altogether. Reputable Auto Transport Services Arkansas stands behind their system’s ability to deliver goods intact and on time.
Mind the Fine Print
While still comparing bids, read contract fine print details thoroughly too. Many carriers lure you in with lowball quotes that spike exponentially after “mandatory” fees for everything from fuel to insurance get tacked on.
Ensure price estimates of auto shipping services in Alabama are all-inclusive with guaranteed pickup dates in writing. Also, clarify how carriers define acceptable vehicle conditions and report damage for claims processing.
You want crystal clarity that any existing wear and tear gets noted pre-transit without dispute later. If proposed terms seem vague or contracts copy/paste generic without personalization, they likely exemplify equally impersonal transport handling.
Wrap Up
Moving vehicles long distance ratchets anxiety without the right protections in place. Select auto transport services vetting experience, ethics, and equipment to handle precious cargo safely.
The established regional carriers familiar with routes in/out of AR provide white glove service and accountability from quote to delivery. The Cross Country Car Transport fits the bill scoring five-star reviews for personalized handling guaranteed in writing. Their family-owned values shine by treating your vehicles like their own.
Chairman's Corner - 2024 Tower Times Magazine Volume 1
What a busy fall this has been, time has flown by since the NATE Summer Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. We are now in the final stages of preparing for NATE UNITE 2024, in Memphis, Tennessee. I am very excited about the plans for NATE UNITE 2024. The Trade Show Committee is continually making improvements and we are encouraged by the early registrations indicating this may be one of our biggest and best shows yet.
November was a busy month with our C-Suite tour to AT&T in Dallas, Texas, down to Houston, Texas, to meet Crown Castle and then up to Bellevue, Washington to meet T-Mobile. These meetings provide a great venue to discuss and better understand the needs of some of our larger customers and it allows us a forum to present many of the issues that are important to our member companies. Topics ranged from matrix pricing, safety metrics, MSA terms, third-party vetting systems, inflation, worker recruitment and retention issues, all the way to regulatory matters and how we can support each other to provide a continual future flow of work, which will support our industry.
A few days later, we went to Denver, Colorado, where Todd Schlekeway received the Jay Kitchen Leadership Award from Radio Club of America. The Radio Club was formed in 1909 and is the world’s oldest professional society for persons involved in the wireless industry. It was a great night honoring the award winners and was topped off by Marty Cooper as the keynote speaker for the event.
November ended with the election of new officers for the NATE Board of Directors. We had eleven candidates running for the four open positions. I want to congratulate Randy Scott and Aaron Paulette, who will remain on the board. Joel Hightower and Casey Banner will both be joining the Board at NATE UNITE 2024 in February. All the candidates did a great job representing themselves and the wireless industry. I would also like to thank Jimmy Miller, who will be stepping down from the board after 10 years of service to NATE. Although Jimmy will be missed in the board room, he will continue to support NATE’s Legislative & Regulatory Council.
December started with my fifth visit to Washington D.C. in the last two years. This trip was to visit several new Senators, Congressmen, Congresswomen, four FCC Commissioners, and the Department of Labor. The topics with the Senators and Congressional Representatives revolved around the spectrum authority delays and the impact that it is having on our industry and in particular the NATE member companies. Simply put, without spectrum, we do not have anything to build. The next topic was the hold up in D.C. over the allocation of new frequency bands for 6G and beyond.
The United States has continually been a world leader in technology and this delay has put us at least two years behind other countries around the globe.
Our last meeting was the signing of the NATE-OSHA-FCC National Strategic Partnership. This new 5-year agreement will allow NATE to continue leading the charge towards identifying trends in the workplace that would otherwise lead to injuries or fatalities.
Over the last two years, the committees have reviewed over 5,500 individual jobsite audits and categorized tens of thousands of data points collected through the NATE STAR participants and other industry partners. If you are not a NATE STAR participant, I would encourage you to consider it. As Chairman, I am very proud to have signed this agreement on behalf of NATE.
Victor Drouin is the Chairman of NATE and President of Green Mountain Communications, Inc. in Pembroke, New Hampshire. He can be reached at 603-717- 7117 or v.drouin@ greenmtncomm.com.
[ad_1] When I lived in Phoenix in the early 2000s, I was a one-issue voter — at least when it came to the politicians who routinely knocked on doors in our walkable historic district north of downtown.“Do you support light rail?” I asked about the proposed and badly needed transportation alternative. If the answer came back negative, the conversation was over.Light rail was built and thrived. Now in Seattle, I’m a multi-issue voter, especially when it comes to November’s City Council election. Seven of nine seats are open, including several for newcomers.Columnists don’t endorse candidates. That’s the prerogative of The Seattle Times editorial board. But we can ask questions, and I have plenty. For this space, I’ll focus on business and the economy.Are you an activist? Seattle’s politics have been dominated by activists on a timeline that coincides with the downward slope of good government.These are not people who believe in the late John Lewis’ “good trouble.” This hero of the civil rights movement paid in blood as an activist then worked constructively and effectively in his 33 years in Congress. Seattle City Council activists, especially Kshama Sawant, have sullied and trivialized the word at the same time. Most have little interest in effectively serving the needs of taxpaying, law-abiding citizens and are more in the theater of chanting crowds and waving signs. They proved themselves utterly incapable of dealing with the pandemic and crime-related damage inflicted on the city. The “homeless emergency” only became worse on their watch.The trouble is that the activists are well organized, and centrists aren’t. How will you change that? Seattle couldn’t even mount something as ambitious as the 1962 World’s Fair, nor would the City Council want to. That’s a sign of a deeper malaise.Have you ever run a business? Only Sara Nelson ticks off this box. Before her, someone who met a private payroll was Tim Burgess, who served from 2007 to 2017.This would be a broadening experience for several reasons, especially because attracting and retaining jobs and companies has been the primary goal of nearly every local politician I’ve ever covered in other cities.Seattle had the economic wind at its back for so long, politics didn’t seem to matter. Until they did. Then the council majority’s hostility to Amazon, the city’s largest private-sector employer, caused the company to seek a “full equal” HQ2. Some 240 localities offered hefty subsidies for a major taxpayer we got for free. We need a mayor and council with a constructive relationship with all Seattle businesses. Running or even working in the private sector shows what it’s like to deal with the government on the receiving end (or giving end, with taxes). Lost parking spaces can reduce customers, something an activist would never know. Business also exposes one to the costs of retail theft and the danger of violence by thieves being done all over the city. What’s your position on public safety? If you’re not supportive of Mayor Bruce Harrell’s emphasis on this issue, including getting tents off the street and clearing encampments, my door is closing.Readers tell me about being terrified to come downtown. Shop owners and employees talk of being attacked by thieves. The unsheltered are among the largest number of victims of these predators.A Pew Research Center poll in 2021 found that growing numbers of respondents nationally wanted more spending on police in their neighborhoods.At the same time, the beating death of Tyre Nichols by Memphis police officers shows the need for greater training and professionalizing of law enforcement.The huge sums of money spent on homelessness have been ineffective. What’s your plan to bring accountability to social service providers and bring help for those who need it, including those suffering from mental illness and addiction? What’s your Plan B if the King County Regional Homelessness Authority doesn’t get results?How about downtown? The
pandemic, protests and persistent crime deeply wounded the center city, the largest source of business taxes and, at least pre-pandemic, the largest employment hub of Seattle. It’s also home to some 90,000 people. Will you be willing to work with the Downtown Seattle Association to retain existing businesses and attract more? Will you vote to stop criminal activity so employees, customers and arts and sports enthusiasts feel safe? How about the First Avenue streetcar — we need it.And housing? “Affordable housing” is an imprecise term that might mean low-income housing, workforce housing or market-rate units. Seattle needs all three. Will you vote to speed the permitting process, especially on buildings that have been held up for years in some cases?And will you stop considering all landlords as “class enemies,” as Sawant might put it? In some cases, small landlords are being forced to sell their properties because of overregulation while still carrying the burden of mortgages. The result: Their buildings are sold and demolished for high-end houses, taking affordable rentals off the market.Are you from here? It shouldn’t matter. New blood with experience in other cities would be welcome. But so would natives and long-term residents. People who know we held two world’s fairs, have one of the most diversified economies in the nation, enjoy international connections including through a natural deep-water port, and the headquarters of important companies. We need a council that will build on these strengths.My door is open. Step on through. [ad_2] Source link
Elvis Presley’s 1962 Lockheed 1329 JetStar,
For decades, Lockheed’s JetStar was the executive jet of choice for countless A-listers, recognized dignitaries and star-studded celebrities, and this 1962 Lockheed 1329 JetStar is no exception, as it was once owned by the king of rock ‘n’ roll: Elvis Presley. Presley acquired it from OMNI Aircraft Sales Inc. on December 22, 1976 for the princely sum of $840,000.
When Elvis took ownership of this particular JetStar, registered with the FAA as N-20TF, the entertainer was no stranger to luxurious aviation acquisition. He had already amassed a modest fleet, which included a custom Convair 880 named the “Lisa Marie” that went by the call sign of Hound Dog 1, along with a second JetStar identified by its call sign of Hound Dog 2.
With a busy touring schedule, these crafts were needed to transport the singer, his TCB band, backup groups, Col. Tom Parker and the ever-present Memphis Mafia to venues, concerts and appearances all around the country. Elvis kept several pilots on retainer that were ready to fly him to adoring fans at a moment’s notice.
This JetStar is one of several private jets owned by Elvis Presley, with two currently on display at Graceland. Inside, the cabin features wood paneling and red velvet upholstery with gold-finish hardware. There’s seating for nine by way of six plush chairs that swivel and recline, along with a couch. An onboard entertainment system is tucked away in a media cabinet, featuring a television, RCA VCR player and audio cassette player, and headphone ports with audio controls are located at every seat. A galley contains storage and a meal-prep area complete with a Kenmore microwave and beverage dispenser. At the rear is a lavatory along with additional storage and cubby areas.
In the spring of 1977, the jet was sold, later ending up with a Saudi Arabian company. The JetStar was then moved to Roswell International Air Center (ROW) in Roswell, New Mexico, where it’s been stored for decades and resides to this day. The aircraft will require disassembly to be shipped, and coordinating assistance is available. Documentation joining the jet includes a copy of the Aircraft Security Agreement document signed by Elvis Presley, a copy of the Aircraft Bill of Sale and Official FAA Blue Ribbon documents. While the P&W engines and many cockpit components have been removed and no engines or replacement parts will be included with the sale of Elvis’ jet, it serves as an incredible restoration opportunity and a chance to create a unique Elvis exhibit for all the world to enjoy.
This JetStar is a truly rare bird with immense appeal and one that will do nothing but shake up the crowds at Mecum’s 2023 Kissimmee auction. Elvis and his effect on the music industry are known the world-over, and this opportunity for a new owner to acquire an extravagant piece of his aviation past is a momentous occasion with untold room for flights of rock ‘n’ roll fancy.
Tumblr media
In a vibrant city like Memphis, where history, culture, and modernity converge, street signs play a crucial role in maintaining order and adding character to the environment. Whether for urban planning, neighborhood beautification, or business purposes, custom street signs can significantly enhance the aesthetic and functional appeal of any area. If you're searching for "street signs near me" in Memphis or looking to create unique custom street signs, understanding their importance and the customization process is essential.
The Importance of Street Signs
Street signs are more than just markers of location—they serve several critical functions:
Navigation and Safety: Street signs provide clear directions and important information, helping drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians navigate safely. They reduce confusion and enhance road safety by indicating traffic rules, speed limits, and hazards.
Identity and Aesthetics: Custom street signs can reflect the unique character and history of Memphis neighborhoods. They contribute to the overall aesthetics of an area, making it more appealing to residents and visitors.
Branding and Wayfinding: For businesses, street signs are an effective way to guide customers to their location. Custom signs can incorporate branding elements, reinforcing brand identity and making it easier for customers to find their way.
Types of Custom Street Signs
Directional Signs: These signs are essential for guiding people to specific locations, such as public buildings, parks, and tourist attractions. Custom directional signs can be designed to blend seamlessly with the surroundings while providing clear, concise information.
Regulatory Signs: These signs inform road users of traffic laws and regulations, such as stop signs, yield signs, and speed limit signs. Custom regulatory signs can be tailored to meet specific needs and local regulations while maintaining high visibility and compliance.
Street Name Signs: These signs are crucial for identifying streets and intersections. Custom street name signs can be designed with unique fonts, colors, and logos to reflect the character of a particular neighborhood or district.
Informational Signs: These signs provide general information, such as parking restrictions, hours of operation for public facilities, and historical or cultural facts. Custom informational signs can enhance the educational value and attractiveness of public spaces.
The Process of Creating Custom Street Signs
Consultation and Planning: The process begins with a consultation to understand your specific needs, whether for a residential area, business district, or public space. Discuss the purpose of the signs, the desired design elements, and any regulatory requirements that need to be met.
Design and Proofing: Based on the consultation, a design is created that incorporates your ideas and meets all necessary standards. You'll have the opportunity to review and approve the design, ensuring it aligns with your vision and requirements.
Material Selection: Choosing the right materials is crucial for the durability and appearance of your street signs. Options include aluminum, reflective sheeting, and high-quality paints that withstand the elements and ensure long-lasting visibility.
Fabrication: Using state-of-the-art equipment, the custom street signs are manufactured to precise specifications. Quality control measures are in place to ensure that each sign meets the highest standards of durability and clarity.
Installation: Professional installation ensures that your custom street signs are placed correctly and securely. Proper installation is vital for both effectiveness and compliance with local regulations.
Every Comic Has A Story
Tomura Shigaraki x Reader
Warnings: softboi shiggy, fluff, swearing
Summary: When Japan’s most dangerous villain meets a witty and flirty comic store clerk.
Tumblr media
The mall was unsurprisingly packed, as it was the weekend. Everyone had something to do or somewhere to go. Shopping for items, chatting with friends. Not for Shigaraki though.
After his tight encounter with Midoriya, he walked the crowded mall all alone, stuck in his own thoughts. How could he become stronger? To become better than Stain? To defeat All Might? His thoughts would be dispersed when a loud angry voice boomed from his right side.
“How many times do I gotta tell you kids? This stuff is 18+!” Shigaraki turned his attentive gaze towards your voice, a voice that could instantly gain anyone’s attention. Well, aside from how loud it was. He slowly walked into the store, staring at a messy rack full of comics but secretly eavesdropping on the conversation.
“Ma’am, I’m 18! See?” The boy handed you an ID card, one that instantly made you aware of how fake it was. The card was poorly constructed and taped for crying out loud. “You all look 12. Now get lost before I call one of those bad guys to come down and beat your asses.” The boys ran out of the shop in a hurry, fearing for their lives. You turned your attention to the new customer who wore his black sweater a bit too suspiciously. “Aye, you.”
Shigaraki calmly turned his head towards your direction. He was sure to cover his face, hanging his head down low. “You’re lookin’ hella suspicious. Did you come here to shoplift?” He stood in his place, squinting his eyes at the ground. Were you always this talkative and annoying? “Are you profiling me?”
You were taken aback by his response, moving your hands and shaking your head frantically. “Uh, no. Not at all. Sorry.” His face filled with annoyance, moving to grab a random comic and walking to your counter. You glanced at the book he chose, ‘Pretty Princess Diaries’. A giggle couldn’t help but escape your lips, causing Shigaraki to grow more agitated. You reached under the counter and grabbed a more suitable comic for him. “I think you’d enjoy this better. It’s about the psychology of the villain, Memphis, and how he defeats the heroes.”
There was no reason as to why he even stepped foot in the comic store but this was perfect for Shigaraki. It would give him many ideas and ways to help in the current situation he was in. However, he wasn’t willing to pay the price. “I don’t feel like buying this.” He began to lower his final finger on the cover page, ready to deteriorate it. That way, you’d be frightened by him. “Oh, don’t worry. It’s on the house.”
He removed his entire hand completely away from the comic, watching you take it and place it in a white bag. Confusion was the only emotion he was feeling. You handed him the bag with a smile. Even though you could barely see his face, he strongly caught your interest. He looked mysterious and interesting. Or maybe you’ve just been reading too many romance themes. “If you like it, come back and get the next one.”
Shigaraki looked at you with disgust, fully aware of the love eyes you sent him. He mumbled a quick “sure” and left the store, hoping to never step foot inside ever again.
When he got back from the long travel, he tossed the bag to the side and slumped on his cold bed. He glanced at the plastic bag before pulling out the comic and taking a long look at it. A dark matte cover, red cheapfire font imprinted in the center, and underneath was the main villain. Shigaraki had nothing else better to do so he decided to read only a bit of it. Going from one page, to thirteen, to forty, until it reached the end. He wasn’t aware but it was already 4am in the morning.
Shigaraki entered the store, the same place he refused to step foot in again. He placed the white bag on the counter, setting his empty hands back in his pockets. “I need the next one.” You could barely understand him through his mumbling, causing you to lean in closer. You noticed a few of his hidden features. His fragile face, chapped lips. Chapped lips?
“Nah, what you really need is some chapstick for those crusty ass lips.” You grabbed your cherry lip balm from your purse, holding it out to him with a wink. “You can have mine. It’s my favourite flavour.” Shigaraki snatched the item from your hand, shoving it in his pocket with a huff of annoyance. Your flirtatious presence really started to get on his nerves.
This would be his last visit to you and he couldn’t wait to leave but then, a thought popped off in his head. He needed a pawn to do his dirty work. The work that he nor his group could carry out due to the huge attention it would gain. He needed someone who was as easy as you. “You know, you’re quite a view.”
You raised a brow, not expecting the sudden compliment. “Oh, thanks.” Shigaraki wasn’t the best at flirting but he needed to try in order to fully wield you in. “When’s your lunch break?” You sat straighter in your chair, a smile slowly forming across your face. You weren’t really sure when but you knew your friend would cover your shift if he knew about the situation. “I can end now. Eijiro!” You called in the back room. “I need you to cover my shift please.”
Without even waiting for a response, you grabbed your purse and stood beside an irritated Shigaraki. He didn’t expect to be hanging out with you so soon and wasn’t fully mentally prepared for your excessive energy. It was going to be a long dreadful day.
You both sat on the edge of the water fountain, ice cream in hand. It had only been an hour and Shigaraki was ready to end himself. You gladly licked your ice cream while he sat still, staring at you. Everything about you annoyed him. The way you sat perfectly under the mall sunroof or how graceful you looked eating your ice cream. You took notice of the way his pinky extended away from his cone. “What are you, British?” You pointed at his finger, causing him to look down at it. “I don’t think all British people do that.”
You shrugged your shoulders, standing up from your spot. He followed your movements, his height causing him to look down on you. You embraced him in a tight hold, feeling the rigidness of his body. “I had a great time. By the way, what’s your name?”
He wasted no time in saying his name, incapable of standing your presence any longer. “Shigaraki.” Finally, you’d regret spending the day with him and leave him alone. You stood there silent in confusion, resting a finger on your chin. “Huh, like the villain?” Holy shit, this girl was dumber than he thought. “Anyways I gotta go. Come by tomorrow so we can do this again.” You left him speechless, standing all alone in the middle of the busy mall.
He was sure of giving up. You weren’t worth all the mental suffering but here he was with you again, walking around the same mall. Earlier, he had mentioned how he hated holding hands so instead, you linked your arm with his while he had his hands in his pockets. The big advertisement sign of skincare caught your attention, stopping you in your tracks and making him do the same. “Look Shigz, we should go in. You need that.”
You looked up at him with a cheeky smile, causing him to groan in revulsion. He wasn’t sure why he was going along with it. Applying chapstick was enough for him but to you, if it worked on his lips, it would definitely work on his face.
He noticed all the skin products on display, walking down the extremely bright aisle. He heard his nickname being called and turned around, feeling your soft hands rub against his face. “You said you had a skin condition so the employee recommended me this.” Shigaraki watched as you ran your fingers from his face, all the way down to his neck. He never recalled feeling another human’s touch in such a caring way.
You both made your way towards the counter, paying for the product and leaving. To his surprise, he actually bought the cream. The very first time in his life, he actually bought something instead of stealing it. You were a bad influence on him and his work and he needed nothing more than to depart from you.
“Shit, it’s almost time for my shift.” You stood on your tippy toes, placing a gentle kiss on his cheek before steadily jogging off. “I’ll see you soon!” Never in his life had he been given such affection. Shigaraki touched the area of where your lips had kissed with delicate fingers.
That night, he tossed and turned in his bed, struggling to find sleep. You were an internal battle to him. On one side, he hated your guts and wanted nothing more than to escape from you. On the other, he hated to say it but he enjoyed your company. The way you made him feel something he’d never felt in all his years of living. He decided at that moment, he’d confess to you. No, nothing romantic in any way but strictly his identity. The identity that you somehow failed to process.
“What do you mean she doesn’t work here?” The next day, Shigaraki stepped foot in the comic shop, only to be told you weren’t there. The new clerk adjusted his glasses. “I’m sorry, sir. You’re gonna have to describe her.” A now frustrated Shigaraki grew heavily impatient, not having the time to deal with this. He realized he never asked for your name, a stupid rookie mistake he made. “She’s this short, (y/h/c) hair, (y/e/c) eyes, a little slow, annoying, and dumb.”
The man shook his head with a puzzled face. “I’m sorry but I just started working here and I don’t know much of who works here.” Shigaraki scratched his neck, seconds away from decaying him but restraining himself. “What’s the point of asking me that question then?”
He walked out of the store defeated. Shockingly, he didn’t reach over the counter to kill the goof. You really were a bad influence on him. A moment of walking later, he felt a tap on his shoulder. “Shigz.”
He recognized the fine voice all too clearly. He started to broil in anger. In a matter of seconds, he quickly spun around to face you. “Where were you? I tried visiting you and you weren’t there.” You were astounded, never witnessing Shigaraki this mad before. Usually, he was calm and quiet. “I quit my job. They weren’t paying good.”
He closed his eyes, letting the stress leave his body. “Listen closely.” He opened his red eyes which met yours. In that instant, he wasn’t sure what to say. He wanted to express how he felt but his feelings were too complicated and corrupted. “Like I said, I’m Tomura Shigaraki. The leader of the League of Villains.”
“Uh, yeah. You already told me.” He paused in perplexity, having the inability to speak or understand the situation. What did you mean you already knew? For the longest time, he thought you weren’t the brightest and he was okay with that. You began to laugh, trying to maintain it with a hand clasped on your mouth. “Did you really think I didn’t know? It was pretty obvious, Shigz. I just wanted to get to know you as you. Not how everyone sees you.”
He stood motionless feeling flabbergasted, allowing you to grab onto his arm. “I never asked you for your name.” If he never mentioned it, you’d had completely forgotten about it. “(Y/n).”
“(Y/n)” He trailed in a slight whisper, repeating after you. “Why don’t I take you on a proper date?”
With the biggest smile that warmed Shigaraki’s cold heart, you held him in closer.
“I would like that a lot.”
It is just one of minority markets that have seen a constant decline in the number of retiree operators. And yet, Dodge is still growing. Lately, my old boss asked me to join him at a brand-new Dodge Vehicle Quit. I was thrilled; nonetheless, I was uncertain that I might manage the additional responsibility. As I got involved in the brand-new trailer and also parked it behind my pick-up, I was overcome with a feeling of dread. My heart began to race, as well as my hands began to tremble as I increased to the front of the van that held the new Dodge trailer. My toes were cool, as well as my knees began to tremble frantically. A person standing alongside me was asking if I was okay. I responded in a calm voice that I was, and then I mosted likely to speak to him. Upon arrival home, I filled up my brand-new trailer and was met even more excellent information. They can chew through wiring, contaminate food, and spread diseases such as Salmonella and Hantavirus. Signs of a rodent infestation include droppings, gnaw marks, and squeaking sounds in walls.
2. Cockroaches
Cockroaches are a major problem in food establishments, healthcare facilities, and any space where hygiene is crucial. These pests are not only unsightly but also carry bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, contaminating surfaces and food. Cockroaches can hide in dark, damp areas, making them difficult to eliminate without professional assistance.
Prevention Tip: Keep all food tightly sealed, eliminate moisture buildup, and maintain a clean environment. Regular pest control treatments can also ensure that your business remains roach-free.
Businesses in Marion, AR, and Wynne, AR, can rely on commercial pest control services to eliminate cockroach infestations and prevent future problems.
3. Ants
Ants, especially in commercial kitchens or break rooms, can become a persistent nuisance. They can contaminate food and disrupt operations if left unchecked. There are various types of ants, including carpenter ants that can cause structural damage by burrowing through wood.
Prevention Tip: Ensure that food is stored properly and crumbs are cleaned up immediately. Seal cracks and entry points to prevent ants from entering the building.
4. Termites
Termites can cause devastating structural damage to buildings, which can be especially costly for businesses. They primarily feed on wood, and if left unchecked, termites can compromise the integrity of your building, leading to expensive repairs.
Prevention Tip: Regular inspections are crucial. Address moisture issues promptly and ensure that any wood in your building is treated to resist termite damage.
For businesses in Jonesboro, AR, and other parts of Arkansas, professional commercial pest control services can offer termite treatments and ongoing monitoring to protect your property from damage.
5. Flies
