Around this date 15 years ago (2004) I did my first tattoo on my friend Bryan Sobieski. I really feel like the first several years are throwaway years because my apprenticeship wasn’t the best and gave me a very limited set of tools to use and that shop was on its last leg and didn’t give me consistent opportunities to practice and improve. It wasn’t until 2007 when I opened Vintage Karma that I began the process of really learning to tattoo. Most of this was done the slow expensive way with lots of research, experimenting, and a ton of trial and error. I was on the slow boat to success but I kept at it and kept improving. It takes a little more to notice the improvements these days but I thankfully still see them and know I am still improving as an artist. I haven’t given up researching and experimenting but now it’s with a lot less trial and error. I had fun going through some old pieces to try and find good examples of similar concepts then and now. The learning curve of newer tattooers blows my mind and how far the bar of quality is always going up. When I started, what was considered the best work at that time would only be considered mediocre at best in today’s tattooing. It keeps me motivated to keep pushing and not rest solely on my reputation because if I don’t keep improving, the next generation will run up from behind and take me down. And I sure as Hell am not ready to sit down and coast. I have never been one to focus solely on one particular style and pride myself on being a jack of all tattoos/master of some. I have been doing mostly things in the house of realism lately but what is your favorite style of mine?
