The Batfamily’s Christmas List Tradition (and how Tim gets lost in it)

The Batfamily has a long-standing Christmas tradition: the List. With so many members in the family, it’s a necessity. Everyone writes down what they want (within reason, of course), and the list serves as the ultimate gift guide. It’s efficient, especially for such a big family, and it ensures no one ends up with seven pairs of socks or the same gadget twice.

Tim takes the list seriously. It’s his chance to ask for the small, thoughtful things he wouldn’t usually splurge on for himself. Things like:

New makeup brushes. His old ones are worn out and falling apart, and it’s not until he’s on a mission that requires cross-dressing that he realizes just how bad they’ve gotten. Having a new, high-quality set would make everything feel a little smoother—and maybe even a little fun.

Cozy hoodies. Between Wayne Enterprises business casual and his Robin gear, Tim rarely gets the chance to wear something soft and comforting. His favorite hoodies are all fraying at the edges, with loose threads on the pockets and fabric that’s stretched too thin. A fresh one would feel like a luxury.

A new game console. Tim is rarely ever not working, but on those rare days off, he realizes he doesn't have much to entertain him that's not work related, that doesn't require him to leave his nest. Plus, it’s a great way to connect with his siblings during low-stakes, playful nights.

Nice coffee cups or tumblers. His caffeine habits are legendary, but the chipped and mismatched mugs he uses don’t exactly scream "Tim Drake." A sleek, stylish tumbler or a high-quality ceramic mug would elevate the most important part of his day.

Random indulgences. Books, stationery, weighted blankets, maybe a nice figuring from his favorite movie, a cool gadget he wouldn’t think to buy himself—little things that spark joy and make him feel cared for, anything he knows his own parents would have never bought for him to help heal his inner child. He's never had the luxury of writing such lists before becoming a Wayne.

Tim doesn’t just take the list seriously for himself; he makes sure to go the extra mile for his family, too. He’s always had a knack for gift-giving, and he loves curating the perfect presents for his siblings. For Dick, it might be a rare vinyl of his favorite band. For Jason, an antique first-edition book he’d mentioned once in passing. For Damian, something handmade and unique, like a custom leather-bound sketchbook or a rare art supply. Tim remembers the little things—the throwaway comments, the subtle preferences—and builds his gifts around them, ensuring every box under the tree feels deeply personal.

But Christmas rolls around… and none of the thought Tim puts into his gifts is reflected in what he receives.

Instead, he gets tech. More tech. External hard drives, cables, chargers—things he already has backups for because, well, he’s Tim. He doesn’t need more, and he didn’t ask for more.

And the worst part? It’s not that they’re bad gifts. It’s that the family assumes they know him so well that they don’t even look at his list.

“Tim’s the tech guy,” they think. “Of course he’d want more tech.”

But he doesn’t.

He’s grateful, of course—Tim is always grateful—but there’s a hollowness that creeps in every year when he unwraps another stack of USB drives and ethernet cables. It’s not about the gifts themselves. It’s about the realization that the people he loves, the people who should know him best, don’t see him the way he wants to be seen.

In a way, it feels painfully familiar. Janet had always made sure his presents as a child reflected her vision for him, not what he actually wanted. New tailored suits instead of the hoodies or tees he longed for. Sleek, professional office stationery to replace his Robin-themed pens and notebooks. Vintage collectibles meant to sit on a shelf, collecting dust, instead of toys he could actually play with. The gifts always came with a message: who he should be, not who he was. And now, even with the bats, the gifts still feel like expectations—like they see him as "the tech guy" rather than Tim, with all his quiet wants and overlooked needs.

So, Tim starts dreading Christmas. Not because he doesn’t love his family or the season, but because it reminds him of how little they seem to notice the little things about him.

And maybe one year, he stops adding personal things to the list altogether. Maybe he starts asking for tech, just to avoid the disappointment.

But deep down, he wishes someone—anyone—would surprise him with a new hoodie, a weighted blanket, or a set of makeup brushes. Something that says, “I see you, Tim. I really see you.”

Thanks for doing this! I own a vintage clothing store in Hyattsville, MD (just outside DC) called Suffragette City Vintage. We stock handmade stuff (jewelry, candles, soaps, stickers, notebooks etc) along with vintage clothes, jewelry and accessories. We also share the storefront with a used bookstore and a vintage furniture/home goods store.

I am a one-woman Hyattsville tourism board so I want to point out that there are lots of other great indie businesses in the neighborhood: a brewpub (with attached general store selling beer & wine, gifts, toys, and board games), a record store, yarn & fabric store, art supply store (it’s worker-owned!), bike shop, interior design store, architectural salvage nonprofit, distillery, meadery, an arts nonprofit with studios and a gallery — and I’m definitely forgetting some.

(also, when I say vintage clothes I mean mostly 50s-70s, and as far back as late Victorian when I can find it.)

How do they like to celebrate Christmas if at all?

-Griffin: would prefer a solitary celebration, just you and him, maybe a walk through town to check out the Christmas lights and the big tree, drinking hot cider or hot chocolate.

-Tris: has big family celebrations, so you would definitely be dragged to that, dressed up in something cute he probably picked out for you based on your preferences. You'd meet a *lot* of Solis family members but it's okay if you don't remember everyone's name! Just don't forget to give Abuelita many besos or you'll offend her.

-Dell: sitting in front of the fireplace next to the tree you both decorated, reading Christmas books or poems and snacking on treats. He doesn't celebrate Christmas but would definitely go all out if you did or wanted to.

-Taipan: both of you in your matching Christmas pajamas, cozying up in bed together with all the comfy and soft blankets, watching those adorable and sometimes silly Christmas movies. Yes, especially the Hallmark and Lifetime ones.

What would they like as a gift?

-Griffin: he wouldn't ask for anything! Just your company and your happiness matters to him. But if you were to get him something, maybe a nice pair of binoculars, or a new journal to record his bird findings. Even a new lens for his camera if you're feeling generous uvu

-Tris: please, he'd get you everything you wanted. He might get emotional if you got him a nice pair of cuff links or new dancing shoes. Even a class so the two of you could learn a new dance.

-Dell: while he wouldn't want you to spend money on him, he's really into vintage fountain pens and wax sealers.

-Taipan: he would honestly be pretty hard to shop for. he would love handmade items tho, like blankets or scarves or anything, especially since he gets cold often uvu

What would be on their list for Santa as a child versus now? Biggest difference and why?

-Griffin: as a child, he probably asked for birding books, cheap disposable cameras, notebooks and scrapbooks. as an adult, he'd probably ask for new lenses, a specific birding book by an author he likes, and maybe a gift card for photo printing. There's not much of a difference for his 'wants' between his child self and adult self, he just grew more serious about his passion.

-Tris: as a child, he asked for (and received) the newest toys and gadgets, things that were popular with other kids. As an adult, he'd rather donate things for other children than ask for anything. The biggest difference obviously is that he doesn't really want for anything, so he doesn't ask for anything now. He realized as a child that he only wanted those things to 'fit in' and be liked by other kids. He grew up and would much rather make some poor child's holidays better than try to figure out what, if anything, he wanted.

-Dell: books, and lots of them. Always loved reading as a kid. As an adult, it's much the same, but he also likes to write and play around with letter making and such, hence the wax sealers earlier. Like Griffin, not a huge change, mostly gotten more serious and into the things he likes as he got older.

-Taipan: kid Tai loved sports, so he'd probably ask for new gloves and bats or basketballs/soccer balls/footballs. Typical sporty things. Now, he wouldn't ask for anything, except maybe a clean bill of health. Obvious difference here. He's not into material things anymore, and he'd much rather live a day without pain and illness than have anything else.

Handmade notebooks with vintage style illustrations

The Handmade Book Club project for April is an “Open Flat Notebook” with the added option of making a notebook in a tin. I just happened to have a tin in my stash that I’ve been hanging on to for awhile, wondering how I might use it - well, I guess its time has come! I loved learning a couple of new techniques with this project, and am rather delighted with how my wee book turned out. 🥰 As always, a huge thank you to Ali Manning of Vintage Page Designs for another fun project and excellent instruction!

My Christmas holiday shopping is finished and I didn’t visit the mall or shop at Amazon. It’s easy enough if you put some thought into your gift giving.

Some ideas:

1. Framed 1/1 photograph for a dear friend. I’m a decent photographer and when I capture a good image I print and subsequently delete the photo.

2. Books written by a friend, published by a small USA house.

3. First edition books purchased at a family owned bookstore.

4. Framed botanical prints from the early 18th century.

5. Handcrafted garden tools by Tuli Fisher (ordered, not shown).

6. Calendar by a local artist.

7. Uncommon notebooks for a fellow stationery fan.

8. Hand wound guitar pickups from a local luthier.

9. Framed vintage food advertisement for a fan of the genre.

10. As many of these gifts as is practical are wrapped in handmade wrap from Kathmandu.

I promise you this isn’t difficult. All it requires is a little thought.

General Info:

Amelia is the younger sister of Zorro Amos. They have a 7 year age difference. When she was 5, the angel and demon war happened, loosing their parents in the process. Growing up, Amelia looked up to her brother. Though equally, attempted to grow her own independence. She studies and works hard for the dream to travel beyond what Heaven has to offer. When 15, she gained her halos that took the shape of glasses. Due to the size of them, she gains the role of a midwife. Taking care of women and afab people with general health and pregnancy.

When she freshly turned 18, her brother gotten banished from Heaven. Due to being alone, she was picked on and socially shunned from other angels. Despite her being completely unaware of the reasons. She spend her years looking for clues and answers to find her brother again. He was the only family she had left, she wasn't going to stop until she found him.

Personality:

She's strongly independent and calm on the front of strangers. Pretty introverted and closed off, it takes while for her to fully trust someone. She's deeply cares about her family or friends but can't verbally express it. She's not as neat as she portrays, she's a bit of a clutter bug in her own home. Plants, knickknacks, books, notebooks galore in her room.

Her hobbies include, reading, journalism, needlework, pottery, and collecting. (From rocks, random little figures, shells, buttons, etc)

Powers:

Painkiller: Her magic is a kin to healing. However it's not as strong as others. She can't heal large wounds or scars. Her magic is more like a strong painkiller or pain relief. Depending on how long she has to use the magic, it slowly makes Amelia weaker and tired. It could even cause Amelia to pass out after too much use, her resting allows her to regain her magic. Over time she can learn to withstand the drowsiness and learn to heal small wounds.

Flying: As most angels, she can fly. However, due to her wings being more of medium size, she can't travel very far. The most she can 39 miles at most with no stops.
