Rewatching Vinland saga season 2 episode 22, and the way Thorfinn hesitated after Canute guessed that he was very bitter about what happened to Askeladd, and the way it sounds like Thorfinn picked his words out so carefully…
Bitter or not, it probably hurt SO MUCH to be reminded of it in that moment

Rambling about Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury’s ending
I've been absolutely loving every episode of the season up until Episode 23. After watching that episode, I felt a bit... disappointed? frustrated? It was like ep.23 was trying to cram Gundam Unicorn's 1-hour final battle into a 20-minute episode and it didn't feel as satisfying as the previous episodes.
I didn’t have any problems with the plot beats, just the pacing really, it felt pretty rushed - that’s where my worries started. The pacing was like they're trying to wrap up as many plot threads in case they don't get another season, while still wasting time introducing new elements to the story (like SAL apparently being massive despite being a non-entity for 90% of the story, oh and they have a giant laser! surprise!), as a result we lost some precious time that would’ve been better spent on the main conflict between. I was bummed Quiet Zero was disabled so quickly, and was totally unconvinced Prospera would suddenly back down after never being able to confront Delling AND possibly losing Eri. Not to mention the time wasted on Lauda’s pointless tantrum.
Then we go to my post-episode 24 thoughts:
Man did the last 4 episodes felt incredibly rushed. I didn’t notice it much in 21-22 cuz I was still giving the series the benefit of the doubt but after watching 23-24 it becomes apparent these last episodes were really sprinting to the finish.
It feels like they wanted to have an ending that could be considered conclusive - wrapping up as many ends they could - in case they dont get to do more G-Witch, but also they made it so that everyone who's still alive gets to survive to the end so that they can expand into more stories later.
The combination of those two factors are what ultimately leave me a bit disappointed, but I'm still surprised at how well they managed to stick the landing despite all that; it wasn't ideal or amazing but i'm thankful it didnt end terribly. I actually love the forgiveness ending for Prospera and Eri, it's consistent with Shakespeare's "The Tempest" BUT because the end was rushed it doesn't feel completely earned, like there shouldve been a longer period of rage/vengeance and at least an intense emotional confrontation with both Kenanji and Delling. G-Witch needed at least 12 more episodes, preferably more.
Given how great the first 20 episodes were, you can bet they would've had more character developments, conflicts, twists, and major deaths IF ONLY Sunrise gave them 48-50 episodes instead of 24. But I guess they didnt want to take that risk. I kinda hope the success of Vinland Saga S2 gives them some more confidence if they ever decide to do a sequel series.
I mean, they have to do a sequel series and/or spin-offs, right? I'd be seriously disappointed if they don't; the Ad Stella timeline is one of the most interesting and well-written Gundam AUs they've ever created, and my personal favorite AU. So much potential for many different stories in this timeline.
Also, the ending scene w/ SuleMio was cute af, but no kiss? not even on the cheek? booo
Final verdict:
Prologue + Episode 1-21: 9/10, my favorite Gundam AU series
Episode 22-24: 6.5/10, barely sticks the landing to get a good enough ending. Needs a sequel series to become truly satisfying and get some new writers to help Okouchi because he seriously fumbled these last episodes.

Release Information For Episode 22 Of The Vinland Saga Season 2
The release date for Vinland Saga Season 2 and the most recent information about the plot are included in this article. Viewers from all around the world are intrigued by the intriguing episodes of the Japanese television series Vinland Saga and eagerly await the release of each new episode. To find out what happens in the story's next chapter, keep reading.
Hello and welcome to episode 22 of one of the most adored anime series, Vinland Saga Season 2. As these tense episodes go on, there is tremendous anticipation among viewers. Floki and the Jomsvikings defeated Olmar in the previous episode. Thornhill had no choice but to fight and not give in in front of King Floki. Olmar finally conceded defeat, which cost him many of his troops and left many others injured. Thorfinn was observed entering the camp covertly.
According to what we saw in the most recent episode, episode 21, Floki finally triumphed with the aid of the Jomsvikings. Our latest episode's title, "The King of Rebellion," alludes to the possibility of a new tyranny over the populace. It will be interesting to watch the king's choices. Thorfinn and Drott made a wager in the last episode that if he survived 100 attacks, he would get the opportunity to see the king. Who knows, maybe Thorfinn may fight Drott after more than a hundred bouts. For more information about the release date of this anime you can visit the theanimeupdates website.

ASKELADD! And Thorfinn...
I went into this episode very pessimisticly. I thought with Askeladd injured, with Thorfinn gettig stronger (although still injured) with the season coming to a close. With Askeladd already struggling before against his own men (which I mean granted, a lot of men, but I always felt like Thorkell could have dealt with that situation and Thorfinn did do very well against Thorkell).... with all the stuff going on... I didn’t feel like Askeladd would necessarily die here before the finale even really started... but I thought maybe Knut would safe him... or maybe Thorfinn had an unexpected change of mind.
I did however expect a very good and exciting fight. I was super excited going into this episode. And then... I saw this face... and I reallized I might have miscalculatd. And so did Thorfinn.
I mean, last episode I saw this little flicker that the Anime always uses to show Askeladd angry or hyper focused... but I thought that was to make this fight more exciting... not so much to tell us that... Thorfinn is utterly screwed.
Because he was!
After Knut and Thorkell discussed about who would win, it was pretty obvious that this would go not just a little different, but way different than I expected... Like I can honestly say this is the first time that this show pulled a fast one on me and completely blindsided me. I expected a great junk of this episode to just be a very close battle. But Askeladd wins unarmed...
I didn’t expect this fight to be done and dusted just two minutes after the intro. But Thorfinn just lets his rage control his actions. That’s STILL his problem, especially when he fights Askeladd. No self-control whatsoever... And Askeladd even tried to tell him exactly that during their last encounter, and now he does it again...
I can feel Thorfinn’s disappointment.
However, I was not disappointed... because I got my long awaited Askeladd flashback!
I did already suspect that Askeladd had killed his father. I didn’t quite expect his story to be so similar to Thorfinn - and yet so different and way more succesfull.
Askeladd calling his father ugly... if the translation was correct here... really manifests his self-hatred... Because Olaf looks just like him.
And... seeing as I find Askeladd’s characterdesing the by far best in this show... I can’t really agree... Might be an asshole, but he looks great.
Anyway, I can’t believe how cold-blooded and brutal Askeladd already was as a kid. I mean, living with Olaf under the same roof for two years, being his son, gaining his father’s love and trust even and then still going through with his revenge even enjoying the look of utter betrayal in Olaf’s eyes so much that like... I don’t know 30 years later he still fawns over it... Again, just like with Thorfinn, I can understand where this anger comes from... but damn that’s brutal.
Nevermind how he then went about blaming his own brother causing his brutal death and essentially starting a war for sucessio between his brothers....
Wow...
Btw... I started thinking that his own hatred for his father’s line is why he doesn’t have any children of his own. Or at least it may be one of the reasons?
Anyway, we need to talk about Thorfinn. Because Askeladd really laid into him. And he was right. Thorfinn was an idiot! He just ran after Askeladd helping him out for years, doing all the dirty or dangerous work just so Askeladd could maybe grace him with the honor of a duel every few years or so. He might have been all “I’m not part of his army, I will kill him, he is my enemy” ... but he was the most loyal and trustworthy person in the entire group. He did everything asked of him and only because he wanted his revenge, and he wanted it the right way...
Askeladd used him for so long, and Thorfinn had a dozen possibilites to either kill him himself (stab him in the back or things like that) or just let him be killed by others. All because he wants a fair duel... And just this episode I realized that Askeladd really has nothing to fear from him. A few episodes back he said it himself, that eventually he’ll lose against Thorfinn, because he would grow old, while Thorfinn only gets stronger but... Askeladd also seems a bit self-destructive with how much he hates himself. So, would he even care? And if so... so what... He’s a warrior, as soon as he turns too old to hold his own he’ll probably die one way or the other. Never mind that let’s be perfectly honest, Thorfinn with his idea of a “fair duel between warriors” would he even deem a fight agains... I don’t know a sixty year old Askeladd “honorable” anymore?
And Thorfinn realizes it now too... He’s been used... very badly.
So I wonder if this is the moment when Thorfinn has to let go of his rage. I don’t know. At this point there are really only two options for him. Realizing that his rage cost him 11 years of serving his father’s murderer, never mind all the trauma he got from the murders he commited himself or helped committing. And then let go of it... OR second option: doubling down on it tenfold. I think with Leif still being close by, with where I want this story to go (to be perfectly honest this just me wishing for things again) I hope he can let go. At least a little bit.
Weirdly enough if he manages to let go, he might even have a better chance at defeating Askeladd... Still, I don’t feel like there will be another match between them. This felt final when I was still expecting a great fight... and even though that didn’t really happen, it still kind of feels final. I don’t think he will have another chance to kill Askeladd. I’ve now seen this fight four times. And I feel like just repeating it again and again would just keep Thorfinn stuck in this situation even though he now has the chance to move past it.
Other than that... This already very long.. longer than I wanted it to be... I did want to talk a little about Knut asking Askeladd why he wouldn’t want to be king. But I feel like I have to let that sink in a little before I truly understand it. Like I might understand Askeladd’s side of it now, that I heared his story, why he maybe doesn’t want to be or sees himself as a king. But I don’t quite know what this will do to Knut... What exactly he learned or might have missed in the story.
But... Just throwing that in because I really like the parallels. I like that Askeladd in a weird turn of events chose the character who was most like Thors in this story, to be “King”.

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ANIME
In honor of two years of Anime Updates, I’ve reconstructed my now Top 30 favorite anime series’ of all time, and I also have a slew of honorable mentions for anime I also really enjoy and value dearly.
1. Dragon Ball Z Kai (The definitive distillation of everything that was great about the DBZ manga and all that’s great about DBZ in anime.)
2. Digimon Adventure (1999) (An absolute classic of children’s anime that has enough depth and maturity to appeal to its fans years later)
3. Pokemon: The Beginning (It may be cliché to say something in Pokemon was at its best in Gen 1 but...the anime absolutely was.)
4. Neon Genesis Evangelion (Some anime ascend even masterpiece status and become bonafide legends. This is one of the best ones.)
5. Cowboy Bebop (See what I just said above. It applies here too.)
6. Yu Yu Hakusho (Not only a Shonen masterwork, but one where the anime is actually an improvement upon the original manga!)
7. Assassination Classroom (Basically the Yu Yu Hakusho of the 2010s, and bar none director Seiji Kishi’s most astonishing work.)
8. Yu-Gi-Oh! / Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (While the latter faltered more compared to the former, both have undeniable merits.)
9. Sailor Moon / Sailor Moon R (Again, see what I just said above.)
10. The Slayers / Slayers NEXT (This may not have really gone anywhere as a franchise, but I’ll always have a soft spot for it.)
11. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (In only 11 episodes, it tells a captivating and heartrending story that really sticks with you.)
12. Digimon Tamers (Objectively the strongest and smartest written of the Digimon series. It’s like a Digi-Evangelion - what’s not to love?)
13. Star Driver: Takuto of the Radiance (It’s just so - much - FUN. Criminally underrated, but it really was exceptional at what it did.)
14. Love Live! School Idol Project / Love Live! Sunshine!! (The latter more so than the former, but both of them just really delight me.)
15. El Hazard / The Wanderers (While I love the original OVA, I love the TV series version derived from it just as much in its own way)
16. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006) (Madcap chaos and a surprising amount of heart and depth from start to finish.)
17. Digimon Adventure 02 (Yeah, it’s a mess and it fails as a sequel to its predecessor, but it’s heart was always in the right place.)
18. FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (One of the most awe-inspiring and epic achievements of Japanese media, especially for Shonen!)
19. Puella Magi Madoka Magica (I enjoy a lot of what comes out of this franchise, but the original 12 episode story is forever the best.)
20. A Place Further Than The Universe (Who knew a short show about girls on a trip to Antarctica could end up so fucking good?)
21. Pokemon: Sun and Moon (The strongest single series that the Pokemon anime has ever done, with a great cast and stories.)
22. When They Cry: Higurashi (No horror anime can quite compare to this one. Note that this covers Kai & Rei too, but nothing else.)
23. Mobile Fighter G Gundam (The Gundam franchise is diverse and varied, yet no series in it could ever match this one in my heart!)
24. Vinland Saga (A work of historical fiction that is truly epic and compelling on a massive scale that few anime dare attempt.)
25. Excel Saga (In total contrast with the above Saga, this one is just balls-to-the-walls goofy and insane, and I love every second of it!)
26. Death Note (The manga and the film duology do it better, but there’s still much to be enjoyed in the anime adaptation as well.)
27. Pokemon: Best Wishes (The series that’s most to credit with rejuvenating a stale anime property. Shame 'bout that final year, tho.)
28. Nadja of Tomorrow (It’s like a classical, old fashioned novel played out across 50 episodes of anime, and a ride I enjoy a lot.)
29. Hellsing Ultimate (The sole contender to Higurashi in terms of being a superbly done dark and gory horror anime.)
30. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (The Code Geass franchise could never do anime better than in this initial outing.)
Honorable Mentions: Ace Attorney: The Animation, Angel Beats!, Bakugan: Battle Brawlers, Berserk, Black Lagoon, Carole & Tuesday Cours 1, CLANNAD / After Story, Danganronpa: The Animation, Digimon Fusion, Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro, Dragon Ball / Dragon Ball Z, Eureka Seven, Fruits Basket (2019), Gintama, InuYasha, Kill La Kill, Little Witch Academia, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions, March Comes In Like A Lion, Magic Knight Rayearth, Monster, My Bride Is A Mermaid, My Hero Academia, My-HiME / My-Otome, Nisekoi: Fake Love, One Piece, Pokemon Journeys, Re:Zero, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Rurouni Kenshin, Sailor Moon Crystal: Infinity, School Live!, Shaman King, SSSS Gridman, Tengen Tonpa Gurren Lagann, Tenchi Muyo, The Future Diary, The Promised Neverland S1, Toradora, Wolf’s Rain, and Zatch Bell.

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT
