Benedict Cumberbatch talks us through his iconic career so far and his approach to breaking down complex characters x
On Vincent Anderson: "I've never read something quite so original. I'm not just playing a man who has a psychotic episode and imagines a 7-foot tall, blue monster puppet named Eric. It was also playing Eric, reimagining what Vincent's interpretation of this id, this shadow self would be in terms of his vocal performance. It's just rich, rich story-telling. Really a complex, dynamic character to play on a really spectacularly loopy journey." On Doctor Strange: "Where to start... I was going to play him and then I couldn't because I had already booked Hamlet. They drifted away and then they, very quickly, drifted back to me. They shifted their whole factory line to my schedule. [...] I'm very much looking forward to Avengers next year. He's cooking up a storm."

Vincent Anderson X Reader
•Clean•
Being friends with Vincent was… interesting to say the least. Y/n hadn’t seen him since he was finally reunited with his son. Ever since he went to rehab to get clean. The last time she saw him was when his wife kicked him out once again. He stayed at her place clearly not in his right mind. He reeked of alcohol and Y/n wanted to be there for him. Especially since his son was missing and she knew he needed someone by his side.
They got into an argument that night, when Y/n stupidly confessed him during the time he wasn’t right in the head.
Y/n let Vincent in her apartment. He reeked of alcohol and he looked like he hasn’t slept at all.
“Are you okay?” She asked as he made his way past her making his way towards her cabinet where she kept her special beverages at.
“She’s pregnant.” He spat out downing the bottle without pouring it into a glass. “I knew it. I fuckin knew it. Don’t get laid anymore, should’ve saw it.” He takes another swig before wiping off the alcohol that fell on his chin. Y/n hitched a breath at the comment he made.
“Wait what do you mean she’s pregnant?” She asked moving her way towards Vincent placing a hand on his shoulder signaling for him to look at her. He continues to look at the wall, his eyes red and puffy from crying which she didn’t notice in the beginning.
“She’s been sleeping with her student. The man that’s been helping her look for edger. What if he took him Y/n.” His voice shaky.
“Come on.” She grabs his shoulder and arm pushing him towards the couch and placing him down so he could relax. “He’s going to come home Vincent. Edger is strong and resilient. He’s going to come home.” She spoke softly placing herself right next to him.
“I’m scared. I don’t know what’s happening anymore.” His voice cracks as he looks down at his hands that we’re visually shaking. Y/n let’s out a breath not realizing she was holding it in. She places her hands over his to calm down his anxiety.
“Everything will be okay. It’s not your fault.” She whispers softly rubbing her thumb against his knuckles. Vincent sucks in a breath before looking at the woman in front of him. Y/n looks back at him watching as his blue-green eyes looking back into her eyes. Vincent moves his hand to tuck back the loose hair that fell in front of her face leaving his hand on her cheek. Y/n watches when he does so her mouth slightly gaped open, her breathing become very uneven. His face seems to get closer to hers just mere inches, she flicks her eyes to his lips moving her face closer to his before setting her lips gently on his. The taste of alcohol on his lips. He groans slightly before grabbing the back of her head pulling her mouth closer to his. Their lips move in synced his mouth exploring hers like it was his last breath. He suddenly pulls back quickly his eyes wide from what he just done. She looks at him with a confused expression.
“I-I’m sorry I can’t.” He stutters standing up from the couch gripping his hair with his hands.
“What do you mean you can’t. Vincent…” her heart was beating against her chest standing up as well from the couch to face him. Vincent looks to his left before shouting.
“Shut up! Shut up!” He screams. Y/n heart dropped at his reaction.
“So I’m just going to stand here as you go back to her once again, well you completely destroy yourself.” Y/n shouts her blood boiling the tears prickling her eyes. Vincent looks back at her.
“I’m never ever going back to her, as much as I should because I was the shitty person. I’m fucked up! And I don’t want to drag you down over my shit self. I’m the reason my son left! I’m fucked up! I can’t do this.” He grumbles before leaving the apartment slamming the door behind him. Y/n felt her heart crumble watching him leave hearing the words he had said. Knowing she doomed herself by allowing herself to fall in love with him.
Y/n was walking the streets thinking of the memory that she countless looked back on. What she could’ve done differently, what she could’ve said differently. She looked up seeing the sign of ‘Good morning Sunshine’ not noticing she was walking past the building, her heart pounding against her chest. She wanted to see him. She wanted to know he was okay.
Vincent looked outside the window of his work seeing the small figure, his heart pounding against his chest. Edger beside him watching where his father was looking.
“Dad.” Edger speaks up. Vincent looks down at the small boy a smile on his face as he crouches down to his level.
“What’s up.” He says trying not to let the tears come down from seeing the girl he let down.
“Why haven’t you seen Y/n?” Edger asks curiously. “Eric always loved her. I made sure there was much love in his heart for her.” Vincent lets out a small smile looking down at the floor before pulling his head to look back at him.
“Because unfortunately your father once again made a mistake that he can never fix son.” He says placing a hand on his son’s shoulder.
“You’ve made a lot of mistakes but Y/n has always been there through all of them… I know you’ll never love mom the same way anymore, but I’ve seen the way you look at her. It used to be how you looked at mom.” Edger whispers softly. Vincent sniffles a bit.
“You think so buddy?” Vincent asks. It was the confirmation he was looking for from his son. He knew his relationship was going down hill a long time ago but to he didn’t want to rush into a new relationship unless he knew his son liked the person.
“I love her dad and so do you know.” Edger smiles widely. Cassie’s comes up behind edger placing her hand on her belly and a hand on Edgers head.
“I agree with our son on this. I’ve found happiness and you deserve to find it to Vincent. Go get her. I’ll watch him a bit longer.” Cassie’s smiles softly Sebastian placing an arm around her shoulders. Vincent nods sitting up from his kneeling position.
“You’re right. Thank you. I’ll be back.” Vincent takes off his head band giving it to Edger before running out of the building noticing she wasn’t where she was when he looked out the window. He looks around noticing her jacket as she moves around to a corner. He rushes towards where she turned moving his way through the crowd of people keeping his eyes on her coat. She was making her way towards the park and he continues to keep an eye on her watching as she makes her way towards the bridge.
“Y/n!” He shouts out for her. She stops in her track her heat beating against her chest not expecting to hear that voice. Vincent finally comes up behind her watching as she turns to look at him. Y/n looks at the figure in front of her. Her heart swelling. He no longer smelt of alcohol, he didn’t look like he couldn’t sleep; his bags under his eyes gone. He looked healthy.
“Vincent.” She whispers under her breath.
“Y/n.” His voice shaky as he lets her name roll off his tongue. He hasn’t said her name out loud like that in so long.
“U-Um I’m glad edger came home. I’m really happy for you all.” She smiles softly really happy to hear about edger back at home with his family once again but there was a sort of sadness in her tone, not that she wasn’t happy that edger was back at home. She loved the kid being in the family’s life for so long but knowing Cassie and Vincent were going to try harder at their relationship.
“Me too. I uh actually get him tonight. I’ve got my own place since Sebastian moved in with Cassie.” Vincent smiles softly. Y/n knits her eyebrows in confusion.
“Wait. You live by yourself? Cassie and you-?”
“Yes. There’s nothing there. Cassie and I aren’t even-“ He sighs rubbing his face taking a step closer to Y/n. “Cassie and I weren’t happy together. You were right all this time. Especially since we both were in love with someone else.” Vincent eyes look at hers searching her face to see if she was starting to understand his statement. Y/n looks at her feet nervously.
“Oh. So you don’t live alone. Who’s the lucky girl?” She mumbled softly. She felt her heart break once again hearing him and his new life.
“No I live alone. Well… she is hopefully right in front of me.” He grabs her hand with a soft touch bringing it up to his lips looking intently into her eyes. Y/n heart starts to throb at the contact watching the way he looked at her. It wasn’t a lustful look, it wasn’t a friendly look. It was pure love and admiration for her.
“I-I thought this wouldn’t work.” She mentally facepalmed herself for saying it out loud. God she wanted this to work so badly but after the last fight. The way he loved Cassie, she was scared to be hurt again.
“Y/n. I was a fuckin idiot. God I’ve been an idiot for years. I was stupid for saying what I said that night. I wasn’t in the right head space to bring you into my own suffering. I tried to hold onto a relationship that was never going to work, a relationship that fell out of love a long time ago because I fell for you. I fell for you and only you. I love Cassie but not the way I love you. I love Cassie like she’s a best friend. I love you as someone more, someone I crave, someone I need by my side. I miss you when you’re gone. These last couple months have been hell for me because the person I bounce my ideas off of, the person who’s always there, the person who loves my kid like their own was gone. I cannot imagine a life without you.” Vincent breaths out his face close to hers as he confessed everything he wanted to years ago. Her eyes start prickling with tears hearing his confession. He places his hands on her cheek wiping her tears with his thumbs. “Please be with me. Please.” She smiles softly.
“Ive been waiting for that as long as I’ve known you.” She whispers softly watching as his face moves closer to his. He chuckles deeply before smashing his lips against hers missing the touch of her lips against his. She smiles widely against the kiss enjoying the taste of his lips without the taste of alcohol fresh on his lips this time it was pure love from each other. He pulls back just slightly putting his forehead on hers.
“You know I hated this park for so long, but I think I found a reason to love it again.” He smiles his eyes looking at hers. “Because I’m here with the woman I’ve loved for so long.”
“I love you too Vincent Anderson.” She giggles before placing a kiss against his again grabbing the collar of his shirt his smirk against her lips.
Edger looks towards his mom watching her smile as she sees the two on the bridge at the park.
“I love seeing dad happy.” Edger smiles softly watching his dad genuinely happy for the first time.
“Me too buddy, me too.” Cassie’s whispers.

Rewatch of Netflix Eric, episode three. Vincent, coked out and dancing. The extremes of his artificial euphoria, his genuine belief that his plan to find Edgar is going to work, and the absolute turmoil that he himself drove his son into danger due to his failings as a father, evident in every frame of that scene. Breathtaking from an artistic/storytelling viewpoint.
The sight of Benedict, eyes closed (while the viewer can almost hear the thoughts in Vincent's head), moving to the music, his grace and rhythm pure and natural? An absolutely glorious sight to behold.

Warnings: Implied cheating, men crying
Y/n let out a soft sigh as she sat next to Vincent within her. Despite it being very late at night, the city was still wide awake. The sound of people cursing others in the distance with the car horn going on every so often. As she drove she saw people walking down the streets, or sitting on staircases. She kept her eye out much like how Vincent was doing, any signs or traces that Edger surely must have left behind.
Vincent looked awful, the bags under his eyes much more evident as the smell of swear lingered on him. He hadn't taken time to take care of his appearance since Edger ran away. At least that's what Vincent insists on.
“We've been going in circles.” She said, stopping her vehicle on the side of the road. “I don't care, if it's gas you're worried about, I can pay.” He responded. The insistence was clear in the tone of his voice, and the shakiness noticeable. She could tell that he had not gotten enough sleep, whether it be from his search, working on his latest project. Eric. Or just from a night of drinking his problems down once again. He was practically killing himself at this point.
She put the car in parked, the vague sound of the radio which was on low volume was still playing. “What are you doing?” He asked, turning his head to look at her with clear confusion in eyes gaze. “Your exhausted Vincent.” She tried to reason with him in a calm tone. “You've been up for hours on end. When was the last time you have gotten a decent amount of sleep?”
“Y/n, I don't have time to even think about sleeping.” He argued back. She shook her head, turning the key as her vehicle turned off, the silence louder within as the engine and radio stopped. Vincent only glared at her through his smudged glasses. The lights of the city reflecting upon them. As he did, she felt something hurt inside her. She had not seen him like this for a long time, sure he had been frustrated with deadlines and dealing with his coworkers, however she had never seen him in such a state of distress since… he stopped using.
“Vincent…” she started “I know you love your Edger, hell I do too. But you're never going to find him if your laying dead on the streets from exhaustion.” She stated bluntly. It was probably an over exaggeration, but she did not care in that moment. The only thing she cared about was him. He looked at her silently. She knew she had a point even if he didn't want to admit it. A large part of him wanted to tell her to fuck off and get out of the car to continue on foot. But another part wanted to rest his eyes, against her. Much like how he had done so before when he would have those late night visits to her apartment when Cassie would think he's out at bars.
He could see the concern in her eyes, the same concern she'd have when she was worried about him he'd drink, too drunk to even walk himself home or make coherent sentences. The anger in his eyes faded slowly, soon replaced with hurt, guilt and most of all, blame. He still blamed himself even if he would never say it to anyone else. The events that took place that morning continued to replay in his mind, every word he said, every move he made. If he was much kinder that morning would Edger have stayed? He should have just walked him to school like Cassie had told him to.
“Vincent?”
She asked, noticing his expression turning into one of guilt. His eyes glossy as he contemplated once more that night. “It's not your fault.” She whispered, trying to comfort him as best as she could. Her voice the only thing present inside the vehicle as it lingered in the air between them, she can hear the barely audible sounds of him trying to swallow down his pain.
She moved closer to him, wrapping her arms around his neck as she pulled him into an embrace. She took in the musky scent he had, mixed with the faint smell of booze. But it was oddly comforting, mainly because it belonged to him. She nuzzled her face into his neck as took in his smell, her eyes closed as she felt him wrap his arms around her waist. His head rested on her shoulder as he tried to suppress the dam that was threatening to break inside of him. His breathing came out in shaky breaths. “It's okay…” She whispered to him, her voice barely audible almost like if she were to speak only louder, it would break the atmosphere between them.
That's all Vincent needed before he allowed the tears to fall from his eyes, hiding his face into her neck as she held him close. She felt the wetness seep through her shirt. But she could care less about it. Her hand ran up and down his back, stroking him in a gentle manner as he sobbed in her neck. For a moment, she forgot they in her car. About the world outside of it, the city still moving and awake. People passing by them glancing at them quickly as they continued their stride. The cars driving beside them below the speed limit. But it was as if they were in their own little bubble, seeing the world outside through glass windows but inside it was quiet. Peaceful in a way, despite the circumstances.
As they sat there for a long while, Vincent's breathing slowly steadied, she continued rubbing his back, almost lovingly as he calmed down. “We can start again tomorrow, but you need rest. You can sleep at my house okay?” She suggested as she slowly pulled away. Vincent only nodded, his eyes red from his tears, as he wiped his cheeks with his hand. Getting rid of the streaks slightly.
It was only natural he'd hurt. She placed her hands on his cheeks, gently wiping his eyes with her thumbs before she leaned in to place her soft lips against his own. Closing her eyes momentarily. Vincent didn't even seemed bothered by it, returning it himself as he pressed his against hers. She pulled away slowly, turning her head ot the road as she turned on her vehicle, the engine starting up once more as she began her journey to her apartment with Vincent, knowing he needed as much rest as he can get before he killed himself.

I need to say something so Eric spoilers below the cut
tw: scuicide
So. Lenny's suicide in ep 5, and then absolutely no reaction to it whatsoever in ep 6. I mean, adding in a reaction probably would have added yet another plotline, albeit small, to every other plotline, but still. Vincent and Lenny have been friends for a while, and they created Good Day Sunshine together, right?
I get why Lenny did it, though, and I enjoyed the reactions from people on the ground (most movies don't have that in my experience) but it felt almost last minute in the pace of the show and it didn't seem to wrap up very nicely. It felt like a loose end that never fully got resolved.
Despite that, I enjoyed the last episode (and cried) and I loved the symbolism of Eric as well as Vincent's relationship with him.
If anyone has other thoughts, feel free to add them
