Vin Jin x Reader: Friendship Bracelets

Very random. Fluffy scenario pre-relationship

Vin Jin taps his pen impatiently, willing inspiration to strike.

Stupid fucking Duke and his stupid fucking talent. Vin needs to remind everyone how much better he is, and he needs new material.

You haven't been much help with his music, fiddling with some silly piece of string and beads most of tonight. Tongue poking out in concentration, and brows knitted as you continue whatever the fuck it is you're doing.

In fact, you have been a hindrance more than anything. Numerous times Vin had wanted to write something about you - your words and looks and company becoming his muse. Then he remembers how cringe and weird that would be, so he's back to square one.

And now you've fallen asleep, hand still holding your little craft project. It's not an uncommon occurrence, you and Mary and Vin often spending evenings together, leading to an inpromptu sleepover.

Vin pulls a spare blanket over you and resists the urge to ruffle your hair.

In the morning, you tie the friendship bracelet around his wrist.

So this was what you were working on? This stupid thing took you all night?

Vin thinks it looks pretty ugly. A black knotted cord thread with tacky white beads, reading '♡VIN♡'. The bastard didn't hesitate to say so, which you brush off with a forced smile.

The shitty thing clashes with his aesthetics, and he's half tempted to cut it off right then and there.

But it's a gift from you, he can't do that. If only to spare your feelings - that's absolutely the only reason. He doesn't care about the stupid thing.

The bracelet becomes a reminder of you that night, the hours that you spent on this. (Seriously, how did this pathetic thing take so long?)

Not even Mary has one, which Vin is quietly smug about. It's completely unique. One of a kind. Just for him.

He likes to think it brings him good luck when he notices it dangling from his wrist. Even the ugliness has its own endearing charm.

The first time he misplaces it, he tears his room apart.

No prizes for guessing who your assailant is. You notice Vin barely managing to duck behind a corner as you frown in his direction.

"This is fucking bullshit," Vin had cursed the day before, frustration building as he sits alone in his room.

How the fuck did something so simple take so much time and still end up being so hideous. He looks at his exceptionally poor handiwork. It was somehow even worse than yours, and that's saying something.

What a waste of fucking time, he thinks, as he angrily grabs his jacket and sunglasses and makes his way to the shopping mall.

There's no way Vin could give you his homemade attempt. This would have to do.

At the jewellery store, he flushes in mortification when the store assistant asks him what his girlfriend would like. Nevertheless, as soon as his eyes land on this, he knows it is exactly your taste.

A silver bracelet with a heart pendant hangs prettily from your wrist.

Vin feels a rush of joy when he notices you wearing it. He keeps the smile off his face, wills his pulse to stay normal, and the heat on his face to subside.

You shake your wrist at him, the jewellery flashing in the sunlight, and give him a small smile like you're sharing a secret.

Vin calls you a loser, even as his hand absentmindedly comes up to touch his own bracelet.

He thinks of them as a matching set.

thinking abouuuut Vincent and gender

I write them with they/them but you can pick any pronouns and won't be corrected. Is this them using any pronouns? Kinda but not really. Vincent's gender is "please don't ask me that", they're mid ongoing gender crisis but don't have the time for that and simply do not think about it. They'd much rather you just assume something instead of being put on the spot (with what is frankly a reasonable question that they've gotten too worked up about).

Vin is afab, originally named Agnes. Their gender Situation started when they were quite young; they were always close to their father and interested in his work*, it's simply easier to convince your colleagues that your son is interested in your studies and is perfectly allowed to join you, rather than your daughter.

(*Researcher and university teacher, they get their penchant for academia and Weird Interests TM from him)

This then evolved into taking them on work trips, where it's less hassle to be a young man in a foreign country. Enrolling them in the university as a man just made sense and was easier for everyone involved.

They still go by Agnes with their family, and in certain circumstances will use feminine terms for themself, but they've also been publicly going by Vincent since they were a child, and are used to using masculine terms on the regular. They never really saw themself as a man or woman, but it was never really something to question.

The Neath is very accepting, much more than they're used to, and it is now in fact something to question. The option to simply pick whichever gender they want is very freshly introduced, the option to be neither is even more so. Someone early on addressed Vincent by they, and they liked it more than they expected, which threw a wrench in their relatively stable gender balance.

They'll figure out what they actually want eventually, maybe when they're less busy.

Alright wise guy, what are your thoughts on the theme(s) of the first Mistborn book. This is literally an excuse for you to ramble about it, have fun.

VOID I LOVE YOU SM

So spoilers for Mistborn: The Final Empire! If you haven't read it, please beware because under the cut, Here There Be Spoilers (and also beware, Very Long post under the cut!)

The big running theme in The Final Empire is trust. Who can one really trust? Is it worth it to put your life in the hands of other people? What says they won't betray you as soon as it becomes favorable to do so?

Honestly this really is what Vin's character arc in the first book is about. At the beginning of the book, she's trapped in a low-level street gang where everyone is always out to get everyone else. Heck, the second time the audience ever sees her use her powers is when she is helping her boss betray a business partner.

Vin's brother has beaten into her the idea that she can trust nobody, not even him. Everyone is always out to hurt her or take advantage of her, and if she does not prove her immediate worth to her group, then at best she will be kicked out.

This, of course, is not helped by the fact that she is part of the literal slave class! Which is a whole nother essay tbh.

Then Kelsier takes her in and everything changes. There's a scene early on in the book, after vin formally joins the crew, where Kelsier and his men are all laughing and enjoying themselves while plotting their Big Plan™. And Vin, who does not trust any of them, is on the outside, quite literally. She's outside the room, watching them plan, wishing she could be included but not allowing herself to, because at this point in the book she still thinks they could betray her at any time.

I think now is a really good time to mention that being a Mistborn is built on secrecy and paranoia. Mistborn are literally the nobility's assassins. They hide their identities under hoods that blend into the mist so as not to be seen. So their powers cannot be used against them or their Noble Houses. In broad daylight they have to pretend to be normal people, or at best, regular Mistings. They can't trust anyone with the truth that they are Mistborn.

(Heck, even a quarter of their powerset- Copper and Bronze- create mistrust. With Bronze, after all, one can hear the allomantic pulses of burning another metal. Copper, on the other hand, blocks that; the use cases for these two metals lies in paranoia that someone else can use their Allomantic powers against you.)

Anyways! So we've explored some of the different aspects of mistrust in Mistborn, so what's the counterargument?

In a word: Kelsier.

Kelsier shakes up everything that Vin believes about how relationships work. He introduces his crew as something different- despite being a thieving crew, they operate under a principle of trust and camaraderie. "My crews rely on trust," Kelsier says at one point. In direct contrast to the dirty, paranoid crews Vin worked with before, Kelsier's crew is welcoming, understanding, and trusting of her.

But Kelsier's trust isn't just talk, either. When we learn that the crew believes Mare betrayed them in their last heist, Vin asks Kelsier how he could love Mare even though she betrayed him. Kelsier answers that given the choice between loving Mare and being betrayed or never knowing her, he would choose loving her. "I'd rather trust my men than worry about what will happen if they turn on me."

In the same passage as above, Kelsier poses a question to Vin: where has she been happier? with the old crews that we built on lies and suspicious, or with Kelsier's crew, who trusted each other and let their guards down? It's a rhetorical question, and the meaning is clear: Vin and Kelsier both are happier for risking themselves in order to be loved.

I don't think I've nearly done this topic justice. There are a million more points I could pull out and point to, but I want to end with my favorite quote from The Final Empire. It's from Vin, in Chapter 32. She says:

“Once I may have thought you a fool, but… well, that’s kind of what trust is, isn’t it? A willful self-delusion? You have to shut out that voice that whispers about betrayal, and just hope that your friends aren’t going to hurt you... Distrust is really the same thing, only on the other side. I can see how a person, given the choice of two assumptions, would choose to trust.”

. james lee and kenjaku, because identity theft is a competition and they are winning. impossible to tell their real age. act as a perfect foil to the main character and their ideals. slay, but traumatizing.

. GETO AND JAKE. HEAR ME OUT. pleasepleaseplease. firstly because MOTHER. secondly, there is a certain darkness and fluidity about the way they're written.

REEK OF YIN SYMBOLISM. unhealthy coping mechanisms to their respective situations, and have a tendency to isolate themselves. very insane psychotic mentally disturbed but those details are somehow ALWAYS overlooked and oversimplified. very gnc coded. a reason behind their downfall and unravelling is the existence of a very powerful man, and their damning association with said man. did i mention being irrevocably in love with their best friend?
