Mari, Lady of the Village

Mari was born in a small town in the southern parts of Vanar. She was a bright and intelligent child who liked to read and study. She was born as a boy, but through the years, she slowly began to realize that she didn't really like being a boy.

Her family wasn't exactly understanding of this. Once they heard, they're attitude towards her switched from kind and caring, to cold and sometimes downright cruel.

Mari had enough of this when she was about 18 running away from home, wanting to be free from the wrath of her family. While running, she found a strange talisman of some kind. It looked like something she had read about. A type of artifact that could potentially make your biggest dream come true.

She wished to be her true self. And because of this, she turned into the girl she is now.

Still she continued to run, eventually finding her way to a village known as Mayville. Mari was cared for there and eventually she saw them as her family.

Including another new girl named June, who Mari immediately befriended. The two even served in the village's guard together. June is the first person who she told about her past, and she is thankful to have such a trusted friend.

One day, members of the Silver Lances, a famous mercenary company, came to the village's defense. Inspired, Mari thought about joining them in order to be brave like them. June and Mari both decided to resign temporarily and join the Silver Lances, promising to return with stories of their travels. She specifically wants to grow strong enough to be able to tell everyone about her past.

I am aware I said i wasnt gonna post my zelda 2.0 redesigns until i finished them all, but considering these have been sitting for nearly a year at this point (and may have been mucked by the new game coming out soon but who knows) I figured I might as well start sharing them.

February's zine! Each scene is a 4-page spread making up a 16-page booklet. Originally, I was just going to draw one bug per page, but I got more than 16 bugs, and I am fond of making scenes and telling stories anyway, so that's what I went with. :)

Villagers that were in Phoenix Drop since the beginning:

Garroth, Zenix, Dale, and Theodora (my OC. sorry not sorry, this is being written for my childhood self) have been with Phoenix Drop since before Aphmau arrived, all of them being guards ofc. I assume Dale would be the oldest guard out of all of them, then Garroth, then Zenix, and then lastly Theo. There are a few other guards but they're irrelevant.

Molly is already married to Dale already. I imagine she does something that could be summed up to "working from home" and but idk what. Maybe she makes stuff? Seeing as time will work... Like how time typically works irl, Brian is currently in guard school or wherever he went. He'll come back when relevant.

Corey is the head miner, he typically has to work far away from home because, before Aphmau, the village had no mine. The nearest one was miles away. Emma is a farmer or something, I haven't decided. Aphmau will likely introduce her to Corey or they'll already be married. Idk. I honestly forgot about her until my rewatch (I'm on ep 47. THERES SM LEFT OH MY IRENE).

Emmalyn is, of course, told to shelter Aphmau since she has nowhere else to go. I'm trying so hard to make this girl hate Aph via terrible miscommunication. To Aph, Emmalyn has no reason to stay in Phoenix Drop. She hates the village really. But she stays because where else is she gonna go that lets her have all these books and run a library? She would never admit it but Phoenix Drop is her home. She's the first one to notice signs of Aph's Irene powers but she always overlooked it as "dumb girl doing dumb things."

Also, Aph learns about what a village needs with a book from Emmalyn's library.

Brendan is still a farmer. As an attempt to encourage trade between Phoenix Drop and other villages, Garroth asked Brendan to build a dock, which he is working on when Aph gets to the village. He tells Aph about how bad the farms are, prompting her to build a farm based on what a book about farms said. After the docks explode, he works with Aph to make a new one. When he gets shot, his little sister (according to the aphmau wiki, it's unclear which one is younger vs older) Kiki comes to visit.

The basement lesbians, Sylvia and Kimberly (i remembered them more than Corey and Emma), are just nice women hanging around the village. I'll try to remember them more than the og. I imagine they own a bakery together.

I believe that's everyone who was in Phoenix Drop pre-mcd! I feel like I'm missing some people but I literally don't remember any other relevant character that don't get to the village until a little after Aphmau's arrival

Chapter one

A guttural scream had awoken Aribella from her sleep, making her shoot up in fear. She glanced around her room before making eye contact with the outside world through the open window. It had been a hot night and she had opened it just to cool it down a bit. But what she saw was a dark blue sky, the moon shining in her peripheral vision. It was still night, and judging by the moon, not even four hours had passed, so it must have been the earliest hours of the morning. 

She didn't even have time to question where the scream had originated before another filled her ears. This one was different though, the first one was filled with fear but this one… it was filled with grief. And one scream followed another and another before Aribella had even noticed the orange tint to the sky.

When she had, she descended the stairs of her home and had bursted through the door to see fire and the royal guard. The sounds of guns shooting, people shouting and screaming and swords clashing had overwhelmed her the moment she stepped her foot out the door. But she hadn’t had the time to panic, so she grabbed the arm of the closest person and told them, “Get to the village hall! It's the furthest building from the village and should keep you safe, bring anyone you can.”.  She hadn't even given the poor woman she grabbed time to answer before she ran closer to the screams.

Her eyes darted across the men fighting, hoping, praying to see the person she was looking for. Aribella had dodged everyone that came across her, the path in her head set, and when she came upon a familiar set of blond hair she sighed in relief. “Jeonghan!” she had cried as she ran to him. Jeonghan’s shoulders had dropped the moment he had heard his younger sister’s shouts, his head turning so quickly you’d think he’d gotten whiplash. “You shouldn't be here!” he shouted at the brunette, wiping the dust from his uniform. “What’s happening?” She was determined to figure it out, no matter the cost. Jeonghan had opened his mouth before he closed it again, like he was debating whether or not to tell his sister anything.

 “Some dangerous people had escaped the dungeons and fled here, terrorizing the village,” he paused for a second before changing the topic, “is-”. He hadn't even managed to finish his sentence before Aribella had interrupted him. “Haniya is safe in the village hall, don't worry.”  

The look of relief had replaced the look of worry once he had heard his fiancée was alright. “You should go.” he said, placing a hand on her shoulder. Aribella shook her head, “I can't lose you too.” she whispered as she took the hand on her shoulder to hold it. He shook his head and was going to say something before an explosion was heard from the west of them. “Go, keep Haniya safe for me.” Jeonghan said before placing a soft kiss on his sister's forehead and running over to the explosion site.

Aribella stood there, staring at the fading figure of her brother. But she had a job to do, so she quickly turned her back and ran as fast as her bare feet could take her up to the village hall. It took her a few minutes but once she was finally in the hall a woman with gorgeous, long, silky black hair and chocolate irises gravitated towards her. “Is he?” the woman spoke, her voice as smooth as honey. “He‘s fine, Hani. Worried, but fine.” she smiled at the woman, Haniya, to comfort her.

The village hall was filled with the village people, the seamstress was handing out blankets of her fabric to keep them warm, the taverns keep and the baker handing out drinks and food to fill the hungry folks. In all her twenty odd years of life, she had never expected her home to be attacked in this way. 

She hated it. The feeling of being useless, not being able to do anything to help. And as if her future sister in law noticed her change in behaviour, she wrapped her arm around the younger's shoulders, “It's going to be alright. We’ll be alright.”. Aribella knew that, she knew, but she couldn't shake off a new found feeling in her core. Something was going to happen, something bad. But glancing at the people around her, she couldn't bring herself to say anything. They looked terrified, and even if she didn't show it, Aribella felt the same.

But it was as if the gods had sensed her troubling feeling when multiple men broke through the windows, pointing swords, daggers and guns at them. Unconsciously, Aribella held onto Haniya’s hand and hid her behind her back, in a sort of means to protect her from whatever these men might do to them. The feeling in her core grew as one of them approached her and ripped her away from Haniya and dragged her to the doors that lead out to the village. 

“Ari!” Haniya’s shout echoed throughout the building and moved to run to her, to stop the man from taking Aribella, but was promptly stopped when the end of a sword had met her face. Aribella struggled in the grasp of her captur that she didn't notice them getting closer to the cliff front. It was only when she stopped struggling that she realised what was going on. No. No no no no, she thought to herself as she struggled more. Blue and black uniformed men crowded around them pointing their swords in their direction. “Let the girl go, pirate!” One of the guards ordered, scowling at Aribella’s captur. 

The pirate only seemed to laugh at the order, “Let us go and I will.” he taunted. Jeonghan shook his head, as he was one of the many guards there, “Sir-”. The general, or Aribella thought he was the general, put his hand up to silence him. “Tik. Tok.” The pirate taunted again, it seemed like they had no choice. Silence filled the air before the pirate scoffed in frustration, “Took too long.” was his final words before throwing Aribella off the cliffside. “Aribella!” Jeonghan screamed in terror. “Jeonghan!” Aribella cried in return as she fell towards the angry sea at high speed.

It wasn't long before she had crashed into the water, the air being forced out of her as she was thrown around the rocks. It was only when she was tossed into a boulder under the water everything turned black.

Nater Day

Virtue of Irene = Forgiveness

Celebration of life, living and all things alive. The idea is to wash away all the sins, grief, and hardship of the previous year, and move into the next free of the past. (Very Irene-esque 👀). Thus the "forgiveness"

Last week of The Matron's month

Nater is a play off of the word "Nether"

Villagers do basically do whatever makes them happy! Each village have their own traditions but some go across all of Ru'aun.

Traditions:

Gift Giving - Tokens of love, achievement, and miscellaneous trinkets

Short work days, week Off for work and school, minimal travel

Blessed Water - Ru'aun Holy Water except died purple with a distinctive flowery taste and sticky texture. Made in bulk for all of Nater. Village babies commonly get "Baptise" during Nater.

Nater Bread - sweet bread drenched with spice milk and topped with sugar cream

Prayers to Irene for good luck and fortune

Nater Wishes - Villagers write their years wishes on paper, ribbons and cloth the early morning of Nater.

"Lord Dowsing" or "King Shower": Village Lords stand before their people and allow themselves to be dowsed in Blessed Water. Villagers will then throw their Nater Wishes at their lord for good luck. Whoever's wishes stuck to their lord would come true! (It is common for Lords to attempt to grant at least one wish that stuck if it is in their ability.)

Some go about "King Showers" differently, most of Ru'aun just practise as it is written above. But in Meteli, since everyone there seems to have a sense of humor, they will actually also throw Nater Day treats and foods at their lord, and by the end, they'll be a sticky mess. They then have a good laugh.

In Scaleswind and Brightport they just bake Nater Bread and stuff their wishes in the middle. Because these villages are larger than Phoenix Drop they have to hope that their bread even gets to their lord at all.

So, you know how when an author is writing og!Cale and they want to give him a power, sometimes they give him fantasy spirit stuff? Well, I want elementals to have the usual 'spirit king per attribute' that you usually find in fantasy mangas, but make the water spirit king an axolotl and let og!Cale befriend them.

And when I say Axolotl Water Spirit King I mean 'non-parlant little flying axolotl' that can turn into a 'giantic, water-looking-like, could swallow a pirate ship, still non-parlant axolotl' a la Ponyo.

Just, Imagine og!Cale who was just minding his business and finds a little dorky amphibian that got trapped in a net. And the little dorky one smiles at him. He has no choice but to help it.

The little one likes him. They become friends :D!!

So, turns out his animal friend can fly. Cool.

His new friend decided to follow him— Wait, where is he going?

...Oh.

So, his little friend is not so little anymore.

People within the Scroll of Memory

Marian and Estinien kept their two children a well-kept secret; their first was a son they named Edred. Both overjoyed but also afraid. They knew the dangers tied to them being protectors of the realm, so they made a plan and reached out to every settlement in the Dravanian Forelands, from the hunters in Tailfeather to the dragons of Aynx Trine. They pleaded with each settlement to help watch over their child and, if the danger ever touched the land, to quickly send him to Ishgard for safekeeping under Aymeric de Borel's protection, and without question, each settlement agreed. Though it did weigh heavily on their hearts, Marian and Estinien knew this would be the safest course for now. As time went on and Edred grew, he befriended an orphan girl named Amelia in Idyllshire, and the two became like brother and sister, so with each visit Marian and Estinien treated Amelia as their own until one day they decided to adopt her and gave her the life she always deserved. When it was calm, they would take their children back home to Ishgard for short or long periods of time, giving them as much love and attention as they needed. Thankfully, their children always understood the gravity of why their parents had to always run into the face of doom and saw them as true heroes, and one day they would follow in their footsteps.
