Confusion over the choice of venue has led to the men’s boxing team, which has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, unable to resume training after the long coronavirus- enforced lockdown. Nine Indian boxers, including four women, had qualified for the Games at the continental qualifiers in March in Jordan and their training was to resume in the last week of June.

Postponement of Olympics gives me more time to prepare for Tokyo: Vikas Krishan - Times of India

Postponement of Olympics gives me more time to prepare for Tokyo: Vikas Krishan - Times of India
NEW DELHI: He turned pro in January last year but his calling to play under the national flag proved too strong to continue in the USA, despite a promising start. Vikas Krishan won both of his professional boxing bouts but then decided to put it on hold and see if he is good enough to make it to his third consecutive Olympics. Only one Indian boxer had qualified for three Olympic Games before — the London 2012 bronze medallist Vijender Singh. Just a year after taking the break from pro-boxing, Vikas joined Vijender in that elite space. He booked a ticket to Tokyo 2020.
At the Asian/Oceania qualifiers in Amman, Vikas bagged a quota for India in the men’s 69kg category. But just over a fortnight from that day last month, the 28-year-old from Bhiwani found himself in ‘lockdown‘ mode as the country began its fight to come out of the grip of the coronavirus pandemic.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day lockdown, which began on March 25.
When Vikas returned from Amman, where Indian boxers booked a record-breaking nine Olympic quotas, he was nursing an eye injury that prevented him from competing in the final of the qualifiers, and he settled for a silver medal. That injury has now healed, but there’s another problem.
Vikas doesn’t have a punching bag at home to practice during lockdown.
“To keep myself fit, I am doing ropes, chin-ups, push-up, squats and all the exercises according to my body weight during this coronavirus break,” said the 2011 World Championships bronze medallist, talking to Timesofindia.com.
For punching practice, he has asked his father to hold up punching pads to help him.
In his previous two Olympic appearances, Vikas came the closest to a medal at Rio 2016, where he was defeated by Uzbekistan’s Bektemir Melikuziev in the men’s 75kg quarterfinal.
In what might turn out to be his last appearance at the Games, Vikas doesn’t want to let the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics affect him mentally. He only wants to draw positives out of a decision he believes was inevitable.
“As I heard the news of the postponement of the Olympics, I was very happy because of two reasons,” he said. “One is that I will get enough time to prepare myself and be unbeatable till the Olympics come in July-August next year. Secondly, coronavirus is a very big threat to the world. So at this time, we should concentrate on that only. Olympics is only a sporting event, which can be held later on.”
The International Olympic Committee has decided to postpone the Olympics by a year. It is now rescheduled for July 23 to August 8 in 2021.
Vikas, who is called ‘Vicky’ by his close friends, doesn’t want to let any worries around his boxing career come in the way of making the most of the downtime he has got to be with his family.
‘The Indian Tank’, as he is nicknamed in the professional boxing circuit, wants to make the most of the lockdown period so that he doesn’t miss his family much once he is back at the training camp.
“As a sportsman, we don’t get enough time to spend with our families. Because of this coronavirus break, now we have got that time and I want to make full use of it by enjoying it with them (his family). I don’t want to miss them when I go back (to the training camp). That can be difficult, so I am living this time fully,” the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games gold medallist told TimesofIndia.com.
At the same time, the DSP in Vikas is fully aware of his duties to not just protect people but also make them aware of what they need to do in India’s fight against COVID-19. He is employed with the Haryana Police.
“As a responsible citizen, I want to request all our people to maintain social distance and follow the guidelines of the state and central Governments,”
“And I have one more piece of advice,” he added to make a final comment.
“You can call it a request from my side. Please don’t misbehave with the police. We are here to serve you. We are only following the guidelines of the government. We don’t have any right to take your freedom away from you but as this coronavirus is a big threat, you must do what the police tells you, and respect them.”
