The video stops, the tape clicks and the screen turns black. Caretaker stares at it, waiting for something, for anything, to tell him where it came from. He takes the tape out and rewinds it before putting it back in the VCR and pushing play. 

Whumpee’s tied to a chair, his head hung forward. Someone’s garbled voice barks something to him and he lifts his head weakly. 

Bruises, new and old, litter his face and the skin under his tattered clothes. With every ragged breath, Whumpee’s head bobs. The voice comes again and Caretaker can almost make out what they say. 

Whumpee stares blankly at the camera, “My name is Whumpee and…I’ve been missing for five months.” he looks behind the camera and continues. “I’m alive, and I don’t want anyone to come for me.” he takes a deep, shuddering breath and keeps going. His voice breaks, “I’m happy where I am and don’t want to leave. Caretaker…if you’re watching this…don’t come for me.” 

He shakes his head weakly and stops staring at the camera, instead letting his head fall forward and his chin hit his chest. The voice comes from behind the camera again, and Whumpee stares ahead, head still lowered. 

The video stops, the tape clicks, and the screen turns black. 

Caretaker takes a deep breath and wipes the tears he didn’t notice he was crying from his cheeks. 

His phone rings and he picks it up without looking. “Hello?” he wipes his nose with his sleeve and falls back onto the couch. 

“Caretaker?” 

He almost drops his phone. Fumbling, he pulls it away from his face and looks at the name on the display. He presses it back to his ear and breathes, “Whumpee?” 

Whumpee half sobs, half laughs and inhales deeply. “Can you come get me?” he waits a second and adds, “I’m-you know Whumper, right?” 

Caretaker’s heart sinks. Whumper had always watched Whumpee. It was harmless enough, but when Whumpee went missing, they didn’t react how anyone expected them to. 

“Caretaker?” Whumpee whispers. 

He clears his throat and nods, “Yeah, yeah, I know them. Is that where you are?” 

“Yeah, but…you need to hurry up. They won’t sleep forever. I was able to slip them something, but it’s not very strong.” 

Caretaker grabs his keys and starts his car, “Ok, just…I’m on my way. Just hold on a little longer.” 

“Hurry,” Whumpee begs softly.

Day Seven: Made to watch

Whumper sets up a zoom meeting with other whumpers eager to learn their techniques. Each session is a detailed lesson on how to hurt whumpee in different ways, with a live whumpee to demonstrate on! Whumper has proper camera’s, lighting, and has everything scripted perfectly to match the meeting length. After the demonstration the whumpers discuss differences ways to approach that technique and critique each other. They do a whole workshop on it, and every week more and more people sign up to join.

you know the excellent quadruple life fan comic has me thinking about double life again. and MAN. thinking about the soul bonds mechanically. like, before I get into my meta-analysis it’s worth noting that non-diagetically the soulbond mechanic being based on how many hearts someone has is basically the only way I can think to do it in minecraft that’s sensible, but diagetically…

so do you ever think about how the marker of what made people soulmates in double life was pain?

like, soulmates share injuries/pain! that’s the whole premise! like, to the point that day one people were making up elaborate ways to hurt themselves so they could test for their soulmates! you met your (very romantic-coded) partner and confirmed they were the person you were looking for by hitting each other, generally!

being a soulmate in the double life universe isn’t about being compatible, it’s about literally sharing pain, and it’s just… I think about how for some pairs, they share the burden between each other, and it brings them closer. for some pairs, though, the only way they know how to communicate is by hurting one another. and the thing is, this isn’t just a literal thing. like, mechanically, the thing soulmates do is share pain and communicate with pain, but metaphorically, can you say desert duo doesn’t have trouble communicating because half of how they know how to exist is either sharing in pain or causing it for each other? can you say that ranchers’ strength wasn’t a pair of people who understood each other’s pain and desperation to be better than they’ve been before? can you say that divorce quartet isn’t, well—

Away from everything safe, constantly having to survive creatures warped by the creeping dread. A fighting battle to stay safe in a ever changing environment. But, not so safe for Eddie who is hearing Vecna every night.

Very messy doodles compilation My tablet was screaming at me for not having any space left so I went to my whump drawing files to do some cleanup. Turns out not only I have an endless amount of wip files, but each file has an endless amount of layers with sketches I put them all together so I can get back to them quickly. Who knows maybe I'll finish some of them If some of these sketches inspire you, feel free to use them as a ref/base for your own characters

Putting your characters in a kidnapping scenario is a great way to practice characterization because there are just so many ways you can take being kidnapped. Are they terrified and crying? Or calm and determined? Screaming and yelling curses or making jokes? How about begging for mercy? Immediately getting violent?

And when/if they break, how does their behavior change? You can have a character start calm and collected and turn paranoid after weeks or months in captivity. Iconically, take your defiant and cocky character and make them scared and meek. Take the sweet innocent character and turn them into a monster. How would your OC develop if they were in a problem like this?

My closing statement is, test your characters. Like a geode, you need to break it to see the gems inside.

Do you have any prompts for hostage videos?

I got this idea stuck in my head, hope it helps!:

I like the idea of the whumpee not being shown straight away. The whumper really wants to make a production of it, so they're teasing the whumpee reveal. However, in the background noises can be heard. They're very distracting as the whumper waffles on, padding time to allow those receiving the video to hear them moving chains, testing tools, turning on blowtorches etc. Maybe there's a shift of the chair and a quiet "No - please." before the video ends too.

The next one is similar, except there's the tell-tale signs of the whumpee trying to keep quiet with every strike. This format continues for a few videos until the whumpee finally breaks and screams when the whumper is halfway through their demands. There's a glimpse of a smirk on the whumpers face before they excuse themselves and the video ends.

The next video stars the whumpee and whumper sitting side by side. The whumper is acting all friendly with them, but the whumpee flinches at every movement. (However your whumpee looks can be based on what you're subjecting them to behind the scenes).

I can imagine them to be treating it almost like an interview (or even a vlog depending on the setting/timeframe). Where the whumper asks the whumpee what they'd prefer, where the information is etc etc, all coming to a head when the whumper asks: "Is there anything you'd like to say to the people at home?"

And the whumpee explodes with pleads, trying to wrench themselves from where they're bound to the chair to get closer to the camera.

"Don't do it, please don't give them what they want - I'm fine! Don't give them anything-."

There's a cut.

And the chair next to the whumper is empty. They smile at the camera. There's crying in the background.

"Looks like we haven't quite convinced them yet. We'll see you next week where hopefully they'll be more... agreeable."

Part 2

Caretaker answered the video call from Whumpee with mild frustration. Whumpee knew they had a busy work day and couldn't take time off to chat. They had talked with Whumpee about waiting until after work to talk. "What?"

A face Caretaker had never seen before stared at Caretaker. "Caretaker?"

"Who is this? Actually, you know what," Caretaker couldn't keep the irritation from coloring their words, "I'm sure you're some friend of Whumpee's. I can't talk now. I told Whumpee that. I have a lot of important things at work today. So, whoever you are, tell Whumpee I'll call them on my way home since they are so eager to talk."

"Caretaker, allow me--" the stranger started, but Caretaker cut them off.

"I am hanging up now. Tell Whumpee I don't appreciate having my day interrupted like this."

"Tell them yourself," the stranger said as they walked over to something--someone--tied to a chair. They fisted the person's hair and lifted their head. Whumpee sat bound and gagged in the chair. The stranger held a knife to Whumpee's throat. "Do I have your attention now, Caretaker?"

Caretaker's mouth went dry. "What do you want?" Whumpee looked unharmed, their eyes wide with fear.

The person pressed the knife point to Whumpee's throat, drawing a small trickle of blood. "Well, I just want to talk, Caretaker. But are you ready to listen?"
