not fandom, jsut wanting to talk about a thing in video games
okay, so, i do love puzzles, and i love secret doors and everything, but there's one thing taking me out of it: the actual door puzzle.
theyre pretty interesting, dont get me wrong, but how would the person living there use these doors with those entrance puzzles? (itd be kinda obvious theyd have access there, most games ive seen have those areas pretty dust free and it feels stupid to have house you cant get around)
lemme just pull up an example from the video i was watching that got me remembering this: charlie slimecicle's 2nd episode of resident evil village; let the bells ring.
(sorry for blurry image, ive switched from my old browser for a while now and the screenshots are hard to take with my new one lol)
the puzzle (for the player) is very simple: hit all 5 bells, and open the door. my issue? one bell is constantly moving and can be only hit at the right moment, another is really far away in the room, the fifth bell is literally outside (you have to shoot the glass first to get to it), and the distance and length are just...a lot. cause, yeah, its fun to play out in the game. but imagine having to do that each time. like as in, your living there and to enter a room you have to keep shooting the glass window and repairing it later.
this is just one of other examples, and while sometimes i dont notice when playing, thinking back on it, its not as fun from the outside perspective.
of course, the experience isnt ruined because "oh, this not realistic", because literally your being chased throughout that house by a tall vampire lady and her 3 bug daughters the last of your worries should be how they get around their house, and more so on how you can.
not to mention, you dumb down the puzzle and you risk it not having the difficulty that makes it fun, and makes it pointlessly easy (aka, making it reasonable for someone living there to do, and get the opposite effect basically).
i dont know anything on game design, i mostly watch others play them, just wanted to point that out lol

I am a solo indie dev trying to overcome my anxiety and actually let people know my game exists. It is a cute physics based game where you are the level.
I love making this game with passion and I am so excited to share it with the world, but somehow I need to let the world know. Unfortunately the way steam works is the more wishlists the more visibility, so if you are interested it is super appreciated :)

I've discovered that I can solve logic puzzles like nonograms and word searches not only faster, but with a demonstrably lower error rate as well, by putting video game boss music on in the background, which I'm pretty sure proves human cognition is bullshit.

Just wrapped up the new Collector Mode for Mighty Marbles! In this mode, you’ll chase down coins hidden in tricky spots you might skip in Standard Mode. Think you can collect them all? Now with super shiny coins! I love shiny things!

Finally ready to start showing off the project we've been working on for a few weeks.
TRAIN PUZZLE (dot exe) (title pending)
me and @msasterisk are working on a switching puzzle game set on slimegirl astronaut Eaurp Guz's homeworld. You operate an Advanced Steam switcher to move cars around. The prototype implements a single level, a model railroad Inglenook layout, but there will be other original levels as well.
MsAsterisk has done all of the programming and game engine work, I've done the game design and art assets.
more screenshots and development photos below the cut:
Until the last couple of days, the game has used plain colored boxes for its cars. The first playable version, shown here, was just a pixel art train toy, with no actual game mechanics, but with an external list randomizer you could still run the inglenook game.
The physics was apparently a monumental undertaking to get working, but now it works great!
i don't remember what this was about. Truncated the vertices to the unit cube or something.
@thefallencomet's playtesting of the first prototype revealed a severe bug with couplers where switching cars coupled at a distance between three tracks at once would completely break physics. MsAsterisk fixed it by simply breaking couplers when they're too far apart.
car concept art
u.i. concept art. The tracks are bonafide pixel art here, but they've since been replaced with all 3D assets. The loco here is a pixelated render done in blender of the advanced steam tank engine model that i made about a month ago.
control stand model, WIP. We're not sure if we're going to go for this kind of detailed control stand. Why does a steam engine use a control stand that would look more at home on an EMD diesel? It's the magic of Advanced Steam Technology! The actual engine is controlled with actuators and microcontrollers, they're merely operated from the safety of the control cabin. The gauges are for brake cylinder, boiler pressure, steam chest, and speedometer--but no promises about whether these will be functional.
and finally, portraits of the engine crew
More to come as the game continues development.

As much as I love the thought of Levi having to do the older sibling "Just hand me the controller!" move to Satan and co. when they get stuck in a game, I find the idea of Mammon doing it to him even more hilarious. Especially if Mammon actually figures it all out and does it flawlessly while Levi's gnawing his tail in fury.
Bonus points if Lucifer does that Dad thing to Levi too where he's been stuck on a level for hours, Lucifer watches him play for like .5 seconds, then figures out the puzzle immediately without even understanding the "intimate details" of the game mechanics like any good otaku should.
#mammon makes him pay get the controller back#or he exits the game without saving after he fixed it#lucifer doesnt get video games#but he does get logic puzzles#chastizes levi for bad common sense#obey me#obey me shall we date#shall-we-date-obey-me#obey me leviathan#obey me lucifer#obey me mammon#obey me headcanons
