Bristol UK - The Victoria Rooms
The Victoria Rooms, also known as the Vic Rooms, houses the University of Bristol's music department in Clifton, Bristol, England, on a prominent site at the junction of Queens Road and Whiteladies Road. The building, originally assembly rooms, was designed by Charles Dyer and was constructed between 1838 and 1842 in Greek revival style, and named in honour of Queen Victoria, who had acceded to the throne in the previous year. An eight column Corinthian portico surmounts the entrance, with a classical relief sculpture designed by Musgrave Watson above. The construction is of dressed stonework, with a slate roof. A bronze statue of Edward VII, was erected in 1912 at the front of the Victoria Rooms, together with a curved pool and several fountains with sculptures in the Art Nouveau style.
The Victoria Rooms contain a 665-seat auditorium, a lecture theatre, recital rooms, rehearsal rooms and a recording studio. Jenny Lind and Charles Dickens performed at the Victoria Rooms. It was also the venue for important dinners and assemblies, including banquets to commemorate the opening of the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the quatercentennial anniversary of Cabot's discovery of North America, meetings which led to the establishment of the University College, Bristol, an early congress of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and suffragettes "at-homes". The building was purchased and given to the university in 1920 as a home for the student union and, circa 1924, it spent a brief period as a cinema. Following a fire in 1934, the building was refurbished by the university. It remained as the base of the student union until purpose built facilities were opened in Queens Road in the 1960s. The Victoria Rooms then became an exhibition and conference centre, before housing the music department in 1996. They remain in use in the 21st century for concerts, exhibitions, plays, recitals and lectures.

Diana: Her Fashion Story
This was a special exhibition by Kensington Palace. I did not know it was here until I arrived for my visit of the state rooms.
Trace the evolution of Diana, Princess of Wales' style, from the demure, romantic dresses and other outfits of her first public appearances, to the glamour, elegance and confidence of her later life. In this elegant exhibition at Diana's former London home, her relationship with her favourite designers is explored through a display of some of their original fashion sketches, created for her during the design process.
I loved these. The William one could use a bit of work, but the Diana and Kate ones are so good! I am happy to report there were no pillows of Harry or Meghan at the time of my visit.
Designer sketches with fabric swatches
Left: Princess Diana's Pink Satin Evening Gown With White Raw Silk Collar And Cuffs, by Catherine Walker in 1987. (This dress was in a bunch of promo photos advertising the exhibition.) Diana wore it twice - once for this official portrait and again on a visit to the Berlin Opera House in November 1987.
Right: Catherine Walker Day Dress, worn in New Zealand.
The princess chose this pink silk dress for an official visit to Japan in spring 1986. The collar was shown to ocmplement the flowering cherry blossoms. She wore the dress again later that year to a charity ice show at Wembley arena. While there, she watched Olympic ice skating champions Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean perform.
A green Victor Edelstein gown worn for an official portrait.
The Travolta dress.
Behind is a Catherine Walker pink sequined ivory crepe gown with asymmetric neckline, worn at a banquet given by President Collor at the Itamaraty Palace while on a State visit to Brazil, 23 April 1991.
These two dresses (the Travolta dress and the Brazil dress) were both sold at an auction in 2013. See details, and other dresses from the auction, here.
Diana wore the (can't read this bit) design for her visit to Japan. (I can't read the rest.)
But read more about this dress here! She wore it for a state dinner in May 1986.
A Bruce Oldfield black velvet evening gown, worn for an official portrait by Lord Snowdon and at the first night gala opening of Les Miserables at the Barbican centre, 10 October, 1985.
This dress was also part of the 2013 auction.
Next to it is this dress that Diana wore to a Pavorotti concert in support of The Red Cross in 1995.
This Victor Edelstein dress, worn twice:
Princess Diana wore this silk lace gown from Victor Edelstein on two separate occasions. The first was in 1987 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Later that year, she wore it again during a state visit to Germany. In 1997, designer Pat Kerr bought the gown, according to Diana: A Life in Dresses. It now resides in the Pat Kerr Private Royal Collection. (From Elle)
Tweed suit from the honeymoon photocall
From the Angola Landmine Walk
Diana's pink suit from 1997 (and an unrealized Meghan copycat? You be the judge.)
Red Catherine Walker suit. Worn to a charity luncheon for HIV/AIDS.
A collection of gowns:
Embroidered gown - Versace, worn for Harper's Bazaar Photoshoot
Purple gown - Versace, worn to a gala in Chicago, 1996
Black gown - Catherine Walker, worn to a UNESCO dinner at the Palace of Versailles, 1995
Another view, same collection of dresses.
Embroidered short dress - Worn in June 1997 to a party for her dress auction at Christie's.
Short blue dress - Catherine Walker, worn in 1997 for personal shopping excursion in London (see a better view here)
Tuxedo halter dress - Catherine Walkler, green velvet. Worn for her 1997 Vanity Fair interview and photoshoot
Bruce Oldfield, worn in 1986 on a visit to Saudi Arabia
Some quotes about Diana
Now, you might recall from my 'Victoria' Exhibit post that I mentioned I had two all-time favorite objects from the Kensington Palace visit, tied for first place. The first one was the bathroom signs, which I showed you on that post.
Now the second one:
This is the wallpaper that lined the hallway just outside of the Diana exhibition near the restrooms.
I LOVED this. The watercolors, the tribute to her fashion and style, the little references to flowers, buildings, and jewelry associated with her. I had this had my phone wallpaper for a little bit.
A closeup of the sketch for her wedding dress in the wallpaper.
About the wallpaper
So this is the last of the "royal Britain" photos! Up next, The Crown and some Harry Potters.

BROADWAY DIVAS SUPERLATIVES: Bosom Buddies - Icons Only
Yes, yes, there are so many iconic friendships on and around Broadway (Bernadette and Mary Tyler Moore, especially), but this time there's no "other" option.
Video Clips & Stories Beneath the Cut: More Polls
Angela Lansbury & Beatrice "Bea" Arthur: Angela and Bea first met in 1965 during rehearsals for the production of Mame, in which Angela played the titular Mame, and Bea her "bosom buddy" Vera. Both women would earn Tony Awards for their iconic, never-to-be-bested portrayals. They remained lifelong friends for the next five decades until Bea's death in 2009, where Angela hosted her memorial service at the Majestic Theatre. As the story goes, Angela's legendary Jessica B. Fletcher is named "B" for Bea.
"She was a class act and a real joy to work with. When I first met her I thought I was meeting this patrician, classically trained actor, but she has a mouth like a longshoreman. No kidding. She loved telling dirty limericks." - Bea Arthur on Angela Lansbury, 2003.
youtube
Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth: Forever linked by dance and the great Bob Fosse, Ann and Bebe met in passing during the special 3,389th performance of A Chorus Line, but would not come to know each other closer until Sweet Charity, where Annie took over Charity for Debbie Allen during the run, and Bebe played Nickie (Tony Award). They remained dear friends until Annie's death in 2020, working together in Fosse, and of course, the 1995 revival of Chicago that persists to this day.
“I fell in love with her, I continued to fall in love with her. I am in love with her forever. There was a trust between us, there was a connection between us that was beyond anything that had any logical explanation. I felt sometimes--this may sound strange, but it’s the truth--I felt sometimes I looked in her eyes and I time travelled.” - Bebe Neuwirth on Ann Reinking, 2021
youtube
Carol Burnett & Julie Andrews: Though they may have never starred in an official Broadway show together, Carol and Julie are too iconic to pass up here. They met in 1961 and are both still alive, kicking, and enduring friends. They did a series of television and stage specials together, including Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall (1963, Emmy Award), Julie and Carol at Lincoln Center (1971) and Julie & Carol: Together Again (1989). They also both starred in Putting it Together as the part, one after the other. And as a story goes, Carol and Julie were "caught" kissing as a prank on their friend Mike Nichols, but were instead discovered by Lady Bird Johnson.
"As we sat in the darkened hotel hallway on the sofa in front of a bank of three elevators waiting for him, we started to feel rather foolish, and we thought 'Let’s do something to make him laugh.' We decided to pretend we were making out," she said at the time. "He’d called our room and said he was coming right down, so we thought, well, the first person off the elevator would be Mike. But it wasn’t." - Julie Andrews recounts the story to Oprah magazine.
youtube
Chita Rivera & Gwen Verdon: Before there was Annie and Bebe, there was Chita and Gwen. The original Velma and Roxie duo in the 1975 Chicago, Chita and Gwen remained friends until Gwen's death in 2000. As Chita recounts, Gwen Verdon was the first person to tell her she had her own talent and didn't need to be her understudy. Years later, they were starring together in Chicago. Chita and Gwen shared the role of Charity (alongside many others) in the benefit concert production of Sweet Charity in 1998. It would be Gwen's final stage appearance. Though Fosse brought his own drama, Chita and Gwen never fell out.
"Our relationship was what it was from the day I stood beside her in “Chicago.” She was a strong woman. She was private. She used to, which is really kind of cute because I would call her on it, sometimes dramatize a story and would say, “Isn’t that right, Chita? Don’t you remember that?” And I wasn’t even there. I would find myself saying, “Yeah, absolutely.” She was so terribly funny, really, really funny." - Chita Rivera on Gwen Verdon, 2019
youtube
Donna Murphy & Marin Mazzie: Donna and Marin met while doing the Passion workshop in 1993, and their friendship endures to this day, despite Marin's death in 2018. After all, "and should you die tomorrow, another thing I see: your love will live in me." Marin sang at Donna's daughter's christening. Donna sang at Marin's remembrance concert. She still writes her memorial posts to Marin each year on the anniversary of her passing. Donna played Mother in the earliest workshop of Ragtime, before Marin took over and made that role what it will always be.
"She would always be the first person to say "how are you doing?" That kind of kindness and selflessness in a way--it's not that I didn't appreciate it then--I really did. So I don't need to smack myself in the head and say "why didn't you realize how rare and beautiful it was?" I did. What I couldn't calculate was how much I miss it." - Donna Murphy on Marin Mazzie, 2018.
youtube
Kelli O'Hara & Victoria Clark: Our first and only mother-daughter duo, though who is mother and who is daughter is up for debate. Kelli and Vicki met playing mother and daughter in the 2005 The Light in the Piazza as Clara and Margaret Johnson. They remain dear friends to this day and the only pair alive, well, and not dangerously close to death... Kelli and Vicki, trained opera singers, also reunited for Dido and Aeneas in 2016. Their friendship has survived a few awkward situations, such as being up against each other (alongside fellow Piazza star Celia Keenan-Bolger, and that's a story in and of itself) for the role of Nellie Forbush in South Pacific.
"I just started calling her Mother, because I felt like I could be who I was without covering up. Why she called me Mother back is pretty obvious, but she was, for me, always the rock. I felt like, Okay, she loves me, warts and all. Hopefully." - Victoria Clark on Kelli O'Hara, 2016.

Man, Hozier was once again such a stellar fucking experience to see live but. I wanna give a MASSIVE shout-out to the audience actually!!! From simple things when at the start of Would That I where he realised he had to switch guitars, and the audience almost immediately and without prompting took over the rhythm of the drums to add to the lack of melody while we waited, to the three emergency breaks in the concert. Apparently it was HOT down in the standing area, and three times people needed medical assistance (might have fainted, I'm not sure). Each time the surrounding people rapidly waved their phone lights to attract attention, and each time Andrew actually stopped the show so that we could get the lights on and make space for crew to delve into the crowd. And the audience didn't fucking peep. People made the space. Almost no-one used those moments to walk away to go to the bathroom or the bar or whatever (once one person moves, more people follow, and the last thing you need when someone in the middle of a concert hall needs medical attention is for the crowd to start bustling and moving). People stayed put, people didn't get annoyed. No-one complained. Andrew kept reassuring whoever needed help to take their time and that it was okay. His patience and calm voice probably helped, but like. Still. Massive shout-out to the crowd for behaving as stellarly as they did, and for their even larger enthusiasm for the songs when they restarted. Genuinely I'm just amazed and so proud to be able to point to my fellow dutchies and go "these people make for a good fucking hozier concert"
Also I laughed so hard when the opening act Victoria Canal asked the crowd to raise their hand if they were gay and I shit you not, in this hall that fits about 6000 people, genuinely HALF of them raised their hands. In Victoria's greatly amused words, "I fucking love Hozier concerts"

A Night at the Opera, Part III
Mary Stevenson Cassat (American, 1824-1936 ) • At the Opera • 1878 • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Opera in the Victorian era was as much for the performance, as it was for the social display of socialites and their fine attire. The latter perhaps having been more important. To see and be seen was so much a part of the opera experience, that with the advent of electric lights and the ability to dim the hall during performances, was met with complaints that patrons weren't able to view their surroundings.
Opera glasses were an integral part of the opera experience. All the better for views of the latest styles and courtship couplings. Opera glasses were being manufactured in beautiful, ornate styles to appeal to fashionable Victorians.
Opera glasses, 19th century. Museum no. S.320-1981. © Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Gentlemen wore top hats and tails to the opera. Just as important as clothing were the rules men had to follow when escorting a lady. For example, during intermission, when many opera-goers left their seats to promenade in the halls, a gentleman was obligated to ask if his lady companion was interested in doing so. If she declined, it was considred unmannerly to leave her seated alone at a performance.

The Royal Albert Hall is a concert hall on the northern edge of South Kensington, London, England. It has a seating capacity of 5,272.
Since the hall's opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world's leading artists from many performance genres have appeared on its stage. It is the venue for the BBC Proms concerts, which have been held there every summer since 1941. It is host to more than 390 shows in the main auditorium annually, including classical, rock and pop concerts, ballet, opera, film screenings with live orchestral accompaniment, sports, awards ceremonies, school and community events, and charity performances and banquets. A further 400 events are held each year in the non-auditorium spaces.
The hall was originally to have been called the Central Hall of Arts and Sciences, but the name was changed to the Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences by Queen Victoria upon laying the Hall's foundation stone in 1867, in memory of her husband, Prince Albert, who had died six years earlier. It forms the practical part of a memorial to the Prince Consort; the decorative part is the Albert Memorial directly to the north in Kensington Gardens, now separated from the Hall by Kensington Gore.
