I haven't gotten very far, yet, but I haven't been so emotionally invested so early in a story in a while. I'm also just a little in awe of the writing so far. I can't wait to finish it.

"Viatica", an Interactive Fiction

GUYS!!! My sister did an awesome thing!

I want to share with you something truly special. My sister has published her very first interactive fiction based off a novella she wrote 25 years ago in college. The reason this means so much to me is because this story, and seeing my sister literally write a whole ass book, is the catalyst to me becoming a writer myself. Growing up, I loved storytelling, but I didn't think it was something I could actually do until I saw my sister achieve it herself. She is the reason orangeflavor exists.

I'm truly honored that she asked me to collaborate with her throughout the process, to help brainstorm and critique and outline, and even write a couple small bits that she could blend into her story. I've gotten her permission to share it here as well. :D

Previously, I'd never played an interactive fiction (IF) before, but knew what they were. I think this format really works for the story she wants to tell and the themes she's exploring, and better yet, it's both browser and mobile friendly. ;) The site where it's published is free to use, just create an account, and while some IFs and visual novels are only by purchase, my sister, Fir & Fireweed as she goes by, has planned to never monetize this project. I feel like that's pretty fucking rad of her.

The site is itch.io and Viatica is the name of her story. If you're interested, please go read it, and maybe we can gush about it together, haha. I'm truly in love with this story, and think she's done a phenomenal job expanding on it from the original piece that first stole my heart all those years ago.

Okay so, i just finished reading/playing viatica (firfireweed.itch.io/viatica) and.... holy shit is it good. The story and plot are amazing, the characters are amazing, everything about it is amazing. It all felt so real... i don't even know how to express it.

Also the music??? how do you even find music so perfect for every single scene??

This! Writing characters that you don’t normally gravitate towards or agree with is difficult, but so incredibly rewarding when you do finally figure them out. When you finally break through that murky wall and hit that “eureka!” moment when they start answering those questions themselves. And then they really do become real!

Writing, at its core, is about stepping into someone else’s shoes. It’s not just about creating characters who are like you, it’s about understanding characters who are nothing like you. Writing forces you to ask, “Why does this person act this way?” “What are they afraid of?” “What do they want?” You have to feel what your characters are feeling, even if you don’t agree with them. That’s how you create characters who are complex, layered, and real.

I’ve been eyeing your story for awhile now and finally gave it a try, and had to tell you how much I enjoyed it! Which is a big deal for me. It’s honestly a little more angsty and dramatic than I usually like, not my usual read. I can only handle so much piled onto my character, and after the affair, the parents (omg those parents), the job interview, and finally the eviction I think I’ve hit my quota. I’m praying, BEGGING, please give me something good and wholesome. I’m clinging to Cammie for dear life at this point, my one bright spot. Throw me a bone here!

Heyo! I'm Aj (she/her)

I got into IF through the app called Choices way back in 2017 and since then there was no turning back. It wasn't until last year when I got into text-based IFs. A friend on tumblr reblogged 'Defiled hearts', it caught my interest and here I am deep down in the trenches of IFs.

Listing my favourites isn't an easy thing cause there are so many I love. So I will list some that have been on my mind for a while: Infamous, Press Play, College Tennis: Origin Story, Drink your Villain Juice, Golden, The Golden Rose, Our Life Now and Forever, We Wretched Creatures, TWC , The Lonely Shore, Blood Choke and Midnight Sun.

I mostly help out with finding IF news and game updates in the wild.

I started my journey with Voltage (now Love365) and dating sims or Otome games on my PSP Vita *sheds a tear*. I honestly don't know how I came upon IF, but I fell in love with ​Our Life: Beginnings & Always around 2021?

My favourites? Hmm, currently it would be: Love and Leases, Adoriel's Tears, The Abyssal Song, Keyframes, Our Life 2 and a bunch of Kickstarters that I can't wait for!

Personally, I'm married with no kids! And I work full-time as an administrator. Boring, I know.

In regards to the Zine, I normally do the formatting. Basically taking everything the peeps have found and putting it all into the Zine. I try and write some of the Highlights and try to dabble in the Editorial (if my work doesn't get edited).

I started my journey into IF through Episode, but due to poor non-female MC representation, I soon began to look for something else. My friend then introduced me to text-based games through The Wayhaven Chronicles and Mind Blind. I've been going deeper down the rabbit hole since!

I'm literally majoring in interactive media. IF is my life now, send help. (/j)

Some of my favourites would be: Mind Blind, Shepherds of Haven, Reanimated Heart, Seven days in purgatory, Chronicles of Taldun: The Remainder, seekL, LLLLL (aka LATEX, LEATHER, LIPSTICK, LOVE, LUST) and a lot of the stuff DOMINO CLUB does. (There isn't only IF, but that's what I usually go for. Definitely check them out if you're into creepy indie stuff!)

I'd call myself the jack of all trades concerning the zine. As of now, my main job is to be the social media guy and to do the different exports (playable Zine, Tumblr, PDF/.txt). But I also help out with news-searching and compiling + editing stuff for the editorial, column, highlight, letter and thanks portions.

Hey all, this is Jenn (she/her) *on hiatus

I am a youth sports coach (fútbol, softball, basketball) based in Los Angeles. I am in the process of applying for a master’s program (Sports psychology).

I did write and code a couple of IF games but never finished. I am a perfectionist and I couldn’t publish something not up to my standards. I started reading IF a couple years ago and I couldn’t possibly name my favorite. Some of the most memorable IFs are: The Exile, TWC, Crown of Ashes and Flames, Infamous, WWC, Zombie Exodus: SH, The Golden Rose, The Fernweh Saga, and Crown of Exile. I can definitely add more…

Basic responsibilities: Scouring the internet for IF news and frequently updating our existing database. I honestly enjoy the challenge. On a good day I can find upcoming IF titles and newly released demos. It’s so exciting to find new IF because I know someone will eventually see the same potential I do in that new IF.

I am one of the lovely interviewers who’ll be asking questions, you know grilling fellow authors on their IF, WIPS and favourite characters. The usual. As to why or how I started, I gotta say its cause of books and great authors like Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. And their respective series wheel of time and basically the whole Comsere universe. I tried following in their footsteps writing a few books of my own. But like every writer most of these ended up being WIPs I either abandoned or stopped. Still I didn’t let that stop me and started posting some of them, I am the writer of Borne of the sands a static webnovel with a few chapters and Dusk and Dawn my current ongoing project(Still a work in progress so forgive the grammatical errors. T-T).

My favourite series are the Keeper of the Day and Night, Infamous, Wayhaven Chronicles and Blood Moon.

The current story I’m working on was inspired by these however most of my inspiration came from static or interactive cyoas like the Slayers v4, Supernatural Investigator, Demigod v4, A Traveller!s Tale and Universal War. If you haven’t heard of them please give them a go they are amazing.

~ EVENT SPOTLIGHT : ECTOCOMP 2024 ~

La Petite Mort or Le Grand Guignol? Either way, it’s going to get spooky!

Ever since October 2007 spooky-game enthusiasts all over the world have a chance to participate in ECTOCOMP, an annual competition for interactive fiction celebrating the SPOOKY MONTH OF HALLOWEENTOBER. Whether you celebrate Halloween, Day of the Dead, All Saint's Eve, or just love ghost stories and creeping people out, this is your time to shine!

Previously organized by Jason Guest for ADRIFT games, the jam is now open to all development platforms. Since the beginning of this initiative, there has been a motivation to unite and strengthen ties between international communities in the IF world. Creators can submit games either in one of the four main languages - English, Spanish, French and German or any other!

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Ghostbusters. Named after the Ghostbusters’ car license plate number ECTO 1, this year the jam pays tribute to the film that inspired the title! Some other subthemes and inspiration prompts are: Spooky adventure, Sweet supernatural, Halloween fest, Día de Los Muertos, All Saints', All Souls' Eve and any other festivity or mythology around the world.

As per tradition, Ectocomp has two categories:

La Petite Mort, for those who want to speed-write their game in 4 hours or less.

Le Grand Guignol, for games that, for whatever reason, took longer than 4 hours to write.

When the jam is over, all of the submitted games will be uploaded to the IF Archive.

It’s spooky month and with it comes the annual ECTOCOMP 2024. If it’s spooky or supernatural why not submit it?

Running until Halloween, the Phantasia Jam is a three months game jam to create a fantasy narrative game, with the theme of “Hidden Magic”. It accepts both VN and IF.

On the CoG Forum, Halloween is already there! Until Oct 31st, you can submit your projects to the Halloween Jam - but don't forget the theme! VAMPIRE, Murder, 70’s Disco!

Disabled Rep VN Jam has a very simple premise but a very important message.

Once upon a time, a game jam was held to create stories around the theme of fairy tales… and that game jam is the Once Upon A Time VN Jam. It’s running from October 1st to January 31st.

Concours de Fiction Interactive Francophone 2025 is for all French-speaking enthusiasts. Submissions are accepted until March 3rd 2025.

Are you perhaps a fan of more somber, melancholic themes? Then check out the Dying Year - Visual Novel Jam! You have until the end of the year to participate.

The Black Visual Novel Jam is all about working with creative professional developers who work in visual novels to bring more Black stories to life. The goal is to create a space where Black creators can show their unique storytelling through visual novels.

Bare your teeth and sharpen your claws because the Monstrous Desires 2024 Visual Novel Jam is here! Dedicated to the love of entities, horrors, and monstrosities, this jam will be full of romantic Visual Novels (VN) that heavily focus on a monster may it be original or from classics, folklore, modern media, etc.

Honestly TWC opened up a massive can of worms and I’m like drowning in them at this point.

Anything @pdrrook touches is absolute gold and I heavily recommend checking out Perfumare. I’m a Reed stan myself

The Golden Rose by @anathemafiction Is another big, big favorite of mine. The world building, the characters, the options, it’s all *chef’s kiss*. Couldn’t even tell you who I simp for most because I love all the ROs so much. Also one of my absolute favorite subscriptions on Patreon :)

The Soul Stone War by @intimidatingpuffinstudios is another big favorite. Book 1 and book 2 are out, with book 3 in the works! Such a great author, the writing in this is so fun

Viatica by @fir-fireweed is a new one that I’m recently obsessed with as well. Such a unique story and I can’t wait for more updates

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: An Affair of the Heart by @doriana-gray-games is also such a fun one. The writing is fun, the characterization is fun, and who doesn’t love a mystery. Would give my life for Watson
