Things I love about the 2024 vhs christmas carols:

- all the new choreo

- all AJ's acting choices as Scrooge and the direction for Scrooge by James

- shout out especially to how terrified Scrooge is in 3 spirits, the cleaning of glasses and slapping himself and shaking and everything, incredible

- and also to his reaction when hearing Fred and Joey's characters talking about him during Christmas electricity

- also shout out to the way the spirits and Marley push and pull Scrooge around and control his movements in 3 spirits

- Jaime being VHSmas

- not people being in grandma land and all of their cloaks

- after Scrooge's "time to keep your many pennies away from lazy peasants" the three spirits surrounding him and looking disappointed then on the line "it's time to take a journey through the past future and present" the 3 spirits all put their hands on Scrooge and push him

- "how he laughs at my jokes even when they're bad, they're usually bad..."

- Scrooge is too excited to give Bob a raise he can't hide it and struggles pretending to be mad I absolutely love it omg

- ugh the hug between Scrooge and Bob gets me every year but the little like sigh/cry Bob let's out omgg

- Scrooge: "how quiet and normal it seems, it all must have been a dream" Narrator: "but no he's out of luck" Scrooge: "what?"

- James' being grossed out by his drink at Fezziwig's

- Scrooge's dance after Christmas electricity/before priceless during the "whatever that stuff just did to me I want more" bit

I rented the 2024 VHS Christmas Carols digital ticket, and Grandmaland made me cry. Again.

My theory of what the latest Starkid musical is about based on my own deductions and past Starkid productions (huh, that rhymes):

Based on the words in the top left corner and the style of Bryce’s clothing, it is very easy to deduce that this musical will be medieval inspired, but I can dig deeper. Bryce’s outfit does not look as put together as a typical princess gown, so I’m guessing that our protagonist is wearing armour, if I had to nail down a time period I’d say Ancient Greece or Rome, making her a gladiator. That would already be a fascinating musical, but I’m going further, stay with me. As someone very rightly pointed out in a comment/reblog that I can’t quite remember, the text used for the date resembles the 1980s movie Labyrinth, which plays into Starkid’s love of nostalgia… we’re getting close. Starkid’s musicals are filled with nostalgia - classic Disney (Twisted), Harry Potter (AVPM trilogy), Star Wars (Ani), Batman (Holy Musical B@tman), classic video games (Trail To Oregon), classic horror/sci-fi (Hatchetfield series), VHS/classic stories (VHS Christmas Carol) - but what do most of these also have in common? They are, to borrow a word from the latest Hatchetfield musical, ‘nerdy’. So, what do we have here? A team that prizes both nostalgia and nerdiness, creating a musical about a woman in armour, perhaps a gladiator. We also know that Team Starkid are returning to parodies after Hatchetfield, returning to their roots you might say. This has led me to one conclusion… the next musical produced by Team Starkid will be… a DnD parody. Think about it! It’s nerdy, it’s nostalgic, and it’s hot right now because of the recent Honour Among Thieves movie making more people interested in the game, and Stranger Things as well - a Starkid member was in a Stranger Things parody recently (was it Jaime?) so yeah. That’s my best theory, and no matter what this musical is actually about, I’ll love it, and Bryce will rock her first true lead role, she deserves this.

Edit: I just want to date the release of this post just in case my theory is correct so I can show people this post and be like “See? I’m psychic!” So yeah, this post was released on Saturday 23rd March 2024, around 11 pm, and this edit was made on Sunday 24th March at precisely 13:54 pm. Also I want to tag @the-real-team-starkid just in case they see this :).

VHS Christmas Carols 2024!

I saw it last night and I can see now why the 2023 version was just a temporary one. This one felt more put together with better mics.

Weekly BBT Charts - 2024 Week 50 (Ending Dec. 14th)

Ice Princess' soundtrack pulls a surprise smash on this week's chart as Wicked's 2 hits hold strong, and Parannoul's We Shine At Night makes a big comeback. More after the cut.

Diana DeGarmo's Reachin' For Heaven debuts #1 with 34 plays, holding back a solid challenge with a 5 play margin. This song marks Diana's first charting song to date. I'm Not That Girl by Idina Menzel from Wicked's 2003 Broadway Recording dips 1-2 in its second week, still having a slim chance to crack into the 2024 Top 100 songs list. However, it would need to remain in the top 5 for the rest of the year to succeed. And that depends on the point cut-off not being above 200, in which case it would be mathematically impossible for the song to make it (a song can score a maximum of 50 points per week, and I'm Not That Girl debuted on the 4th last week of the calendar year) Wrapping up the top 3, Flor's Kick It debuts #3, pushed mainly from one of Penny Parker's Minecraft SMP stream VODs.

Parannoul's We Shine At Night climbs 11-4, charting for a 9th week this year and clenching a position in the top 100 almost certainly. The song had initially underperformed after debuting at #1 on the very last week of the 2023 calendar, which split the song's score over the two years. However, this most recent run seems to be redeeming the song.

Defying Gravity by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth dips 2-5 in its 2nd week; Some Are Lonely's This Is What Remains holds strong in the top 10 as it slips 4-6, and Duffy's Distant Dreamer from the JoJo: Stone Ocean soundtrack slips 3-7.

The last actual debut this week, Healing Sorrow by City Girl featuring In Love With A Ghost, lands at #8. Then, wrapping up the top 10 are two returns from songs fairly late in their respective chart runs: Five Fold Kiss by The Hex Girls rebounding 17-9, and Wake Up by backxwash bouncing 41-10.

Outside the top 10, a few notable re-entries have occured:

Christmas Electricity from StarKid's A VHS Christmas Carol lands at #12, becoming an official Christmas Rotation staple this year.

Comforting Sounds by Mew returns at #32, being given a 2nd push after initially underperforming early this year, not unlike We Shine At Night.

Billie Eilish's What Was I Made For? and My Chemical Romance's Summertime return at #32 and #44 respectively. This is mostly due to revisiting the year-end list from Spotify, and due to the Top 50 play count threshold for this week being much lower than average. For reference, it would typically be around 7 plays, while this week it was comfortably at 4 plays.

Notable new peaks outside the top 10 include Ichigo's STONE OCEAN rising 39-13, and illuminati hotties' December climbing 19-16.
