Quest For Glory 1: So You Want to Be a Hero | Part 1

The Adventurer's Log

Release Date: 1989

Quest for Glory caught my attention when I watched a retrospective for the first game. I bought the set and King's Quest IV, V and VI at the time, not knowing if I wanted to played 1-4 yet. I was fully intending to play Quest for Glory first, but then King's Quest took over instead and the whole series got played here. Well, I'm finally giving Quest for Glory the attention it was meant to have now. QFG is more of an adventure game RPG hybrid with a class to pick, skills to improve and fights to fight.

As always a couple notes:

There are a couple versions of the game: the original with a text parser and a remade VGA with point and click controls. I wanted to start with the original and get a natural progression through the series.

I have watched this game played, however there are some differences in things you can do and puzzle solutions based on your class, so this is going to be a mix of things I know and things I don't as they went with a different class than I'm doing. That'll be a nice mix I think.

Now...

It's time to be a hero! The town of Spielburg needs adventurers, no experience required. There are monsters to fight, brigands to defeat and a few other tasks to earn the title of Hero of Spielburg.

There are three classes to pick from: fighter, magic user and thief. I went with magic user.

Meet Cinder Win. I was going to give myself a bit of Throwing skill and forgot! Off to a good start, but at least some good Intelligence and Magic.

I have four reasons for this name:

I'm bad at coming with names and it can be a long struggle, so I thought maybe a reference would be fun. I tried anagrams of Rincewind from Discworld because I'm a dork, and Cinder Win stood out to me

One of the spells is Fire Dart which I imagine will get lots of use once I get it. Cinder (fire) will (hopefully) Win.

There are some times you need to type out your name and this will be easy to remember

It's silly for a game that is most certainly not totally serious

The game opens up with our first arrival to Spielburg.

I chatted with the Sheriff first who introduced himself as Sheriff Schultz Meistersson and his assistant Otto Von Goon, who would not chat with me but I hope he has fun with his yo-yo.

The sheriff informed me of the monsters and brigands around the area so a hero was certainly welcome. Otherwise he mostly just told me to go find out stuff for myself, so fine, I do like a good exploration.

This street also had the inn and a barbershop but the barbershop was closed. I avoided the inn for the moment and moved onward to market street.

It's a fruit stand run by a centaur! I bought some apples. I also discovered one of the barrels has potatoes and had a laugh because Rincewind, the root of Cinder Win here, wound up with a great desire for potatoes in the books for reasons. Anyway, naturally I had to buy some of the those too, though sadly they just display as vegetables in my inventory.

I also went into the Dry Goods store and got some empty flasks and another dagger. I thought... maybe I can cast zap on one of those daggers and throw it! You know, if I had put anything into my Throw skill. Which I did not. I have no idea how effective that would be but it sounded good in the moment!

Anyway, I sure did go shopping. You start out with food rations, 1 dagger, and leather armour.

Spoiler alert: mistakes were made. More on that later.

But outside I was having fun clicking around.

I moved on to another street and landed in the bar, where more clicking yielded more snark.

This only encourages me to click all the pointless places for all the responses.

I didn't end up doing much in the bar. I found the barber, anyway drunk as a skunk. I bought a beer--more money down the drain! If I had more money, I could have also bought Dragon's Breath to lose more money and also my life because it does kill you, though you are in complete fairness, warned not to drink the stuff. For the sake of death finding I'll have to try to remember trying it when I can actually afford it. There is more to this place at this point, but only for thieves, and Cinder Win is no thief, so I left.

Outside, I obviously examined more nothing and got a shameless plug for the second game.

I popped into the alley where there was a beggar.

The way I was spending my money I feel like I could ended up joining him... I did give him a silver though for some attempted information. I did learn you can get some temp work at the castle.

I popped by the inn but decided to deal with it more fully when it was nighttime.

then it was finally time for the magic shop, a very important place for me being a magic user and all. A place I should have hit up first.

I learned the shopkeeper's name was Zara. I was informed of a powerful hag, Baba Yaga who is best avoided. She cursed Baron von Spielburg. And I learned of what spells she had for sale. She also informed me that there is a powerful spell to be learned if you learn the secret of Erana's Peace. Erana was a powerful spellcaster long ago. She brought peace to the valley and there's still a spell that protects the town from violence or foul magic. And indeed if you try to attack anything you can't.

As for the spells I could purchase:

Flame Dart: 60 silver Fetch: 40 silver Open: 30 silver

The game starts you with 4 gold and 10 silver which is the equivalent of 50 silver. If I hadn't gone shopping previously, I could have afforded the open or fetch spell and I wouldn't have been far off the Flame Dart. Not being able to didn't come back to bite me at all, nosiree. In the meantime I carried on like no big deal.

Sidenote: I did bad note-keeping and someone told me about the wizard Erasmus which was quite possibly Zara but now I can't remember. He exists though and has a tower to go visit at some point!

For the final stop in town, the Adventurer's Guild. Time to see some quests!

There were five quests pinned to the board:

Reward of 50 gold for the safe return of Elsa von Spielburg - an dusty faded poster with a picture of a small child.

Wanted: Brigand Leader. Unknown appearance. Wears a cloak. Must provide proof of identity. Reward of 60 gold and the title Hero of the Realm. Main quest ho!

Another older poster with a picture of handsome arrogant young man. Reward of 50 gold for information leading to the return of Baronet Barnard von Spielburg.

Notice: Spell components need. Cash or trade for potions. Inquire at the Healer's.

Reward for return of lost ring. Inquire at the Healer's.

Goals!

There's also a registration book you can sign for a point!

I chatted with the guild master and got some more details on the Baron, Barnard and Elsa.

The baron was great until he pissed of Baba Yaga and now things are bad. He reckons she's the centre of the problem. The baron tried to make her leave and she cursed him.

Ten years ago Elsa was carried off by something that flew over the wall. The searched for her for several years until everyone gave up. Except the baron's jester, Yorick.

Barnard was a hero. He went one hunting five years and his horse returned with deep claw marks. No sign of the Baronet's body was found.

Clearly this place needs a hero, indeed!

This game has a day night cycle and I still had some daylight left, so it was time to leave town and dip my toes into exploring a bit before returning to sleep.

Close to the town gate was the healer's which is good because she had two notices up: ingredients and her missing ring. She also sells potions which would be great if I had much money.

Healing - HP Magic - MP Vigor - Stamina Undead Unguent - Undead protection

She will also pay for ingredients: cheetaur claws, troll beard, magic mushrooms and flowers from Erana's Peace.

She has two little pterosaurs, Pterry and Pteresa. Pterry likes to keep her company while Pteresa has a nest outside.

And she's missing her ring, but it must be around her place somewhere...

Now, because this isn't a blind play I already knew the ring was in Pteresa's nest, but I was lacking a way to get it. I'm a wimpy wizard with no climbing skill to climb the tree and my only spell was zap. Fetch would be great! I carried on; I'd get more money. It's fine.

I carried on.

When you're running around you may get attacked by monsters and then you have to fight or run. Or die. There have been some deaths to monsters.

Anyhoo, despite my above drama, at this point I didn't actually run into much. I didn't go far from town since I was worried about night falling and I didn't want to get locked out of town. But the threats were there!

I briefly stopped by the castle and got grumped at by a guard in the castle grounds.

I did talk to the gatekeeper but he didn't have much to tell me that I hadn't already learned from town. There is work to be done at the stable but I didn't accept the job because I was watching the time.

I also met a centaur while wandering the region!

I met Hilde! I bought potatoes! And apples. But potatoes!

He had some interesting info: he got attacked by the brigands a few months ago and there were too many for him to completely fend off. Strangely their leader intervened, and forced them to stop, ordering them not to hurt people from the town. Then the leader gave him a healing potion and had him carried to the healer's. The leader's face was hidden by a helm, but there was a compassion there unlike brigands.

Hmmm.

Evening was falling and ended my little wander so I went back to the Inn. The owners are Katta from the land of Shapeir. There was now a man there who only shows up at night, Abdullah Doo.

Abdullah was going to be the first merchant making it into the valley this year which would have made him wealthy, but he was ambushed by brigands as they crossed the pass.

His trade goods were taken, but the leader spared his life. Now he's a beggar living off the generosity of his friends.

So the bandits have magic and weirdly merciful leader...

I had some dinner--you do have to eat something once a day. And then it was off to bed!

One day done and good night to Cinder Win.

I kind of love this little sleep screen. It's cute.

Kizuna no Allele Season 2 Spoiler-Filled Review

Kizuna no Allele is an idolish music series directed by Kenichiro Komaya. Wit Studio and Signal.MD produce the series. Deko Akao wrote the show's scripts. The first season/cour aired from April to June 2023.

Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the sixty-third article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on Jan. 20, 2024.

The twelve-episode second season/cour begins with a lively opening. It continues to center around five individuals: Miracle (voiced by Ayumi Hinohara), Noelle (voiced by Yuka Nukui), Riz (voiced by Arisa Hanawa), Chris (voiced by Hikari Codama), and Quan (voiced by Rina Kawaguchi). All five go to Artist Garden (Aden) Academy. They team up as PathTLive, planning to beat their fellow students so they can enter the Virtual Grid Awards (VGA), representing the academy. However, they encounter bumps along the way.

This crops up in the first episode of this season. Miracle is impressed by another group, BRT5. At the same time, Quan's issues with self-confidence come to the surface. For one, she falsely believes that Miracle was only "being nice" to her and that she is weak, which is bringing down the group as a whole. To make matters worse, a dark-skinned character, Sofia (voiced by Yūna Kitahara), tries to recruit Chris, who growls with her, and believes Sofia is dangerous. More specifically, she sees Sofia as taking Miracle away from her, and is clearly jealous. Its one manifestation of the yuri subtext in this series. PathTLive's competitors include Zoe, Ximena, Halle, Jessie, Sarah, Ellie, and Niska, each in their own groups. This episode concludes, after Miracle's strategy is shot down and everyone wants to collaborate with artists other than Miracle, with Quan being recruited by BRT5.

Surely, there are VTuberesque post-credits scenes, intended on making the characters more personable, and a new ending sequence. Even so, Kizuna no Allele is still not my favorite, by a long shot. Despite that, it has some good parts. The series excelled in depicting Quan's struggles, insecurities, and self-doubt. She goes from not wanting to hold back the group to singing along with fellow BRT5 bandmates. She resolves to stay so she can surpass them.

At the same time, she remains friendly with Miracle in real-life. The reason for this is simple: she wants to walk by Miracle's side. She doesn't want others shining the light on her. She wants to shine the light on herself. Instead, she wants to be a "shine post" of sorts akin to characters in the Shine Post anime. Possibly, Quan is written as a positive portrayal of a trans or non binary person. This is clear, in some ways, to the viewer.

Miracle is deeply impacted by Quan's revelation of her real intentions and that the person in the atrium is herself in the real world. Miracle is upset, confused, and unsure what is going on. She meets Niska (voiced by Yūri Matsuoka), a woman who was part of BRT5, in a secluded cabin. Niska tells her that she should come back anytime she feels lost. Quan's suffering and struggling is somewhat equivalent to those having issues coming-out as queer. Quan grows a lot in the series. She goes from a shy and nervous person to a more self-confident woman fighting for a light that is hers alone. In a later episode, Halle reveals that she is pushing Quan to have more self-confidence, so she doesn't feel down about herself.

The romantic friendship between Chris and Miracle involves secret lessons and a visit to the aforementioned secret cabin. In the fifteenth episode of Kizuna no Allele, they talk with Niska about why she left BRT5. She recalls that her fellow comrades told her to focus on the group rather than being a designer. As a result, she quit the group. Her goal was to be a designer and virtual artist at the same time. In the same conversation, she argued that people don't understand each other or get along. In her view, this is because people look at how other people are different, rather than the same. Her words encourage Chris to ask Miracle to collaborate with her. However, this is a bit awkward. Noelle and Riz, good characters in their own right, are sidelined. In the end, Miracle and Chris do a music video collab.

Niska is an interesting character. She thanks Chris and Miracle after their collab, just like Jua (voiced by Nozomi Nagumo). Then she boldly declares she has "reserved" Miracle for herself, in the end of the fifteenth episode, before anyone else, including Jua, can collab with her. This confuses Miracle, who she describes as a person with potential and attractive qualities. Niska points out the latter in the sixteenth episode, saying Miracle needs someone to look out for her. Her sense of loneliness results in a scene, set on a boat in a lake (reminding me of the well-known scene in Tangled). It looks like a confession, with Miracle blushing after Niska holds her hand. Perhaps, a fan fic writer could pen a work about this.

The strong friendship between Riz and Noelle is key to the development of both characters in this season / cour. Both relax in a simulation resembling the Japanese-style inn run by her parents. It even comes with a virtual foot bath. This is perfect for Noelle, who is feeling down after seeing Quan playing with BRT5. One message from these interactions is that anxiety shouldn't be ignored. All the while, more about Noelle's backstory is explained. She believes her family see her as a "failure." She wants her family to see her true self so she can love herself. Themes such as self-empowerment are central in Kizuna no Allele.

Riz provides the right encouragement and confidence for Noelle. She pushes Noelle to make a song for her family. Noelle says that she shouldn't seek validation in numbers and argues that she cares about her family. Her mom, dad, and sister are glad. They praise her and say she is an amazing artist. This impresses Quan. She wants to practice more, until she watches the Niska-Miracle collab song, which blows her away. Later, Noelle and Riz do a collab video and train to improve their dancing. Their friendship is strong, despite some tensions.

While there might be romantic vibes between Riz and Noelle, they are more pronounced between Jua and Thea, two members of the virtual band VICONIC. In a post-credit video after the fifteenth episode, Jua says she knows Thea from the past and is friends with her in the real world. She even starts to talk about how Thea likes cute stuff. This is further emphasized in the twenty-first episode. Thea defends Jua to people who are trash talking her. She praises Jua for inspiring her dream to become a performer and calls Jua her light. Ultimately, Thea makes outfits for her and Jua. She says she wants to stand with Jua on stage as a partner rather than rival. Both say they like each other.

Other Kizuna no Allele episodes show the BRT5 members being jerks during a strange game of banana tag. In the same episode, the seventeenth in the series, Sarah's tsundere feelings toward Zoe are apparent. Again, there are some romantic vibes between them. On the other hand, none of these characters are officially in relationships. So any romance manifests in subtext and romantic friendship instead. Overall, the crisper animation, especially in non-VR dance scenes (better than season one, but still wonky), lend to a "cute girl" vibe.

By the eighteenth episode, tempers are flying between some characters. Riz is annoyed with Sofia for being too pushy after winning, and possibly cheating, in a card game. Noelle shows that she cares about Riz is going through, after Riz says she was frustrated and felt pathetic. In a manner that hints at possible romantic feelings between them, she touches Riz's chest, saying there might be some hidden data she didn't know about. Noelle says it is terrible to be frustrated. She adds that frustration gives you a chance to think about yourself and improve your skills. They bond together even more. Later, Riz teases Noelle about being a "pro".

Kizuna no Allele goes further in the nineteenth episode. There's a unit battle, Ximena crushing on Jessie, and a mysterious person in the shadows. Loneliness, lack of self-confidence, and friendship are key themes. However, this series tends to raise the stakes, but not give viewers the pay off, making such story development weak. While saying this, some elements are executed well. I liked how wishes were represented as butterflies in the twentieth episode. The series connects this with the idea that people decide their own forms and break through their shells (of sorts). This is especially the case for Miracle. She can't choose one wish out of her many wishes. On the other hand, this idea is less effective than Nanami's statement in Revolutionary Girl Utena: "if we don't crack the world's shell, we will die without ever truly being born."

Undoubtedly there were some fun recommended videos. For instance, in one video, Jua is disappointed at lack of similarities with Quan, with both loving heavy metal, rad and smashing music videos, and drama. Even so, these elements are mostly subpar. This is coupled with episodes of inconsistent length and bizarre "hip" songs. I did like the camaraderie between Zoey, Ximena, and Sofia. The latter weirdly wants to put an A.I. in her head. She echoes Tao in Carole & Tuesday. He makes the "perfect" songs with A.I., hoping they will become chart-toppers. The curiosity of Ximena in Chris was strange (she even put a tracker on her!). This mixes with a mysterious school principal and Chris praising Miracle. She says Miracle helped her understand herself and her connections to others.

The last two episodes of Kizuna no Allele are some of the best. PathTLive gets trapped in a virtual world. They can't escape thanks to Ada's efforts. She is rewriting all the network systems and has unclear motivations. This poses a dilemma for Miracle. The code of their current linkverse needs to be deleted so they can escape. Miracle she doesn't want to do that because they have so many memories there. In presumed series finale, Miracle finally agrees, after Quan offers to delete marumaru (her other avatar). She says that you can't touch or see memories, but that they don't disappear or hold you back. Instead, these memories encourage you to go forward. This optimism, however, would be negated by repressed memories.

In a strange twist, they don't get to Sofia's linkverse. They find themselves in a nether space. All four band members are separated. Each of them feels some level of trauma. After hearing music from other performers, they escape and reach their destination. As Chris puts it, this new linkverse is where they can be or do anything. Magically, and absurdly, they all claim, in a hokey way, the music is "in their hearts." The band performs a song with Love Live! vibes. Even so, songs in that franchise are better.

The episode ends with Ada worrying about "danger" of their music. The Principal is overjoyed at the possibility. In some ways, the audience gets a payoff. The characters hang out and having fun. PathTLive wins the contest and goes on stage in new outfits for an awards show. Ai watches over them like a guardian angel. Overall, the visuals of this season / cour are better than the show, as is the music and animation. Even so, the show is still mediocre. More could have been done with these characters to make the show more effective.

Critics have panned the series. They've called it strange, slop, cynical, corporate-poisoned, a showcase for virtual idols, and better than Alice Gear Aegis Expansion. Others called it a cash-in which doesn't capture VTuber culture, tiresome, and incoherent. While these criticisms have merit, the second season, more accurately, had an engaging storyline filled with intrigue and depth. Surely it isn't as strong as My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 or as compelling as Selection Project. But it had some value, especially when it comes to interpersonal relations between characters and yuri subtext.

Starfield - Első benyomások

Alaptörténet (spoiler!): Egy idegen bolygón találsz egy ismeretlen, idegen eredetű tárgyat, amit megérintve különös látomásaid támadnak! Nem, nem hülyültem meg, nem a Mass Effecttel kezdtem el véletlenül játszani, tényleg ugyanaz a sztori :DDD

A grafikája szép, de 2023-ban inkább csak erős átlagosnak nevezhető, mint szupernek.

Technikai rész: Semmi problémát nem tapasztaltam bő két óra játék alatt, pedig a szokásos hivatásos fikázók előre közölték hogy úgyis játszhatatlan bughalmaz lesz. 60 fps döccenés nélkül.

Idióta npc-k és dialógusok: Rögtön kapsz egy űrhajót, meg egy smartass segédrobotot, aki pont úgy viselkedik, mint a Morrowind óta minden follower: beáll az ajtónyílásokba, melee harcban beledől az ütéseidbe, ha lopózól, tuti elkezd vaktában lövöldözni, stb. Pont annyira hasznos, mint Dogmeat. Rögtön az elején konfliktusba keveredtem egy űrkalóz-bandával. Végül némi tömegmészárlás után elértem a főnökükhöz.

Én: - Te haver, miért akarsz kinyírni minket?

Ő: - Mert a hajód teli van drága zsákmányolt kincsekkel!

Én: - De nem is.

Ő: - De igen.

Én: - De nem.

Ő: - Tényleg?

Én: - Tényleg.

Ő: - A francba, akkor ez nem jött be. Szevasztok.

Kész küldetés vége.

Megérte? - Nekem igen, de aki nem fanatik Bethesda rpg player, az várja meg, míg olcsóbb lesz (ez mondjuk nem manapság fog megtörténni). A premium editionhez jár egy vödör extra cucc is az early access mellé, meg persze folyamatosan jönnek majd a patchek, de majdnem 40 rongy - az azért baromi durva.

I was in the mood to write down a little personal speculation post on this companion concept art piece that was shown in the Behind the scene video in 2020, because although we can't really conclude anything from this and like Patrick Weekes said, the concept art is more about conveying a certain mood than anything substantial really, I just think it'll be fun to look at this later on, if only to see how wrong I was. :D

(Also, I got a bit carried away and speculated a bit about the next protagonist as well later on, if anyone’s interested.)

So, going one by one and starting at the far left of this line up, let’s see who we’ve got here.

1.) Mrs. Victoria Secret runway model, coming in style. I saw someone randomly referring to this silhouette as Lindsay Lohan once, which gave me such a good laugh, I decided to stick with it. lol

So Lindsay Lohan over here came up in another concept art as the "distraction decoy". It’s not clear but it’s possible that she’s also seen in another picture as a mage, which is why I included the image above. There's not much more to say about her, other than there's also an interesting speculation floating around that this person could be Calpernia!

I think, out of all the potential characters that could make a return, Calpernia has one of the best chances to come back as a companion.

First off, no matter what decisions you made in DAI, unlike Samson, she always ends up being alive or with her whereabouts unknown. She also has an interesting backstory which is strongly tied to pretty much everything that's wrong with Tevinter, her intentions were ultimately good and a villain turned ally makes for an interesting premise. So I would be all for this! :D

2.) Next up, we got our highly anticipated, already everyone's favorite character, Beautiful Buff Badass Qunari Lady. And that's about all I can say here, too. 😂 It was about time, I can't wait to meet her, she's 100% going to be there (and by about 99% chance written by Patrick Weekes) and she's gonna kick many ass. The question is though, will she be Tal-Vashoth? Full on Qunari? What’s her affiliation, considering the invasion? And most importantly, will her hair be this lush and long in game??

3.) Third looks like a rogue. And that's about everything I've got here, sorry. 😂 Maybe he’s a fog warrior from Seheron? What do they look like, anyway? I’ve seen a lot of people wishing for someone like that as a companion.

4.) It's Maevaris.

No, I don't have any evidence to back this up whatsoever (besides maybe the very Tevinter-ish looking attire), but regardless I'm 100% sure this is Mae and I'm 1000% sure she will be a companion and if not, I will change my url to booboo-the-fool.

Ever since I read the comics, like many others, Mae has been one of my favorites and number one spot on my list for characters I'd like to see as a companion in DA4! So I’m really looking forward to finally meet her. Mae, Dorian and the Lucerni are going to be very valuable allies in Tevinter and she’s just awesome all around! <3

5.) This one I like to call the mysterious "Shotgun Girl". I mean, if there’s one thing missing in DA, it’s shotguns of course. lol Though that thing she’s holding could be anything really, I'm still trying to figure out what's going on with the design here. 😂

Given that we know for certain that they DID edit other concept art pieces in this video by comparing the ones they showed in the BTS trailer with the ones in BioWare’s 25th anniversary book, to me, this looks almost like they went "Let's just put a blanket on this one because otherwise people will clearly recognize this character, so just hide the spoiler by literally covering it up". lol So maybe it's a character we already know? Might this “shotgun” not actually be a real shotgun after all, but something else, maybe? 👀 And speaking of editing...

The shape of that gun like weapon is also quite suspicious to me.

It is just me, or is that literally Bianca??

I mentioned it before on here, but ever since that 2020 VGA teaser with Varric’s narration and the fact that this weapon was the only thing that was edited out completely.. As much as I don’t want it to happen, my gut tells me Varric is going to die and Bioware is trying to hide the fact that this is the person who will inherit Bianca? Let’s hope I’m wrong. 😭 Maybe they just built a second one, who knows. 😂

lol No, but seriously. This guy looks like he straight up jumped out of an old AC game. And while we’re at it, you know who else gave me huge Ezio Auditore vibes? That’s right, none other than the grandson of the First Talon of the Antivan Crows himself, Lucanis Dellamorte from “The Wigmaker Job” in Tevinter Nights.

Out of all the new characters introduced in that book, besides maybe Strife from the first chapter or Evka the warden, I think he’s the most likely to appear in DA4. Especially with how that chapter had such an open ending (like, seriously, am I the only one who’s really excited for Zara Renata, the magistra who still wants to kill him? Like, that name on its own is something else lol) And yes, I know that in this one short story that was published on the last DA Day, it seemed like something happened to him and that his cousin Illario thinks he’s dead now, but I don’t really buy it? He was just way too much of an interesting guy to just be killed off like that. Maybe he went incognito or faked his own death in order to hide from the venatori this Zara Renata sent out to get him. 😂

7.) Let’s just call him “Not Sten”. lol He looks fun at parties. If this guy ends up being in the game, I wonder if he and the Qunari Lady will get along.

8.) Last but not least, it’s Mr. Candlehead, Ghost Rider Jr, “The Weird One”, or simply “Manfred” as I like to call them, like that one skeleton butler guy from Tevinter Nights.

Watch BioWare make this guy, despite appearances, the one with the most sane and rational personality out of this whole squad. 😂

I think we can all without a doubt agree that this guy comes from Nevarra. Or the Grand Necropolis, more specifically. If Solas manages to tear down the Veil, it’ll be interesting to see how this guy will be affected by that, given that it’s essentially a corpse possessed by a spirit?

So in conclusion, what seems to be missing here is a (visible!) elf or dwarven character, which is weird since I assume they would want to cover all of the races and we all know how much everyone wishes for a romancable Dwarf Lady.. So maybe they're keeping them for a surprise? :D

This might be an unpopluar opinion, but I actually don't want it to be Harding or any returning character. Unless it's Shale. She can come back any time. 😂

We also can’t really tell who out of this line up could be Bellara or Davrin, the names that were revealed in addition to the short clips of the VAs Jee Young Han and Ike Amadi recording their lines in the BTS video.

So all in all, I'm just hoping for the gang this time around to have some truly chaotic "Suicide Squad" type energy, since we are still talking about the group of people that is voluntarily going up against the Dread Wolf, an invasion, a potential Double Blight and probably a bunch of other “Gods”, which I like to throw in here as a side note, my money is on Ghilan’nain and Dirthamen getting unleashed, going solely by Dirthamen’s vallaslin matching up perfectly with the figure in the latest mural and Ghilan’nain simply because she got so much emphasis in Tevinter Nights. :D

(If this really turns out to be Ghilan’nain or any of the Evanuris btw, all I wish for is to see the Dread Wolf fighting this giant Centipede Lovecraftian Monster Lady. 🙏)

And while we’re at it, I want to briefly talk about the next protagonist and what I think could make for an interesting concept.

In Tevinter Nights, we got introduced to the institution of the Lords of Fortune, a guild of treasure hunters founded in Rivain. Thanks to TN, we also know that some of them are specialized in infiltration and are masterful at disguising and slipping into other roles. Because of that, they’re also hired to obtain vital information or act as an escort/guide for dangerous expeditions. But above all, Lords of Fortune are seeking but one thing, treasure.

So. Keeping all this in mind... Can you name me one particular artifact that has been the center of attention, handed from one owner to another for literal years now, as all of them were trying to make some form of profit from it but ultimately always had to pay with their lives for, like a curse?

That’s right. This flippin thing.

The last chapter of TN written by Patrick Weekes, as well as the latest comic series, was all about where the damned thing could possibly be. If you’re like me, you didn’t believe a single thing about the story that Sol - *ahem* excuse me - “the Bard” told at the end of TN, which could mean that the whereabouts of the Idol are very much still unknown to us now, and to Solas as well, even though he tried to convince us otherwise.

BUT we know one thing for sure. He needs the idol. And because he spared her life, Charter now knows, which means the Inquisition knows, too.

We also know that Varric is in charge of getting the right people for what remained of the Inquisition now. And who would be better suited for the job of finding something like the idol than, you guessed it, a treasure hunter.

Look, what I’m trying to say is, the idol as a highly valuable and potentially profitable artifact would be the perfect motivation for a Lord of Fortune as the next protagonist to go search for it and thus get involved in the whole Solas deal without even knowing who he is.

Now, how does all this factor in with the different factions that have been presented to us in the VGA teaser and all of the concept art that has been published since then?

As I mentioned before, Lords of Fortune can be specialized in infiltration and disguising in order to get the treasure they’re looking for.

This is purely speculation now, but let me suggest this idea: What if we, the player, start off as an underdog no name treasure hunter who one day simply decides to infiltrate any of these factions seen above, to get information regarding the idol and make some money (perhaps even because of Varric)? It could even be something resembling different origin stories, like depending on which faction you choose, your game starts with a different mission to infiltrate them, something goes wrong, and that’s how the underdog protagonist accidentally ends up getting entangled in a convoluted world altering plot? lmao

.....Or none of this happens and you simply choose your faction and that’s it. 😂 But it’s fun to think about at least?

Varric’s teaser narration in the DA4 teaser, when it hits the (flipped) picture below, suggests it’s someone we know whom we’ve lost.

Some folks have asked you your thoughts on Sonic stories. But what about other games stories? Tell us some games You really enjoyed narratively, please. Merry Christmas, I wish you the very best.

The very first season of The Walking Dead was pretty incredible. Maybe the only Telltale game series where I was kind of on the edge of my seat every episode, fully hooked in and waiting for the next one to drop. I remember the Spike TV VGAs that year, when they brought those guys up for their award, and they played Clementine's theme again as they walked up on stage... just hearing that music again felt like such an emotional gut-punch in a way no other game has ever impacted me before.

The Beginner's Guide turned out to be strangely impactful. I don't know how much I should really say about it, because I feel like it would be really easy to spoil what's important to the tone and mood of the game. Even the game's own description on Steam basically says nothing about what the game's story is. I should play it again; I haven't since it first came out, but it was one of those things where after it was over it stuck with me for the whole rest of the day.

Portal 2 is as close to an ending as Valve has ever put in any of their games, and it's insane, beautiful and incredible. The final send off just before credits roll genuinely made me misty-eyed.

I've said it before, but the writing in Fortnite: Save the World is definitely a favorite. The story itself is difficult to recommend, because it's very inconsistent and a little hard to follow. But that's also sort of the point? The threat in Save the World is an unknowable, cosmic, reality-altering force of evil. Considering how often they joke about screwing up the space-time continuum, you get the idea that you shouldn't worry so much about what does or does not make sense. What matters is how strong the characters themselves are, and I love the Fortnite cast dearly. The main bummer is that Epic deliberately chose to deny players a proper ending, but there's hours and hours of story quests to enjoy before it falls off a cliff. (And you can always just listen to the quest audio on its own.)

I genuinely think the storytelling of Doom 2016 is brilliant insofar as the Doom Slayer basically spits in the eye of every storytelling convention most games rely on. He has no time for exposition, excuses, or lore. He cannot be reasoned with or stopped. He was dropped in to a mess, has to clean it up and is going to leave a trail of destruction in his wake as payment. Shame Doom Eternal had to 180 on that.

Finally, I mentioned this on a stream recently (by which I mean I spoiled it, and am going to spoil it again here), but there was a Half-Life 2 mod called "Nestlings" inspired by ideas put forth by H.P. Lovecraft. If you're familiar with the Lovecraft story "From Beyond," about dimensions that exist beyond the veil of our reality, Nestlings deals in similar ideas. In Neal Stephenson's amazing, seminal CRYPTONOMICON, a key plot-point relates to Van Eck Freaking (AKA TEMPEST), in which tuned radio antennas are used to read a computer screen through a wall by intercepting its electronic noise.

The GNU Radio project is a free software implementation of a software-defined radio: a radio whose tuning and de/modulating properties are determined by code, rather than by the vibrational frequencies of a crystal.

It's designed to eavesdrop on keyboards, HDMI, VGA, and other electronic I/O systems through solid barriers.

All of this is cool and gnarly, but even better is the historical context of GNU Radio.

In 1992, EFF fought the Bernstein case, the case that legalized civilian access to working cryptography, striking down the NSA's longstanding ban on crypto.

EFF's winning argument was the "code is speech" - that is, source code is a form of expressive speech for the purposes of the First Amendment and thus any law that controls source code infringes on our Constitutional rights.

That 9th Circuit Appeals decision paved the way for all the security tools you use today - everything from checking to make sure that your pacemaker upgrade hasn't been tampered with to keeping your financial transactions secure.

GNU Radio was created by Eric Blossom and funded by John Gilmore as a way to use the Bernstein decision to lock in freedom for software defined radios and the general purpose computers they ran on.

They understood that the regulatory model for radios -  designing them to only operate on specific frequencies - would come into conflict with software freedom as SDRs proliferated. Eventually, commercial radio devices would just be computers running SDR code.

When that happened, the only way to ensure these devices were incapable of straying from their approved use would be to prohibit users from changing the code on those computers - and since ANY computer could be an SDR, this collision could mean lockdown for ALL computers.

The idea of GNU Radio was to have a functional, free/open SDR when that day came. It was possible that a court would find that compiled code was also protected speech, but sourcecode is obviously more speechlike, and so FLOSS tracked better with the Bernstein decision.

This may sound like a remote possibility, but within a couple years of the project's founding, this EXACT scenario cropped up.

The Broadcast Flag was an effort to do an end-run around the fact that it's illegal for US terrestrial broadcasters to encrypt their signals.

Instead, the broadcasters, studios and CE/IT companies proposed that the unencrypted signals would have a "flag" (a single bit) that all devices capable of being a digital TV tuner would have to look for.

If it was set to "1," these devices would have to encrypt the signal AFTER they received it, and not allow unencrypted output. Basically, every device manufacturer in the country would be required by law to PRETEND that over-the-air broadcasts were encrypted.

And since ALL PCs were capable of being a DTV receiver with the addition of a software defined radio, that meant that we were on a track to banning all computers unless they were designed to refuse to run programs that hadn't been approved by a corporate consortium.

My first day on the job at EFF was going to the very first Broadcast Flag meeting (actually, it was the day BEFORE I was hired and we were still working on the paperwork, but this was important so I got on a plane to LA with Seth Schoen and Fred von Lohmann).

The Broadcast Protection Discussion Group was the most smoke-filled, dirty-dealing, skullduggery-filled room I ever sat in. Over the months and years that followed, I saw so much dirty-tricking, so many double-bluffs and backstabs. It was amazing and horrible.

And what's more, despite our best efforts to head off this disaster, they succeeded, and got the @FCC to regulate the Broadcast Flag into existence (with the small win that FCC commissioners, not Hollywood studios, would be in charge of what programs were allowed).

But EFF has a diversity of tactics at its disposal. Where activism failed, technology and law prevailed. We sued the FCC along with the American Library Association and Public Knowledge and won!

And part of that victory turned on the fact that GNU Radio proved that the FCC wasn't just regulating radio devices - they had arrogated to themselves the power to regulate any device with a general-purpose computer in it.

See, originally i was like, "hmm, lemme put my faves on here"

I used so much of the sticker sheet, that this was all I had leftover!

These are the flawed sticker sheet (which i chose), which has slight color incorrections (like coco's hair), but the rest of it is just so vibrant irl!!!

Also i apparently spent 2hrs doing this instead of eating, OOPS. It didn't feel like 2hrs lol, MAYBE 1 now but legit thought 30 min passed by lmfao

Prolog :  Ceritanya pengen nonton bareng gitu tapi dirumah saja menghindari pandemi bareng gaby, bang bram, rani, dan bang dimas. Udah ancang-ancang Bang Dimas mau bawa proyektor kantor, aku mau bawa vga connector tapi buyar karena proyektor ada semutnya/buram haha. Akhirnya setelah banyak ngobrol di rumah gaby dan bang bram terpilihlah Minari dengan tonton dilaptop letak kursi dan speaker bluetooth , First impression : duh pengen refresh kok kayaknya film berat, after movie : keren, ada bahan update tulisan yak :D  Review : Setting filmnya klasik-klasik gimana gitu. Minari adalah sebuah film drama Amerika Serikat tahun 2020, yang ditulis dan disutradarai oleh Lee Isaac Chung. Film tersebut menampilkan Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Youn Yuh-jung, Will Patton, Alan Kim dan Noel Kate Cho. Perspektif Saya :

Ceritanya menurutku deket banget sama real life pasangan (walau belum punya pasangan wkwkw) kayak gimana cewe tuh realistik banget mungkin terkesan itung-itungan atau pesimis, terus gimana cowo tuh idealis banget merasa udah paling bener dah. Kayak gimana si istri tuh udah pengen hidup sederhana aja dengan kerjaan rutin meriksa kelamin ayam (baru tahu sumpah yang beginian bisa jadi kerjaan) sedangkan suami merasa harus keluar dari zona nyaman untuk bisa mencari kesuksesan, trus gimana buat suami mungkin bukan hal yang kecil tapi besar buat cewe pas ada adegan ke rumah sakit kontrol anak, eh si cowo malah sibuk bawa sayurnya kan justru sayang kalau sayurnya dibiarin busuk dimobil sedangkan si cewe tuh pengen fokus dululah ke anaknya. (pas nonton ini rata-rata cenderung gemes ama si cewe hhe tapi saya kaykanya bakal bertindak hampir diri deh tanpa sadar)

Kita tuh gak bisa memaksakan sesuatu, ada hal yang memang kita perlu dibantu. Kayak pas si cowo mau buat kebun kan terus ada tukang yang bisa deteksi air tapi dia gak mau pakai karena merasa bisa sendiri alhasil kebunnya kering. Terus juga ada sesi yang awalnya dia kayak berat gitu mau mempekerjakan orang dikebunnya tapi alhasil itu orang membantu banget.

Kita tuh terjebak sama paradigma umum kayak misal ibu itu harus lemah lembut, nenek itu harus penuh manja, ayah itu harus sukses. Ketika tokoh nenek dateng dan nyentrik justru yang awalnya buat anak-anak pasangan ini gak suka akhirnya malah peduli banget sama neneknya. Neneknya justru malah bawa banyak hal baru yang bermanfaat kayak kesehatan si anak, juga terutama si minari yang bisa akhirnya digunakan. kayak ketika anak yang perempuan takut kehutan karena ada ular, padahal neneknya bilang ‘lebih baik yang terlihat sehingga kita bisa tahu musti berbuat apa, ketimbang yang bersembunyi’, kalau ngikutin si anak cewe mah gak ketanem itu minari dan gak ketemu sumber air untuk sementara.

Endingnya buat saya bagus banget, gimana pada akhirnya meski rumah kebakar tapi disitu justru jadi titik mereka bersatu kembali, disitu satu keluarga bersama memulai bukan hanya merasa satu orang atau yang lain punya porsi berjuang lebih (sorry kalau spoiler).

Stick It (2006)

Stick it main character is this girl named Haley. When they first introduce her in the movie she's on a trick bike with two other friends named Frank and Poot in a neighborhood construction site. The three were on their bikes doing tricks in a empty pool when this skaterboy came up with his group and wanted the pool. Neither group could agree so they had a bet they had to go from the roof land in the pool and show off their best tricks whoever wins gets the pool. Skaterboy went first he started off ok then fell then, then it was Haley's turn she did well but at the end she broke through glass and the cops came and she got in trouble with the law. The court decided that she would go to this place called VGA (Vickerman Gymnastics Academy). When she gets there she refuses to do anything when she does she makes a joke out of it. The coach named coach Vickerman (Vick) doesn't want to deal with it he threatens her that if she doesn't participate shell end up in jail. During this we also found out that she was an elite gymnast who walked out on worlds (competition before Olympics). Anyways Haley ends up agreeing but says she’ll only train in the old gym so he lets her trained in the old gym. skip ahead the team is at a competition everyone is watching Haley because she walked out on worlds and lost the US gold. Someone throws a drink on her and she goes to buy a new leo and sees her mom. Then causes a bunch of flashbacks and she tries to walk out of the competition the coach finds out why she walked out on worlds (no spoilers) lets her walk. Skip ahead again and they're at worlds the judges are unfair so all the gymnasts team out for the scoring to prove a point.

So for starters on my opinion this has always been one of my favorite movies ever!! I skipped a lot on the explanation but its the main highlights of the movie. So for starters I liked how they introduced her she was this rebel wild child then through out this movie you find out the deeper parts of her. The movie put a funnier spin on gymnastics but it also shows all the work and the frustration of it. Gymnastics take a lot of work to do and even then you deal with the pain and time that comes with it. The judging and people aren't always fair, there's going to be unfair docked points for stupid rules. It shows the gymnastics world fairly well besides when they were messing with the judges to prove a point. You have this rebel girl who was heartbroken and walked out on something she loved but one person was able to change all of it and got her back to it and during that helped fix the gymnast world.
