Miriel’s Depression

This is pure speculation.

But what if one of the reasons Miriel was depressed was bc she knew her husband didn’t love her anymore. I mean, with him moving on in 1 valinor year (and even for humans moving on from a dead spouse, one that left an infant behind, within a year is not a sign of things being ok) it really wouldn’t be that surprising if Finwe stopped loving Miriel long before her death.

Furthermore, what if the only reason Miriel even went to Valinor in the first place was because she loved Finwe, and she left the rest of her family (who didn’t want to go) behind?

Heck, what if she did not want to be the queen, but because she loved Finwe she went with it anyways? What if she was a hunter, like celegorm, who prefered to live away from council meetings and society balls? And the reason she started to weave was to escape the golden cage she became trapped in?

What if, all of this misery she persevered through because she loved her husband, because she loved her to-be-born son...

Only for Her to be slapped in the face with the realization that Finwe no longer loved her?

Look, we know nothing about Miriel, other than she was Finwe’s first wife and Feanor’s mother, but, seeing as some traits that the feanorians showcase are clearely not from Finwe (and as far as i know Nerdanel’s side of the family) i’m willing to bet that things like Feanor’s drive , passion and fire, and celegorm’s love of the outdoors and hunting (which ambarussa also share i think?) are all parts of Miriel that are shinning through.

So, if that’s the case, what exactly would cause such a soul to choose to lay down and die?

I will bet you that not everything is what it seems in her and Finwe’s marriage, or her life in aman.

(And, this is even more speculation that’s probably not cannon but food for thought, but what if Finwe and Indis had an affair behind her back? Albeit an emotional one, but one none the less? I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, but Finwe and Indis’s sudden and quick relationship is really sus)

Anyway, these are just some thoughts i had, considering we don’t really know what transpired between Miriel, Finwe, and Indis other than the basics and the end result. But it’s at complete odds with everything we know about elvish behavior, and i am not going to brush Feanor’s reaction to his new step-mother aside because it’s WAY to strong in my opinion, especially since there are cases like Elrond and Elros, where Maedhros and Maglor literally slaughtered Sirion and kidnapped them for a jewel, and yet the two boys still have a positive relationship with M&M. Clearly, there probably is additional things that caused Feanor to be so hostile to Indis and be at odds with his father, despite Finwe apparently favoring Feanor or smth.

It just does not add up.

And, considering that the silmarillion is written from the point of view of an in-verse historian who is biased against the feanorians, it also really would not surprise me if information that would paint Feanor in a more understanding light would be left out, either accidentally or on purpose.

Am i focusing way to much on the Weird af relationship between Miriel, Finwe and Indis and how it affected Feanor, especially considering the little information we are given on it? Some would say yes.

However, i maintain the fact that this weird relationship and the resulting family dynamic between the Finweons is the crucial starting point for everything that happened in the silmarillion, and even stretched all the way through the 3rd age with the One Ring. Therefor, i believe that trying to understand exactly what went wrong, and what we were not told, is worth focusing on as, without this one fucked up relationship drama, the history of the elves would likely have been very different.

Why is everyone rooting for it takes two? Tbh its one of my least fav gaming videos. I havent even watched the whole thing bc i get bored… why do yall like it so much??

i am so sorry you feel this way bc it takes two is one of the Best dapg we have ever gotten--revival run or otherwise.

despite dnp's arguably most popular playthrough (undertale) being composed of long videos, dapg doesn't generally post Long videos. so it's sheer length of 52 minutes is a revelation.

combine that with gameplay that both of them get to partake in, and you already know you're in for an excellent ride. again, they don't generally play a lot of 2 player computer games, despite us knowing they spend a Lot of time gaming together, so already it feels special since they both get to play.

the game itself is very dnp-coded, which they even comment on. it's a creative exploration through an emotional and difficult time, and yet, it still has time for humour, teamwork, and enjoyment. this game is a Journey--that's the whole point. and dnp are Very good at navigating it, in the way they do things best: together. (and you can't tell me phil's multiple 'i am your husBaand' didn't rewire your brain)

the grandness of the it takes two video is in their synchronicity. we've got video evidence of them struggling to play co-op games together--they even think it's going to go poorly, as it takes two has a Reputation for being quite difficult, particularly the boss battles. there's a reason it's the marraige counselling game, in a sense. and yet they skated through it. constantly on the same page. it's symphonic.

alongside that it's just a pleasure to sit down and watch. the bants are on point, the vibes are focused but chill, and the length of the video plus the quick turnaround upload speed during gamingmas meant that there wasn't a lot of editing to distract or disrupt the vibe. it's a very raw and unfiltered dnp--it's cozy. there's something about it that's just calming for the soul.

i enjoy getting to feel the Flow of a story, especially alongside the people i'm watching play it. despite the varied environments and quick-paced sections, i never felt lost in regards to the narrative (unlike their Brothers video). but still, there was high-octane moments! space for bants! a little bit of a respite in all the chaos.

maybe i need to say it with my full chest but trust and communication are my kink and no dnp upload demonstrate this better than it takes two. as fond as i am of dan's outbursts and yelling, there is nothing like watching dnp on the same page just absolutely crushing a task. there's a time and a place for both, but i much prefer them both having a good time as opposed to constantly bickering over something (hence my preference for the it takes two gameplay compared to the bread & fred video, though i'm curious your take on that particular video as it's quite the contrast)

almost everyone Knows what we come to dapg for, and it's not usually the gaming. this video takes that and makes the gaming Part of it in the best way possible.

Wants to get married to you, in fact she sees that as a huge goal for the relationship between the two of you so hopefully youre in for the long haul!

After marriage she becomes bolder and more open to affection with you, now no longer feeling that theres a line that needs to be heeded... after all, you're officially in it now!

She wears her ring on a chain around her neck, and keeps it tucked in her clothing when shes training/exterminating

If you're an exterminator like her, shes more than willing to let you fight by her side during the exterminations... you have each others back

A new side of her seems to come out when doing her job, shes passionate about it- words and feelings begin to slip out when shes otherwise under control

i definitely don't think one is more acceptable than the other, but i can see where you'd think that thought process could end up leading to acceptance of the less debilitating form of misogyny. but i don't think that the problem of people normalizing catcalling is really rooted in people taking other forms of misogyny more seriously. maybe i'm wrong though on that, so i'd have to think about it.

but regardless, i worry this thinking (like "slippery slope") isn't practical. because people can focus on helping women or people in general in more than one way while still accepting that some women are in more imminent danger. ik we are just talking theoretically and about our thoughts (like THINKING one is more acceptable), but how would you practically go about considering all forms of misogyny equal to one another? i don't understand where this is coming from ! i recognize that certain forms of misogyny are more severe than others, but that doesn't mean its stopped me from having real heart to hearts with my younger cousins or friends about catcalling.

i see the common denominator of "kicked out of women's bathroom," but personally don't find cis vs trans women's experience w that to be comparable. i definitely have heard of cis women being considering "too masculine" or "manly" to be in the women's bathroom, but (and this is purely anecdotal so anyone can correct me), i've seen it based around two things. 1. rooted in misogynoir and masculinizing black women. and 2. like you said butches or lesbians (, and i assume theres been misogynoir/lesbophobia crossover). i don't think this is comparable to trans women getting kicked out of women's bathrooms for a couple reasons i'll explain, but i do have to say that this is a time when i am sadly a bit resentful of trans activism because the two examples are rooted in racism and lesbophobia, and they are in turn exacerbated by a world in which male people CAN enter a female only space. its opened up a new outlet for this bigotry

but i will continue on why i don't see these as comparable.

if/when trans women have a fear of being kicked out of the women's bathroom because they look like a male, they have the option to enter the men's restroom. that is always an option. i understand that often there is also a fear of getting physically attacked in the male restroom, and so when picking which discomfort is preferable, they are going to pick the women's bathroom. this frustrates me because now cis women have to prevent male violence, while also opening their space to it. (alternatively, they have to prevent discomfort from males, while also opening their space to it.) this is not a fair trade off and its the responsibility of male people to take on that burden as opposed to female people.

next i'm 100% sure you'd agree, but racism and lesbophobia are always unjustified. to compare a black woman to a male, or a lesbian to a male is wrong. and im confident you'd claim comparing a trans woman to a male (or man/boy) is also bigoted, but i'd like to push back on that. trans women are still male people, and regardless of the terminology we use (TIM, trans woman, man, etc), they were socialized male. male people make up the VAST majority of sexually violent criminals. an understandably distressing, but important fact is that trans women exhibit a male pattern of violence (see here). (the original freedom of information act request and data is online. if you need help finding it lemme know cuz i've done it before and im sure i can do it again.)

so my point in all of this is that female people being kicked out of the restroom is undeniably unfair and unjustified, but i don't find it comparable to trans women being kicked out of the women's restroom. i can sympathize and imagine by what people have said that its hard and shameful or embarrassing or angering to be not accepted into these spaces, and i can try and understand how upsetting my perspective would be to a trans woman or trans people in general, while i also recognize that female only spaces are a practical safety tool and this is a rational safety concern.

when you gave this example you said "the first one, for instance," so if you ever have time, i'd love to talk through the other ones. i'd also like to point you to the socialization post i made a while back that i linked in my previous reply in case you haven't read it!

also for the last paragraph you wrote, pretend i didn't say government! i stated my perimeters of what i felt comfortable with a government (or entity w a large budget) doing, but i wholly recognize how corrupt governments are and how my perimeters are not theirs. (basically my statement was not an observation but a preference.)

a better example would be if you were given a large sum of money, i find it hard to believe you'd donate equally to every cause (you believe is worthwhile) out there. id ask you what is your solution practically? because practically i don't think its realistic to try and go into these conversations thinking all forms of misogyny (individual ones like catcalling/fgm/forced marriage, or broader forms like interpersonal/systemic) are equally atrocious, and i think when comparing the severity and rates of misogyny trans women vs cis women face at the hands of male people, its imperative female people (trans identifying or cis) are protected.

You let out a long chuckle before wrapping your hand around his throat. 'Don't think just because Im grateful to you, I won't kill you. The only reason I haven't just killed you, is because your still of use to me.'

Releasing his throat, I pulled back, dusting my coat. Before extending my hand. 'Now, I need your word you won't share this information with anyone.' You growled, extending your hand.

Your hand begining to give of the familiar glow of magic.

It wasn't hard to find Stella, the yelling had only gotten louder, now accompanied by fire... lots of fire.

When you found her, she was screaming at stolas, the field around her ablaze in purplish flames.

Now, you were quiet content to watch Stella give her "Husband" a verbal thrashing.

But when you saw there daughter, staring down from the second floor window. The poor girl looked in utter distress at her parents fighting.

You moved forward quickly, ignoring the pain as the flames licked your body.

Reaching her, you spun her around, looking her dead in the eyes. You stroked her cheek, telling her you were there for her.

Tears welled in her eyes, the flames around you slowly died down until you were just holding the sobbing woman in a field of Burt grass.

You held her close as she cried into your chest. Holding her close, you looked up, meeting Stolas' gaze as he looked at the two of you.

You couldn't help but Shooting dangers at the prince, he was the cause of this, and you wanted him to know it.

You carefully picked the woman up, carrying her away.

You entered the palace, you locked eyes with Stolas one last time before letting the ghost of a smile spreading across your mouth.

You carried her into the palace, backtracking all the way to her study.

It took some work, but you opened the door, carrying her in, placing her on the large lounge set against the far wall.

Laying her down, you pulled out your handkerchief. Wiping away her tears you asked her gently 'Are you alright?'

Stella just shook her head, rubbing her arm across her eyes. 'No. No Im not' she said, her voice thick with emotion. 'There's no where. Theres nothing I can do, nothing without that Fucking Imp ruining it.'

She broke down into a new fit of tears, pulling you close she clung to you like the world would fall out beneath her.

She sobbed into your chest, crying for what seemed like hours. Releasing all the frustration she had seemed to pent up. You just held her close as she did.

It was as she finally calmed down, that there was a knock on the door. Getting up, you walked over before cautiously opening it.

It was her daughter. And she looked quite concerned.

'You must be Octavia' you told her gently, taking her hand with a small bow. Octavia spoke gently, asking you 'Is my mum alright?'

Not sure how to answer, you moved out of the way, allowing her to enter the room.

Seeing her daughter, Stella quickly wiped her face, cleaning herself up a little before saying to her 'Hello darling.'

Octavia said it back before taking a seat on the couch.

The two shared some gentle words with each other, Octavia seeming very concerned for her, but you could tell your presence was holding her back.

So you gently spoke up. 'I'll go have some tea brought up. Give you two a moment.' Stella gave you a thankful look, Octavia giving you a thoughtful glance before focusing on her mother.

You left the room silently, carefully closing the door behind you. Now in the hallway you went about looking for the help, making your way down the long hallway.

You may have despised Stolas as a man, but you had to admit, his home was quiet amazing.

You eventually found a Butler, from whom you politely asked if he could have some tea sent to Stella's study.

With your task complete you started the arduous task of retracing your steps back to the study.

Making it back, you were surprised to find Stolas outside her door. Walking closer, the demonic Prince turned to you.

'What are you doing with my wife?' He demanded.

Stepping closer you stopped before bringing a finger to your chin 'what ever could you mean, your highness?' You asked smugly.

'I'm not an idiot, so don't act like I am one.' he said a scowl in his voice. 'I know your after my wife and don't even try to play innocent.'

He said it all with such dignity, such honour. It took everything you had not to laugh.

Clearing your throat you took another step closer to him.

'I didn't have to lift a finger, Stolas.' You told him, arrogance creeping into your voice.

'You had everything one could want. Power. Influence. A family.' You took a moment to shake your head. 'You had the most beautiful, most intelligent, most amazing woman in hell.' You gave a long dramatic sigh. 'And you gave it all up, For what? An Imp?'

Walking forward, you placed a hand on his shoulder. 'I don't have to Act like your an idiot Stolas, you've more then proven it. And now, You've given up your claim to your marraige.' Looking him dead in the eyes and told him, 'Its my turn now.'

Before Stolas could respond the tell-tale sound of silverware clinking of a cart being pushed, drew your attention to its source.

Taking a step back, you addressed the maid pushing the cart 'Thank you so much, if only all imps were so brisk' You told her politely, opening the door.

The Imp pushed the cart between the two of you, into the room. I smirked at the Prince, the Imp walked out of the room, right between us.

'Thank you very much', you told the Imp, giving her a bow. The Imp giggled, giving her own little curtsy before scampering off.

Hi! I have a question, if that's okay! I wanted to write a character who is a blind psychiatrist/therapist - some context, this will take place in the future, so he'll have a robot helper (also a cane, as many visually impared people often complain they don't see this rep). Do you think this would be "unrealistic"? Again, sorry if it's a weird question, maybe more suitable for a psychiastrist xD

Short answer: It is still possible to get a PhD in Psychology and become a psychologist/therapist, but it is not possible to become a psychiatrist which is a bit different. In my long answer, I discuss the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist and a possible solution.

So in ye olden times I was a psychology major. That’s the major I started community college with and it only took my second psychology class to realize it wasn’t the major for me and that I didn’t enjoy it. However, that second class happened to coincide with my recognition that I was losing my vision so I asked my professor the first week of class if it was possible for someone who was blind to become a psychologist.

He said “yes of course” and loaned me a psychology journal that had interviewed either 5 blind psychologists. And it is possible to make it through the years of college to get a PhD. (you know, in like ten years of university, three different degree levels, a specialized study and thesis, etc.)

Psychologists treat their patients with behavioral therapy programs based on research and talking with the patient to assess a problem and produce a solution the patient can use. But a lot of the work still falls on the patient to implement the plan into their daily life. Appointments with a psychologist are usually weekly and for an hour at a time. They have a smaller cliental following to psychiatrists (which I will get into next)

Psychiatry is different in that they focus on treatment through medication to solve problems with brain chemistry. For that reason, a medical degree is required to become a psychiatrist and to prescribe medication.

Is it possible to get a medical degree when you’re blind? I hate to say it, but I don’t think it’s possible. A lot of medical symptoms like rashes and bruising require sight to properly diagnose, plus looking at imaging scans of brains or bones or other organs to see the signs of a disease or injury. Just getting through medical school would be an ordeal fraught with unending discrimination from both professors and peers.

It could be argued that a robot helper could describe the visual symptoms, but then you run into the dilemma of “if robots can handle medical procedures, who needs humans to become doctors” followed by the dilemma of “if humans are needed to oversee robotic labor to make sure they don’t screw up, then the human overseeing them has to be able to see (insert ableism)”

So I would say becoming a psychologist who handles patient interviews and can have medical files read aloud via technology is within the realm of possibility. Hopefully this futuristic technology has become more accessible overall and there’s less discrimination against the blind in obtaining employment.

Psychologists usually collaborate with psychiatrists however, whether that is them working as partners in the same office, or referring their patients to the other’s care if they think the other doctor might better treat the patient.

So, possibly your character has a friendship with a psychiatrist and they work together, which could mean an interesting dynamic if that’s the route you wish to go for.

I wanted to suggest the counseling route or simply the psychologist route. Neither require medical school.OP, what draws you to this field? Do you want your character to conduct therapy? Where do you want them to work?

(2) What do you want them to do most? Research psychiatry, psychology, and counseling (LPC - Licensed Professor Counselor) and decide which one you like. I agree with Mimzy that psychiatry (which requires a medical degree) is probably out and your character would face A LOT of ableism. Psychology is possible. You can go many different routes career-wise. Clinical (therapy in various settings), Industrial-Organizational (researching and helping businesses and other organizations especially with boosting teams), school (not a school counselor and usually not a full-time position unlike a school counselor- the focus is on specialized cases such as a student with schizophrenia). 

(3) You can also go the research route. My instinct is research with or without a private practice, with some previous experience in various agencies such as with substance use or eating disorders (which are mostly group work and some individual sessions). Psychologists can administer tests + interpret them.

(4) (That is a psychologist’s main thing- in a private practice, they would be administering tests often).Counseling is focused on therapy and uses the wellness model rather than the medical one. Therapy in individual or group is the main thing. Out of all these professions, they do therapy/counseling the most. They also handle clients after they have received medication for whatever diagnosis they have (if they received or needed medications). 

(5) For example, they help with adjusting to school to school or work, regulating schedules or emotions, family adjustment, any other adjustments that person needs. They also help with more daily issues like adjustment disorders, chronic pain, dealing with grief or disease, sexuality or romantic concerns, adjusting to new disabilities, aging concerns, etc. They can diagnose (emphasizing counselor-client collaboration and the impact of a label on the client) and can conduct research. 

(6-7) I say this because psychologists often say they aren’t equipped to (I majored in psychology in undergrad, so I am very familiar with these things). The three major areas are School, Clinical, and Marraige & Family. The schooling is the same save for a few specialized classes and a different certification for a School Counselor. Counselors can work in schools as School Counselors, with couples and families, and clinical counselors can work in in-patient settings, with substance use or eating disorders or other agency settings, with children (play therapy), in private practice, in universities, etc. All of these professions require at least a Masters degree, years of residency/supervision, licensure exams, and continuing education to maintain it.

(8) With the robot assistant, and this type of work, confidentiality is going to come up. How do you protect client data? Is the robot encrypted and protected with a password? Does it only work inside her place of work?

PHEW alright. I’m exhausted but y’all know I’m long winded SO, my dears, introducing one of my most beloved characters Rosalie. She’s maybe not the easiest to get along with sometimes but she’s working on it. Here’s some facts!

Born Roselyn Lafayette. She was raised in the projects of Manhattan. Needless to say her family was not rich. Her mother worked 2, sometimes 3 jobs to support her family with unstable support from Roselyn’s father who was in and out of the kid(s) life. He lives permanently in Jamaica now, after being deported.

All that said, Rosalie had always been a daddy’s girl. Even if their relationship is strained now for the stress he put the family under. 

She and her mother butted heads often but without a doubt Rosalie’s mother is her best friend. Now that she’s made a name for herself, Rosalie brought her mother a house and makes sure she doesn’t have to work another day in her life.

In addition, giving back and serving your community is very important to Rosalie and she has money set aside every year to go towards a scholarship for girls in the projects to study dance. Girls just like her.

But you won’t hear about any of that. And I’m getting ahead of myself.

Rosalie was a good student and could have gone to school to study anything she wanted -- to get a respectable job, to go right into the work force. But her passion had always been dance. And her dedication to her craft, hard work, and tenacity got her a full ride to her alma mater in Chicago.

Because she has always been so... hyper focused on success and being the best and pushing herself to be better than she was the day before she rose to the top of her class and got noticed but didn’t make many friends. She was pretty lonely. Maybe she still is.

She was first introduced to Burlesque looking for a job (to support herself and send money home to her mother) and quickly fell in love with the rich scene Chicago touted. And that was history.

After she graduated she continued to work in Chicago, dancing under the alias of Rosalie Laforêt. It was there that she was scouted to move to Las Vegas, an opportunity she took immediately and ran with.

It didn’t take long for her to have her own show. And her career as a Vedette began before she hit 30.

She met her husband at one of her shows. She wasn’t used to men being consistent in her life, considering her parents’ relationship and maybe she was just starved for... attention that went deeper than what everyone saw on stage.

They were married quickly. And again she packed her bags, off to start again in Paris. 

Her husband was a french art critic & collector. And Rosalie was making good money. For the first time she experienced wealth. Which was fine. But inside their beautiful home things weren’t always as picturesque as one might thing.

Bottom line: Rosalie’s husband was a known alcoholic and drug addict to boot. But she loved him so she stayed. Regardless of the cheating. Regardless of the screaming. Who knows, maybe she’s so guarded now because of the shit that went down in her marraige but we don’t talk about that.

It was when her husband died of “mysterious circumstances” that her life in Paris began to totally fall apart. People knew her husband wasn’t... the best. People knew that she was younger than him. People knew that she was attractive. And all of those factors led to people narrowing their eyes.

They called her a gold-digger. Pointed their fingers in her direction. But Rosalie had never been overly emotional. From childhood she had to learn how to survive. Peoples’ problems with her were theirs. Not Rosalie’s. 

And to be honest, it did hurt. Because in reality, her husband smoke and drank and drugged himself to death and she was left to pick up his and her pieces while being blamed for breaking him in the first place.

LIKE BEYONCE’S “LOVE DROUGHT” GIVES ME MAJOR ROSALIE VIBES. So I shall quote from it: “I’ve always been committed, I’ve been focused. I’ve always paid attention, been devoted. Tell me what did I do wrong?”

ANYWAY. She had had enough with Paris. So she let things quiet down a bit. Took a break. Then let her agent convince her to try LA. It would be another new start. And Silver Lake was just out of the public eye enough, and just close enough to LA for work that she packed her bags. Again.

Please don’t waste her time. Rosalie is kind of that bitch. She doesn’t mean to be rude, or harsh, and if you don’t give her a reason not to she’ll be civil but she is kind of tired of people right now. People just... disappoint you. She’s never needed anyone but her mother before, she doesn’t need anyone now. 

Definitely drinks too much wine.

Has kind of become a little bit of a recluse, honestly. The only people she really talks to on a daily basis is her mother and her agent.

salaam sis, me again ! so i went into work today with the intention of going up to the guy and indirectly finding out if he was married, but didnt end up doing it as i arrived like 5 mins before i was supposed to leave for my rotation. i also didnt see him at all today, but then after maghrib, i was kind of upset about it and think i saw him as i came back but briefly. thing is he was in the other room and when i saw him i was so happy but his back was facing me and it was really busy so i found an excuse to be near him (luckily a colleague was there) and pretended that i left my sheets there. despite being near him and talking and looking around for my "lost sheets" he didnt turn around once. kind of wish he saw me but goshhhh he is so focused mashAllah lool. im trying to build up the courage for tomorrow but again, even thinking about it makes me so nervous. i was telling my work friend about it (she's not muslim so she's struggling to understand why i seem to like this guy so much after just a few encounters and one very simple exchange - esp. wrt marraige stuff - like she also has work crushes but theyre not serious even tho she's probably spoken to her ones much more than i have). If you're having a hard time speaking to him about the marriage matter, maybe it's better for you to wait for your mutual friend? I also feel that wait will be better for you so you can collect your thoughts and understand your feelings. Do you feel that way about yourself?

I apologize if I came out a bit harsh, I gave you advice as I would my own sister. I can understand having such strong feelings can cause us to do things we wouldn't normally do. We must remain cautious of our guidelines in sha Allah.

Summer 2017 Anime First Impressions

Well here we are again, four weeks into the season before I finally get around to catching up on the twenty shows I’m keeping track of. Not like anyone reads these anyway. Regarding this season, we can say one thing: at least it isn’t last season. Thus far there’s been nothing super stand out, with a lot of middle-of-the-road shows and a few ones slightly better. Much preferable to the shit show 16 weeks ago. As usual, here’s what I’m watching, with MAL links and original shows marked:

Tsurezure Children (MAL) Starting off, we have a webcomic turned serialized manga turned anime, and for good reason. Tsurezure is a 4-koma romcom focusing on way too many couples in bite-sized happy romance stories. Defined by reaction faces, exclamation points, and yet a surprising amount of exposition, it's a quirky comedy I glad I started reading. One of the main downsides of Tsurezure is that although it has overarching themes, minute-to-minute enjoyment is very much based on the current couple. Personally, I love the Class Prez/Deliquent, Chiaki/Kana, and anything with the Love Master. The problem, then, is that once you find the few you really like, it's kind of a shame you only get so much time with them. A simple art style that matches the manga belies an infectious humor that Toshiya has mastered. This is one short show I wish was longer. Watch this.

Aho Girl (MAL) Continuing the notable increase in half-length shows, we have this half-witted one. Aho Girl, lit. "Clueless Girl," follows Yoshiko, an idiot, and her friends(?), mostly childhood friend Akuru, trying to deal with her idiocy. A suitably odd OP, both in sound and visuals (or relative lack thereof), leads into Yoshiko's introduction through getting a 0 on all her tests. I guess that confirms the title, now doesn't it? Tsukkomis, wild attitude swings, and bananas are the name of this show's game. One thing I love right off the bat is just how blatantly annoyed Akuru gets with Yoshiko's antics. It's not hard to see the "he's supporting her because he does feel something," but that being shelved in favor of faces of disgust is just funny on a very essential level. This show knows exactly what it is, a dumb comedy about a girl being dumb. And yet it's dumb fun all the same.

Isekai Shoukudou (MAL) A somewhat restrained take on the well-worn isekai genre, Shoukudou involves Nekoya, a resataurant that serves fantasy creatures once each week, connecting to "the other world" through the restaurant's front door. Right off the bat, the upbeat OP is coupled with some fantastic visuals. I missed having a food porn show last season, but Shoukudou brings it back in force. Further, throughout each episode the background music keeps pace with events and is a very nice touch to the cool tones of this show. Indeed, this show absolutely exudes cool. The smooth tunes while the last few customers (albeit they being beastmen, wizards, and the like) finishing their orders, Aletta and the Master cleaning tables into the night, it's just so nice. Aletta is the new hire, a demon girl homeless in "the other world" who finds the door to Nekoya by happenstance and promptly gets a job and a new outlook on life. She's real cute. Shoukudou has plenty of the "customer narrates the intricacies of how good the food is" every time a new customer comes in, but it's great all the same. If this show is a slow introduction of new characters to Nekoya for the rest of the run time, I will be more than satisfied. AOTS contender right here. Satisfied with an isekai? What is this season coming to?

Koi to Uso (MAL) Marraige is arranged genetically for happiness at 16, and other love is forbidden. As if there was a premise that lent itself more to a high school romance-drama. I have to say, I am in absolute disbelief that Koi to Uso isn't penned/drawn by the same creator as Scum's Wish. The artstyle and really the whole tone, albeit Koi to Uso being a bit more restrained, I immediately thought it was the same author. Wild. Anyway, we're dropped into a modern Romeo and Juliet, Nejima and Takasaki confess, to each other, just as the government - the external circumstances - are pulling them apart. It's not a new path forward, but I think the latter half of the first episode conveyed the emotions pretty well. The beautiful artstyle helps, and with shaking hands, red cheeks, and streaming tears the ending scene got me into it, despite the expected outcome. ...Is what I was thinking as Nejima fucking fell on top of Ririna (his assigned wife) in the second episode. Why. Why do that? Why have that 6 seconds into the show? At least the girls are cute - Takasaki in a hoodie, shorts and thighhighs was just incredible, but Ririna with her curious eyes and attitude beyond her height, hoo boy - guess I'm rooting for the underdog now. Time to suffer. With Ririna's schemes, Koi to Uso is perfecting anxiety - having something so treasured so close, being trapped by things out of your control, being trapped by things inside yourself - so much anxiety. This show can't go anywhere except emotional turmoil, but if it's already getting emotional responses out of me, I'm going to stay interested. Especially after episode three's ending.

Netsuzou TRap (MAL) Yet another shorter-than-normal show, we have NTR. Yes, that NTR. The "fuck over the caring guy and get off on cheating behind his back" kind of NTR. Just now with lesbians. Even moreso, I dislike Hotaru's archetype so much it just makes me feel bad for Yuma. If you're into that, watch this. If you're not, don't. I don't know why I did. There are better fetishes.

Clione no Akari (MAL) The fourth and last of the short shows, Clione no Akari begins with Takashi and Kyoko trying to help Minori, who is getting bullied. Its muted art style matches this tired premise. I know it's only nine minutes, but the first episode still felt like it dragged on for some reason. Moreover, both Takashi and Kyoko reflect on their weakness and that they want to stand up to the class for Minori, but then in the second episode all of that possible growth just gets passed over. They call out to her after she almost gets splashed by a car, and then Takashi says "After that, Kyoko and I grew so focus on how we could solve Minori's current situation, it was as if it were happening to us." So after they complain about their weak personalities, instead of forcing them to change, they simply get a way to help Minori while not directly standing up to the class. It seems like if it affected them that much you'd see a bit more exposition rather than nothing to "And then, we became super close to her" over the span of fifteen minutes. It might seem like I'm asking for a lot from a 9-minute show, but that's exactly the point - if a show aims to be an engaging drama about making friends and standing up for one another, it needs to have more substance packed into its short timespan, and Clione no Akari does not.

Hajimete no Gal (MAL) And the award for "highest percentage of animation budget used exclusively for cameltoe" goes to... First, make sure you eschew the HorribleSubs release on this one, because the censoring is bad. Not Terra Formars bad, not Shinmai Maou no Testament bad, but it's not great. Now then, this is a very simple decision: you watch for the fanservice, or you don't watch at all. I'm serious when I say the animation goes to Yukana, and to a lesser extent the other girls, because the male characters (even the MC) and everything else looks downright bad. The fanservice, however, is pretty damn nice. Junichi's delusions lead into some steamy scenes that are top tier gyaru action. Other than that, the OP/ED are generic, the other girls are lackluster, and the "comedy" is unfunny. Just skip through the dialogue until you get Yukana being cute, and this'll be somewhat enjoyable.

Gamers! (MAL) A nothing main character spoken to by the cutest girl in school because she's interested in video games and especially his passion for them, despite never talking prior. Wew. Karen, said cutest girl, is attempting to bring back the school's gaming club, where real gamers play games with their gaming friends. These are serious gamers, so serious about their gaming that they forget everything else except the game, like the true gamers they are. Episode one has fantastic lines like "I've been looking for new members who are undeniably true gamers" and "Why did you guys become gamers?," like it's something you have to awaken to. And yet even in spite of this, the glorification of gaming is still going hand-in-hand with the conceptualization of "gamers" as outside normal people. Karen hasn't told anyone about her gaming passion even though she's so popular (and it's foreshadowed she'll lost her widespread respect), and Amano gets the description "Games are his friends." Every character is just entranced with Amano's gaming spirit that they can't help but want to game with him. And just like a good MC, Amano is humble and pessimistic about his own gaming passion, but stands up for the game club and the gamers that make it up. This show feels like an E3 PR rep's ideal anime. The game references themselves aren't half bad, but that's certainly not saving this waste of my time. Guess I'm just not a true gamer.

Made in Abyss (MAL) I was originally off-put by the character designs, but I am glad I finally decided to watch it. A city sits on a massive hole - The Abyss - full of ancient ruins - and our main characters are delvers into the giant void. Importantly, Made in Abyss lets us know right off the bat that it will not be all idyllic landscapes - a close call with a dangerous monster now foreshadows so much better than suddenly changing the show's tone halfway through. Background music and art style both benefit this show greatly - the music rising and falling with he action while the art easily conveys the current state of the landscape - overgrown yet hiding secrets. Riko is a energetic girl at an orphanage guild, known for swiping Relics she finds and generally causing trouble. In the tussle with the monster, she is saved by a robot boy, Reg and promptly takes him back to experiment. Just the first episode sets up tone, characters, and the mystery of the Abyss with precision. The choice of children as main characters is an interesting one, but I almost didn't think twice because the rest of the people in Made in Abyss didn't think anything of it, either. Starting with a premise that has such a clear objective, like the Abyss' bottom, also relatively anchors the show against wild plot swings, which gives me more confidence in the story going forward. All these things combined are making for quite an enjoyable experience, and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Ballroom e Youkoso (MAL) Tatara is our typical despondent teen protag, who through a chance encounter is roped into trying ballroom dancing, and in it sees an opportunity to find himself. I picked this up solely on its premise, because I've never seen an anime about ballroom dancing before. It just seems so far from the typical slate that it caught my eye. This show's unique animation style, credit to Production I.G., has its ups and downs. For the most part, the show looks clean, the lines look great, and the motion is good. On the other hand, the actual dance scenes seem to lose a bit, in favor of dramatic freeze frames or showing the top halves of people rather than their legs moving or other intricate motion. I'm certainly not going to yell at the animators, for a show in which Tatara is won over by simply watching a ballroom dancing DVD, to get the viewers interested the motion, the visceral movements of the dance need to be shown, and more often than not they aren't. Oh, and the necks. Why is everyone's neck so long? Apart from Tatara, behind Sengoku's bombast lies a calculated, seriously powerful personality that is the perfect motivator for Tatara. And I don't know about you guys, but Shizuku is cuter in her practice/casual clothes than in a ballroom dress. Just my taste. Anyway, alongside the stalls in animation, I can't honestly say I like Tatara's VA. To me it just gives off the trying-too-hard-to-be-a-teen vibe too much for me to not notice it every time he speaks. While still enjoyable, these two faults are noticeable the entire time you watch the show. However, if you are interested in the premise, and don't mind animation quirks, then by all means, Welcome to the Ballroom.

[ORIG] Princess Principal (MAL) Alt history, 20th century steampunk London, and spies but also superpowers and made-up minerals, this is Princess Principal. Smooth jazz while a loli-ninja wearing a mushroom hat cuts up 20th century cars? Sure, why not? Cavorite, the aforementioned made-up mineral, allows for temporary control of gravity, allowing the girls to make their first daring escape with a VIP. Also, the girls are spying between the Commonwealth, or the West, and the Empire, or the East. Also the Princess herself is a spy. It's certainly a lot to take in immediately, but this show seems to revel in the craziness - echoing the fast-paced, spontaneous action of the spies themselves. Our main girl Ange lies to get through life, and is soft spoken and terse. The others in her immediate crew range from the authoritative onee-san to the cheerful loli. I personally feel like they could have made a perfectly enjoyable spy thriller with just alternate history and no supernatural element Take Joker Game from a few seasons ago - that even went so far as to be historically accurate in its place names and such, and aside from some same-facing was a wonderfully engaging show. While I do feel the personalities more in these femme fatales, I just don't see the "thriller" part as holding up as much. It's really not bad - I just feel my main gripe here is the overpresence of themes that don't need to be there. Still worth a watch if you don't mind it.

Centaur no Nayami (MAL) Having watched both MonMusu and Demi-chan and consequently becoming an Expert™ on monster girl shows, Centaur no Nayami is most certainly more of the former. I'll say at the very least that guys in school also being monsters is a welcome change, rather than including a harem. Hime, the titular centaur, acts just like her name. Nozomi is our sharp-tongued, tomboyish tsundere, while Kyouko (my favorite) is a terse, blonde tsukkomi. We get a surprising amount of world-building right out of the gate - the world is as it is thanks to a different evolution path, and to avoid the discrimination of the past, "equality" is aggressively and strictly enforced. The seemingly dark background behind the otherwise peppy slice-of-life is definitely off-putting, and seems immediately at odds with the tone. If while walking around town the girls maybe glimpsed an abuse or something similar, the aggressive equality mantra might seem like an understandable government reaction. Seeing nothing of the sort while hearing Kyoko not want to ride Hime because that's discrimination and she might get sent to a "correction facility" is more than a bit unsettling. Production-wise, the show looks and sounds great. Quirky music for quirky circumstances, and the motion of all the characters' different bodies is conveyed convincingly. The A/B Parts splitting the episode is something I haven't seen in quite a while, but I think it lends itself well to the SoL part of the show. Overall, this is a surprisingly endearing slice of life with a higher-than-normal amount of kissing, and I just wish they'd lay off the dramatic background. Worth a watch if you're into monster girls or slice of life more generally.

[ORIG] Action Heroine Cheer Fruits (MAL) Last but not least, we have Action Heroine - Heroines (as in those live-acted hero shows) are now super-popular, and the show follows one town that is way behind the curve on popular heroines. Immediately, I like the art. It seems like not too much more than "generic anime-style," but Diomedia has a way of doing soft lines and expressive faces that just looks great. Now I don't pretend to like hero/heroine-type premises, but even I can see this show's got remarkable heart. Spurred by her sister wanting to see Kamidaio, the current most famous heroine, Mikan, an earnest, caring sister teams up with Akagi, an energetic Kamidaio-super fan to put on a small-scale show, and the rest is history. Their first performance is carried singlehandedly by the effort the two girls put into making Mikan's sister's dream come true. Action Heroine gives off the feel of an idol show (he says, having not seen LoveLive nor Idolm@ster), with a diverse cast of girls all trying to be the best for their fans. While I don't think this show is exactly going to enjoy LoveLive levels of success, as I've said - you can see the heart it has. Some individual moments were also very strange - like a flashback where one girl loses a tennis match because a bug flew in her face, and another girl talks to her imagined anthropomorphizations of model trains. If you're into the nostalgia of hero/heroine shows, this plays right into that. Otherwise, it's a show you can pretty easily avoid.

When she was five Mikasa loved to help with the gardening. She would use a small spade, or her fingers, digging into the loamy soil. The grass would tickle her bare feet, her knees, as she crouched over and gently placed the seeds her mom passed her into the holes she had so diligently made. A gentle swipe of her hand buried them - just like her mom had showed her. She dug deeper holes for the herbs they transplanted and she was allowed to place those too as long as she agreed to be very careful. She loved everything about it from the dirt under her nails to the soft sweet scent of growing things and the freshness to the air in the aftermath of rain. Her mom smiled at her as she danced around the backyard covered in dirt when they were finished.

“You’re going to make some boy very happy one day,” her mother said.

Mikasa’s face crumpled with disgust. Everyone knew boys had cooties after all.

When she was ten Mikasa loved to run. She would easily out-distance her friends, bare feet slapping on the sun-warmed concrete. With her hair flowing behind her and a smile in her eyes, she ran. She’d collapse into a chair in the kitchen at home panting from her exertions and her mom would bring her a glass of juice. Mikasa loved these quiet moments where she could just sit and listen to her mom talk. Usually they’d talk about the garden or school but sometimes her mom would talk about the boy she would marry one day and Mikasa would wrinkle her nose and roll her eyes and change the subject.

When she was fifteen Mikasa loved fighting. There was nothing that compared to the warm burn of muscle exhaustion. There was nothing better than the endorphin rush of besting a willing opponent. She trained her body at the gym the way she trained her mind at school and focused on turning herself into the best version of herself that she could be. Mikasa loved fighting but she hated confrontation so conversations with her mom had become difficult of late. Whenever possible she would remove herself from the situation, go to her room and listen to music for hours at a time as though the notes could tune out her mother’s insistence on what she considered an outdated tradition.

“Mikasa, I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about. Really! Your father and I had an arranged marraige and it worked for us. I’m telling you, this will be good for you!”

“He’s twice my age.”

“That’s only because you’re still young. I’m not asking you to marry him tomorrow.”

“Mom. He. Is. Thirty.”

“I know fifteen years seems like a long time when you’re young but trust me, when you’re twenty it won’t matter as much.”

“No! You don’t understand do you? I don’t want to marry some guy twice my age who I’ve never even met!”

“Mikasa,” her mother's voice was accompanied by a faint sigh, “You’re being unreasonable.”

“No you are!”

Mikasa was turning even as her mother gasped in indignation.

“Mikasa Ackerman! Don’t you take that tone with me! Look at me when I’m speaking to you!”

Mikasa ignored her mother’s raised voice and closed herself up in her room knowing she was in for it later but taking a small pride in her childish rebellion anyway.

When a knock came on her door a couple hours later it wasn’t her mom who came in after her grudging acquiescence but her dad. She planted her back a little more firmly against her headboard as she took in the tired lines on her father’s face.

“Mikasa, honey, you know your mother and I just want what’s best for you right?”

She let her eyes slide away from her father's and stared a hole into the wall just past his shoulder.

His sigh was nearly inaudible as he pulled out her desk chair and sank heavily into it, “Sorry, I didn’t come here to give you a lecture.”

“Yes you did,” she said, her eyes snapping back to her father full of reproach.

Her father smiled faintly, “Okay, yes, I did.”

Mikasa huffed and looked away again.

“The issue here is less your disagreement about our plans for your future and more about how disrespectful you were with your mom. You can’t treat her that way.”

“But you guys can treat me whatever way you want?”

“That’s not what I said but to a certain degree, yes. We’re the parents and you’re the child Mikasa. You might not always like it but that’s just how things work.”

“I don’t care what you say I’m not marrying some old dude.”

Her father chuckled, “Okay. I’ll drop it for now. Please think about it though. It would make your mother and me very happy.”

Mikasa kept staring at the wall long after her father had left, gently closing the door behind him.

When she was twenty Mikasa finally gave in to her mother’s badgering.

“Fine. I’ll meet him. But don’t expect me to like it.”

“Oh, Mikasa, you have no idea how happy this makes me. You’re making the right decision, truly.”

Mikasa stared impassively at her mother. She didn’t want this but if it would appease her mom she could at least meet the guy and reject him to his face. It wasn’t like she even had time for a relationship, let alone a marriage. She had school and work and training. Somehow she managed to fit time with her friends and family in the cracks. Sleep was the only other thing she made time for and she wasn’t about to give up any of those things for some guy in his thirties that her parents wanted her to marry.

She told her mother so and felt a faint hint of remorse as her mother's face fell slightly.

“Mikasa,” she hesitated, looking down and tucking her hair behind her ear, before continuing, “Mikasa you do know that we won’t insist on you marrying him if you don’t like him right? You do have a say in the matter. You’re not a child anymore so I trust you to make the right decisions.”

“Mom.”

“No, don’t interrupt, I’m not finished.”

Mikasa pressed her lips together at her mom’s sharp tone but let her continue.

“We won’t insist if you don’t like him but I want you to give it a fair chance. I know that you aren’t fond of the idea of arranged marriages but you do know that they can be every bit as successful as the marriages you’re more used to. You can’t know that it won’t work unless you at least put some effort in. I’m not asking you to fall in love but I’m asking that you at least consider the possibility that this could be a good thing for you. Despite what you might think of us your father and I just want you to be happy,” her mom took a deep breath and shot her a tremulous smile, “Okay?”

Mikasa took a steadying breath of her own before meeting her mother’s eyes, “Yeah. Okay.”
