The Difference Between Hybrid-Electric vs. Battery-Electric Aircraft
The future of aviation is looking brighter than ever as new technologies emerge to make the industry greener and more efficient. Battery-electric and hybrid electric air travel is paving the way for a new era of advanced air mobility, creating exciting new ways to move passengers, cargo and more.
There are two different technologies innovators continue to explore as the aviation industry moves to achieve its decarbonization goals. These include battery-electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems. While they both work to make aircraft more environmentally friendly, how do they differ?
Battery-Electric Aircraft
Battery-electric aircraft could be the future of short-range travel. These aircraft do not use conventional jet fuel or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Instead, they run entirely on batteries to produce zero emissions.
Typically, all-electric aircraft have a far shorter range than their hybrid or fuel-powered alternatives. But that doesn't mean they don't present many exciting use cases. Experts see battery-electric aircraft as a viable option for short hops. For example, it can be a great solution for air taxis moving people within city centers. Alternatively, it presents a compelling use case for commercial delivery, emergency services and more.
Hybrid Electric Air Travel
While all-electric aircraft presents many unique opportunities for short-range travel, hybrid-electric aircraft opens up more possibilities for cleaner air travel. This technology still uses batteries for more efficient operations. But, aircraft has the added benefit of fuel-powered combustion.
Hybrid-electric aircraft is a more flexible alternative to all-electric aircraft. They can handle short-range travel using nothing but battery power. But when long-range travel is necessary, the propulsion system will automatically move to fuel energy sources. As a result, hybrid-electric designs can handle long-range regional trips, moving through existing air corridors or creating new ones for more efficient travel.
Hybrid technology is also changing current airplanes. Many heavy hitters in the aviation industry are exploring hybridization to improve efficiency for commercial air flights. The hybrid-electric systems can handle tasks like taxiing, pushback and wheel operations. Once the aircraft hits cruising altitude, other power sources can recharge the batteries, enabling them to assist during landing.

Vertibirds. 🚁⚙️🗡️🪽
So every wastelander and his dog know that the fallout 4 vertibirds crash more than settlements need help. But why is that? Here's my 2 caps on the matter. (Or: Bethesda doesn't understand aviation very well I think)
( So uh this is way longer than I expected, I was possessed🚁☢️:] )
TLDR: Horrific conditions for aviation, the difficulties of wasteland heavy maintenance, inexperienced pilots AND mechanics, and the WORST damn instrument layout I’ve ever seen
The Vertibird is designed as a fictional tilt rotor VTOL/STOL(Vertical/Short Take Off and Landing) aircraft which makes a ton of sense in the wasteland where suitable runways are rarer than hens teeth. One of Bethesda's primary visual design influences for the vertibird I suspect is the bell boeing v-22 Osprey.
This funky creature \/
Tumblr media
This photo is from the Wikipedia page >Here< [ID: a photo of a v22 osprey aircraft in flight as seen from below and to the right, the aircraft is a medium tilt rotor aircraft with very large propellers, the aircraft is current in vertical take off or landing with the engines pointed straight up. The landing gear is extended, the aircraft is painted in air-force grey with the faint decal “marines” and the American army star on horizontal stripes and the squadron and registration barley visible on the empennage. The cargo and forward doors are open and a soldier is hanging out the front. End ID]
Now the Osprey has a bit of a reputation among people I’ve met who’ve flown in them, I've personally been told things like "if it's not leaking hydraulic fluid, that means you're out of fluid" and "its terrifying to fly in".
Tumblr media
My screenshot. [ID: A screenshot of a fallout 4 vertibird, seen from front left in flight over bushland. the Player is manning the minigun and Paladin Danse is a Passenger. End ID]
Looking at the Vertibirds themselves we can make a few assumptions here.
The shape of the cowling and the noise they make indicates that the engines are some form of turboprop engine, likely requiring liquid fuel akin to Avtur(Aviation turbine fuel). Confirmed by the Instruments visible in the cockpit.
The most weight efficient way to move big parts is hydraulics so, they likely have complex hydraulic systems for wing positioning / AOA(Angle Of Attack) / engine angle. Likely also for landing gear since they have retractable gear in fallout 4.
That the BoS has modified them from the original design at least partially, allowing attachment to the Prydwen, likely other modifications too.
I strongly suspect that they have an APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) in the aft fuselage / empennage somewhere, since they have a massive air intake scoop on the top fuselage, they can self start their primary engines which either requires a ridiculous amount of electricity / amps or a source of bleed air. Bleed air is the most likely candidate for self start and is reasonably common on real turbine aircraft, APUs also allows for ground power without having primary engines running. Also confirmed by the instruments in the cockpit.
All of these points are well and good and common in aviation, even modifications (ie. STOL kits, survey aircraft, agricultural mods, skiis, ect). But modern aviation has some advantages that the BoS doesn't have: access to new off the shelf parts, proper verified documentation, proper test processes & facilities, and experienced personnel.
Don't get me wrong, I think Proctor Ingram is awesome, very knowledgeable and practically a miracle worker (especially with that one terminal entry about an engine failure field recovery she pulls off!!), but one chief engineer cannot maintain an entire fleet AND the Prydwen, she comments on how things are breaking often on the ship that she is very busy! Training of new engineers takes *years* to even get to basic level! Ingram can’t train anyone she is too busy keeping everyone in the air 24/7! So who is training all of these scribes? There must be a huge amount of time teaching and supervising even simple tasks! Even at their best the BoS wouldn’t be able to hope to be near the prewar standards of training! Even Ingram or other senior scribes would not be thaaaaat experienced, 10 years is not a long time to completely learn a new aircraft and implement systems & processes of maintenance. The point here is that there are inexperienced scribes maintaining these aircraft.
WOLRDS BEST CHEIF ENGINEER ❤️ \/
Tumblr media
My Screenshot. [ID: A screenshot of proctor Ingram from fallout 4, she is standing in the Liberty prime control area. She is smiling. She is wearing her usual modified power armour frame. Preston is visible in the background with a clipboard and pen, he is wearing woody’s outfit from toy story. End ID]
Heavy maintenance in the wasteland, especially in an active combat zone would be an absolute nightmare, are the poor scribes doing overhauls on the flight deck?? Not really possible, so the BoS must have a ground facility at the airport somewhere. Also side note where is the rest of Boston airport? There is more to an airport than a terminal and 1 runway, where are all the hangars?? Likely underwater but still, no ruins??
Back to maintenance, aircraft need a huge amount of care, way way way more than cars do. light civilian aircraft IRL need a full inspection every 100 hours of flight time, which adds up incredibly quickly! For example if you have a one hour commute twice a day that’s MR(Maintenance Release) hours reached in 50 days! You legally cannot fly out of hours. And a service for small aircraft takes about 3 personnel / 2 days and that’s without any major repairs or ADs (Airworthiness Directives) to address! $$$$! Aircraft operating in adverse conditions also need additional maintenance, and coastal areas like Boston, are considered adverse conditions since the salt air corrodes aluminum and steel like nothing else! Corrosion untreated will damage your aircraft and if left too long can destroy the structural integrity of aluminum parts. The spars of aircraft are aluminum often!
Tumblr media
My photo. [ID: The inside of a Cessna 172 wing trailing edge is shown looking inboard at the aft root rib, which is primer green, it is backlit by torchlight, the fuselage and a orange scat hose are visible behind it, it has 3 irregular shaped holes in it, 2 are by design but the third medium sized hole in the center of the image is eaten away by corrosion. End ID]
Vertibirds, between being shot at constantly and having a complex deign with a lot of precision moving parts will need a lot of repairs; moving parts means lots of upkeep, grease and inspections! The BoS by 2287 must have some sort of manufacturing back in capital, they cannot still be using old parts from the enclave after 10 years of maintenance, that’s a lot of grease, paint and hydraulic fluid!!!
The BoS must also have a refinery of some kind because Avtur is a refined fuel with some important additives like biocide. Manufacture and storage of fuel is very important since fuel contamination will bring down an aircraft! (and has multiple times IRL! :[ ). Water, microbes, and algae are real dangers to engines, with free water being the most common. Poorly sealed tanks or improper fuel storage combined with a incomplete or missed pre-flight inspection can lead to fuel starvation, since water is heavier than fuel and tank outlets are at the bottom of the tank. If you loose an engine on a twin, may God help you.
Tumblr media
This image is from Concordia Bioscience >Here< [ID: A photo of a sample of pale yellow Jet fuel in a clear container, the sample is contaminated with water and microbes and has separated into layers with water at the bottom, then microorganisms, and then Fuel at the top, the image is labeled as such. End ID]
Getting to the most likely crash reasons now (finally), In my opinion that is inexperienced pilots and; a horrific instrument layout.
While there must be some lancers in the BoS that have been flying for the whole 10 years that they’ve had Vertibirds, I think that is likely the exception not the rule, even if they crashed a fraction of the time that do in game that’s still A LOT of downed aircraft!
Experience is only gained in practice, and unfortunately for the BoS they are (self-declared) at war so resources are thin and safe zones are thinner. I suspect that there are a lot of very inexperienced pilots without the time for the experienced pilots to really teach.
Linking to my final point, experience on an airframe itself is also important, you want to be familiar with your aircraft, even among a group of the same model aircraft they will each have quirks, like slightly different instrument layouts, slightly different handling/feel i.e. "this one flies heavier / slower" (at least that's my experience with smaller civilian aircraft) I imagine that the apocalypse did nothing for improving manufacturing tolerances!
FINAL AND MOST DAMNING POINT:
Experience can only help lancers so much when veritibirds have such a strange instrument panel layout:
Tumblr media
My screenshot. [ID: a screenshot of a instrument panel from a Fallout 4 vertibird. it is slanted on a approximately 30 degree angle. End ID]
A bit weird looking yeah? For reference Pilot is left seat and copilot is always right seat, this applies globally even in right hand drive countries.
lets take a closer look:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Screenshots. [IDs: Three screenshots of the same Instrument panel as above, but zoomed in using a sniper rifle scope to get a better look. The first screen shot is the pilots side, the second the center, and the third the copilots side. End ID]
All righty! So reading from top to bottom, then left to right we have:
On the pilots side: A Rotor%RPM gauge, a VOR(Very high frequency Omni-directional Range) indicator, a DG(Directional Gyro), a HSI(Horizontal Situation Indicator), and then a huge AI(Attitude Indicator),
In the center section we have: presumably light clusters (likely master warnings & cautions, gear indicators, and other status lights), a second VOR gauge, likely magnetic compass as they are usually top centre (though I can’t see it being at all accurate with all of the steel around!), the engine instruments cluster, and the APU status / control panel at the bottom. unsure of what the 3 clusters of horizontal buttons are suppose to be other than input of some kind?
In the Engine cluster: Torque%, XMSN(transmission) oil temp / pressure dual gauge, a gas producer % RPM gauge with small integrated single percent dial (like having a seconds dial on your watch for accuracy) meaning the engines have free turbines (compressor not attached to the power turbine), a dual load / fuel psi gauge, a dual engine oil pressure and temperature gauge, fuel quantity in pounds, a turbine output temperature gauge (the hottest part of your engine), and a clock.
On the copilots side: a second Rotor%RPM dual gauge, a third VOR indicator, Airspeed in Knots and MPH, a RMI(Radio Magnetic Indicator) which uses VOR and ADF(Automatic Direction Finder) on compass, a second DG, a second HSI, and a teeny tiny altimeter right in the outboard corner.
the 4 instruments on the lower copilots panel are completely unlabeled
some things of note that are from game limitations:
most of the engine instruments don't have needles at all
the DGs and the RMI use the same background asset, resulting in the DG wrongly having 'VOR' and 'ASI' on its face, DGs are self contained air driven instruments that work on gyroscopic precession, not any outside data input.
all of the instruments with a compass face all say north despite this vertibird not quite facing north.
the AI is showing wings level despite this vertibird being crashed and on a ~30 degree angle
there are not engine controls at all not even flat assets, only flight controls.
There are a lot of instruments here and most of them are reasonably OK read individually, BUT there at least 1 key instrument missing and the layout outs emphasis on completely the wrong things:
WHERE IS THE VERTICAL SPEED INDICATOR(VSI)????? That's a pretty important gauge in a VERTICAL take off / landing aircraft!!!!!!!!!! It's one of the basic six pack!!! how was it omitted??? Speaking of the six pack why is there only one ASI and Altimeter?? and why are they tiny and ON THE COPILOTS SIDE ONLY???? the altimeter is LITERALLY the furthest instrument from the pilot in a vertibird, it should be right in front of the pilot!!! the easy to miss altimeter would make IFR(Instrument Flight Rules) flying incredibly dangerous! Also why are there four VOR based navigational instruments? VOR IS GROUND BASED NAVIGATION!!! unless the BoS has rebooted the multiple ground beacons for them to navigate from that's THREE dead instruments taking up space on the panel! the RMI is slightly more useful as ADF can tune to commercial radio frequencies, though these would need to be strong!
These poor inexperienced lancers are having to look all over the whole unnecessarily crowded cockpit for basic information that should be right in front of them, causing reaction delays and possible confusion. That delay could be the difference between whether or not they are flying home today.
-> Bethesda doesn't understand what half the instruments do and while they did a good job with most of the assets, in their quest to make it retro-future / visibly different from actual aircraft, they have completely destroyed any use of logic in the layout.

Everything had been too much, being back in top gun, the mission, the squad..Him. It was all too much for you to handle, your emotions completely shot and haywire after Rooster and Mav had both went off radar in the mission, Jake had flown off of the carrier like a bat out of hell, barely waiting for the end of the runway strip before he was in the air, you in the backseat with your eyes on the radar, trying not to think of the worst as you flew through the air in an attempt to save your captain and the man you had been longing for for the entire time you'd known him.
"What do you have, Honey?" You hear Jake's voice over your comm system in your helmet as your radar starts going off. You glance up briefly from your weapons system screen, looking directly at the back of his head as he kept the plane steady. You and Jake typically flew your own planes, but you two also worked better as a team than anyone on the squad ever did, it made sense that Cyclone sent you both out together.
"Tally two, right side twenty five miles." You answer, watching the blips on your radar screen as Jake turns the jet into the right position. "Looks like a close fight up there." You ready your systems, hoping that you reach them in time.
"It's going to be tight Honey, you ready?" No, you want to say, you were never ready for your job, but you knew that Mav and Rooster were relying on you to survive. You feel the plane flip hard as Jake maneuvers the two of you into an optimal position, coming up below the two dogfighting jets. It wasn't much of a dog fight from what you could see though.
You could feel the sweat pooling on your brow, threatening to pour into your eyes if your insulated helmet didn't dry it up, you close your eyes for a moment, trying to calm your nerves, your stomach rolling as you come closer and closer to your target.
"Ready Hangman." You say, your eyes locked on your screen. You felt Jake pull up hard, pulling the nose of the plane completely vertical, right under your target. You system locks in immediately, the tone going through your comms. "I've got lock! Fire! Fire!" You wait with bated breath, your body relaxing immediately upon the aircraft taking a detrimental hit and immediately dropping from the air. "Target down!"
"Atta girl, Honey." Jake says almost condescendingly, your roll your eyes at him but can help the smile on your lips, knowing that he meant it genuinely. Jake evens out the plane, and you keep an eye on your radar for bogeys, you could never be too sure if the fight was really done until you'd landed back on the carrier. "Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, this your savior speaking. Please fasten your seatbelts and return your tray tables to their locked and upright positions and prepare for landing." You roll your eyes at the pilot, as he comes up besides Maverick and Rooster, you could practically taste the gloat in his voice.
"Looking good, Hangman." Rooster says, a hint of relief in his voice. You see Mav make a hand signal at him and nod his head, you do the same as they notice you in the backseat.
"I am good Rooster, i'm real good." He says before taking off back towards the carrier, the two of you feeling more relieved than you could have thought necessary. "I can feel the anger radiating off of you, Honey. Why do you hide your feelings for him so much?" Jake had you cornered and you couldn't help but wonder if it was on purpose..You and Jake went pretty far back, as did him and Rooster and Natasha, and it seemed like everyone knew your feelings for Rooster except for the man himself. You thought they had gone though, you hadn't seen him in well over three years and you thought that you had moved on from him, it had never gone anywhere anyway, you following behind him like a lost puppy and jumping at any opportunity to be alone with him had obviously been returned with nothing but friendly gestures.
"He doesn't like me like that, we've been over this a thousand times before Jake." You mutter, a sigh leaving your body. The feelings for him had all come rushing back the moment he stepped into the Hard Deck almost a month ago, rushing back into you like a crushing weight on your shoulders that you didn't particularly think you wanted anymore. "Telling him wouldn't get me anything besides embarrassment."
Jake purses his lips, he thought Rooster was annoying sure, but he was fond of you and he hated seeing you like this. He too had thought it had finally passed, had found himself wandering why Rooster never returned the feelings that you so obviously possessed for him, hell they all had wandered, until that first night back at the Hard Deck when he noticed the way Rooster looked at you as soon as he noticed you, faltering in his tracks and his face flushing red as he tried to look anywhere but at you.
Hangman couldn't let you two just keep suffering in silence like this, and as he touched down for landing on the aircraft carrier, he made up his mind: He was going to be your wingman.
He's kind enough to help you down from your seat, giving you a friendly hug of relief that both of your feet were back on the somewhat solid ground. Jake was a cocky man, but even he knew the risk he ran every time he buckled into is seat and it was always a relief to make it back to base. He could tell you were rigid, your eyes locked on the horizon towards the other plane that was coming in hot.
You both watched the ground crew break out the landing net, the old plane having lost its landing gear in its scuffle to even get off the ground in the first place. It does its job, stopping the old thing in the middle of the landing deck, the sound of metal scraping on the deck making the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Everything is still for a moment before all hell breaks loose, someone climbs up the wing of the aircraft and helps pull the cockpit open, Mav and Rooster are trying to loosen their harnesses, both of them looking more than relieved to be on solid ground again, even if that solid ground was floating in the middle of the goddamn ocean. You were happy to see them back, but pissed that it had to come down to you saving them in the nick of time, pissed that Bradley had been a complete fucking dumbass and purposely crashed his plane to save their Captain, even if he was his pseudo-father.
You weren't sure what came over you, but before you could stop yourself you were rushing over to them both, your eyes locked on the tall, thick man with the fucking mustache, blood on his face from what looked like a few cuts. You pushed through the deck crew and the dagger members that hadn't made the cut for the mission, all of them crowding the two pilots as they hopped down from their stolen plane. You get to him just as he touches the ground, your hand flying out without even thinking. You don't even flinch as your palm connects with his cheek, smearing some of the blood.
"What the fuck, Honey?!" He yells after a moment of shock, looking down at your with only a shimmer of anger. You looked up at him, eyes wide and watery, your nose flaring in anger and your fists clenched down by your side, your helmet hanging off of your flight suit.
"That's for being a fucking dumbass, Bradley!" You yell, not even bothering to acknowledge your captain as you turn on your heel, pushing through the crowd of people, wanting to be below deck as quick as possible. You brush past Hangman on your way, holding your hand up and shaking your head when he opens his mouth to ask you whats wrong, you didn't want to talk. You hated these feelings inside of you, hated that they would never be reciprocated, hated yourself for still feeling the same way about the man who had never once shown you the same bit of feelings.
Jake watched after you, lips pursed before looking towards Rooster once you had disappeared from sight. Rooster was staring after the spot you had just disappeared into, slowly fighting through the crowd of people surrounding him and Mav, as if trying to follow you. He sighs, thinking that you two were the most clueless sons of bitches he'd ever laid eyes on.
"You're a dumbass, Bradshaw." Hangman says after shaking his hand once he gets close enough. Rooster gives him an incredulous look, bewildered.
"That seems to be the general consensus today.." He says, his mustache twitching as he purses his lips. "What's up with Honey? She fucking smacked me..I dont understand..." Jake can see it in his eyes then, the confusion, the wonder..the hurt, the longing..
"How long?" He sighs, hands on his hips. He realized he was going to have to push both of you together if the two of you had any hope of getting together on your own at all.
"i..what?" He asks, playing stupid, not wanting to really open up to the man he hardly had a good relationship with. Hangman gives him a look though, and he sighs in defeat. "Since we all went through TOP GUN together.."
You avoided Rooster at all costs while you were on the carrier, eating at different chow times than him, or just not even eating at all and when you weren't manning your station you were locked in your quarters. You weren't sure what to say, or even what to do after smacking him across the face like that, you certainly weren't going to apologize. He had been a dumbass, you felt that your actions were quite justified in that instance.
Jake had made a habit of keeping you company over the next couple of days as the carrier made its way back to miramar, probing for answers around your thing for Bradley; "why did you hit him like that?" and "why him?" or several questions in the nature of "it's because he's so goddamn tall, isn't it?" If it weren't for the fact that you actually liked Hangman as a friend, you would have told him to screw off by punching him in the dick.
By the time you made it back to base, you couldn't decide if you were more relieved to be back on solid ground or to go your own separate way from the squad. Either way, you were just relieved, glad that the whole thing as done and over with so that you could take your leave and go home..not that you really had a home away from base. You had been stationed here for most of your career, if not at the naval base up the coast that you also split your time between. Home for you was a small apartment outside of fightertown, and the only thing waiting for you was a bottle of tequila and your dog. The thought sounded relaxing.
You made your quickly down the walk of the carrier, your navy duffel bag strung across your shoulders as you dug for your car keys. You had left your little sports car on base like most other crew on deployment, you were hoping that it wouldn't be as hot as a boiling pot of water in there, not particularly in the mood to feel like an undercooked lobster.
You weren't as quick as you thought though, because just as your boots hit the much loved pavement, a voice rung out. "Honey, honey wait!" You turn your gaze over your shoulder just as Natasha's hand latches onto your elbow. You give your friend a soft smile. "Where are you off to in such a hurry?" She asks jokingly, chuckling as she readjusts the bag on her shoulder. She glanced back to catch the subtle nod that Hangman gave her, following you towards the car lot.
"What's up, Phoenix?" You ask, pulling her against you. She had been one of your best friends for as long as you had been a pilot, one of the few female pilots you could stand to be around most of the time. "Want to ride home with me?"
Phoenix smirks, gripping your arm tighter. "Only if you get ready with me to celebrate at the Hard Deck tonight." She looks at you expectantly, hoping she wouldn't have to beg you to come. She and Jake had been working too hard on this for you and Rooster to not show up tonight, it pained her to get along with the shit head but it would be oh so worth it to see the two of you finally get together tonight, even if they had to trap the two of you in Penny's office together. She could see the reluctance on your face. "Honey, come on, one night and then you can go back to your quiet life of watching action movies with your dog...please..?"
You sigh, there was nothing more that you hated after a deployment like that than being around a crowd of raucous drunk idiots, but, you just couldn't say no when your friend looked at you like that. "Okay, okay, come on.." It's not like you weren't getting drunk tonight either way, might as well do it with your friends.
The drive to your apartment wasn't too bad, Nat plugging into the aux as soon as you guys left the security gate of the base, you wasting no time in stepping on the gas as you both screamed along to the playlist she had started blasting. You could feel the stress of your feelings and the mission washing off of your shoulders already and for the moment you were reveling in it.
While you and Nat were having a damn good time getting ready for the evening, already fashionably late before you even realized it was time to get going, Jake was with Rooster at the Hard Deck, both men having gone home and changed into plain clothes. The setting sun was casting a nice glow through the bar, Penny already busy behind the counter as she kept up with the growing crowd of Aviators and civilians streaming in through the door.
Rooster and Hangman were having a somewhat friendly game of pool, Mav watching on in vague disinterest as the pair bickered back and forth about who was winning. Rooster was in fact not winning, his mind too focused on you, wondering why you had smacked him like you had and then just completely disappeared, he wondered if you were actually avoiding him like Jake had told him. He had just missed a shot on one of the corner pockets and was straightening up with a dismayed grunt, raising his beer bottle to his lips as he glances around the room, his entire brain short circuiting as they land on you and Natasha, walking hand and hand towards the pool table.
You were a walking goddess in that moment, a beautiful smile lighting up your face as you toss your head back, laughing at something she had said to you as you guys neared the group. Rooster's eyes roamed downwards as you started walking up the two stairs of the part of the bar that held the pool table, blood rushing straight to his cock as he lingered on your long, tan legs. You had legs for days and whatever the fuck shorts you were wearing left little to the imagination, squeezing your ass so tight he thought it might burst the seams as you bent over the pool table, his pool stick in your hand as you shot him what he would label a flirty look over your shoulder.
'When the fuck did she take my stick?' He questions himself, his eyes trained completely on your ass as he takes a long swig of his beer, hoping to god that he didn't get whiplash from the complete 180 your attitude towards him clearly had done.
"Perv." Natasha says, sliding up next to him, her hand in the pocket of her jeans. "I'm kidding," She chuckles, looking up at him. "She really does have a fantastic ass."
Rooster chokes on his beer and a hand claps him on the back from behind, the smell of Bob's cologne fills his nose. "Need some water.." He grunts out, making his way to the bar. He doesn't notice Nat and Jake high fiving each other or that you're pouting after him, your eyes trained on the back of his Hawaiian shirt as he walked away.
You sighed, handing the pool stick to Coyote's waiting hands before going and making your rounds with the squad, mingling with a few friends you had made around base. You had a conversation in passing with Rooster about drinks and the goddamn suffocating california heat.
The night wore on, and as the bar was starting to empty out you found yourself in the corner near the piano, where Rooster was just getting ready to play when he overheard your conversation with Maverick.
"...i'm thinking about requesting a transfer, maybe up north in Washington? What do you think?" Your voice is quiet, and for a second he's not even sure if he heard you right but he notices Mav's hesitation and knows that he heard right. He doesn't hear the rest of what's said as he plays a few keys, getting ready to start his ode to his father, only to stop abruptly when you breeze by him, your perfume filling his nostrils. You're headed towards the door, and he knows that he can't let you leave without saying something to you, the chances that you'd even listen were non existent but he would absolutely kick himself to death if he didn't at least try.
"Rooster, where you going?!" Fanboy calls, on his way to the piano to join in the usual sing along until Rooster barrels past him like a bat out of hell, his eyes locked firmly on your retreating form. Rooster only waves him off, running to catch up with you as you move your way onto the back patio.
You breathe in the fresh air as you walk to the ledge, the sound of waves crashing against the sandy beach reaching your ears, bringing a peace over you almost immediately. You would miss it here, you knew that much, but it was time for you to go, time for you to move on..you would miss your friends, and hell even your apartment, but you couldn't stay here anymore, not when you were clinging on to a stupid fantasy.
"Honey?" His voice rouses you from your thoughts and you turn your head, your eyes finding him in the dim glow of the string lights that Penny had strung about the outside deck. He's standing a few feet behind you, his open Hawaiian shirt billowing in the slight breeze, his tan skin prominent under the white of his undershirt. He always looked so relaxed, you envied that.
"Hey, Rooster.." You say, voice soft as you give him an easy smile. You lean against the railing, focus on him. You open your mouth once, the words stopping in your throat before you try again. "Um..I wanted to apologize for the other day..i.. shouldn't have..done that.."
Rooster chuckles, the corners of his mouth turning upwards in a smile that would haunt you for weeks to come. "I deserved it.." He says, stepping a little closer to you. "You weren't wrong, I was a dumbass.." You purse your lips, trying desperately not to breathe in his scent as he gets closer again, trying not to let your eyes linger too long on how tightly his jeans held him in certain places as you looked him over, the sight of it making you bite your lip as you tried to suppress the thoughts flooding your brain. "So uh..i heard you tell Mav that you wanted to request a transfer..why?"
You're a little taken aback at his question, the why sounded a little too accusatory for your liking. You take a moment before you answer, turning back around to look out at the water, not wanting to look him in the eye as you answered. You felt so stupid that he was the reason, because you were tired of pining after him, of feeling like an idiot for doing it in the first place when there was so clearly nothing between you guys other than friendship from the very beginning of things.
God, why did you let me waste so much fucking time on him? You ask yourself, trying to find the words to say without actually saying the real reason.
"There's nothing here for me, Roo.." You say, your voice so soft he barely heard it over the bareling waves crashing onto the coast. He steps even closer, damn near pressed against your back at this point. You can feel him, his body heat, his smell enveloping you in a way that felt almost sinful. You wanted to cry. You wanted him to tell you not to go, because you wouldn't, if he did. You would stay, and continue to suffer if it meant that you got to still be near him. "My family doesnt talk to me, Nat and Jake are gone more than me, so it's always lonely..there's no one here..no reason for me not to transfer.."
"I'm here." He wasn't thinking, the words spilling from his mouth before you had even finished your sentence. You spin around, eyebrows furrowed, your face flushing as you realizes how close he is to you. "Stay, Honey, please.." He whispers, bringing his large hand up to cup your face gently. You lean into it, wondering what kind of dream world you were in as you meet his eyes.
"Bradley," You sigh, closing your eyes, shaking your head as if shaking yourself out of it.
"I can't let you leave, not yet.." He says, making up his mind. It was now or never, and if he blew it, then at least he wouldn't have to live with the embarrassment of seeing you every day if you did transfer. "Maybe I'm too late and you don't feel the same way that i do, but i can't just let you go, not without saying it.." You don't even let him finish the thought, wrapping your arms around his neck and pulling him down to your level, pressing your lips against his. He hadn't been expecting it and makes a noise of shock in the back of his throat, closing his eyes as he uses the hand on your face to pull you closer against his hard body, tilting your head back as he parts your lips with his tongue, dominating the kiss as he towers over you.
Everything about the way that Bradley kisses you in that moment feels so sinful, so delightfully sensual with the way his mustache prickles against your skin, the possessiveness in the way he holds your head, it all goes straight to your pussy, your already built up sexual tension overflowing. You were certain that you would let him fuck you right then and there on the back deck of the bar, all of your guys' friends and a couple of superiors watching and everything without a care in the world.
He pulls away with a look like that makes you think it was painful, and you whine at the loss of him, already needy for him after one kiss. "My place, or yours?" He asks, and you grin feeling as if he'd read your mind.
"Yours, doofus." You giggle, happily running after him as he grabs your hand, not needing anymore encouragement from you to get going. He leads you through the bar, not even stopping to say goodbye to your friends as you grab your things, tossing Nat your car keys so she can crash at yours.
Her and Jake cheer as you guys hurriedly make your way out of the Hard Deck, and you can't help but wonder if this had something to do with the two of them. You shake your head, getting rid of the thought as Rooster lifts you up into the passenger seat of his Bronco.
The drive to his house is barely ten minutes, but it feels like hours with the teasing glances and touches, his large hand on your thigh the entire time, inching closer and closer to the apex between your legs, you wondered if you would even make it back to his as you buck your hips up subtly into his hand, trying to ignore the groan he makes as his fingers brush over your clothed pussy, pressing down through the denim of your shorts as if to tease you. You whimper, looking over at him with big doe eyes. "It's not nice to tease, Roo.." You pout, and if it weren't for the fact that he was already slowing down to turn into the driveway of the small house you would have unbuckled and climbed into his lap, ready to ride him as he drove. You'd been waiting for this moment for so long it seems that you didn't care how you achieved it.
"Poor Honey, can't take a little touching?" He asks condescendingly, yanking you over into his lap as soon as your seatbelt is off after he's shut off the car. He grips your ass in his hands, squeezing as he presses you down against his stiff cock, you can feel just how big it is through his jeans and you moan at the thought if it absolutely ruining you. "That fucking needy already?"
You nod your head, eyes closed as he grunts. "Please Roo..take me inside.." You whimper, already reduced to begging for this man. He grins, eyes glinting mischievously.
"I was going to take you right here, Honey," He says, pressing you down onto his cock once more as if to emphasize his words before his door opens. You squeal and wrap your arms around his shoulders as he hops out of the car without warning, your legs going around his waist as he supports you with such ease you couldn't help but to be turned on even more. "But i don't think my neighbors can handle watching me fuck you in my car."
You press your lips to his as he carries you to his front door, your hands in his hair as he presses you against it, hand searching for the knob. It opens and you fall through with ease, Rooster pressing you against the wall next to it as he closes the door, his lips going to your jaw and down your neck, mustache scratching you in the most delicious way in its wake. You groan as he hits that certain spot on your neck, barely registering his large hands pushing your shirt upwards and over your head, his lips leaving your neck to instantly attach to the skin of your breasts that your bra left exposed.
He sucks a hickey onto each of them, his fingers pulling the garment down to let your tits bounce out and he can't help but to groan at the sight. You were perfect, he thought, so perfect that he wandered why the hell you were even doing this with him. He doesn't dwell on it for much longer though, moving you off of the wall and walking you backwards towards the living room, your hands pushing his hawaiian shirt off of his shoulders, it slumps to the ground. His undershirt is next as he falls backwards onto the couch.
"I want these off." He grunts, hands tugging at the waist band of your shorts. You nod aggressively, standing up for just a second to unzip them, letting them fall from your hips. Rooster sits up with a groan, drinking in the sight of your lacey green thong, he can see the dark patch of your pussy, your arousal leaking through the miniscule fabric. "As much as i love these, they need to fucking go.." He says, yanking them down your legs. He wants nothing more than to throw your legs over his shoulders and eat you to oblivion, but he knows that there will be time for that later, right now? You're both too needy to even think about foreplay. He lifts his hips up, shoving his jeans and boxer briefs down to his ankle, kicking them off before sitting back, motioning for you to come closer. "I wanna see you ride me, honey girl.."
His voice sends waves of pleasure straight through you, your hairs standing up as a shiver runs down your spine. You eye his glorious cock, hard and thick, long too from the looks of it and wonder what you did to deserve being so spoiled by this.
He doesn't have to tell you twice though, without a second thought you straddle his lap, his legs spread beneath you as he holds his cock up, sliding it along your pussy once, twice, teasingly listening to your whimper before he lets you sink down onto it.
He expects you to take your time with it, like most other girls have, and is shocked when you sink down onto it completely. He throws his head back at the feeling of you taking him completely, a deep moan leaving his mouth. "Fuck, honey.." He grunts as you start to move your hips, the feel of him so intense that you feel like he's everywhere in you.
You whine and whimper, hands on his chest for support as you take your time with him, wanting to savor the moment for as long as possible. His hands find their way back to your ass, squeezing it and smacking it as you start bouncing slowly on him, your dripping pussy making a squelching sound everytime you move your hips upwards, as if your soaking cunt is trying suck him right back in. "So fucking perfect, honey, so fucking good, jesus christ.." Rooster says, babbling away as you fuck yourself on him. After a couple more minuets of letting you be in control, he takes over, hands gripping your hips as he sets a new pace, pistoning his hips upwards into you at a pace you weren't sure was even possible until now.
His cock hits every single spot in you as he goes, his hands pressing you down farther onto him as they grip your hips so tightly you just know there will be a bruise later. Your hands on his chest are the only thing keeping you stable, your vision going blurry at the pleasure radiating through you as he fucks you like no one ever had before. "Oh my god, roo...mmm oh my god.." You whimper out, he grunts and doubles up in his speed, listening to practically wail as he keeps going.
His brows furrow as he focuses, his gaze on your pussy as he watches his cock disappear in and out of it. "So fucking perfect honey girl, like this pussy was fucking made for me baby..holy fuck.." He grunts, your nails dig into his chest and he can't help but groan loudly as he feels your pussy clench tightly around him, your voice so high pitched it sounds like screaming at this point as you're nearly about to cum. "Thats it baby, i know i know, i can feel it..cum all over me pretty girl, all over my dick baby come on.." His words wash over you, your body shaking as your orgasm rips through you harder than you'd ever felt before. "Good fucking girl..holy shit..baby.." He grunts, trying to hold his orgasm in. "wanna cum inside baby, wanna fill you so full...can i do that honey?" You nod meekly, barely understanding his words in your orgasmic bliss. You nearly come again a few seconds later when you feel his hot come shoot into, you can feel how thick it is and can't help but groan at it, your head falling onto his chest.
Rooster keeps his hands on your hips, your body still shaking as you both come down. His head leans against yours, both of you breathing uneven as you try to gather your wits. "Roo?" You ask, voice soft.
He hums, holding you against him. He definitely wasn't finish with you yet but he knew that you probably needed to rest your body for a minuet. "I got you, my sweet, sweet honey girl.." He coos, kissing your forehead as he slowly stands, his cock still hard inside of you. "We're not done yet baby..not yet.."

We have now entered the Research and Development exhibit, which is where the museum's experimental aircraft that never quite took off (😉) live.  Personally, I think this is one of the coolest parts of the museum because it really showcases all of the strange and wacky things that have been tried over the years to push the limits of what can be done with flight.
This is a Ryan X-13 Vertijet. As per the museum website, "The X-13 was built to prove the concept that a jet could take off vertically, transition to horizontal flight, and return to vertical flight for landing." While the craft was successful, the project was shut down due to limited operational potential and a lack of funding.
Underneath the cut is a picture of the placard in front of the Vertijet at the museum, which includes a diagram illustrating take off.

STOVL Fighters Collection DOWNLOAD
At the end of 1950s, the engineers had just an idea of delivering the aircraft even without a runway. Then in the beginning of 1960s, some tests conducted to test the capability of STOVL (Short Take-Off Vertical Landing) or in other word, a possibility of vertical movement of the fixed-wing aircraft, began with the "Flying bunk" in1959. Then the Hawker Siddeley Limited in Britain proposed a concept named "P1127 Kestrel" as a prototype of the VTOL fighter. Then this concept acepted and in 1969, the production of Harrier GR1 had begun. This aircraft was intended to be in use for Royal Air Force, but the Royal Navy also got their own version of FRS1 years later. These Harriers sought it's first battle experience in Falklands War in 1982 when these Harriers brought down some of the Argentine's air capability without any losses. The last of the Harrier production was in GR9 variant which subsequently substituted by the latest F-35B by the Royal Air Force.
McDonnell-Douglas AV-8B Harrier II
The USMC was also seeking the aircraft that suits for the amphibious mission. After the success of the Harrier FRS1 and GR3 variants in the Falklands War, in 1985 the USMC proposed an inquiry to acquire some of these aircrafts, with also stated that these aircrafts should be manufactured in the United States. Then BAe Industries licensed the Harrier to the McDonnell-Douglas company . Also this aircraft met the service within the Royal Spanish Navy in 1987. Several missions has been done by AV-8Bs including Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Libyan Crisis.
Lockheed Martin F-35B
The STOVL variant of F-35 Thunderbolt which it's STOVL technology derived from Yak-141 VTOL system, which sold to the Lockheed Martin in 1992, which emphasizes the vector exhaust and a fan in the middle of the aircraft. Also the most wanted aircraft in action of this century. The F-35B is the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the aircraft. Similar in size to the A variant, the B sacrifices about a third of the A variant's fuel volume to accommodate the SDLF. This variant is limited to 7 g. Unlike other variants, the F-35B has no landing hook. The "STOVL/HOOK" control instead engages conversion between normal and vertical flight. The F-35B is capable of Mach 1.6 (1,976 km/h) and can perform vertical and/or short take-off and landing (V/STOL)

The P3 Aircraft: A Game-Changer in Maritime Security Operations
The P3 Aircraft: A Game-Changer in Maritime Security Operations
Airports, security queues, and jet engines may be changing. Passenger-to-Port (P2P) or Point-to-Point (P3) aircraft will revolutionize air travel. Without significant airport infrastructure, these unique designs can take off and land vertically (VTOL). Imagine taking a P3 aircraft from a landing pad near your home or workplace and visiting your destination in minutes, skipping airports. P3 aircraft could transform aviation by improving accessibility, travel times, and sustainability. Safety, range, and infrastructure issues remain.
Tumblr media
P3 -Air-Craft
What is a P3 Aircraft?
Unlike traditional aeroplanes that rely on a network of airports for take-off and landing, P3 aircraft offer a more direct approach. These innovative designs aim for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities, allowing them to operate from rooftops, helipads, or even designated urban areas. This eliminates the need for lengthy taxiing and eliminates dependence on extensive airport infrastructure.
Advantages of P3 Aircraft
P3 aircraft hold immense potential to reshape the future of aviation by offering several key advantages:
Increased Accessibility: P3 aircraft can take off and land from almost anywhere with a designated landing zone, significantly improving accessibility to remote or underserved regions. This can be a game-changer for connecting islands, mountainous areas, or locations with limited airport infrastructure.
Reduced Travel Time: Bypassing congested airports translates to faster travel times. Imagine hopping on a P3 aircraft from your local rooftop and reaching your destination within minutes, avoiding the hassle of airport security and long commutes.
Decreased Noise Pollution: Many P3 concepts utilize electric or hybrid propulsion systems, leading to quieter operations than traditional aeroplanes. This is a significant benefit for urban environments where noise pollution is a considerable concern.
Environmental Friendliness: Electric or hybrid P3 designs decrease emissions, resulting in a more environmentally friendly aviation sector. Sustainable transportation options are becoming more popular, and this fits right in with that trend.
Traffic Decongestion: By providing an alternative mode of transport within cities, P3 aircraft can alleviate traffic congestion on roads, especially for short-distance travel.

WEEK 25 OF BANGING POTS AND PANS
Been thinking about game mechanics. Specifically, tools, you know, for the player.
I'm not sure how many of these will make it through the cutting room, but these are what I have in mind for the game:
Spaceglider
You have a spaceglider that allows you to fly and travel between places. It's a glider, so oxygen is not included, but thankfully there's some oxygen in the nebulae.
The spaceglider has some limitations...
It's prone to breaking. Unlike Outer Wilds and Subnautica, you can't repair it on the spot. However, unlike Subnautica, you're given one immediately every time you start, and it's also possible to find other space/aircraft lying around.
It's shiny and loud. For planets with predatory wildlife, you want to avoid attracting their attention when landing
Glowsticks
You have a flashlight with your suit, but glowsticks are a thing too. Useful situations:
Tossing this works for some predators
Allows you to explore dark caves even when electricity (i.e. your flashlight) doesn't work
Jetpack
Jetpacks allow you to go up vertically; however, they tend to overheat. The jetpack can be taken off and thrown too.
Implications:
Allows for moving up (though it's limited)
Emits light
Overheating hurts you
Throwing it at hot objects causes it to explode
Throwing it while overheating causes it to explode
Grapple Hook
Launches a grappling hook. This in conjunction with the jetpack gives you the most verticality in terms of movement.
Implications:
Has a collider. Can be used to block or catch things
Is thin enough that it can survive the white hole, allowing you to double the length of your grapple
Camera/Translator
Used to take pictures. Objects that are obviously important can be used to start conversations with characters in the game. One of the goals is to take pictures of Beforei text, which adds to the translation bank. The camera also acts as a translator. Using the bank of Beforei, it can recommend translations.
Implications: idk
Signalscope
Used to find signals. Certain objects emit signals, including other Bells (live or dead), most Beforei artifacts (e.g. white hole machines).
This is probably the only tool I'm stealing from Outer Wilds wholesale, because I can't think of any modifications. Even for the jetpack, I was able to make it so it overheats.

Blue Team Beach House: Overview
So you're a supersoldier in the UNSC and you're being ordered to take mandatory R&R and for the first time in his life, your squad leader doesn't finagle some way to avoid this. But you're sick of being shipped off to places that aren't built for you (because there was that one time you broke a whole couch) but the UNSC hasn't gone out of its way to make a vacation resort for Spartans (because when do they ever go on vacation, right? Ha.) And you're sitting on a lifetime of hazard pay, more money than you know what to do with, but hey...actually, this time you do know what to do with it. You're gonna build a house on the prettiest white sand beach in the galaxy, specifically for you and your Spartan siblings because if the brass is forcing you to take some shore leave, then goddamn it, you're gonna take that literally.
Tumblr media
Welcome to the (actual, official) series of Blue Team Beach House posts. If you made it through that whole opening paragraph and still don't know what I'm talking about: I want Blue Team to fucking relax, so I imagined a (beautiful, unrealistic) timeline in which they'd be able to custom-build a vacation home to use when they need a break (and to eventually retire to? Like I said, unrealistic).
Tumblr media
The idea is that they'd do their best to tailor it to their own preferences and truly make a place designed by and for Spartans. And then I started thinking about this so hard I had to build the dang thing in Sims. So that's what this is. It's me showing off pics of a fun beach house build and bullshitting about why the architecture and design are (mostly) Spartan-Approved(tm) based on what we know about them from Halo canon. And if you're wondering, yeah, I do things like this for fun more frequently than you'd think.
CONSIDERATION 1: LOCATION
Tumblr media
Spartans are always thinking strategy. They can't turn it off. So naturally, if they were making a place where they'd be relaxing - somewhere they'd have their guard down - they'd want it to be naturally, geographically safeguarded, in case there were an attack (hey, you never know). What's better than a narrow strip of land from the front and a reef in the back to discourage access from the water? They wanted to have an anti-aircraft missile system on the roof, but their design team said no. They settled for solar panels instead. (Note that the roof edging the third floor is also made of solar paneling. We know green energy is standard in the 26th century.)
Tumblr media
CONSIDERATION 2: FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE AND EFFICIENT USE OF SPACE

They might have the funds to make this a reality, but that doesn't mean they're going to build superfluous balconies when they can just use the roofs of the floors below for deck space. It keeps things compact without being cramped.
Also, see those pretty wood slat facade pieces on the corners of the first and second floor? Not only are they a nice design touch, but they're also makeshift ladders. Need to get to the roof very quickly from the outside? Climb the fucking walls. Let's be honest, they'd do this for fun.
CONSIDERATION 3: OUTDOOR SOCIAL AREAS
Tumblr media
It's canon that John is a little claustrophobic. Yeah, he can fight it off, but he doesn't like spaces that are too small for him. I'd venture a guess that this is common for most Spartans, just by virtue of them being nearly seven feet tall. That said, given the options, I think they'd much rather be outside than inside, even if that inside was built to their standards of comfort. What's better than a nice big porch to hang out on and enjoy the gorgeous tropical weather?
Glass railings keep their view open and unobstructed - great for defense (again, you never know). The furniture is sturdy, either sculpted metal or durable wood (with the exception of some pieces that don't have to support a Spartan's-worth of weight). These themes will show up in other areas of the house, too.
Oh, and the vertical wall planter in the corner? Strawberries. What's better than a self-sustaining food source to cut down on trips into the city for groceries? This is only the tip of the iceberg on edible plants, by the way. Just wait.
Tumblr media
Things stay well-lit at night, because even though they can see near-perfectly in the dark, it's easier to relax when you know what you're looking at. And while those palm trees are nice landscaping, they're also great for climbing (and coconuts).

A U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress bomber has been spotted sporting an amazing retro color scheme recently. The BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fellow) was photographed taking off from Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, home of the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, by our friend Rob Stephens at Redhome Aviation, on Sept. 30, 2024.

We reached out to Rob who provided us a lot of additional details about this cool paint job.
“Somewhere around the middle of September 2023, B-52H 61-0028 arrived at Tinker AFB after a training sortie,” he told us in an email. “I don’t have the full details and the damage appears far below what would necessitate an Accident Investigation Board, but I understand the flaps were over sped sometime before the landing at Tinker. Scuffs and dents are visible on the side of the aircraft, as if the flaps made physical contact with the fuselage. Crews from Barksdale were dispatched to Tinker to inspect the aircraft and prepare her for the flight home”.
On Sept. 22, 2023 the B-52 was flown back to Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, “with her flaps-up, making quite the stunning departure”, says Stephens.

“One of the greatest things about living where I do is being able to photograph the fantastic work of the 565th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron as the B-52s go through programmed depot maintenance. While a rare occurrence, there are times where the aircraft will fly “naked” without paint between completion of PDM (Programmed Depot Maintenance) and their appointment for paint.”
PDM is a very complex process that each B-52 undergo every four years, made of heavy checks, during which the aircraft is almost completely disassembled and each part is inspected and all defects are fixed before they are rebuilt and sent back to their home stations as they were (almost) brand new. Even the paint is stripped off the entire airframe so that technicians can analyze every part of the aircraft and make repairs where needed.
B-52H 61-0028 “Wolfpack” flew on Aug. 26, 2024 mostly without paint and an orange rudder, that showed she was headed towards a special paint job.

“The final paint scheme on 61-0028 is a heritage back to the early days of the [NASA] B-52 testing campaigns, such as NB-52A 52-0003, which carried the North American X-15 in 1959. This paint is similar to the famous NB-52B 52-0008, but more closely resembles 52-0003. Her forward fuselage, wings near the wingtips, engine nacelles, and vertical stabilizer are painted in dayglo orange, contrasting the typical dark gray paint of the Stratofortress. Her “OT” and “49 TES” tail markings, black arrow point on the tail, and “U.S. Air Force” on the fuselage will be applied while she is at Barksdale AFB, LA.”

The NB-52s
In mid-1957, NASA decided to switch the launch aircraft (or “mothership”) for the X-15 hypersonic research project from the B-36 Peacemaker to the B-52 Stratofortress. The B-36 was nearing the end of its service life, and it was anticipated that maintaining a single B-36 after its retirement would be difficult due to the lack of spare parts. As the X-15 program moved forward, the NB-52A and NB-52B Stratofortresses were selected to serve as the launch platforms, with the NB-52B 52-0008 continuing in this role until its final mission in November 2004, while the NB-52A 52-0003 was retired earlier in 1969.

The NB-52B essentially functioned as a flying launch pad, operating at altitudes of nine miles to provide the necessary propellants, gases, and electrical power to the rocket planes it carried. To enable this, the aircraft’s right wing was reinforced and fitted with a pylon capable of supporting payloads exceeding 50,000 pounds—about a fifth of the aircraft’s own weight. This capacity made the Stratofortress an invaluable tool for numerous aeronautical research projects, including those that eventually influenced the Space Shuttle program.
The re-engineered NB-52B helped prove the viability of the Space Shuttle’s steep gliding landings by launching several wingless lifting bodies, which demonstrated the feasibility of such an approach. Additionally, the NB-52B played a critical role in testing parachutes that recovered the Space Shuttle’s solid rocket boosters and the drag chute used during Shuttle landings. Despite the aircraft’s age and rising maintenance costs, it continued to be used for various advanced research programs, including launching remotely piloted vehicles, drones, and experimental payloads in the 1970s and 1980s.
Beyond its role in launching aircraft, the NB-52B also contributed to research on wake turbulence, served as a gunnery target, and tested pollution-reducing fuel additives, once flying as a ten-engine jet with additional engines mounted beneath the bomb bay. Notably, during the X-38 program, it deployed the largest parafoil in history, which had a surface area larger than a Boeing 747’s wing.

A NASA Lockheed TF-104G Starfighter (serial N824NA) flies chase on the NASA Boeing NB-52B sporting a silver paint scheme during a DAST ARW-1 captive flight on 14 September 1979. The TF-104G was produced for Germany with the USAF s/n 63-3065, Luftwaffe serials 27+37. It was transferred to NASA in 1975 as N824NA. After retirement it went to the California Polytechnic Institute and is today on display at the Estrella Warbirds Museum, Paso Robles, California (USA). The Boeing RB-52B-10-BO Stratofortress (USAF s/n 52-0008) was converted to the NB-52B and retired on 17 December 2004. since then it is on permanent display at the west gate of Edwards Air Force Base, California. (NASA photo by Bob Rhine)
The NB-52B’s final mission was in 2004 when it launched the X-43A, which achieved Mach 9.6 with the world’s most powerful air-breathing engine. After decades of service and a vital contribution to aviation and space research, the aircraft was officially retired on December 17, 2004, at a ceremony at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center.
At the time of its retirement, “Balls 8” (from its NASA tail number, 52-008, where the leading zeroes and the final digit are commonly referred to as “Balls” in military slang) was the oldest B-52 still in active service and the only one not of the H model. It also had the fewest total flight hours of any operational B-52.
The aircraft is now on permanent public display near the north gate of Edwards Air Force Base in California.
The Oklahoma City ALC
As mentioned earlier, Rob Stephens lives near Tinker AFB, allowing him to photograph the aircraft undergoing PDM at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex. The Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex is a key unit within the Air Force Materiel Command and the largest single-site employer in Oklahoma, with over 9,000 military and civilian personnel delivering combat power for the nation. This massive complex is responsible for programmed depot maintenance and modifications on aircraft like the KC-46, KC-135, B-1B, B-52, E-3, and Navy E-6. It also handles maintenance, repair, and overhaul of engines including the F100, F101, F108, F110, F117, F118, F119, F135, and TF33, supporting not only the Air Force but also the Navy, Marine Corps, and foreign military sales. In addition to its maintenance and repair work, the complex develops and sustains mission-critical software for the Air Force and other customers, and it provides worldwide aircraft battle damage repair for multiple weapon systems.
The complex is comprised of four groups working together to provide top-tier maintenance and support. The 76th Aircraft Maintenance Group specializes in depot maintenance for B-1, B-52, KC-135, E-3, E-6, and special mission fleets, offering full overhaul services, FAA-certified repairs, modifications, and flight testing. The 76th Commodities Maintenance Group manages depot-level maintenance of aircraft and engine parts for a wide range of systems, including the A-10, B-1, B-52, C-17, F-15, F-16, and more, and serves as the Air Force Technology Repair Center for air and fuel accessories. The 76th Maintenance Support Group ensures the continuous operation of one of the Department of Defense’s largest industrial complexes, maintaining facilities, tools, and equipment needed for the depot’s mission. Lastly, the 76th Propulsion Maintenance Group is the leading DoD engine repair and overhaul center, responsible for maintaining engines used in bombers, tankers, fighters, and special mission aircraft.
Originally redesignated as the 76th Maintenance Wing in 2005, the organization was inactivated in 2012 when the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center was restructured as the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex. The complex now operates under the Air Force Sustainment Center at Tinker AFB, one of three key sustainment centers in the Air Force.
