This was all new to Selina, the last thing she ever expected was to become a bride to Count Dracula himself, but here she was, she knew that one of the brides, Marishka, had been killed by a stranger of the village she had lived in her whole life, even if it had been her home, she hadn't been that close with the villagers in all honesty, and she didn't even know who her parents were, so there was really nothing to stay for so had taken Dracula up on his offer to become his new bride after the death of Marishka, she landed outside Dracula's castle, she had to admit it was an impressive castle, this was going to be her home, naturally her wings disappeared and her light blue dress became visible again, how would Verona and Aleera treat her? Would they welcome her? She pushed those thoughts away when she heard Dracula land somewhere behind her.

Ericka Pregnancy Dump Part 2!
1. Cute/funny idea I recently came up with of sleepy pregnant Ericka trying to get some work done (I'm sure both in WIR-Verse and in her regular one, she'd try to keep working as long as she can. Even if she gets taken off in-game duties. She's very much the cheerful enthusiastic passionate about her job workaholic like Joy is. And we all know about Joy's Stonetide faceplant.) Mavis of course is helpful, having been there once in a way. And Van Helsing...well, let's just say it's a little bit of payback for the times Ericka's been annoyed by his tendency to take impromptu naps. Not the best idea to be making those jokes next to the daughter of his former rival who's the one of the 3 who's actually BEEN there, but still. He would. XD
2/3. XD I drew Hungry pregnant Ericka. Along with a fun bit of fluff that spun out of it. Yes, I broke my craving rule but him calming her down/distracting her with a kiss is adorable. And it does have the spirit of the idea anyway.
4. Was in the mood for some new mom Ericka stuff. (Again, it's regular Ericka to make it workable for both universes.) When I drew the first one with Drac, I kinda figured Ericka would be wiped out from the end of a twin pregnancy and either birth or a c-cection. So she waited a bit to hold the twins so she could rest up. Thinking about that and the irony of Ericka worrying about being cold since she was raised by her strict, by-the-book Great-Grandfather with how I think she'd actually be (I do love Mama Ericka, whether it's with Mavis or the twins.), It inspired this.
Don't worry, she'll get to the "Look at these! I made these!" Showing the twins off to everybody point eventually. But everyone else had a chance while she was wiped, she wants her moment to bond and she's not letting go of her baby bats that easily.
5. Wanted to draw Ericka curled up asleep in the cape. Ended up being pregnant Ericka. Bonus sleepy Transylvanian and Ericka hugging her bump as she sleeps!
(And she was worried she might be a harsh cold mom, having beem raised by a strict, not-too-affectionate guardian herself.)
6. This one came to me while I was working on a previous idea. I liked the idea of Drac, despite actually being the one killable by sunlight, shielding/sheltering Ericka under his cape. Even better with her being pregnant since pregnancy DOES make your skin more sensitive AND can cause you to overheat since you feel warmer anyway with all the extra bloodflow. Hense this wholesome moment. (This may possibly be in Game Central Station. I've played with the idea that, like Bot Fighter, HT's time zones are flipped since most of the game happens at night.
Bonus:
" Nice hat...Isn't that your monster festival hat?"
"**blushing, looking away** Y-yez. I know it lookz zilly on me, but it'z ztill the mozt protective thing I have. Vell, I mean, bezidez the babushkaz, and-"
"Hmm, well you're hot to me, handsome vamp. **chuckle** ...Seriously, though. I like it. Sure, it's no ax. But...You look charming in ANYTHING."
7. This started out as a gag where Frank (being something of the calmer laid-back one of the group normally and almost the 2nd in command of the pack before Ericka came along. Especially in the first one. He's also kinda Ericka's "big brother" figure I think.) was trying to keep the guys from crowding Ericka trying to touch her bump and ended up being just general "family with a new/expectant mom" chaos of everybody around Ericka and her kind of giggling to herself about being surrounded by all this. I kinda like that, it shows how far my girl has come. Going from being largely on her own, doing for others more than herself, and actually at one point ignored or intimidated when she was upset to being fussed over and surrounded by family. It's sweet.
8. Drew this one a while back based on some fat Serleena screenshots XD (Since Ericka's pregnant with Twins and MIB 2 is also a Columbia Pictures film, I think the comparison is...kinda funny. Plus Ericka WOULD joke about eating people to those who point out how big she's gotten.)
9. I had to do the packs' reaction to finding out about Ericka having twins some point. while all of them ribbing him would be funny, I ended up going a little more with personality: Frank being the happy supportive guy, Murray's the excited one, Wayne's the experienced one trying to offer help, and of course Griffin is the smart-alec jokester. Drac's reaction to this is...well, what you'd expect. XD
Kinda fun to include Wayne in this considering he didn't really get a chance to react to Drac's crush on Ericka with the others (Aside from his comment in the Novelization which it's a shame it didn't happen in the film XD)
10. And the first drawing of the new year: Wanted to draw Dracula with his newborn twin babies. Ended up adding bonus post-labor Ericka. (Been whembling about if she actually does labor or a C-section.)

Favorite movie werewolfs and favorite movie vamps?
In terms of design, my favourite werewolves on film are probably the Van Helsing ones (though their teeth are kinda goofy), but I also like the Lycans from the Underworld franchise. (The werewolves & werebears in Skyrim are neat too; extremely boopable snoots as well...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Favourite movie vampires are actually difficult for me. I really enjoy the campy-gothic nature of the Underworld vampires though. I also enjoyed the sadly-shortlived series 'Moonlight', and Buffy-verse vampires are usually fun. I'm struggling to think of others I really liked though (the Cruise/Pitt Interview with a Vampire ones are ok, I guess). I've only really enjoyed the first one, but the super schlocky 1991 film 'Subspecies' has a fun take on them (though it was difficult to enjoy the vampires because I was too busy falling in love with the female (human) lead...).
I feel like we've been cheated over and over when it comes to 'proper' werewolves and vampires in film and tv (and by 'we', I mean 'monsterfuckers', obviously). The wolfman form that Dracula takes in the 1992 film Dracula is a peak monsterfucker moment though. I mean...

What’s the best thing about the canon you are writing?
{ meme } | accepting
[[ Wellll, I tend to be a touch canon-divergent around here, but I use the canon of Van Helsing as more of a compass and ruler for where I go with Dracula. I also use other sources of canon: the book, other Dracula films, etc. I am not strict with how I write and use canon, because if I keep to just the film there is very little, to begin with.
Anyway, the best part of the canon I am writing is that I can see how Vlad develops and how he remains as he is with his interactions and relationships with others. Certainly, he has his canon relationships, but most he has dealings with to some degree, are from other fandoms/are oc's. I love it because it is a challenge for me to write a canon character and see how he works with (or against most of the time lol) others and their world beyond his own, while he must keep to his character and nature. Also, I love writing Dracula in my book-only verse that I hardly ever get a chance to use, which is one of my two canon verses (the other being during the events of VH). Stoker's Dracula is quite different from Sommers' (and the plethora of Uni.versal Films' Draculas) in many ways, but they do share many similarities. ]]

Max Mayfield and Tory Nichols in a horror film, what would be the plot/monster and would they survive?
this is it. this is the tumblr ask. the ask i've been waiting for my whole life. my time to shine, here we go!
filming begins under the cut:
tried and true creature feature, this is a werewolf movie. let's go with a werewolf between the van helsing (2004) and trick r treat (2007) variety. the beast once transformed is fucking huge, clearly both lupine and human, head almost entirely wolf, body primarily bipedal in shape, but robust, sinew shredding claws and big ass bone tearing teeth. also tails!! bc tails are cute!!! powers include monstrous strength, accelerated speed, healing factor. weaknesses silver and decapitation.
okay, so van helsing (2004) werewolves are mindless rage monsters and trick r treat (2007) werewolves are cognizant. for our max & tory creature feature, they're gonna of the in between variety. i chose a werewolf movie for these two specifically bc they both have their anger problems and the werewolf has long been a symbol of anger unleashed in the horror genre, even tho common gray wolves are just like. i mean, yk, animals, they hunt and howl and pee on trees and most of the time would rather avoid humans. but obvi horror genre werewolves are not common gray wolves, they need to be scary, and like, the remnants of traditional folklore influenced by rabies and discourse in the middle ages...wait, where was i going with this? anger, yes, max and tory both have anger problems and i think this works for what i'm gonna do with this theoretical movie.
who's the werewolf in town? terry fucking silver. bc terry is evil and dramatic and also, i think it's rly funny for a werewolf to have silver as a surname. he's fully cognizant in his transformation and he's purposefully biting kids and teenagers bc he wants more talented karate students. and like. yk, with the enhanced strength, speed, and regenerative recovery of lycanthropy, well. there u have it, more talented karate students.
do max and tory know each other, if so, how? okay, so in this 'verse tory is a lil older than max. that reflects their canon ages, i think. let's say max is 13 and tory is 16. billy has tory in some of his classes and he more or less makes a deal to spilt his allowance with her if she'll babysit max bc he's tired of neil riding his ass to babysit max. tory needs money so she's like, 'sure, why not.' max finds it rly stupid that she's 13 and neil thinks she needs a fucking babysitter but as far as babysitters go, tory is fun. she likes to show max what she's learning in cobra kai and they spar together a lot. max would actually like to join cobra kai but 1) neil would throw a fit on various fronts and 2) lucas is in miyagi-do. max knows there's some rly intense beef between cobra kai and miyagi-do. ofc tory's filled her in on the karate war, how could she not?
well one day tory takes max to the playground to watch a plane fly like she does with miggy in ck, and it's nighttime, ofc, and lo, the full moon is out. shining up in the sky. they hear a howl. they both look at each other. max is kinda curious but tory's like nah, nah, we gotta go. she grabs her, starts pulling her along. but the next howl is a lot closer and they can hear smth running and it just sounds fuckin big. they're running too now, legs pumping hard, but there's no escape once the beast is right behind them, hot, rancid breath blasting the backs of their necks and harvest gold eyes glowing in the dark.
max gets bitten first. tory tries to kick the big ass beast off of her and then it rounds and bites her too. the terror is real now. and then shockingly, as fast as it'd come, it leaves. neither girl has an explanation for wtaf just happened but tory takes max home. billy gripes at her for being out late but helps her patch up. when susan learns what happens she decides to take max to get rabies shots right away. loads her up in the car, runs her off to the emergency room-- but when the bandages come off, they are no wounds.
tory's bby bro tries to help patch her up too. but he's like 4 yrs old and his idea of "help" is sticking bandaids with cartoon characters up and down the wounds in haphazard fashion. tory plans to redo it all properly once she's put him to bed. sure enough after he's asleep, and she peels the bandaids off from every open mouthed pac-man to every green teenage mutant ninja turtle, the wounds are gone.
meanwhile there's missing ppl err day on the news. terry turns kids and teens but kills adults for the lulz.
tory and max know what happened to them was an event that tangibly, definitely happened but neither have any explanation for their wounds just disappearing. max, our resident horror fan, is the first to propose a real life werewolf as an explanation. she cites the missing ppl on the news. tory thinks she's tripping balls but reluctantly gives an inch when she acknowledges no, she can't think of any other explanation.
life goes on. max tells lucas what happened only she leaves out the part abt tory bc she's not gonna tell a miyagi-do student she's kickin it w the enemy. he doesn't rly believe her, like how she didn't rly believe him about the upside-down in their canon. he thinks the horror movies are rotting her brain.
tory almost tells her dojo but she gets distracted being pissed off by sam and that should be her priority, right? sensei kreese is always going on abt getting back at the enemy. she spends her shifts daydreaming abt revenge bc it's more comforting than worrying abt past due bills and her mother looking paler by the day.
full moon next month comes around. neither tory nor max are cognizant of or during their first respective transformations. max's first kill is neil. she's seven feet of fur and fury, tears his ribcage open with claws like daggers and sinks her teeth into his putrid, maggoty heart. susan isn't home. billy is, but he doesn't hear any of the fracas. he's unconscious on the living room floor, crisscrossing impressions of neil's belt buckle blaring red on his back.
tory's first kill is sam. sam larusso wants to think she's a bully?? fine, tory will show her a bully. she hops the miyagi-do fence after hours. she just wants a fight. just a fight, they always fight. but then she's sprouting fur and tory as tory gives way to smth else. she'd not aware of being a person when she doesn't have fur. not really, all she knows is rage and ravenousness and the morsel below her has bunny rabbit wide eyes.
neither of them remember what they did the next day. not vividly, anyway. it's there but it's cloudy and hard to discern, like a groggy fever dream more than a memory. but max burps up neil's wedding band and tory finds señor octopus (sam's stuffed animal) bloodied in her bed. it's apparent what happened. max accepts this more easily than tory bc 1) she always kind of suspected she'd turn, since she sincerely considered what attacked them was a werewolf and 2) max isn't terribly upset abt killing neil while tory is acutely horrified she killed sam.
max kinda had some smidgen of attachment to neil bc like, he's the only father figure in her life and here and there they've had their moments. but his abuse (psychological/physical toward billy, sexual/financial/psychological/emotional toward susan, psychological/emotional toward herself) outweighed any and all of those moments. she is genuinely concerned that she tore a human being to pieces and only vaguely remembers it but like, if she had to kill anyone, she figures neil was the best to kill. max is mostly concerned bc she can't kill neil a second time. she's worried the next time she turns it could be an innocent person, or one of her friends, or her mom, or billy.
tory is blindsided and scarcely able to comprehend the reality, holy shit, max was right, she's a fuckin werewolf. and she's sick to her stomach bc she hated sam but she never wanted to do anything like that. she didn't want to kill, she just wanted to break her face. scare her. rough her up. she didn't want to eat her. she just killed someone. she's a literal horror movie monster and she just killed sam. what's miguel going to think?
tory and max talk. they decide they need to find the werewolf who turned them. we get montages of them going over the news articles with a fine-toothed *ba dum tss* comb and searching areas where it seems like a werewolf would be. the woods. some caves. max all of a sudden has a freakishly tall man constantly hounding her to join cobra kai. neil's gone but she still hesitates bc of lucas being in miyagi-do. also he believes max now and with the proff, she's decided to let the rest of the party in as well. they also exist in this 'verse. she showed them the crime scene and the wedding band she burped up. billy isn't a roid rage racist in this 'verse bc that would be a giant buzzkill. he doesn't believe the werewolf shit either. he thinks max saw neil get attacked by some animal and that the carnage was so traumatizing for her, she subconsciously created a werewolf fantasy to cope.
tory meanwhile spirals downward. bc she passes sam's memorialized locker in the hall everyday. her memorial table in the other hall, full of sticky note condolences and mournful teddy bears, and a picture of sam right in the center always, always accusing her. miggy is heartbroken and distraught. hawk didn't care for sam but even he's freaked out by what happened, how the news said there were only torn up chunks and bones picked clean found in her bedroom. tory is terrified of herself. she's desperate to find whoever did this bc she wants to make them pay. if sensei silver has been asking her extra questions lately and presenting her performance to the class more than normal, she doesn't notice at all. aisha notices tory's fucked up but tory can't exactly tell aisha that she *ate* sam. aisha is also mourning, she and sam used to be bffs. so she doesn't say a word.
max has a theory that if u can learn to control ur anger, u can learn to control urself when u shift. she is, after all, v familiar with angry horror movie werewolves. and she's savvy enough to know it's smth she and tory have in common. neil is dead but that doesn't mean max isn't angry anymore. she's still angry at the damage already done and tbh also angry that there's some werewolf around turning ppl willy nilly bc she recognizes the danger in that and it wasn't smth she consented to. but controlling ur anger is an easier feat for max than tory insofar that max has a support system w her friends, and better relationships with the remainder of her fam. tory has two mentors actively, adamantly teaching her and her friends to be ruthless, view the world as ur enemy, use violence as ur go-to solution, and that mercy is weakness not to be tolerated.
when the next full moon rolls around, they decide to spend it together under the correct inference that they will transform. they think it's better to be together. they're hoping they'll be able to control each other, if not themselves. or that if they are both mindless rage monsters again, that rage will be turned on each other. this would be a better outcome operating on the presumption that one werewolf will be able to take what another can dish out, at the v least more so than a regular human being.
max is successfully able to maintain enough of her consciousness to control her actions once transformed. she feels aggressive and hungry, but not enraged and ravenous. she can keep it in check. tory, on the other hand, uh...tory can't do it. she throws her wolf head back in the most bloodcurdling howl ever and takes off like a bat outta hell. max goes loping after her. they can't speak like human speak in this form, but max tries to communicate with her. whimpers plaintively. tackles tory at one point, not out of anger but just tryna subdue her, licks at her ears and tries to get her to settle. tory bucks her off.
tory runs off again, max in pursuit. they wind up at the skate park where billy n robby are prolly up to some fuckery or another. i could easily see pre miyagi-do robby n billy getting up to all kinds of mischief. ooh, actually, they're prolly arguing abt that. now that robby's in miyagi-do he has another outlet for all his energy and he's getting the positive attention he craves so he's not participating in hooligan activity or shenanigans w billy anymore and billy is like. offended. except suddenly there's werewolves. fucking. snarling, gigantic, toothy, hairy ass werewolves.
let's say robby kicked miguel down two stories in this 'verse too and tory recognizes him in her werewolf form even if she isn't exactly cognizant of herself. she tears straight for him, jaws open. billy doesn't exactly *mean* to protect him but it's kinda an automatic reaction from putting himself in between whenever he thought neil was getting too aggressive w susan or max. and like, sure, robby's the better fighter (not that billy would ever acknowledge this) but it's not like he's gonna karate kick the motherfuckin werewolf anyway-- billy is bigger, he's bigger and it's instinct and the next thing he knows, he's in between robby and the thing w sharp teeth (tory).
and that's when max gets serious. she bowls tory over, away from billy before she can bite. they're rolling, tearing at each other with teeth and claws. lo and behold, terry silver is lurking in the background like the evil mastermind he is, just watching them shred each other and evaluating his experiment. it's a p close match and tory is the more aggressive of the two but she's also been going, going, going since she shifted and she's burning herself out. she's also fighting with the blind instinct of a threatened animal while max maintains more precision bc she has better control of herself. max also isn't wasting energy unnecessarily. max gets her jaws around tory's throat and tory just goes slack. but she can think and she doesn't want to hurt tory, so she opens her mouth and relaxes her maw, teeth grazing harmlessly thru tory's fur.
tory's being shown mercy. possibly for the first time. it's so unlike her conception of others' ruthlessness, so unlike the worldview that's been instilled into her that it startles her enough to crack thru to her cognizance. she does the wolfy deference thing where they tuck their tails and lick at the dominant pack member's muzzle. max responds in kind and lets tory up.
this is when they notice terry lurking (billy's already worked out the werewolf that came to his defense is max so he's just dumbfounded watching all this shit, and robby's not abt to leave someone who just saved his ass, so he's stuck unsuccessfully tryna pull billy away and inevitably watching too). terry calmly slinks over, sizing up his charges. he's pleased with the performance. but tory and max are anything but, another werewolf fight ensues.
so while they all get huge after transforming sheerly on the basis of being werewolves, i'm gonna guess the size is proportionate to their human forms. so tory is a little larger than max and terry significantly outsizes them both. terry is also the more experienced werewolf. it's two against one but it's not the curbstop it would be if this was some weaksauce werewolf, it's dramatic evil karate werewolf terry fuckin silver. terry's shredding tf outta these two. their healing factor can't keep up, he's dishing out faster than either of them can recover and tbh they were already winded from fighting each other first.
but it'd be a major buzzkill if our movie had a downer ending. and also, the power of determination and friendship and shit. terry's got his jaws around max's throat now. he's a millisecond away from tearing it open. tory's pinned under him but she thinks fast, frees a hind leg, and rips her claws down his soft underbelly as deep as she can and doesn't stop ripping, like pedal kicking almost for a human, but with her hind claws. his intestines shoot out like paper snakes from a gag candy can!! okay, well, maybe they don't shoot out w that much gusto, but still. the bowels are free, the bowels are hanging low and tory's tearing 'em tf up, fluids n fecal matter errywhere. on tory. i'm sorry tory. ur under him, that's just how gravity works.
terry dies. healing factor can't keep up with the damage done, it's too critical. but nobody knows it's terry until the dawn breaks and he reverts back to his human shape.
max is v much 'i told u so,' in billy's face. robby promises not to tell. he doesn't want to get mauled or killed or anything. tory's able to cope better with what she did to sam knowing that it won't happen again, that she won't hurt anyone else she doesn't want to be she can control herself now. tory believes in mercy now bc max spared her, she trashes kreese's philosophy and joins eagle fang when johnny and daniel join forces in this 'verse too. max also joins eagle fang, takes her place in the front row right between tory and lucas at her v first practice.
credits roll.
after the credits we see tory considering turning her mother in the hopes that having the healing factor would help her mom's condition improve.
is that a teaser for the sequel?
idfk.

Hope you don’t mind me asking but you are well versed in horror films. What would you recommend as a good place to start for someone who is not comfortable with demons or jumpscares? (Ghosts are fine but there’s something about demons that really unsettle me for some reason) thanks!!!
I don’t mind at all!! honestly I love answering questions like these, I grew up with horror so I love helping other people figure out what they might like.
before I start, I do wanna note that jumpscares have a very broad, kinda vague definition. it really all depends on your personal sensitivity! so while some of these movies have scenes that are technically labeled as jumpscares, they may not actually read like that onscreen. a good resource I think is wheresthejump.com, and I’ll be providing links for each movie that has a profile on the website. regardless, I’ll make sure to only rec movies that I don’t consider to have blatant jumpscares and that only have minor jumpscare ratings on the site. and bc I’ll be linking you to the profiles directly, you’ll be able to decide for yourself if it’s something you want to actually consume. the profiles will both describe what the jumpscares are, how major or minor they are, and the exact time stamps they occur at. if the movie doesn’t have a profile on the website, u should ostensibly be safe!
here we go!
my personal first introduction to horror was the lost boys (1987) and I cannot recommend it enough. really classic 80s horror, vampires, extremely Gender and extremely Homosexual Subtext. a young boy and his family move to santa carla and his older brother accidentally gets turned into a vampire bc he’s trying to impress the local hot boys! he’s technically trying to impress literally the only woman his age in the movie, but look. the vampire men look Like That, he was trying to impress the local hot boys. (no profile on wheresthejump)
I also have to rec scream (1996) bc it is my absolute favorite horror film. this movie is like a really classic teen slasher but, and I’m sure u already know what I’m about to say if you’ve followed this blog for more than 24 hours, it is full of incredible twists. absolutely deconstructed the entire slasher subgenre and is the reason the Film Nerd Who Knows Everything About Horror trope was popularized. it absolutely does not take itself seriously and there’s a lot of outside references to other horror projects the director was involved in and honestly that’s what makes it genius. it thinks its a joke! it treats itself like a joke, but it’s not. also sidney prescott is like THE horror franchise frontwoman, thank u miss neve campbell (wheresthejump profile)
okay other recs that I’m hopefully gonna not talk as long about since I’m trying not to make this Super Long:
us (2019) everything jordan peele has ever done, horror wise, is a masterpiece. the man simply knows what he’s doing. this one has a family vacation gone wrong, dopplegangers, and an overall amazing narrative. (wheresthejump profile)
van helsing (2004) this may perhaps be way too cheesy to label as a horror movie but look I love it and it’s been a favorite of mine for a very long time so I’m including it. hugh jackman plays van helsing! real fun vampire hunting. (wheresthejump profile)
when a stranger calls (1979) the call is coming from inside the house! your classic babysitter horror but like. it was the Blueprint for classic babysitter horror, u know? absolutely amazing, one of my favorites. (wheresthejump profile)
the raven (2012) one of my favorite movies, even outside of horror! it’s actually labeled as a crime mystery/thriller but we all know how I feel about thrillers being horror. also it’s a serial killer so like. horror film. anyway it’s based on edgar allan poe and he has to help solve murders based on his own stories! really neat premise! (no profile on wheresthejump)
coraline (2009) technically marketed as a fantasy kid’s film but look shit is SCARY. I watched it for the first time when I was 18 and I was spooked. really cool kinda adventure-y thing where she finds a portal to an alternate universe and hangs out with her Other Family and has fun initially but then things get Weird. (no profile on wheresthejump)
don’t look under the bed (1999) this shit was apparently so scary that disney had to take it off the air for a Very Long Time after it was first released on the channel. what happens when u forget your imaginary friends? apparently boogeymen! one of my absolute favorite movies in the entire world, I was always so excited when it actually was on tv (no profile on wheresthejump)
lady in white (1988) ghosts! this one’s just really neat. narrated story about a little boy in the 60s who sees a murder and gets haunted afterwards. but like in a cool way!! he helps the ghosts it's neat (no profile on wheresthejump) (no demons)
the frighteners (1996) another favorite of mine that I just love to death. this one’s part comedy! michael j fox gets into a car accident that kills his wife and can talk to spirits after that so he makes friends with them to stage hauntings and scam people out of money by pretending to get rid of them. things get wild tho when he finds an evil ghost pretending to be the grim reaper that is actually the ghost of a serial killer from however long ago and is now marking victims to kill them later. (no profile on wheresthejump) (evil spirits but no demons, it is very clear that he is just a regular, human serial murderer turned ghost)
hope this was helpful! I tried to give a good little sample mix of some of my favorites that weren’t Too Gross and didn’t rely on just blaring loud music and shoving a scary picture in your face for no reason. overall I’d say probably creature features and slashers might be your best bet for avoiding jumpscares and demonic narratives? older movies as well will rely on jumpscares less so that’s something to keep in mind. if you’re ever unsure, make sure to use wheresthejump.com for descriptions/time stamps/ratings of jumpscares and check out doesthedogdie.com as well! doesthedogdie originated to warn about animal death in horror, but it has a wide array of phobias and potential triggers that it tracks too, so it’s good for a number of things.
also delving into horror that’s marketed for kids slaps. there’s a lot less possibility that it’s gonna be gross just for the sake of it and those usually don’t have jumpscares. they’re also a lot more creative! it’s why I added coraline and don’t look under the bed to the list, I truly just think horror that’s marketed for children is amazing bc it doesn’t have the ability to rely on tired, cheap gimmicks to get their scares. I hope this doesn’t come off as me being like patronizing or anything bc I truly am being genuine, like as a fan of the genre I just love children’s horror. I recommend that everyone checks it out bc it is absolutely unparalleled, so like definitely delve into that a little, too.

HC MEME  ✹  romance
Tumblr media
name: Sonia Nevermind
nickname: None
gender: Female
romantic orientation: heterosexual and heteroromantic. There’s one ship that may change this, but as it has yet to come to fruition I’m going to keep it like this. Sonia doesn’t really have any romantic or sexual interest in women.
preferred pet names: She quite likes it when Gundham calls her ‘Dark Queen,’ but otherwise she doesn’t have preferred pet names.
relationship status: Verse-dependent. Each one of her ships is in a separate verse, some of which are clearly defined right now as a couple in an exclusive relationship. Others are more romantic interest and relationship limbo.
favorite canon / fandom ship: In no particular order, the top 4: Hajime/Sonia, Gundham/Sonia, Byakuya/Sonia, and Kazuichi/Sonia (very storyline-dependent, but could still happen). I’d be open to trying others if muns are interested but I’d like to discuss it first.
favorite crossover ship: Of course I love the one I currently have, which is Sonia/Kensuke from Caligula Effect with @spurnedadulthood ! Other crossovers I’d love to do with interested muns are Sonia/Van Helsing (Code: Realize), Sonia/Kent (Amnesia), and Sonia with either Reiji or Ruki from Diabolik Lovers. I’m open to various crossover ships from other fandoms too, but those are the highest on my wishlist.
opinion on true love: Sonia believes in true love, and finds it to be one of the most beautiful aspects of life. It’s rare and very special when people manage to find it, recognize it, and embrace it, and she will always support those in her life who do manage to discover it. But for her specifically, she’s unsure about it. It takes a lot of convincing for her to believe that true love, real love, and royal obligations can work together. She has little interest in the type of man her parents would prefer she date and marry, and her family’s various affairs while refusing to divorce doesn’t help sweeten her opinion of true love for herself.
opinion on love at first sight: Sonia adores it in novels and films but finds it unrealistic. Mostly as she’s used to people proclaiming their love for her without knowing much, if anything, substantial about her.
how ‘romantic’ are they?: She can be romantic, but she needs to feel permitted to do so, both with her official royal duties and that the other person is comfortable with the idea. Sonia adores letting her love interests share their hobbies and interests with her, as she enjoys learning what makes them happy and engage with the world. Her love languages include words of reassurance, love, and support, hugs and kisses, and gift-giving, especially the gift of her undivided attention. When she really cares for someone, she has no trouble being very clear with her parents and her staff that her significant other or love interest comes first.
ideal physical traits: She doesn’t have many specific ones, but she does prefer when people take care of and respect themselves, including their bodies. She also admires people who are able to express themselves through their appearance, as she is not often able to do so. Appearing royal at all times is important to her family.
ideal personality traits: Thoughtful, compassionate, kind, smart, and someone who wants to make the world a better place. Wit and wisdom are always appreciated, as well as being well-read and open to learning about new cultures and traditions. Sonia’s quite extroverted and sociable but still enjoys her downtime as well, often with books or films. She’d love to share that with her significant other.
unattractive physical traits: Unwashed or generally unkempt, sloppy attire. Sonia’s not too terribly shallow, but she does know that anyone romantically linked to her will likely be put in the public spotlight. And she wants to be sure that such a person can tolerate whatever the press throws at them.
unattractive personality traits: Insecurity, hatred, spitefulness, prejudiced, people obsessed with wealth, appearance, and money, people who are mean to children and/or animals, people who are rude to employees, members of staff, or anyone else below their socio-economic class (and to people in general), and of course, people who only value her, wish to get to know her, date her, or want anything to do with her just because she’s a beautiful princess.
ideal date: Sonia quite enjoys exploring, whether it’s an experience in Japan she’s yet to try or traveling elsewhere around the world. She’s very much a person who enjoys learning something new every day. But she also appreciates quiet days where she can watch her favorite shows or read for hours on end. Anything that allows her to be herself, instead of the Princess of Novoselic.
do they have a type?: Someone who fits the ideal personality traits, really. Other than that she’s not terribly picky on physical features. She has no problem dating a man who is shorter than her.
average relationship length: Her only past relationship was five months. So otherwise, there isn’t much of an average to go by.
preferred non-sexual intimacy: Long conversations, hugs of all sorts (those sorts of gentle hugs that come from curling up on someone for a long period of time? She loves them), kisses on the forehead, cheeks, and lips, hand-holding. If she really trusts someone, she’ll allow them to pick her up, mostly as she’s afraid of being accidentally dropped.
commitment level: When Sonia is in a relationship, she is fully committed. She cannot fathom or tolerate infidelity, emotionally or physically. It’s a big turnoff for her and something she finds very difficult to forgive. If your muse really wants to hurt Sonia? Cheat on her, throw her affections back in her face and declare their physical and emotional love to someone else in front of her. It will be very difficult to have her trust your muse again. It’s why she can’t participate in polyamory or open relationships, either.
opinion of public affection: Sonia personally enjoys respectful public affection (nothing too passionate or lewd), but she has to be mindful of how she’s viewed by others. It’s not uncommon for her to be recognized and photographed on the street and she has to represent Novoselic in a positive way.
past relationships?: Julien Bassert, Earl of Affrey and heir apparent to the Duke of Lenzbourg (provided he doesn’t succeed in marrying into the Novoselic Royal Family, of course)
tagged by: @trinitytalents tagging: You! Because this is a longer meme and takes some time to fill out, I didn’t want to call out anyone specifically to do it.

1. Little bit of fun riffing off the witch(es?) That had a thing for Dracula in the first film and to a certain extent the whole Vlad + Witches gag in HT3 itself. Ericka strikes me as less likely to get jealous than Drac. The guy definitely have some anxiety problems when it comes to being left alone that Ericka doesn't have. She's pretty darn confident in both herself and how lovestruck he is. Instead, she's alot more likely to get smug and brag about him to others - as long as they don't make him uncomfortable, hurt him, or seriously try and come between them. She can't say she blames the witches for being charmed by him, after all. She finds him irresistable herself.
2. Had a version of this WIR-Verse conversation in my head for a long time. There are alot of reasons I think Drac wouldn't be that keen on Venkmen, largely because he's the mouthiest and most money-focused one of the Boys in Grey. But also because Venkman is a flirt who has a reputation for hitting on most attractive women that visit the headquarters, Ericka and Mavis being no exception. Ericka however knows how to handle him and sees through her friend: He's a jerk with a heart of gold and has a zing of his own: Dana Barret. Even if he's not the best at SHOWING that. (Plus his greed, grey morality and ladies man tendencies are useful things for getting her way.)
Bonus bits that never made it in here:
"He flirts with every woman that comes in. Even flirted with Mavis once."
"Vhat!?"
"**Chuckles** Relax, Papa Wolf. I took care of it. I told him she's married and if he tried anything on our daughter, I'd zap him with his own proton pack."
" **Smiles and chuckles** That'z perfect!"
"Besides, everyone knows he zinged with this musician, Dana Barret. Nice lady, Clever too. And played by Sigourney Weaver. Even if I WANTED, there's no way I could compete with someone played by the Queen of Science Fiction herself."
"....😏😊Vell-"
"Oh no. Don't you even start."
"Ztart vhat? 😏
"Teasing me with flattery. You know, something like 'I think you're far more beautiful and anyone would be honored to have you'"
"Vell, it IZ true!😉💖"
"**giggles, trying to hide her blush** Mmhmm. Careful with that Silver tongue of yours, Count. You'll burn yourself."

A Brief Guide to Early Literary Dracula AUs
One of the coolest things about being a Dracula fan in the 2010s is all the recent publication of materials shedding light on all of the really bonkers alternate Draculas that either nearly became Dracula itself or spun off from the original 1897 text. So yeah... here’s a rundown of the three weird psuedo-canonical AUs that this fin de siecle vampire novel just sort of... comes with.
Stoker's Notes/Typescript/"Dracula's Guest"
Bram's notes for Dracula indicate that he worked on the novel for at least seven years, that it went through many substantial changes in its plot and cast, and that he had a lot of completely metal ideas that either fate, his editors, or his slender grip on good taste did not permit to appear in the final novel. Some of these things appear in fragmentary form in the typescript for Dracula. Some of them got recycled into a short story later published as "Dracula's Guest." Some of them only appear scrawled in Stoker's atrocious handwriting on the various papers collected at the Rosenbach in Philadelphia.
Highlights:
Things initially were going to take place in Styria and the villain's name was going to be Count Wampyr.
Arthur doesn't exist and Jack/Lucy is canon.
Jonathan Harker has a "shrewd, skeptical sister."
There's a third heroine named Kate Reed (or Kate Lee) who is school chums with Lucy and Mina and apparently helps to spread the flow of gossip about Lucy and her curly-hair beau going to St. James concerts.
There's a painter named Francis who probably discovers that the Count (in addition to having no reflection and showing up as a skeleton in photographs) cannot even be painted.
Other unused characters include a philosophic historian, a paranormal investigator, and a pair of deaf/mute servants in the Count's employ.
The Count has a secret chamber where everything is blood red, and it's apparently really scary.
Quincey might be a professional inventor named Brutus Marix. He also might go to Transylvania in the middle of the book. Also, he just might SAVE THE DAY DURING THE FINAL BATTLE BY OPENING FIRE WITH AN EARLY FORERUNNER TO THE MACHINE GUN.
There appear to have been werewolves planned.
Jack has a spooky party at his house where everyone has to tell a ghost story like they're living it up at the Villa Diodati. Dracula shows up and is the thirteenth guest at this super goth affair and presumably tells the spookiest story of all.
Jonathan spends three chapters/100 pages doing all sorts of crazy stuff that happens before what we now think of a Chapter 1 of Dracula. These shenanigans include encountering the Count pretending to be dead in a Munich leichenhaus, going to see a performance of The Flying Dutchman, and doing all that incredibly spooky stuff in "Dracula's Guest" where he has adventures with wolf friends on Walpurgisnacht.
Castle Dracula sinks into the earth in a VOLCANIC EXPLOSION after Dracula dies.
There is also mention of Dracula FLYING out of his coffin into the air during the final confrontation and the Brides getting taken out by chance BOLTS OF LIGHTNING.
Seriously. We have legitimate evidence that were we but in the true and righteous timeline, Dracula would have ended with lightning bolts and machine guns going off in an aerial vampire battle before a volcano explodes.
Makt Myrkranna (AKA Powers of Darkness AKA Icelandic Bootleg Porno Dracula)
So a few years after Dracula was published, it appears that somebody in Sweden ripped it off, made it much much more Hammer Horror, and published it as their own thing called Mörkrets Makter (Powers of Darkness). Then, after that, Valdimar Ásmundsson in Iceland ripped that off and republished it as his own thing called Makt Myrkranna (...also Powers of Darkness). This latter work just got translated into English in 2017, and there's been intense speculation as to whether or not whomever originally wrote this thing had anything to do with Bram Stoker and his early drafts for the novel, given that it is headed by a preface that is controversially claimed to have been written by Bram, himself.
Highlights:
The first four chapters of the book (the ones everyone tends to really like) are now massively massively expanded, and Jonathan Harker (now named Thomas) gets to spend much more time exploring the castle, trying to escape, having the Count tell him creepy sexual anecdotes, and watching busty women get murdered.
The three women in the castle have been condensed into one woman, who seems to be the Count's vampiric, incesty bride/cousin/whatever and whose death involved her being locked in a bedroom with her lover until he went mad and threw himself out a window.
Instead of finding a secret room of boxes with dirt in them, Jonathan Thomas finds a secret ritual orgymurder room where primordial ape men engage in forbidden revels while the Count bites hypnotized virgins to death.
Everything that is not in the massively expanded castle section is barely sketched out summaries of lots and lots of wacky things happening with no real explanation (apparently these portions were treated with more detail in at least one version of Mörkrets Makter, but that's not available in English yet).
Lucy (now Lucia) becomes a vampire, but she is never staked, and her plot is never really resolved. Arthur, convinced she is alive after people watch her get back up from being dead, orders that people leave out some blankets and snacks for her (very considerate), and then that thread just sort of ends.
Renfield doesn't exist. Jack sort of makes up for this gap in the novel's tragically dead madmen quota by going mad and dying himself.
Said going mad and dying is facilitated by him attending one two many freaky mesmerism parties at Carfax with the Count's posse of debauched, anarchist, international conspirator, orgymurder cultist noblemen.
Then like... a mysterious violinist shows up at his asylum and the next thing you know, the Count & Co. have taken over the joint, Quincey has to pretend to go crazy to infiltrate, and the entire place burns down.
There is actually some sort of police investigation into all of the many many many illegal things going on. After Van Helsing knifes Dracula to death, Quincey takes the fall for him, but the investigators don't end up taking him to trial.
Kazıklı Voyvoda (AKA Impaling Voivode AKA Dracula in Istanbul AKA Turkish Nationalist Propaganda Bootleg Dracula)
Taking a cue from Ásmundsson and whomever the Mörkrets Makter guy is (or not...), Turkish author Ali Rıza Seyfi wrote his own pirated version of Dracula and published it as his own work in 1928. Unlike the Makt Mykrannaverse, the world of Kazıklı Voyvoda is fairly faithful to the original text... save that the action is transposed from London to Istanbul, the events of the story now postdates the Turkish War of Independence, and the entire cast (Dracula excepted) is now very Turkish and very fond of waxing eloquent about their immense national pride in being very Turkish.
Highlights:
Dracula is explicitly identified as being Vlad III, and he is a marauding terrible foreign menace from the exotic West, persecuting the good Eastern folk of Istanbul just as he historically persecuted and impaled their ancestors before them. Anyone who has ever read and enjoyed any academic essay on Dracula and the colonial gaze may begin to salivate uncontrollably.
Forty-seven years before Salem’s Lot, Seyfi establishes that pretty much any religious symbol works on a vampire if you believe in it, and everyone throughout the text waves around charms made out of suras of the Koran and such to great effect.
Azmi (Jonathan) gets the tiniest scraps of expanded backstory in which we learn about his childhood predisposition towards fainting and the existence of his pious mother who took him to saints’ shrines in the hopes he might faint less.
Güzin (Mina) is no longer one of Dracula’s victims (unlike in the 1953 film adaptation of this book). She is, however, still an incredibly hardcore researcher nerd who makes sure to tell her fiance all sorts of cool Vlad III history facts.
Turan (Arthur), Afif (Jack), and Özdemir (Quincey) all served together during the war and became bros that way instead of just being three guys who went on crazy globetrotting adventures together before all independently deciding to propose to the same girl.
Resuhȋ (Van Helsing) makes sure to drop a line reminding everyone of that time they all did blood tests and found out their blood types are compatible... you know... just in case anybody in this post-blood-typing era might be doing a bunch of blood transfusions and worrying about fatal hemolytic reactions.

The traditional Vampire Hunter uniform (a short history of vampire hunting fashion):
As early as 1985 Tom Holland (Director and writer of Fright Night) noticed most vampire hunters wore a particular type of outfit.
The costume usually consists of a dark, late nineteenth century suit, and either a long duster style / Sherlockian coat with a mantle, or coat with long cape that covers the shoulders.  Often there are white cuffs sticking out of the coat from the suit. Sometimes a cross or crucifix hangs from the neck.
The Vampire Hunter’s uniform:
First we have Dr. Van Helsing from the Hammer films as portrayed by Peter Cushing.
Since he is in a few movies I will be providing a few examples from this character.
Here he is wearing a fur trimmed long coat instead of one with a cape or mantle but the long coat gets its start right here.
From Dracula (Horror of Dracula in the US) from 1958:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here he is in the velvet jacket that is often worn under the long coat as most vampire hunters seem to be subtle dandies or fops.

Here he is in another long jacket but again, no mantle or cape.

In 1978 the second book in Fred Saberhagen’s Dracula series was published.  This was the Holmes-Dracula File.   The idea of Sherlock verses Dracula may have helped to solidify the idea of the “Vampire Hunter uniform” in our cultural consciousness.  Later in the book series Dracula would again encounter Sherlock in the 8th novel of the series, Seance for a vampire.   He also turned up in the short story From the Tree of Time.

In 1985 Peter Vincent (partially modeled after Peter Cushing) as portrayed by Roddy McDowall.  At this point the costume was so much a part of vampire hunting lore that the has-been horror movie actor turned actual vampire hunter felt the need to put on his own old movie costume before facing the forces of darkness, which is just adorable.  His version consists of the velvet Victorian jacket suit (like Peter Cushing), the Sherlockian deerstalker duster coat with mantle and exposed rumpled or lace cuffs. This is very much a Dandy Van Helsing-esque look.
As Peter Vincent wore this outfit in contemporary scenes (1980s) he is the first neo-Victorian vampire hunter.
Neo-Victorian is a sub-genre of Goth aesthetic in which someone likes to wear mid to late nineteenth century fashion (particularly dandy style fashion) in modern times.

Peter Vincent was usually portrayed by Roddy McDowall but a remake and a sequel to that remake (which was yet another reboot) were made in 2011.  These are not described here as those versions of Peter Vincent do not have the iconic vampire hunter’s costume.  However in 2016 a documentary about the original Fright Night was made along with four false movie trailers featuring Simon Bamford doing fairly good job of playing the classic version of Peter Vincent, who also served to narrate parts of the documentary.

I gave Peter Vincent extra attention here because his costume would have an influence on vampire fiction for many years to come.  The idea of contemporary vampire hunters wearing neo-Victorian fashion and the basis for many spoofs for years to come.

In example here we have Von Goosewing from Count Duckula in 1988.

David Warner as Professor McCarthy (the Vampire hunter) in My best friend’s a vampire in 1987.  Though set in 1987 he wears a suit that would have been passable in 1887.  Proving yet again that vampire hunting is a thin excuse to revel in neo-Victorian fashion

Blade The Vampire Hunter has the long leather jacket. (1997).   His jacks the mantle and would become iconic on it’s own.

In 1999 Angel started to wear a long jacket for his own TV show, the spin-off from Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997).  Angel was the “Good Guy” vampire who fought other vampires.

Spike, also of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) and Angel (1999) wore a long leather jacket in nearly all of his appearances.  This became a trademark for the character.

Neither one has the mantle or cape but they continue the tradition of male vampire / monster hunters wearing long jackets.

Here is Hugh Jackman in the traditional duster with mantle (but now leather) in the film Van Helsing from 2004.  His character was Gabriel Van Helsing.

In the Hellsing OVA (2006) the anime portrayed Doctor Abraham Van Helsing wearing a red version of the cloth duster jacket with mantle.

Later in that same anime Alucard (Dracula) himself, out of respect for Abraham, would wear a similar (if not the very same) coat when going into battle.

Again we have the brown coat but no mantle.

Harry Dresden of The Dresden Files joins this list as in the 12th book in The Dresden Files urban fantasy novel series he successfully wipes out the entire Red Court of Vampires (save for perhaps two surviving vampires).  Harry Dresden is a wizard and private investigator but he also earns his place as a vampire hunter, having successfully killed an entire court of vampires.   He wears a long coat with mantle.  Harry Dresden has appeared in the Dresden Files novels by Jim Butcher, the Dresden Files comics, and the short lived Dresden Files TV series for The Scifi Channel (Now Syfy).
He’s had two versions of the coat.  First was cloth and then later leather, both are long and have the classic mantle.
Dresden Files (2000- still going)

Here’s another spoof vampire hunter heavily inspired by Peter Vincent from the original Fright Night.  This one is Van Rental from Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires.

In the Castlevania franchise we have another Alucard but this one is Dracula’s son.  (Note: The name Alucard is just Dracula spelt backward).
Alucard wears the long jacket with cape and suit underneath.  (1980s to present)

Vincent Van Ghoul from The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo (originally voiced by Vincent Price) was first established in 1985 as a homage to Vincent Price and Doctor Strange (from Marvel comics).  He was a sorcerer who assigned Scooby and Shaggy with the task of tracking down thirteen ghosts that they had allowed to escape from a magical chest.  Later the character was revised to be a has-been B horror actor, much like Peter Vincent from Fright Night.  As the original version of this character helped to track down escaped ghosts I am allowing him to be on this list.

The Has-been actor version wears flamboyant Victorian fashion in recent depictions in Scooby Doo.

Honestly, I love the eccentric neo-Victorian vampire hunter costume uniform, especially when it’s worn in a contemporary set story, showing how little the hunter cares about what others think of him, because he just loves the old fashioned and slightly flamboyant look, damn it!  Peter Vincent is my personal favorite on this list as it covers practically all the tropes.

Further note:
Honestly, I sincerely wish we could get a female vampire hunter who dresses like those guys.  I am tired of all female vampire hunters wearing baby tank tops that show off their midriff and skin tight leather pants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to see a female vampire hunter wear the classic costume one day.
I want a woman wearing some elaborate neo-Victorian style costume (preferably male clothes, for practicality purposes and NOT with leather pants or heels!).  I’m bored with the sexy female vampire hunter trope, let’s swap.
