365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #31: Angel (aka Danny Boy) (1982) - dir. Neil Jordan

Blessed with vibrant cinematography by Chris Menges, a haunting score by Keith Donald and Stephen Rea in his first starring role in film, Angel is an impressive debut by filmmaker Neil Jordan. Protagonist Danny (Rea) is a happy-go-lucky saxophonist who travels from town to town in Ireland, an itinerant jazz-rocker who doesn’t mind a bit of womanizing when he’s not playing onstage. One night, after witnessing the murder of his manager (Peter Caffrey) and a young deaf-mute girl who came to the show (Veronica Quilligan), Danny finds his world turned upside down. His shock morphs into a desire for revenge, mobilizing him to hunt down the killers. Set to the sound of mournful jazz melodies, Angel is part detective story and part romance, but primarily it observes the struggles that Danny experiences after a trauma so great that his senses of personal and national identity are shattered. Certainly his newfound political awareness awakens a capacity for violence that he may never have known existed within him; in a way you could call Angel the opposite of The Crying Game, in which Jordan and Rea explore how extreme violence pushes a man away from politics and instead toward a new life with possibilities of love and kindness.

Also featuring supporting performances by Honor Heffernan, Marie Kean, Ray McAnally, Donal McCann, Sorcha Cusack, Lise Ann McLaughlin and Macrea Clarke, Angel is imperfect, mostly because the visuals and the music in the score and soundtrack are stronger than the content of the story being told, but the film is remarkably confident for the work of a first-timer, always reminding you that Neil Jordan is a talent to reckon with. As The Retro Set’s David Sharp wrote: “Angel is a showcase of everything that Jordan - and Rea in turn - would become known for: potent, pointed dialogue; deep significance imbued in every frame and gesture; and the negotiations between real and surreal, innocence and wisdom, Angel and brute.”
