Messily

The kitchen smells of coffee still, of juice, of cinnamon. There’s crumbs behind the toaster and a fingerprint in butter on the counter, and three chairs instead of one, and so many spoons in varying levels of stickiness. It’s a mess, and Harry can’t imagine a situation he would love better: heart dancing to the grumbling of the old washing machine, this is working, it’s actually working.

A sudden spike in the noise level makes his throat tighten. A squeal, then laughter, and laughter, and laughter. They’d tire themselves out in no time—Harry would walk in to find both man and boy crashed on the sofa, blue hair intertwined with blond, chests rising-falling-rising in heartbreaking unison. How could he ever imagine having this? When he didn’t even know it existed. When he had not an inkling of how lovely chaos could be, how freeing to invite it in, to let it sit.

“Harry!” from the living room. A hoarse shout, curved on the edge of a smile. “Harry, your godson is trying to steal—”

“No I’m not! Uncle Harry, I’m not! Your boyfriend is trying—” the rest is muffled. More laughter, big-big and bright.

And it’s all really his? Tumbling in his belly like their clothes in the washing machine. He takes a deep breath: coffee and juice, cinnamon. Saturday morning but entirely different.

More laughter from the living room, “Harry!” and “Uncle Harry!” at the same time. A final look at the kitchen: the counter definitely needs a wipe, and it’s coming up lunch time, they need to get ready. For now he takes another deep breath. Feels his heart dancing to the beat of the old washing machine, happy-happy-happy. His life in a way he could never have expected, chaotic and messy and utterly perfect.
