The way some people treat vengeance Clover is weird to me sometimes ngl. I'm not going to claim Clover doesn't have some sense of decency or fairness. They do. They don't kill Martlet in Snowdin and they wait for Starlo to duel before they shoot him.

However, I've seen a lot of people who almost sort of act like Clover is somehow justified in what they do?? It'll be a post where vengeance Clover is ranting to another character about how their actions are totally justified and the other character never gets a chance to argue back and defend themself and it honestly comes across as the maker being on Clover's side. I don't always think this is the intention, but when the other character doesn't get a chance to defend their position at all, it comes across that way. Monsters are not morally correct for being for the murder of children, but neither is Clover for murdering innocents, some of which were children.

The fanon portrayal of vengeance Clover often is that of a stone cold, logical arbiter of justice, when, in canon, Clover is anything but. When they lose the duel against Starlo and it's revealed Starlo never intended to kill them, Clover kills him anyway. When Mo approaches Clover in the Steamworks, after being nothing but helpful to Clover during the whole run, they threaten him and potentially rob him. It's not even like Clover needs the G. You cannot claim that Clover is only hostile to monsters who attacked them first.

Clover's brand of 'justice' is not objective; it can be influenced by Clover's emotions, and often this is anger. During the Axis fight, even before Axis reveals he killed Integrity, their soul twitches in the menus. They are getting impatient and angry. They kill Axis for no other reason than they are angry at him.

It's annoying because I do think vengeance Clover is an interesting character and there's room for analysis with them, but so often when I see someone say they like vengeance Clover it's a red flag because do you just like them as a character or are you going to subtly try to argue genocide is morally correct if the other side started it

Your sacrifice will be in vain.

Clover thought their sacrifice, even if it will be short lived before Flowey loads them back, would've kept Kanako safe. it did not. The poor girl was so devastated, so heartbroken that they died. Even if Ceroba was fond of the child, and Chujin still had his reservations, especially keeping himself from ratting the human child to the Royal Guard, neither of them had the sort of connection Kanako had.

In some ways, she saw Clover more than just a friend. Maybe... Maybe they could've been siblings in another life. But that reality crushed that hope after Clover sacrificed themselves to save her. And she blames herself because she wasn't more careful.

The four-leaf clover was meant to be a gift, something much more than just a mere good luck charm. But now she will never get the chance to give it to them.

She won't get the chance to mourn them either.

The Other Clover talks down to Clover, saying their mindset of blindly jumping in the way and killing themselves isn't going to help anyone. Though they are harsh about it, they are still willing to help Clover.

It's the least they could do, even if they're beyond redemption.

UTY ANNIVERSARY DAY 5 (just pretend that it is): Favorite Moment

I've mentioned in a previous post that the vengeance route hits very different, and the Steamworks was one of the things that really reeled me in. Between the parallels (or perpendiculars, I guess??) between this and Neutral/Pacifist, Clover being more defiant (and shooting a generator ig—) and Axis' sudden revelation, one they were not aware of, suddenly shooting Clover up seven levels? It's empowering and chilling all at the same time (I'm sorry, Axis o7)

It's kinda hard to say that I like this moment overall? But, it is the one that stands out to me the most, at least in this route specifically.

A close second would probably the Echoes of Another scene (which is something I'm probably going to ramble about at some point if this keeps up—)

I've seen some people claim that the Genocide route in Undertale Yellow has a plus that Clover survives, with some even using that to justify it happening in-universe, and this has always felt very strange to me, and I think I know why.

Clover doesn't really survive the route. Yes, they walk out alive, but how much can you really say it's Clover by the end? There's an absolute world of difference between even Neutral Clover and Geno Clover.

Neutral Clover, even if they'd killed most everyone in their path up to this point, can never bring themself to say no to Martlet's offer. At lower LV, they happily accept. Because at their core, Clover isn't some instrument of justice.

They're a child who wants a safe home. They want to be taken care of by their friends. They were running away from a bad life on the surface.

Geno Clover is so different because there's not even an option to accept at this point. The idea likely doesn't cross their mind at all.

Even when Geno Clover 'wins' and leaves the underground, it's not much of a victory. I don't think Clover is capable of being happy about what they did. They're not much of a person anymore. They're a husk.

And for the record, I don't think their violent and borderline sadistic tendencies would end at monsterkind. I'm not saying they'd go on a killing spree, but I just have a hard time believing they'd really be one to talk things out if someone disagreed with their methods.

GAME OVER. Or is it?

Clover wakes up in Void, a place between life and death, after their initial sacrifice saving Kanako from being crushed. However, even with the multitude of times they've died, this is the first time they've actually ever been here. At least, conscious enough to be aware.

And it seems like somebody was here waiting for them. Nothing would've prepared Clover of the aftermath of their death, especially with how gruesome it was. But hey, at least their sacrifice wasn't in vain, right?
