Cities - like other ecosystems - are constantly changing. They are either growing or declining, and even stagnation is decline. DC was shifting from stagnation to growth when I arrived 15 years ago. And our music venues are an interesting marker of that change. My first housemates warned that I couldn't walk to the Black Cat alone back then, even though if was only 4 blocks away from our house. Now it and the 9:30 club - where punk rock and go-go bands used to be double-billed -- are surrounded by fancy shops and restaurants. An historic African-American Theater nearby that was shuttered when I moved to town - the Howard--is open again and largely still putting shows on true to its musical roots. Other spots have shuttered (RIP Iota), and this year two new places have opened in the District that charge a lot of money to see touring national acts. So, when I walked by the tiny Velvet Lounge, and saw that it was the same as it ever was -- a messy, punky, tiny storefront featuring a neon sign with a martini glass, it made me a bit nostalgic for some of the gritty magic that DC has lost.
