Good News From Israel

In the 16th July 23 edition of Israel’s good news, the highlights include:

Israeli personally tailored therapies can cure infections and infertility.

Israeli surgeons don’t need electricity to save a life in Ethiopia.

Israeli scientists won awards from France and NASA.

A new European fund is to invest a quarter of a billion dollars in Israeli startups.

An Israeli startup will generate electricity from Taiwan’s choppy seas.

The Israel Premier Tech cycling team won the 9th stage of the Tour de France.

An Israeli NGO is saving the bees – one swarm at a time.

This newsletter edition is entitled "Chai-Tech", merging the term "Hi-Tech" with "Chai" - the Hebrew word for "Living" / "Lives". The reason is that there is so much recent news about Israeli technology to benefit human lives.

Almost all the medical articles involve Israelis using hi-tech to save lives, including breakthroughs in personalized medicine, global vaccines, stroke monitors, digital  insoles, brain disease diagnosis, prescription checkers and the innovations of Sheba Medical Center.

Israeli life-saving climate-tech features high in this newsletter with Israel's plans for a 1,000-strong delegation to COP28, the recent climate-tech delegation to the UK, 15 Israeli Climate Awards candidates, France's award to an Israeli hydrogen scientist, and Taiwan implementing Israel's wave energy solution.  Israeli hi-tech is also benefiting the environment by using seaweed to generate electricity, turning potato waste foliage into a food source, more vegan substitutes for meat, sustainable farming solutions and ultra-efficient space propulsion.

Other hi-tech programs include multi-million investments into Israeli companies developing 3D printed organs, security for schools, digital health, food-tech and agri-tech solutions. No wonder Israeli hi-tech startups are actively being sought by the US States of Virginia and Maryland.

The photo shows the construction of a solar roof over the soccer pitch of our local school in Netanya, providing shade to the young players, and green electricity for the school and the grid. Another "high"-tech solution making life better for the next generation.  Am Yisrael Chai!

different type of 素食 sùshí

If you see these words on products....

全素 quán sù -- vegan

奶素 nǎi sù -- this product is vegetarian but has milk/ dairy

蛋素 dàn sù -- this product is vegetarian but has egg

蛋奶素 (奶蛋素) dàn nǎi sù -- this product is vegetarian but has both milk and egg

五辛素 wǔ xīn sù -- *tricky one* this product is vegetarian but has one or more of the following veggies: onion/ chives/ green onion/ garlic/ shallot/ leek.

蔬食 shū shí -- uses production line that also processes non-vegetarian products.

say you encounter someone who is vegetarian,you can ask 你吃蛋嗎 (Nǐ chī dàn ma)? Please you don't ask 你吃蛋素嗎 (Nǐ chī dàn sù ma)? It is also okay to say 我吃全素 (wǒ chī quán sù) to indicate that you are vegan. It's not common to say 我是全素者wǒ shì quán sù zhě (lit. I'm vegan) or 我是素食者 wǒ shì sùshí zhě (I'm a vegetarian)

宗教素 zōngjiào sù On the surface, this means the person is vegetarian for religious reason, but it also means that he does not eat 五辛 = the five pungent vegetables mentioned above.

蔬食餐廳 shū shí cān tīng= a meat-free, plant-base restaurant (which includes 五辛)

齋 zhāi this also mean vegetarian, but it's not use in daily conversation and it carries a religious connotation. 吃齋 means they eat a vegetarian diet.

初一十五 chū yī shí wǔ = the 1st/15th day of a lunar month, when some people choose to eat vegetarian meals on that day.

早齋 zǎo zhāi this means vegetarian in the morning. (齋 does mean fast, but 早齋 doesn't mean to fast in the morning....)

opposite of 素 is 葷 hūn. People who aren't vegetarian will not go around identifying themselves as 葷食者. This word is used to indicate something isn't vegetarian. (ie. 這是葷的 zhè shì hūn de).

On the other hand, there are...

植物肉 zhí wù ròu (lit. plant meat) the likes of...beyond meat and such.

新豬肉 xīn zhū ròu (lit. new pork) a brand of plant meat, Omnipork.

G肉 this indicates the "chicken" is...vegetarian chicken, because 雞Jī sounds like G...

素肉 sù ròu (vegetarian meat) typically gluten or soy meat, the more traditional kind.

我們居然在大稻埕找到一間超好吃的蔬食餐廳🌱🍴，而且居然很幸運的沒有預約就搶到了最後的座位😍

「無所洋食」的咖哩不會辣，而且非常清爽，麻婆豆腐則是一口吃下滿滿的花椒味，從微麻，到後勁充滿了溫辣的口感。唐揚杏鮑菇則是用炸豆皮包括杏鮑菇，不會有油膩感，是很有層次的炸物😋

I am Afro-caribbean and Indian. Firstly India has the highest vegetarian population in the world, and in the Caribbean the rastafari have their whole ital movement/diet - which my Jamaican father is a massive believer in.

Das Topping ist eine Tamarinden Paste, die ich, gemeinsam mit veganer Sahne (ähnlich wie Schlagsahne), innere einer Vanilleschote, Kokosblütensirup und Agavendicksaft zubereitet habe. Zur Stabilität Agar Agar. Hierbei 4 Blatt Agar Agar auf 1 l. Steht auch immer hinten auf der Packung. Die Tamarinden Paste gibt es im Asia Regal. Bei der Zubereitung vorsichtig sein, da sie recht sauer ist. Wer das nicht mag, der kann auch gern Tonkabohnenpaste verwenden. 《The Art of Simple Foods》 A menu paying tribute to the master - Alice Waters

這套菜單，是chef Wendy獻給當代最具影響力的廚師－愛麗絲・華特絲(Alice Waters)的一首情歌。

Alice Waters被稱為慢食教母、美國傳奇米其林餐廳Chez Panisse創辦人、「從產地到餐桌」(farm to table)概念的重要推手，是年少時期chef Wendy的料理啟蒙老師。

十多年前在國外資訊取得不易的年代，一本翻譯書《食滋味》(The art of simple foods)，開啟了chef Wendy對有機在地農產的好奇，原來使用真正的食物來做菜，也可以簡單好吃。這在當時台灣流行的傳統法餐與社會氛圍中，仍屬小眾，又或者根本不被稱為料理。

時至今日，綠色飲食當道，更多人追求的，是乾淨天然的食物來源，加上廚師的巧手與創意，讓好食材，在餐桌上閃閃發光。

歲末年終，誠摯邀請，來fifteen享用由chef Wendy精心設計、溫馨療癒的限定料理，感受食物的真實魅力。

War krass ... die Welt - und uns in Europa mal anders zu sehen ... so wie zwei junge Menschen aus TAIWAN Europa sehen ... war schon interessant ... aber auch sehr erschreckend ... fand ich ...

This is a vegan restaurant 🍃🍴 owned by a Taiwanese woman. I didn't notice it at first, but when I saw the traditional Taiwanese bags on the wall, I started to think...is the owner of this restaurant Taiwanese? Or do they like Taiwan a lot?

I communicated in English until I asked them at the checkout, "Are you Taiwanese? The chef replied, "My mother is Taiwanese. He speaks Japanese, Mandarin, and some Taiwanese and English.
