My fav algerian recipes
wrote this out for a friend but i figured i'd share here.
The best part about algerian cuisine is its all very common stuff, and easy to make. Garlic, onions, beef, garlic, cumin, tomatoes. That's most of the dishes. The one thing you'll need is harissa, which is sold in more and more supermarkets, and easily available online. You can make your own, but most algerians just get the yellow tube lol.
M'thewem - A chickpea and meatball stew with very little "broth", served with bread you dip and grab with. very filling, freezes and keeps well. You brown lamb neck or shank or whatever is cheapest, and the meatballs are just your average ground beef, but seasoned with Stuff. the video has a diced red onion, but i prefer yellow/white https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V5xgnQRmzg
Tumblr media
"Omlette" - It's actually just spanish tortilla, but we have that. here's a vid, literally all you need is potatoes and eggs, but goes great with bread. One of the best parts of it is again, it's very easy and Incredibly filling, and easily feeds a crowd! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPYk9W9v-bI
Tumblr media
Shakshuka - a pepper, tomato, and harissa dish that's very basil forward. its really good and very different then the recipe all the white youtubers keep doing thats based on the moracan version. this vid is close to what I do, but you can include small pieces of potato and a Lot of basil. You can expedite the process by just cutting up your veg and potato and cooking them down on the frying pan, adding water so they dont burn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJuyS_tyz_M
Tumblr media
Merguez - SO I...dont know if you should make merguez from scratch cause it's expensive. i dont even make it. on top of spices you need harissa, but the price comes in from Needing fatty lamb/mutton and beef. It's unfortunately non negotiable, using anything else is like giving somebody a steakhouse burger recipe and they sub with 99% lean turkey. unfortunately it's my favorite thing on planet earth. serious eats has a recipe thats close to what i think is ideal https://www.seriouseats.com/homemade-merguez-sausage-recipe
Tumblr media
None of the supermarket pre-packed brands do it justice, go to a butcher and hope they have it. I've noticed it's been getting more and more popular, so if you live in a metro area, try and find it.
merguez is like, the greatest thing ever. its great with eggs, it's great with salad, but the best, and most Most Primo Mmm-mm! way to eat merguez is in a hoagie roll with french fries and more harisa as a sandwich. A seasoned salad of diced cucumber, tomato, red onion, and olive oil goes excellent with it.

16 Plant-Based Protein Sources
Protein is often raised as a concern for people considering adopting a plant-based diet, and considering the fact that we've all been taught to associate protein primarily with red meat, this is not surprising.
It is estimated that most adults require 56 grams of protein per day, and you're probably hitting that number if you're not in a calorie deficit. If you're trying to lose weight and so are cutting calories then you may need to track your protein a little more closely, but 56 grams is pretty easy to hit without having to really think about it.
It gets a bit more difficult if you're very physically active, particularly if you're engaged in regular endurance training or are trying to build muscle. There is a great deal of disagreement about precisely how much protein is ideal if you're training intensely, but it is very achievable to hit even the upper end of protein requirement estimates using only plant-based foods. Listed below are particularly good options.
Tumblr media
1) Lentils - Lentils are a cheap nutritional powerhouse, and provides about 17 grams of protein per cup. They're also very flexible, you can have them as your main protein source of a meal, use them to substitute mince in a pasta dish, make burgers out of them, or put them in a stir fry or with rice and veg with some seasonings. They are cheap and convenient if you buy them canned, since they're ready to eat, though I would recommend at least warming them up.
2) Chickpeas - Chickpeas are a popular vegan staple, and it's not hard to see why. At approximately 14.5 grams of protein per cup, they're nutrient dense and very flexible. Use them to make hummus or falafel, as the main protein source of a curry, on their own with rice or worked into a salad. You can also just air fry/grill them with some oil and spices for a convenient, crunchy snack.
3) Oats - A cup of dry oats is around 11 grams of protein by itself. Making it with a cup of oat milk brings that up to 14 grams, throw in a tablespoon of peanut butter and you're up to about 17.5 grams at breakfast, and all those ingredients are pretty cheap and very filling. You could add something like nuts or chia seeds as a topping to stretch that to well over 20 grams.
4) Nuts - Peanuts are 9.5 grams per 1/4 cup, almonds are 7g, pistachios 6g, cashews 5g, hazelnuts 5g, brazil nuts 4.75g, walnuts 4.5g and pine nuts are 4.5g. You can buy 1kg bags of mixed nuts for a little bit cheaper and keep them in a jar for a healthy snack. I find it better to buy a bag that doesn't have peanuts in then add the peanuts later, as mixes that include peanuts tend to be less for your money. Peanut butter is also a cost effective way to add protein to many snacks and meals.
5) Beans - Depending on the type, beans are anything from around 10-15 grams of protein per cup. Some are better than others, like kidney beans, but even your standard baked beans are high protein and good for you. Turn them into a chilli, have them on toast, on a jacket potato, turn them into a bean burger or make them the protein base of a salad or soup. Kidney , soy and edamame beans are particularly good options.
6) Seitan - When cooked, seitan closely resembles to look and feel of red meat. It is made of wheat gluten and has 25 grams of protein per 100 gram serving. It is not very widely available in supermarkets, but try your local Asian market, where it will usually be cheaper as well. It's a bit of a hassle, but you can also make your own at home, which is extremely cheap as it's just wheat gluten, yeast, plant milk, miso and spices.
7) Tofu/Tempeh - A staple in Asian cooking, don't be afraid to try this one. Think of it as doing all the same things chicken does in terms of recipes, it soaks up the flavour around it. It needs to be pressed before use, or you can avoid that by just draining the liquid and freezing it, then thawing over night when you want to use it. 100 grams of tofu (less than half a small block) contains 8 grams of protein. Some tofu, like Naked TooFoo, is pre-pressed for you.
8) Faux Meats - Faux meats are an easy way to add a protein base to your meal, and has the advantage of serving the same function on a plate as the foods you were used to before you went vegan. A Beyond burger, for example, has 19g of protien per patty, though you can get much cheaper options that have a similar nutritional profile. Pair that with a wholemeal bun and something like brown rice/quinoa and vegetables and you can create a very high protein meal.
9) Grains - All grains are good for protein, these include quinoa, spelt, brown/wild rice, teff, amaranth and sorghum. They can range anywhere between 5 and 8 grams per 100 grams, and you'll usually be serving them with some sort of protein source. They're also an excellent source of fibre and carbohydrates, which are also important for training and general health. Quinoa in particular provides all 22 essential amino acids.
10) Peas - Green peas are not mentioned much when it comes to high protein options, but a cup of cooked peas is a respectable 9 grams of protein, and it's worth mentioning here because they tend to be used more as a side than main, so can be paired with other high protein options. They're also very cheap, freeze well and are easy to prepare.
11) Seeds - Just a tablespoon of chia seeds is nearly 3 grams of protein, and the seeds are so small and tasteless that you don't actually notice them in anything you put them in, making them an easy way to add protein to just about any meal. They're pretty cheap to buy in large quantities, particularly good to replace eggs in baking, to add to bread flour, salads and oatmeal. Other high protein seeds include pumpkin, sunflower, linseed, hempseeds and buckwheat.
12) Bread - Bread may not immediately come to mind when you're thinking about protein, but wholegrain/rye/spelt breads can be very high in protein, anywhere from 3 all the way up to around 10 grams per slice, particularly for seeded loaves. If you really want to turn bread into a high protein food, invest in a bread maker or bake it yourself, that way you can add nuts, seeds and oats yourself to up the nutritional value. That's just the bread too, a hummus and falafel sandwich with a high protein bread can be very nutrionally dense.
13) Fruit and veg - Worth mentioning here, as they're something you'll need to consume to maintain a healthy diet anyway, and some options have moderate protein. The higher protein options include broccoli, spinach, asparagus, artichokes, potatoes, sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts, which all contain 4–5 grams of protein per cooked cup. Likewise, blueberries, guava, bananas and nectarines contain about 2-4 grams of protein per cup, as well as many other vitamins important for training.
14) Nutritional Yeast - No vegan list is complete without mentioning it, it's a vegan staple for its nutty, cheesy flavour, as well as being an easy source of vitamin B12. It's a complete protein that has 8 grams of protein per 16 grams serving, making it an easy way to add more protein to things like pizza, pasta dishes or a jacket potato. Use it to make cheesy sauces, or just sprinkle it on anything you'd have previousy added parmesan cheese to.
15) Protein Bars - They tend to be  on the expensive side, but there are a few plant-based options. I'd recommend Misfit bars if you can get them online, they're low sugar, 15g of protein per bar, and you can buy them in variety packs of 40 which works out cheaper. Trek also have protein flapjack bars, less protein (8-9g) but are much cheaper in packs of 3 and frequently available at a discount (as little at 85p for three in Heron here in the UK).
Most brands won’t be suitable as a daily option for many people given the price, but great for when you're need a protein boost on the go. You can also just make your own protein bars using nothing but oats, cinnamon, baking soda, a little maple/golden syrup and a scoop of plant-based protein powder.
16) Protein/Meal Powders- Even the cheaper powders are around 18g of protein per scoop, so a shake is an easy way to add more protein to your diet, or you can stir it into oatmeal to get most of your daily requirements over breakfast. Some meal replacement shakes, like Huel Black, are around 40 grams of protein per serving (2 scoops) even when made with just water, providing a cheap and easy way to have a high protein and nutritious meal without any prep or fuss. Add some peanut butter and plant milk to make them tastier and even higher in protein. (I don't accept sponsorship or commissions from any brand and I don't have any affiliate links. Any product recommendations are based solely on my own experience.)

WEEKLY TAG WEDNESDAY
Thank you to my loves @deedala @darlingian @mybrainismelted! @juliakayyy
About you name: Karen
age: between Noel and Layla
starsign: Leo sun Sagittarius moon
your first language: english
second language: Spanish in the weakest way possible. I wish I would have continued it past high school or had the guts to practice with others. When I was in Mexico and in Spain I could get by, but that's it. I can understand more than I can speak. I guess there's always time to work on it.
favourite lip product: burts bees lip balm
the best food dish you can make without a recipe: any kind of soup or stew. I made a great bean and kielbasa soup that everyone loves. I'm also making cakes from memory these days after making them so often.
If you drink tea, what kind?: earl grey, sometimes chamomile If you drink coffee, what roast do you usually get? The kind I buy is a medium roast but I love any hot coffee, any time of day. favourite thing to watch on youtube right now: I like to watch what my kids call "mom tube" which is stuff like decluttering, house stuff, cooking and food related, money saving stuff... favourite item of clothing right now: I bought four of the same sweater in different colors from Target and I love them all. I typically do things like that - buy the same thing. I like a "uniform" and in my older age I'm getting more and more picky about the way fabric feels.
fandom three movies you recommend: Lady Bird, American Movie, Rushmore
your favourite concert: I saw Patti Smith in like 2004 and she was mesmerizing.
have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?: call me petty, but yes.
have you ever left a fandom because of the fans?: I abandoned the shameless fandom for a while because it felt too overwhelming for me - that was back in 2016 maybe?
the best tv show you watched last year: The Bear
do you have a fancasting you just can't let go of?: I have no idea what this means!
a ship you've abandoned: Willow/Tara on a scale of 1-10 how willing are you to share your ao3 history?: Uh, 8? do you have a fandom tattoo?(do you want one?): I have "sorry I'm late" with an orange heart and a black heart on my forearm. I want another gallavich/shameless tattoo I just have to think about it a while. what fandom do you wish was bigger?: Can there please be a Mary Poppins fandom. I could talk about that movie all day long.
has a finale ever ruined a show for you?: I don't think so!
have you...
swam in an ocean?: yes, begrudgingly. I am terrified of the ocean but I swam in it really shallowly as a teenager. ever been vegan/vegetarian?: yes, also as a teenager. In my 20s I rarely ate meat but when I did I felt like I could lift a car. I would break my pseudo-veg ways for beef only. Steak. A burger. Anything. I love beef. Sorry cows. gone skinny dipping?: yes in my 20s at a campground when I was kind of drunk. Not ideal. I am terrified of the water outside of swimming pools, especially dark water. I think I was trying to be sexy or something?
gone skiing?: yes a lot when I was in middle school
been to a convention?: not yet! Crowds get me overstimulated so not sure if that's in my future. Tagging @heymacy @michellemisfit @francesrose3 @gallawitchxx @rereadanon @skylerwinchester @thisdivorce @howlinchickhowl

delicious vegetarian chili I made last night while crossfaded as fuck with friends, surprisingly turned out absolutely amazing and I had enough presence of mind to write down notes:
Apologies for the lack of specificity in the measurements, this was all done by feel and you're just gonna have to navigate this recipe the same way. Let the cooking spirits guide you
chipotle peppers
4 serrano peppers
2 ancho chiles
2 cans fire roasted diced tomatoes
tomato paste
splash red wine vinegar
3-4 cans beans (black, kidney, pinto)
3 impossible burgers, crumbled (or equivalent amount ground beef for non-veg chili)
handful fresh cilantro
half a lime's juice
fire roasted corn
1.5 green peppers
1 onion
splash olive oil
black pepper
1 bunch celery
mushrooms (optional)
salt
cumin
smoked paprika
oregano
fresh garlic
boil ancho chiles in 2 cups water beforehand, add half the water to chili pot for extra flavor
blend spicy peppers, spices, cilantro together
throw everything in slow cooker and let go for 2 hours, stir every so often
each spice can be added in handful's worth, except for salt, which should be added by half teaspoon and tasted until sufficiently salty

Dungeon Meshi vegan recipe challenge, Chapter 28 (Red Dragon)
Everyone was too busy fighting the dragon & resurrecting our dead healer, so there were no food recipes in chapters 24-27, but now it's time to celebrate with a feast!
I really wanted a steak substitute for the dragon, but the only one I found was by that Meati company & I did not want to chance it, so I just used an Impossible burger which I shaped into a rectangle. I added a spoonful of tomato sauce to the wine mixture to make it a bid redder & thicker.
My dragon tail slice was a portobello mushroom. This seemed like more food than usual, so I've still got half the soup to finish later.
My pizza was a new one for me, Blackbird Supreme Pizza (not GF, unfortunately). It was ok. Crust was nice. Flavor was alright. Could use a bit more sauce, in my opinion.
Tumblr media
Ingredients (1 srv):
-Red Dragon:
1 Impossible patty
1 TBS peach wine, 1 TBS cherry juice, 1 TBS tomato sauce, & 1 tsp red wine vinegar
-Onion Flatbread:
1/3 of Blackbird Supreme pizza
-Dragon Tail Soup:
1 portobello mushroom
onion powder
1 turnip
1 cup no-beef broth + 1/2 cup veg bouillon
salt & pepper

Recipes for Dove (and others, too)
Tumblr media
This is a small selection of recipes that I put together for @dove-da-birb. They are some of the recipes that I and my family use, mainly vegetarian, but also with a few non-vegetarian options. I tend to adapt these a bit when I make them, usually adding more of the seasonings and aromatics, but the recipes are a good basis to build off of.
The recipes are from The Ultimate Vegetarian Cookbook, The Paleo Diabetes Diet Solution, and a couple websites (which I've linked).
Recipe Websites I Often Use
The 1940s Experiment - A website containing a variety of recipes from 1940s Wartime Britain. They can be a little hit-or-miss, but I linked a few of my favourites below. They're definitely rather British in nature, so may or may not appeal. Many of the recipes are wither vegetarian, or have a vegetarian option.
Just One Cookbook - A HUGE collection of Japanese recipes, from mains, to sides, to desserts, to a whole lot of other dishes. There are a lot of recipes that I've enjoyed from here!
Sides and Starches
Tattie Scones (Tippitiwychett) - I LOVE this recipe. It's just a really good starch to have with a meal!
Mock Black Pudding (The 1940s Experiement) - One of the many "mock" foods of the era, this is a fried, seasoned oat patty. It's nice with either veggies and a protein for dinner, or with eggs and tomatoes for a savoury breakfast.
Lemon Garlic Pasta (Pinch and Swirl) - Just a nice, simple pasta recipe. I generally add some spinach towards the end of the cooking process to wilt a little, and it's also really tasty if made (significantly) spicier. Roasting the garlic beforehand also adds another layer of richness to the dish, but it's not necessary.
Mains (Vegetarian)
Mushroom risotto (Recipe Tin Eats) - I posted about this the other day, but it's a really rather nice recipe if you enjoy risotto and/or mushrooms :)
Mock Goose (the 1940s Experiment) - Not goose, but a baked lentil dish! It's surprisingly nice, especially topped with cheese in the last few minutes of baking.
Mock Crab (The 1940s Experiment) - Again, not crab, but a cheesy scrambled egg dish. It's nice on toast as a quick lunch, with some fresh veg as a side. I would definitely recommend using less margarine/butter, as it can get a bit too oily otherwise.
Masoor Dahl (Choosing Chia) - This is an alright basis for this recipe, but I usually add about double the amount of seasoning (if not more). It's a quick recipe, though, so it's nice in that way.
Tofu Katsu Curry (Okonomi Kitchen) - I'm a HUGE fan of curries, especially Japanese curries. This recipe, with breaded tofu cutlets, is a nice recipe, and I often use it. I usually just make triangles, rather than the "cutlet" shape suggested on the website, and I also make "family style" curry (as in this recipe). (Also, Okonomi Kitchen is another website with a lot of good vegetarian/vegan dishes!)
Curried Squash Soup - I don't remember what this exact recipe is like, but you can alter the seasoning to suit your tastes ^w^ (Using frozen, cubed squash is a really good option here!)
Tumblr media
Vegetarian Bolognese - You can use canned beans instead of dried, and though they won't have the bay leaf flavouring, it's a quicker way to make this sauce. I'd also recommend adding some heat, either with pepper flakes, fresh hot peppers, or canned chipotles.
Tumblr media
Roasted Ratatouille - You can of course just use normal diced tomatoes for this. It won't have the same smokiness, but it's still just as good!
Tumblr media
Mains (non-Vegetarian)
Greek-Style Turkey Burgers - My family makes these into meatballs, usually. They also need more seasoning than is called for in the recipe, by quite a bit. (Mint is also a nice addition to these!)
Tumblr media
Baked Haddock with Peppers and Tomatoes - This recipe is more me just putting the concept in this collection, of white fish baked in a chunky tomato sauce. It's always just a nice, simple meal to have, especially with some rice or wild rice.

i saw that you are vegan, i’m vegetarian and i never know what to cook bc i’m not very good, do you have any low c4l recipes that i could try? thx<33
Thank you for the req!! :) I usually only cook dinner and stick to quick meals/snacks the rest of the day but here are my fav recipes!
Some of my fav things to make:
- lettuce wrapped burger (non meat patty)
- tofu stir fry (you can add rice noodles to be more filling - it’s a bit higher cal but i can never finish a portion of it)
- tofu/vegetable curry with cauliflower rice
- tofu/non meat fajitas (can eat w a tortilla or in a lettuce wrap)
- veggie chilli (on its own or w cauli rice)
- veg tacos (can make with veg mince - very versatile, you can skip/swap anything which makes it super easy to keep low cal)
i use a lot of non-meat alternatives esp since they’re usually low cal where i live :)
msg me if you want recipe details of what exactly I used/precise macros 🫶

Look for hidden veggies recipes. There's multiple vegan cheese recipes that are completely made out of vegetables and it still tastes like cheese. Branch out of US food recipes as well(if youre in the US), a lot of other countries do a lot better with making both fruits and esp vegetables taste better. Soups, dumplings, veggie burgers, pasta made out of veggies, and using dips and sauces are a good way as well. If you need veg to be easier to chop up, you can buy pre chopped, use a food processor, or get a manual vegetable chopper. Ninja blender is fantastic for making soups and pureeing vegetables.
i mean this in the gentlest way possible: you need to eat vegetables. you need to become comfortable with doing so. i do not care if you are a picky eater because of autism (hi, i used to be this person!), you need to find at least some vegetables you can eat. find a different way to prepare them. chances are you would like a vegetable you hate if you prepared it in a stew or roasted it with seasoning or included it as an ingredient in a recipe. just. please start eating better. potatoes and corn are not sufficient vegetables for a healthy diet.

Even as someone who REALLY likes (and needs protein in meat form) meat, I wanna eat more veg, and you'd THINK vegan recipes would be perfect for that. I want more like described above!! But anytime I try to find a vegan recipe to get that, I get "veg burger! nuggets! are you a coward who thinks it'll taste SO GOOD???" and... buddy my autistic ass can tell texture wise, so. Jot that down. I want variety! I want flavor! I don't want "fake meat" I want REAL VEGETABLES!
As an omnivore who likes vegan and vegetarian cooking I think the mistake a lot of people make when trying to convince meat eaters to go plant based is trying to convince them that something you’ve got will replace meat for them.
I like vegan nuggets and real chicken nuggets for different reasons. They taste different. They only taste identical to you because you haven’t eaten meat for five years.
When cooking for myself I only eat meat maybe like three times a week because vegetarian cooking is often cheaper and it tastes good.
Like just give people the actual recipes you use that aren’t pasta. Every time you ask what to eat on a meatless day people are like. Pasta. I don’t want pasta every day.
Point out the foods people already eat that are vegetarian. Like sweet potato fries, veggie chow mein, grilled mushrooms, mashed potatoes, black bean enchiladas, peanut butter sandwiches. Tell people what you microwave when you’re drunk at 3am. Show people that vegetables are so good they’ll want them in their diet.
Also some people are just never gonna go vegan. They’re just not. I’m certainly not, and I love vegan food. But since I’ve fallen in love with vegetarian cooking I eat meat much less and I’m much more careful about picking the meat I do eat. Doesn’t that align with a lot of your goals?
Impossible burger doesn’t taste like meat. But you know what tastes really good? A mushroom fajita taco. Falafel. Potato pancakes with applesauce. Smoky vegan collared greens. Hot potato salad with herbs. Palak paneer with rice. Tofu Pad Thai with extra peanuts. Some of my favorite foods of all time, and I’m a dirty rotten meat eater. Use THAT to get your foot in the door. And be more accepting of some half-assed victories. I’m on your side for the most part, believe it or not. But stop trying to claim certain things are just like meat. You and I both know you don’t plan most of your weeknight dinners around meat substitutes.
