Hi, Kirri! I'm from South America and I'm trying to do a research about australian high school. I would like you to clarify some questions I have about school subjects, like: which ones are optional and which are mandatory? also, if you could send me some reliable websites than i can look up. every website i see says something different, can be very confusing so I decided to ask a australian person. Thank you!!!!
Hi, hey, i've been summoned! Okay, i'll admit to you upfront, it's been a hot minute since I was in high school so my knowledge is partly from personal experience but also what is published online. The school structures and curriculum differs from state to state, so it's no wonder you had trouble finding clear answers. I'll try to explain simply:
Australian high schools run from years 7 to 12. (We actually have 13 school years in total including Kindergarten, or preparatory, which is not numbered.) Students can finish in year 10 if they choose not to complete their senior years and test for university entry. If a student finishes in year 10, they get a Record of School Achievement; if they finish senior studies, they get a certificate of education depending on which state they're in:
NSW - Higher School Certificate (HSC)
VIC - Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)/Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
QLD - Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA)
SA - South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)
WA - West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)
TAS - Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
ACT - Australian Capital Territory Senior Secondary Certificate (ACT SSC)
NT - Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE)
The national curriculum has eight compulsory learning areas, which can be categorized into subjects:
Tumblr media
Then there are a wide range of electives, which vary greatly depending on region, type of school (state-funded vs private/faith-based) etc. Students in years 9 and 10 typically choose three electives. Here is an example of electives available to a school in NSW.
In addition, many schools offer the opportunity to study a vocational (often trade-based) course in preparation for studies after high school, called TVET (TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training). Many of these course results in credits toward school outcomes. I guess you could say that TAFE to Australia is like community college to the US.
The school year is broken up into four 'terms', with dates varying between states (see links at end for a list). A typical school day goes from 8:45am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday, with breaks for recess and lunch between period. A 'period' = one class, which typically runs for 40 minutes.
Upon completing senior studies and final exams, students are given an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), which they can use to select and be admitted to university. In fact, senior exams have just begun so it's a good time to keep an eye on social media and see how current students are talking about the experience! 'ATAR Day' (when rankings are released) is on December 14, another time to take a look.
Australia also has specialist high schools, such as creative and performing arts schools, intensive English centres (for students with English as a second language), sports schools, and technology schools. All of these must teach the compulsory subjects, but offer the chance to specialize in these areas.
Websites where you can learn more about the Australian curriculum:
Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 Australian Schools Directory
Study Australia
ACARA (for statistics)
TVET
ATAR
Hopefully that will help you! I hope you don't mind that I posted this answer but I thought it might be useful to others as well. If you have any other questions, go ahead and ask and i'll do my best!

hey!! read somewhere you're doing VCE- same! how's that for you? what subjects are you taking and how's the load?? idk I'm looking for cool people to rant about aussie school with :))))
well im not actually doing VCE yet, im just taking accelerated VCE for digitech (applied computing in VCE). i am also doing advanced math, and considering i went from an incredibly laid back school, the transition has been... well, certainly a challenge, considering that i have homework now and dont like it.
for subjects, im doing english (mandatory and i hate it), advanced math and applied computing all year. im also doing chemistry and business management this semester, and media and physics next semester

This AI image generated from the prompt "Michael Myers holding a gun" is posed almost exactly like the stock image I used for my Year 12 Media Studies podcast I chose to do on gun safety that was supposed to constitute for 40% of my overall grade a project which although I recorded one day with a couple of American friends over a discord voice call after school in my car through use of the local library's public Wi-Fi because the network we had at home was complete and utter dogshit I never ended up editing or handing in because even though I took VCE media studies for three years I never learned how to edit using Final Cut Pro due to an embarrassing mix of neurodivergency bullshit and self-confidence issues that ultimately resulted in me dropping out of high school in the week before final exams. Anyway yes I am currently unemployed right now because the last job I had at the last nursery I was at just ran out of seasonal work and decided my body shape isn't the right kind for the labor they do (I am transgender) and got rid of me first over anyone else even though when I drive by the street the nursery is on I still see the farm worker wanted please enquire within sign out front that I used to get the job in the first place why do you ask

Entry 1: About Me page
Entry 1: About Me page including: a brief on your background, sport interests, work experiences and career ambitions. In addition: a reflection on your study performance to date and areas to improve; expectations and aspirations for this subject and your internship.
My name is Jack McDornan, I am 21 years old and currently living in Wantrina south. I have a family of 5 which includes two siblings, my sisters Meg and Abby with me being the middle child, currently living with my mum.
Growing up I always had a love for sport with some of my earliest memories are attending the AFL or watching it on TV. Being a passionate Brisbane Lions fan has taught me resilience, but it has always been able to give me joy through the darkest moments. I started my schooling journey at Laburnum Primary School in Blackburn and was quick to realise school wasn't for me and often found myself relating my schooling towards the footy, which was often turned down by my teachers.
Tumblr media
As I got older I continued to lean towards sports rather than my schooling finding love in other sports such as cricket, basketball and now the UFC, this led me to struggle with schooling in my higher education at Vermont Secondary college where I was quick to fall behind which led to me moving to a more hands on education at SEDA college which I found the type of learning for me. Combining my love for sports and school was exactly what I needed. With help from my year 12 teacher Josh Newman i finally found love for schooling.
After finishing year 12 I was unable to enroll into the course i wanted to due to not doing VCE which was the bachelor of sports media, so I decided to take on a diploma of sport and business at the Collingwood football club which was the inaugural year of the course.
Throughout this diploma I was lucky enough to Volunteering at the Collingwood, which led me to have a lot of industry access. After receiving my diploma i was able to enroll in Holmesglens bachelor of sport media, which at the start I found quite difficult due to my lack of doing essays and meeting deadlines due to my more hands-on study at SEDA. But with hard work I was able to get the hang of it. Something I'm looking forward to is the internship due to the fact I'm more of a hands-on learner, with the aspirations to do something in the space of sports media organisation content creation or social media.

Entry 1 - About Me
Words: 498
My name is Archie Roberts, I am twenty years old and live on the Mornington Peninsula. I am currently in my third year of studying sports business at Holmesglen. I completed my high school at Mornington Secondary College and received my VCE certificate. The three sports I follow closely are Australian rules football, basketball and cricket. I used to play football and cricket, but now just play basketball Monday nights in a domestic team. I would absolutely love to work in any of those sports, particularly footy. I also take my health and fitness quite seriously. I run 3-4 times a week and workout every day, track me protein intake, steps and calories eaten. So also working within that space would be appealing to me. In terms of work experience, in high school I did my year ten experience in construction and building but didn’t enjoy it. I work part-time at a pizza store in my local area three nights a week, but that is purely for money purposes. It helps with communication, organisation, teamwork and many other skills. Late last year and early in 2024, I assisted Brad Sykes Sports Consulting a few times. A full seven-hour day running a school holiday clinic with kids aged six to twelve in Bonbeach, and a couple separate running sessions with junior footballers. Both were great experience for me and showed me that work like that is something I would want to do. I do think I enjoy working with children in sport. Although can be frustrating at times, I like seeing them grow and evolve into young men and women. I wish to complete my 228-hour internship with the same organisation. Creating a portfolio is a greatly beneficial element of self-reflection (Chong, 2017).
In terms of career ambitions I have always been interested in sport. In high school my two preferred subjects were physical education and business management. So it was logical decision to combine them for university. I very enjoy every aspect of sports, that being analytics, data, journalism, media and everything in between. The subjects I have studied here during my course I believe have placed me very well for the future, because of how relevant they are. I expect to learn a fair bit from this subject, how to be professional in the workplace, and gain valuable skills for my future careers. I have many areas to improve on moving forward, such as communicating, being initiative and asking questions. I think at the conclusion of this intensive subject, I will have developed amazing skills to greatly assist me with my career moving forward out of uni. Up to this point, I am impressed and pleased with my studies. My results have been good, and I’ve been learning so much. Expectations for this subject are simply to learn how to be professional and become more comfortable in workplace settings. For my internship, I expect to learn a bundle of things, and gain amazing experience in my respective workplace.

Entry 1:
I am a 3rd year sport business student who is looking forward to making a mark in the sporting industry. I was originally born in the UK where I was not exposed to a wide range of sports, this was mainly due to massive popularity of soccer in the UK. I moved to Australia in 2007 and it wasn’t until the age of 14 where I started playing sports. I started off playing basketball in 2014 for my local club. I also participated in footy but that was cut short due to injuring myself in my first game.
Ever since moving to Australia have created a big passion for sports and I am fully committed to working in the sporting industry. My dream is to work for a NBA club over in America. I have some experiences within the sporting world I have done some event organisation with my local rugby club, and I have also gained experience in looking after their social media to help the club receive new players and volunteers. I have also had experience in coaching and developing the younger generation, in 2020 I started coaching for my local basketball club where I really fell in love of the idea of coaching and helping a team reach their goals.
As far of study performances go, I truly believe that I have significantly improved across most areas from when I first started university compared to now. Throughout high school I was never a big studying person even though completing my final year of VCE throughout Covid I managed to perceiver. Although Holmesglen institute allowed me to develop my skills and even learn new skills to help me complete tasks before deadlines, Holmesglen have also helped me develop organisational skills. From self-assessments I believe that I need to improve more on my time management and organisational skills although I believe that I can improve on these skills before 2023 ends.
My expectation for this class is to gain the skills that I need to write a resume that stands out and how to be more market myself more, I also I want to gain the skills to go inti job interviews with confidence and answer the questions with confidence to nail an interview.
