Athena

Doesn't like nicknames, which makes her siblings use them all the more, particularly when they're younger.

Ath (on occasion, by Artemis, Apollo, or Hephaestus), Thena (that one kinda sticks after God Games), Attie (by Ares when he was a kid without self-preservation instinct, now sometimes by Hermes who has a deathwish), Thea (by Ody and Fam)

Hephaestus

Doesn't mind, doesn't care.

Heph (by everyone, even Athena surprisingly), Phaestus (rarer but it happens), Hephie (by Hermes, naturally)

Aphrodite

Actually loves nicknames, but loves terms of endearment even more. Ares hasn't used her name to her face in centuries, if he didn't call her my love, my darling, or my little dove, she would literally cry bc she would think he was breaking up with her.

Dite (The casual one most of her siblings use), Aph (Apollo, serious), Dovie (Somebody please contain Hermes)

Ares

His name has two syllables. One might argue for ARES (Athena, annoyed). Otherwise just endearment from Aphrodite, and descriptors like The Angry One. Please be nicer to Ares everyone he deserves better.

Artemis

Doesn't mind nicknames per se, but is particular about which ones.

Artie is out of the question (not even Hermes, Artemis is a ranged fighter), Temi or Ari is fine (Apollo, her girls, and on occasion some of the others)

Apollo

Is genuinely sad that Pollo is the only variant of his name that's halfway reasonable. Yes, people call him "Sunshine" (Okay, Hermes does, and his bf/gf do too), Pollo... honestly most of the siblings have used it but it doesn't really stick.

Hermes

Literally nobody shortens his name, but I guarantee every god and goddess has called him "little shit" at least once.

Dionysus

Honestly if the drugs kick in he answers to no variant of his name lol. It's Dio, by pretty much everyone, always (apart from Athena pre-God Games who stubbornly uses his full name)

Writing Notes: Mermaids & Sirens

Mermaid - a fabled marine creature with the head and upper body of a human being and the tail of a fish.

Siren - (in Greek mythology) a creature half bird and half woman who lured sailors to destruction by the sweetness of her song.

MERMAIDS

Similar divine or semidivine beings appear in ancient mythologies (e.g., the Chaldean sea god Ea, or Oannes).

In European folklore, mermaids (sometimes called sirens) and mermen were natural beings who, like fairies, had magical and prophetic powers. They loved music and often sang. Though very long-lived, they were mortal and had no souls.

Many folktales record marriages between mermaids (who might assume human form) and men. In most, the man steals the mermaid’s cap or belt, her comb or mirror. While the objects are hidden she lives with him; if she finds them she returns at once to the sea.

In some variants the marriage lasts while certain agreed-upon conditions are fulfilled, and it ends when the conditions are broken.

Though sometimes kindly, mermaids and mermen were usually dangerous to man.

Their gifts brought misfortune, and, if offended, the beings caused floods or other disasters.

To see one on a voyage was an omen of shipwreck.

They sometimes lured mortals to death by drowning, as did the Lorelei of the Rhine, or enticed young people to live with them underwater, as did the mermaid whose image is carved on a bench in the church of Zennor, Cornwall, England.

Aquatic mammals, such as the dugong and manatee, that suckle their young in human fashion above water are considered by some to underlie these legends.

SIRENS

According to Homer, there were two Sirens on an island in the western sea between Aeaea and the rocks of Scylla.

Later the number was usually increased to three, and they were located on the west coast of Italy, near Naples.

They were variously said to be the daughters of the sea god Phorcys or of the river god Achelous by one of the Muses.

In Homer’s Odyssey, Book XII, the Greek hero Odysseus, advised by the sorceress Circe, escaped the danger of their song by stopping the ears of his crew with wax so that they were deaf to the Sirens.

Odysseus himself wanted to hear their song but had himself tied to the mast so that he would not be able to steer the ship off its course.

Apollonius of Rhodes, in Argonautica, Book IV, relates that when the Argonauts sailed that way, Orpheus sang so divinely that only one of the Argonauts heard the Sirens’ song.

According to Argonautica, Butes alone was compelled by the Sirens’ voices to jump into the water, but his life was saved by the goddess Cypris, a cult name for Aphrodite.

In Hyginus’s Fabulae, no. 141, a mortal’s ability to resist them causes the Sirens to commit suicide.

Ovid (Metamorphoses, Book V) wrote that the Sirens were human companions of Persephone.

After she was carried off by Hades, they sought her everywhere and finally prayed for wings to fly across the sea. The gods granted their prayer.

In some versions Demeter turned them into birds to punish them for not guarding Persephone.

In art, the Sirens appeared first as birds with the heads of women and later as women, sometimes winged, with bird legs.

The Sirens seem to have evolved from an ancient tale of the perils of early exploration combined with an Asian image of a bird-woman. Anthropologists explain the Asian image as a soul-bird—i.e., a winged ghost that stole the living to share its fate. In that respect the Sirens had affinities with the Harpies.

Some Character Tropes

Alchemic Elementals. Merfolk and similar beings are sometimes portrayed as water elementals.

Bathtub Mermaid. Merfolk and other aquatic creatures kept in stationary tanks and other containers.

Inhumanly Beautiful Race. Merfolk, mermaids in particular, are often very beautiful beyond human standards.

Mermaid in a Wheelchair. Mermaids on land often use wheelchairs to get around.

Mobile Fishbowl. Merfolk who can't breathe air bring water with them to interact with land-dwellers.

Mute Mermaid. A mermaid who is unable to speak.

Selkies and Wereseals. Human-seal shapeshifters.

Sirens Are Mermaids. The Sirens of mythology portrayed as mermaids.

Unscaled Merfolk. Merfolk that are aren't scaled fish below the waist.

A beautifully decorated tree with lights that shine brighter than Helios’ mighty rays. It’s almost like they’re celebrating the birthday of Dionysus. I mean- they MIGHT be. But I don’t think any of them would say yes. 

Around the tree and the hall for that matter are people. Gods and goddesses, creatures beyond man’s wildest imaginations, even mortal people! Everyone in Christmas regalia in some variant. Whether it be like Aphrodite and Amphitrite, sipping Ambrosia in very Christmas distinct outfits, or Poseidon in a …..interesting sea themed christmas sweater. Sorry. UGLY Christmas sweater. 

With the welcoming and happy environment, gifts collect under the ‘Christmas’ Olive tree. It’s a beautiful but rather silly event.

i got so many things for her lately. some fresh roses, honey, stuff to put on her altar, stickers with shells, to put everywhere and think about her all the time!

i feel like she's the goddess that's been reaching out to me since i was a kid. even since I can remember, I've always loved love. whether it came in romcoms, stories, books, songs, other people, I love love. valentine's day is my favorite holiday since forever, whenever someone offers to get me something, the first thing I always ask is "does it come in pink?" (my family doesn't even ask anymore, they already know to get it in pink), I've always been calling my aesthetic as love core, because if something is pink, red, heart shaped, or glittery, why would I get it in another variant? my whole highschool knew me as the one with heart shaped sunglasses on her head at all times!

so here I am now, a Lady Aphrodite devotee, wearing a sweater with heart print, with heart shaped earrings in my ears. The roses I got her are in a heart shaped vase, next to the glittery, pink bowl with rose quartz and shells inside.

There was a time that I thought it was something bad. Come on, that's so childish. But no, it's fine. Because Lady Aphrodite is teaching me that I can be obsessed with love. Love is such a great phenomenon that it is worth to obsessing about, and I'd like to thank her, for taking me out of this dark place, when just for a second I thought that I should change this about me. Be shut off, love is a weakness, because all that love has brought me, was violence, but no. I won't let ugly things make me ugly. I won't let hard things change me into a person I'm not. I love love, and I'll always love it.

And now, when I'm finally getting colour back into my face, I couldn't be more grateful to have her on my journey. As I'm crawling back to what have always felt like home to me - love. Because it's not something to be ashamed of anymore, and I've never felt better about being the way I am, than now. With Lady Aphrodite on my side.

hc powers of the seven: blessing edition

not all of the seven are included here because I don't think all of the seven have gotten blessings

firstly, i think blessings are lasting.

is this entirely canon? not really. but frank's blessing physically altered him, so it's pretty possible. now to the actual hcs:

jason: blessing of lupa. he's got very sharp teeth and a strong bite. enhanced senses, other than sight, so he's pretty sensitive to noise. i also doubt that the wolves provided him with cooked food, so he's pretty much got an iron stomach and can eat raw meat. thats what he did with the wolves. however!! this power has drawbacks. he's more likely to be hurt by loud sounds, and his sensitivity means that, while he's a great fighter, you can stun him if you're too loud, though he gets back up after. blessings are also curses. he looks at it fairly, noting both the good and bad effects of it. the noise sensitivity also gives opportunities for him fearing his own lighting and thunder.

frank: blessing of mars. we know this one. what could i possibly change—give him fear manipulation. his very aura can cause anxiety and maybe even paranoia in new people. he hates it. so much. it makes him physically taller and stronger, but it scares the new campers and makes them nervous. he considers it more of a curse than a blessing.

piper: blessing of aphrodite. yes, this happened in canon at her claiming. all I'm editing is saying she got enhanced charmspeak powers from it *cough* and the ability to breathe underwater *cough* i mean what sea goddess aphrodite who? doesn't notice it until shrimpzilla. considers it a blessing. although she hates her mom and probably wishes someone else gave it to her. it's fine she can still be one with the fish.

leo: blessing of juno. yes, the roman variant. yes, juno. she is his patron as much as jason and piper's. minor premonition with sudden sickness, nausea, or visions before a bad event. does this suck ass for him? yes. does this also help the others because it's a bright, neon red warning flag? also yes. he thinks it's shitty but wouldn't get rid of it. this is because juno was believed to protect the roman city and warn the citizens before an attack or destructive event. he also gets slight power boosts during june.

nico: blessing of apollo but specifically after the trials of apollo when he sarcastically asks if he has the blessing of will's father to date him. and apollo takes it literally and gives it to him. "that's not what i meant, dipshit—" and it's far too late for that so now he has enhanced hearing and he's pitch perfect and he'll never use this again. ever. but hey it also gives him sunburn immunity so??? no, he's not a member of the seven, but not all of them have blessings so shh it's fine i can put him in this list.

Discussions and works based on Greek myth are often so rigid about which gods should or shouldn't belong to the dodekatheon, given the variations that existed in Antiquity. It looks as if the only debatable place is that of Hestia or Dionysos, but the idea of the six altars at Olympia and the altar of the six goddesses at Pherai indicate that Aphrodite, Demeter, Artemis or Hera could also be absent from the Twelve, not just Hestia. Dionysos could be excluded, but so could Ares and Hephaistos. It is also misleading when people speak of the gods as the "twelve Olympians" with the implication that "Olympians" are necessarily a select group of only 12 gods (when for instance Herakles also could be worshipped as one of the Olympians as attested in Herodotos, Histories 2.44 and the Muses are called Olympian by Hesiod), or that the twelve must necessarily live on Olympos. It's the 12 gods, not the 12 Olympians.

I feel like, when it comes to discussing the virgin goddesses and if they were aroace or any other sexuality, it's important to know ancient Greece 1. Didn't have the same idea of sexuality as we do now 2. Didn't consider non-penetrative sex as sex 3. Romantic relationships without men weren't really something they thought worth discussing or talking about.

There's a reason there's a variant of the Orion myth where Artemis/Diana fell for him, their maidenhood and resistance to Aphrodite and Eros is less of a "I feel this way" thing and more of a statement.

Again, I'm back to reading Heidi Anne Heiner's Sleeping Beauties: Sleeping Beauty and Snow White Tales From Around the World.

The next set of tales in this book are the Snow White variants from Greece, Albania, and Turkey.

*First we have three variants from Greece: Marietta and the Witch, Her Stepmother (which Heiner also included in Cinderella Tales From Around the World as a partial Cinderella tale), Maroula and the Mother of Erotas (which is a cross between Snow White and The Girl Without Hands), and Rodia.

**In Marietta, the heroine's nemesis is her stepmother. In Maroula, the antagonist is Aphrodite, euphemistically called "the mother of Erotas," who becomes jealous of Maroula's beauty. And in Rodia, the antagonists are the heroine's two older sisters.

**Maroula and Rodia are princesses, but Marietta is a commoner.

**In all three of these tales, in place of the magic mirror is the sun. Since the sun sees everything, the villainess(es) ask(s) him if he's seen any woman more beautiful than she is (or they are). Of course the sun names the heroine and reveals her whereabouts.

**Marietta is abandoned by her father at her stepmother's demand, and then is taken in by forty friendly giants, who live in a castle. Rodia is abandoned by her sisters and found by the goddess Nycteris, who takes her to her palace and adopts her as a daughter. Maroula, however, omits the motif of "abandoned heroine finds a new home": Maroula is just an orphaned princess living with her brothers, who leave her alone in the palace every day, and Aphrodite goes straight to trying to poison her.

**Each story includes two poisoning attempts, one failed, and one successful: the failed attempts are with a ring, an apple, and a scarf, respectively, while the successful poisonings are with a grape, a ring, and a sweetmeat.

**Marietta and Maroula are laid in golden coffins left outdoors, while Rodia is laid in a silver coffin placed on the back of a horse, which is then released into the world. All three are discovered by princes: Maroula's prince removes her poisoned ring straight away and revives her, while in both Marietta and Rodia's case, the prince takes the "dead" girl home and pines over her, until one day, one of his parents, the king or the queen, lifts the girl and unwittingly shakes the poisoned food from her throat.

**All three stories continue after the heroine's marriage and after she gives birth to a child or twins, much in the vein of Brother and Sister, The Six Swans, or some Cinderella stories. Marietta's wicked stepmother and one of Rodia's wicked sisters uses magic to turn the heroine into a bird, then takes her place in disguise. But the bird won't leave the palace (in Marietta, as in several Cinderella variants like The Story of Tam and Cam, the stepmother repeatedly kills it, but it comes back in different forms), and in the end, of course, the prince breaks the spell. In Maroula, the prince has a wicked mother, whom Aphrodite influences to murder Maroula's twins and frame Maroula for it. As punishment, the prince has Maroula's hands cut off, and then banishes her. But an angel in the guise of a monk finds her resurrects her children, restores her hands, and gives them a palace to live in. Eventually the prince finds them and the truth is revealed.

**Marietta's stepmother is imprisoned in the end. Maroula's wicked mother-in-law is executed, while Aphrodite decides Maroula has suffered enough and leaves her alone. Rodia's sisters die of jealousy.

*The next two tales come from Albania: Marigo of the Forty Dragons and Fatimé.

**Marigo is a princess, while Fatimé is a commoner.

**As in the Greek tales, the sun takes the place of the magic mirror.

**Like the Greek Marietta and some international Cinderellas, Marigo is persuaded by her teacher to cause an "accident" that kills her mother, and then to convince her father to marry the teacher. Once the teacher becomes queen, she also becomes a wicked stepmother and the story's villainess. She orders her henpecked husband the king to kill Marigo, but he can't bring himself to kill his daughter and just abandons her instead.

**Meanwhile, Fatimé is persecuted by her two older sisters, who trick her into getting lost in the forest.

**Marigo is taken in by forty dragons who live in a castle. Fatimé is taken in by forty thieves, who each want to marry her, but who finally marry her off to the young man who cooks for them, who was the first to befriend her and fall in love with her. This marriage is apparently treated as null and void once Fatimé "dies," however, because she still marries a young king in the end.

**When Marigo's stepmother discovers her survival, she sends the king in disguise as a merchant to poison his daughter, first unsuccessfully with a hairpin, then successfully with a ring. Fatimé's sisters send a maidservant to poison her, first in two failed attempts with a necklace and a mesh of sequins for her gown, but then successfully, also with a ring.

**The dragons place Marigo in an ornate beaded coffin, which they hang by silver chains from a tree over a fountain. The thieves place Fatimé in a simple coffin, which they leave in a tree over a pond. In both tales, a young king comes to the water to give his horse a drink, and the horse is frightened by the coffin.

**Both kings take the "dead" heroine home with them, where they secretly adore her. In Marigo, the queen mother eventually discovers the coffin and orders the girl's body burned, but a servant spots the ring and removes it, reviving her. In Fatimé, from lying so long in her deathlike trance with nothing to eat, Fatimé eventually loses weight, and the ring falls off her finger by itself.

**Neither Marigo's stepmother nor Fatimé's sisters are punished – they're just never mentioned again after she revives.

*Next come three tales from Turkey: one called The Magic Needle, and two other unnamed tales.

**In The Magic Needle, the heroine, Nartanesi, is the daughter of a padishah (sultan), and her nemesis is her own mother, the sultana. A mystical Arab slave takes the place of the magic mirror, and after Nartanesi is abandoned by her mother in the forest, three hunters take her in. With the help of a witch, the sultana poisons her by sticking two magic needles into her head. The grieving hunters place her in a gold coffin, which they hang between two trees, where it's discovered by a prince named Schezade, who of course falls in love with Nartanesi, takes her home, and hides her away. Unfortunately, Schezade is already betrothed, and it's his fiancée who eventually discovers Nartanesi. She removes just one of the two needles from her head, and because the other is still there, instead of simply reviving, Nartanesi turns into a bird. From there the story follows the same pattern as Marietta... and certain Cinderella stories, where again and again the heroine takes a new form, is destroyed by the jealous bride, but comes back again, until finally the second needle is removed and she reverts to human form. Meanwhile, the wicked sultana learns that her daughter is still alive and comes to Schezade's palace in disguise to kill her, but this time Nartanesi recognizes her. Schezade has both the sultana and his fiancée hanged by their own long hair, then happily weds Nartanesi.

**As for the two unnamed tales, one is mostly identical to the Grimms' tale except with just "seven men" in place of seven dwarfs. It must have been a loose translation of the Grimms' version. The other is a cross between Snow White and tales like The Six Swans or The Seven Ravens: the heroine has seven older brothers who go into exile at her birth, then sets out to find them when she grows up and learns of their existence. Once she does find them, they all live happily together, until one day she steps on a sharp bone and falls into a deathlike trance (no explanation is given), but revives when the bone is discovered and removed from her foot.

***That last story makes me realize how easily and effectively Snow White could be combined with tales like The Six Swans. Those two archetypes could be combined even more thoroughly than this little story fragment does. After all, in many Six Swans-type tales, the brothers are turned to birds by day and then driven away by a wicked stepmother: that stepmother could easily be jealous of the sister's beauty too and try to kill her. Then the story could continue as Snow White, with the enchanted bird brothers in place of the dwarfs, until the very end, when they would be restored to full-time human form by the stepmother's death.

I kinda wish Camp Jupiter had a different concept than Camp Halfblood instead of being another Demigod camp.

Romulus and Remus are the only Demigods exclusive to Roman Mythology that don't have Greek variants. Besides them, Roman Demigods were non-existent (and yes I count Aeneas as Greek because he was the son of Aphrodite in the Iliad before he was the son of Venus in the Aeneid).

In fact, Mars and Mercury are the only Olympian gods with pure Roman offspring that don't exist in Greek Mythology at all (although Mercury's twin sons, the Lares, are minor gods instead of Demigods)

Jupiter didn't cheat on Juno with mortals like Zeus did (expect with Semele/Alcmene to produce Bacchus/Hercules I guess but they're still treated as Greek without even getting a Roman names). The only affair he had that was exclusive to Roman myth is with the Roman Goddess Jaturna, but it didn't produce any offspring.

The Titans (especially the 2nd gen ones) were more likely to have Demigod offspring than the Roman Gods.

Rick should've given us Camp Othrys because if you know anything about Hyperion's three children, they were big humanfuckers (but of course Rick had to kill off Helios and Selene booooo👎!).

Miguel never really saw or thought of himself getting close to anyone. It's canon that every time a spider person gets close to someone, they get put them in an immense amount of danger. That's the sole main reason why he never wanted to get close to someone. Until he met her.

"You know Miguel, you're so negative. Why can't you have fun for once?" Y/N asked.

Miguel just ignored her snarky comment. He always said he didn't have time for stupidities and that he had too much work, he couldn't be distracted. There are some moments that people would think he was absent from the building because he's always locked in doing his multiverse work. and this was one of the times people thought he was away.

"Hey, come on. You need a break. You look like you haven't slept in day-"

"That's because I haven't." Miguel interrupted Y/N in an angry annoyed tone.

Y/N just looked at him and furrowed her eyebrows, " Ay, pero no te 'nojes. I'm just suggesting what's best for your health."

"I don't have time for your dumbass comments, Y/N. If you don't have anything useful to say, then don't say anything at all." Miguel replied and continued looking at different scenes from different dimensions.

Y/N just stayed quiet and sulked in the chair she had set next to Miguel. She hated when Miguel would get mad at her, especially if it was her fault. But oh how she loved how hot he looked. Her stomach would twist in guilt at him yelling at her, but she couldn't deny that she would get a little aroused.

A few minutes went by of pure silence. The only noise being made was the noises Miguel's devices were making. Y/N looked up at Miguel and smiled.

"You know, down on the West Coast, we have this saying... How did it go again? Shit, era como 'Late afternoon on the West Coast ends with the sky doing all its brilliant stuff.' " Y/N said. She missed her home in the West Coast. She missed the beautiful beaches and sunny skies. Miguel just looked at her and smirked just a tiny bit. He had forgotten she was pulled from the West Coast. He pulled a chair behind him and sat down to face her. "The West Coast, huh? Escuché que es muy bonito ahí."

Y/N's eyes went wide at him saying that. "Nunca has ido al West Coast?!"

Miguel only shook his head.

The two sat and talked to each other for quite a while to the point where they ignored anyone who tried calling them form their little watch devices. It was strange. Having a full civil conversation with Miguel without him insulting her or getting mad at her was very peaceful to say the least.

The tall male couldn’t deny that he enjoyed his conversation with Y/N. He always admired how courageous she was on her earth. For the love of Aphrodite, her hero name is inspired by the goddess of war and wisdom herself, Athena!

After the two stopped talking, they just looked at each other. Y/N’s eyes gleaming, attracting Miguel.

“Don’t look at me like that.” He whispered.

"Like what?" she innocently said to him.

Miguel stood up from his chair and got closer to the girl. He grabbed her jaw and leaned in, analyzing her face. She was a pretty girl, no doubt. He saw how some of the spider-people would stutter when speaking to her or how they would find anything to compliment her, whether it was her pretty eyes, funny jokes, or elegant fighting skills.
