I respectfully disagree. Your argument is that Varian/Hugo is an age gap ship because of the ages they were originally created as. You also argue that shipping them is no different to Varian/Cass or Varian/Eugene. I believe this is wrong because of two things: 1. There’s a difference between a character being “aged up” and a character just being older because a story takes place later in their life.
2. There is a difference between characters who are established canon in the SAME STORY, and characters who are fodder for new in progress creations.
So for number one. Characters are fictional and therefore not real, but as most of them are meant to be human or creatures who age like humans do they get older. There’s nothing weird about deciding to write a story about a character a few years later from their original story. If anything, it’s natural to want to write about what happens next in their life. Just because a character is introduced at a certain age doesn’t mean a writer can’t then jump forward in time. It also doesn’t mean that that character can’t ever be romanced or put in more mature situations. If that were the case than there would be a huge problem with Tiana, Elsa, Anna, and Rapunzel who all make their first appearances in their respective canons as babies or children but then are given a skip forward in time. Most of them are also then given a romantic love interest. People age. And so can characters. In fact, this isn’t even the issue with Varian being shipped with any of the Tangled trio. If Varian had met them when he was 30, the age gap wouldn’t be so terrible. Adult date and marry people much older then them and often have healthy relationships. Instead, the issue with these ships is that in ESTABLISHED PUBLISHED canon they meet him when he’s 14. No one should be dating anyone they met as a teen if they were already an adult. (Rapunzel and Eugene really toe the line here, but im giving them a pass because Raps was closer to 18 then 17 when she met Eugene and it’s not like there’s some sort of magical transformation that takes place at the stroke of midnight on someone’s 18th birthday) Even if we fast forward to when Varian is 20 or 30 for a story, him dating Cass or Eugene is still uncomfortable because they have memories of him being a kid. This brings me to number two. Hugo is different because he’s not in Tangled or Tangled the Series canon. He’s just not. He is nor EVER WAS a published character. You argue that he was 24 when he was originally created but so what? He was someone’s dnd character. A made up creation for a GAME. Not even a novel or a show or anything like that, he was just a game piece for someone’s dnd night. (No hate on DND, I love that stuff and play it all the time). What’s happening here is that you’re making your argument by assuming the worst intentions in the creators. You’ve imagined that these storyboard artists, these paid employees of the disney company, saw this 14 year old character that they helped bring to life in the show and decided they wanted to ship him with someone so they grabbed their 24 year old dnd character off the shelf and smooshed their faces together like Barbie Dolls. No one can stop you from thinking that, but it’s pretty harsh to then take this imagining and repeat it as fact. You’re ignoring the organic and natural process of storytellers and writers who have the ability to imagine characters in new storylines, and who have the ability to use old material in new ways.
You’re ignoring what we’ve been told was the actual series of events. Kay and Anna felt was Varian was worth his own story and just as Rapunzel started her adventure at the age of 18 so they decided Varian would start his at 18. Not aging him up, just fast forwarding to when Tangled the Series would have concluded. (and again, giving it a thematic symmetry by having him start out the same age as Raps).
But since the story was going to be centered around Varian they wanted to create a new cast of characters. Somewhere in this creation Anna decided to redesign an old character to fit this new story. It’s something writers do all the time. Same with old settings, or plotlines. Hugo from DND is not the same as Hugo from 7k. 7k Hugo is canonically 19. Or at least as canonically as he can be since the proposal for this story never got past the initial outlines and so was never published. But the intention was for him to be about the same age as Varian.
It’s different because he was changed before being placed in the story. It’s different because 7k isn’t a published story, it’s a concept that was only in the first stages of planning.
I realize that this little essay of mine isn’t about to sway any hearts or minds. If you feel a certain way about a ship then no one is going to stop you. And there’s nothing wrong with not liking a ship. But I’d rather you didn’t feel the need to invent justifications for your feelings. This relationship does not and has never had an age gap because it was never written that way by Kay or Anna. It’s just not how fiction or storytelling works.
Apologies for the long response.
What do you think?
The creators of Vat7K absolutely shipped their 24 year old OC Hugo with 14 year old Varian. What other possible reason would have lead them to reuse this particular OC for an AU ship if they didn't? o__O; (And people get pissed when I call him a self insert wish fulfillment character. *sighs*) All logic points to this conclusion being an undeniable fact, but fans of the ship will vehemently deny it because they are afraid of being looped in with or potentially viewed as worse than Varipunzel or Cassanrian fans who age characters up for their respective ships. I mean a 10 year age gap is on level with Eugene x Varian. Hugo is pretty much portrayed as Flynn Rider 2.0 anyway. I don't ship it, but if they like it then they like it. It's all personal preference. Which should be respected. Though if they ever consider harassing fans of other ships for any age related reasons then they are nothing more than delusional hypocrites.

2020 Reading Challenge Report
I really liked it last year when I made a spread in my journal with my best of books for 2019. So here’s my best of for 2020.
I was WAY surprised that all my favorite books this year were non-fiction. That doesn't mean I didn’t read any good fiction this year, I definitely did. But the truly outstanding, five star books were all non-fiction. This is super weird for me because I never used to read non-fiction unless it was for school. But last year I made a deal with myself that I should have a non-fiction book as at least one of my books-in-progress at all times. I continued that rule this year and wow have I read some great stuff as a result.
Metrics:
Total books read in 2020: 87
If you remove all the books I read with kids, that’s 64. If you remove the books I read with kids and also graphic novels (which—despite being books, goddamn it—admittedly take a lot less time to read), I read 45 books this year. I refuse to remove the audiobooks because that’s hella insulting. Audiobooks are books.
One thing I noticed this year is that before I counted, I was under the impression that I had read a lot of books by Black authors this year, but I hadn't. In fact, it was far fewer than last year. I think part of what was internally confusing was that because two of my books were Caste and The Warmth of Other Suns, both substantial (in the thinking sense and the length sense), at any given time this year, I was reading at least one book by a Black author. So that skewed my thinking. Still, fewer than 10% Black authors is a poor metric.
Another thing I noticed was that cancelled plans for 10 months also means cancelled car trips (yay!) and cancelled audiobook listenings (boo!) So that cut into my total a bit, not listening to books as much with the kids. But I'm looking forward to lots more reading in the new year! Including finishing a bunch of books the kids and I are reading for school and tons of stuff for work. Because I like to have things going on every burner, there are 10 books in progress at the moment, about half of them for school.

The Best Way to Learn History is to Read Fiction
Why study historic fiction?
A former ee-e book membership member HATED it while the organization study historic fiction. She become adamant that analyzing novels approximately real historic occasions become a waste of time. All the ones conversations withinside the ee-e book have been made up due to the fact nobody alive now may want to probably recognize what have been stated among characters in a preceding generation.
Historical fiction is simply FICTION, she declared.
I adamantly disagreed.
“Writers do lots of studies earlier than crafting a historic novel, regularly gaining access to real journals, letters, and newspaper articles of the time. They recognize the outstanding gamers of the period. They recognize approximately the dialect, the costumes, the residing conditions, the political situations, and the accoutrements of lifestyles after they write their novel. Isn’t it higher to get a FEEL for the generation and a few information of the problems and the peoples’ responses to them than to be placed to sleep with the aid of using a few dry, dull, dull nonfiction textual content or flat-voiced biography?”
(My apologies to biographers and nonfiction writers everywhere. This become a announcement I made earlier than I started out analyzing a number of nonfiction and knowing that now no longer all biographies have been dull. Not all records texts have been dull.)
My pal became her head away and lifted her nostril barely as though the scent of what I had stated become offensive.
We by no means got here to any type of settlement approximately the fee of historic fiction. For her, it become nonsense — a waste of highbrow energy. For me, historic fiction is a joy, the first-rate manner to research records.
Ironic, don’t you think?
I discovered extra approximately records from made-up memories than I did from a presentation of the facts.
What’s the first-rate a part of historic fiction?
History.
Of course, the tale is important. It has to have a compelling plot, interesting, third-dimensional characters, sensible dialog, and keep-it-transferring pacing. The writing is important. The cowl design, ee-e book blurb, strengthen reviews, and exposure are tantamount to a ee-e book’s success, however it’s the records of a historic novel that entices me.
I am now no longer by myself in taking part in historic fiction. It’s a famous style with the strains among literary fiction, women’s fiction, historic fiction, or even thriller and suspense blurring.
I discovered some distance extra approximately records from analyzing novels than I ever did from analyzing a textbook
I become a great scholar in excessive school. I sat withinside the the front row, took notes, and paid interest to regardless of the instructor stated. (No note-passing, spitballs, or having a pipe dream for me!) But as attentive as I become, I didn’t get plenty concept of records outdoor of some simple concepts. I discovered the Civil War took place from 1861–1865 and that the most important problem become slavery. I knew that World War II started out for America with the bombing of Pearl Harbor and that hundreds of thousands of Jews have been gassed in chambers with the aid of using Adolph Hitler. America received her independence in 1776; there has been a “Cold War” with Russia, and we landed a person at the moon in 1969.
My information of records existed of simple dates and standard terms.
But as an avid reader, I actually have discovered some distance extra records from novels than I ever did from textbooks. Not handiest have I discovered approximately historic movements, however I’ve internalized them. History is a part of my waking focus due to the memories I’ve study. I recognize how exclusive occasions impacted the human beings of the time. I get how the numerous viewpoints of a criminal selection stirred controversy and the way wars affected households on a private level.
What I’ve discovered approximately records from analyzing fiction constitutes a large catalog. If you consider it, you’ll in all likelihood give you a protracted listing of historic occasions you wouldn’t have understood with out analyzing, too.
Here are only some of mine off the pinnacle of my head.
America’s First Daughter with the aid of using Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie taught me approximately Thomas Jefferson’s slave-retaining past, his dating with Sally Hemmings and her offspring, and the lifestyles of his high-quality daughter, Patsy Randolph.
Julie Orringer’s The Flight Portfolio taught me approximately Varian Fry and his Emergency Rescue Committee who smuggled artists, writers, and philosophers out of German-occupied France on the onset of World War II.
The position of Guernsey Island in World War II — and the spirit of the Resistance Movement, as properly the transportation of kids to maintain them safe — have become clean to me from studying The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society with the aid of using Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.
The Bronze Horseman with the aid of using Paullina Simons introduced to existence the brutal situations of existence in Russia all through Hitler’s march to Leningrad. (I didn’t recognise that human beings had been ravenous and died withinside the streets!)
I could now no longer actually have a touch of an concept approximately the American whaling enterprise of the 1850s with out studying Moby Dick with the aid of using Herman Melville.
Did you recognize approximately the child-abduction-trafficking operation run with the aid of using Georgia Tann withinside the early 1940s? Me neither. I found out approximately it from studying Lisa Wingate’s Before We Were Yours.
While I’m on Lisa Wingate’s work…I dabble in Civil War records, however I had by no means heard of the Lost Friends pages of the Southwestern Christian Advocate, a manner for greater than 3.five million freed slaves to discover misplaced pals and relatives. Check out The Book of Lost Friends.
I’ll possibly by no means get to the bullfights in Spain. And I dislike Ernest Hemingway’s writing, however I felt the color, the manic energy, the violence of bullfighting in Spain with the aid of using studying The Sun Also Rises.
How did they construct the ones big cathedrals 800 years in the past with out high-powered system or computer-aided design? I located out. Read Pillars of the Earth with the aid of using Ken Follett.
Did you recognize that one of the maximum beautiful, glamorous girls of all time became additionally the spouse of Hitler’s fingers supplier and one of the first-rate clinical minds of the time? Read how Hedy Lamarr helped create the cutting-edge mobileular telecellsmartphone in Heather Terrill’s The Only Woman withinside the Room.
I should cross on and on and on. You get the picture.
Reading ancient fiction has coloured my selections and modified my movements — I clearly accept as true with it has made me a higher person. — Crystal King
Reasons to examine ancient fiction
Anna Diamond in The Atlantic: “Using Historical Fiction to Connect Past and Present” gives motives to examine ancient fiction as adults — and as kids. She remarks at the strength novels have withinside the lecture room with the aid of using
easing into hard topics
providing a couple of perspectives
developing a story — a story arc — that heightens exhilaration and the choice to recognise what happened
growing empathy while the testimonies experience personal
“humanizing” records, and making it approximately actual human beings, now no longer dates and statistics.
reducing the skepticism of minority college students who won't accept as true with that textbooks appropriately constitute their testimonies
enhancing vital questioning capabilities with the aid of using encouraging discernment among truth and fiction, fact from falsehood.
She notes,
“ historical fiction books can provide the chance, if taught conscientiously, to interact college students with a couple of perspectives, that are crucial to information records; to assist college students recognize ancient styles and political analogies; and to introduce college students to historiography — how records is written and studied.”
No marvel I like ancient fiction. Not most effective does it assist me find out about the past, however it additionally enables me make selections withinside the present. From studying, I’ve visible the effects of different human beings’s comparable movements and might weigh my selections with theirs.
Reading ancient fiction also can assist me see tendencies for the future. If people repeat the equal styles over time, we recognise what may lie ahead. Heather Webb, the writer of Rodin’s Lover, says it best:
History is likewise a window into our future. As creatures of habit, we stay our lives in a chain of styles and movements. Studying those styles may be beneficial in predicting what comes next, how we need to put together ourselves, or maybe what we need to communicate out towards in a significant manner.
What greater should you need from a book? Reading ancient fiction offers you information of the past, readability withinside the present, and foreknowledge of the future. It takes you to exceptional eras and exceptional places. You get to recognise heaps of characters. It’s knowledge, however it’s additionally simply simple FUN!

Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure Speculation: Varian and Vex Shipping - Part 2
I'm sure you guys have read my speculation post about the possibility of Varian and Vex becoming friends and later a romantic item if these two ever do meet. If not, I added the link below if you want to give it a look:
https://chipmunkfanno1love.tumblr.com/post/189225723097/rapunzels-tangled-adventure-speculation-varian
Despite being what fans call a "crack ship" at this stage, I personally hope this ship does potentially become canon. I admit I'm getting my hopes up at this stage, but I'll accept whatever the writers choose to do (or not do) with these characters and their love lives. Still, I have a number of other headcanons and speculations about how I imagine a romantic relationship developing between these two teens, and thought of some other fictional couples I could potentially compare them to. I've based this off what I have observed of both characters and general ideas I've thought up myself.
Part 2 is going focused more on how I believe the relationship will develop as a whole and what cute, romantic moments I hope to see between these two cuties. :D
(Note: I don't own Tangled or any of the other video clips or GIFs shown here. I am only using them as reference links. )
-
I think that Rapunzel and Eugene could be role models to these two teens regarding dating and relationships due them being older and having more experience romance wise. Plus both Rapunzel and Eugene themselves have had very different experiences regarding relationships with Rapunzel being lucky enough for her first love to end up being her true love, while Eugene has dated other women before and has even had a fiancée, Stalyan, but it took him some time before he finally found the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, so I'm sure both have very different but relevant life experiences to share the two teens.
Personally I can see Varian and Vex's first interactions starting out as a rivalry quite similar to Cassandra and Eugene's, or maybe similar to Rapunzel and Cassandra in the flashback episode, Beginnings. Varian thinks that Vex is rude, mean and quite frightening at times, while Vex finds Varian to be as positively annoying as Princess Rapunzel. Over time though, the two could grow to respect each other as comrades and perhaps even friends. Though there could be hints of romantic attraction and flirtation between them such as accidental touching of hands and/or getting into each others way only to move away quickly and awkwardly. Maybe they could even fall over each other and/or bump into each other, and it leads to one of them catching the other in a romantic (but also awkward) looking dip or even one lying over the others chest. I'm sure I could think of many hilariously adorable moments for these two.
In regards to their feelings about relationships I imagine that Varian, while he would like to have a girlfriend someday, wonders if he's ready for one. I imagine him taking his time to decide if he's ready and I imagine he'd want to pick the right time too, e.g. waiting until the drama with Cassandra and the war with Zhan Tiri is over. Plus, I imagine him feeling torn between his old feelings for Cassandra and his new growing feelings for Vex, and wondering which girl he wants to be with. Whether it means waiting and hoping he'll become the man that he wants to be for Cass and hoping she'll eventually accept him, or take a chance on a relationship with Vex and grow with her both as a couple and as individuals into adulthood.
Despite denying it at first, he eventually realises he has feelings for Vex, but is fearful of rejection from her as he's convinced she doesn't like him. I imagine him taking a number of pointers from Eugene including trying out "the Smolder", but it is only when he allows his true self to shine through does he truly win Vex's heart.
Vex on the other hand is disgusted by the idea of relationships. She's never wanted or considered the idea of having a boyfriend as she finds romance to be icky. Though as she grows closer to Varian as a friend, she admits to feeling confused by her feelings for him, admitting that she's never felt this way about anyone before. I probably see her having a moment or perhaps even a song number similar to Meg's I Won't Say I'm in Love. Either way, I imagine it will take a bit of time before she realises that she has feelings for Varian and would like to give romance and having a boyfriend a shot. I imagine her being secretly shy about opening up about her feelings.
Of course it may take some time before these two choose to be a couple. Perhaps it won't happen until the season finale or even a flash-forward to the future.
I Won't Say I'm in Love from Hercules:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl0DMTlwLw4
-
I would like the idea of them having a romantic duet, showing their confusion over their feelings for each other and describing the physical and emotional sensations they are feeling as a result (as appropriate to Disney Channel of course). Also it could show what they admire about each other in terms of strengths and how it helps the other to grow as a person.
I'm thinking the song could go along the lines of a romantic version of What is This Feeling? from Wicked and We're of the Same Pride from The Lion Guard.
What is this Feeling? from Wicked
https://youtu.be/aKtUwrP8z2A
We're of the Same Pride from The Lion Guard
https://youtu.be/h1Z5seWxCws
I do like Britt Robertson as an actress, but I don't think she's the strongest singer in the world, so unless they take her character's singing down the more comedic route I think it would be better if Vex had another actress do her singing voice.
Other options could be that Jeremy Jordan does a romantic solo as Varian (on and/or off screen) for the two of them, or perhaps neither character sings at all and they instead have another off-screen singer sing a love song for them much like they did with the Friendship Song.
Friendship Song
https://youtu.be/oPsen74HDaI
While a love song is not required for these two considering they're more supporting/guest characters, I certainly find the idea to be very sweet.
-
I actually have a few ideas on what I imagine their first kiss being like (if they have one). As you can see, I've used a few other couple kisses as examples.
It would be cute to see them mirroring Rapunzel and Eugene's first kiss, albeit in a different situation and with a little more teen awkwardness and innocence. Even if they mirror Rapunzel and Eugene's almost kiss in I See the Light that would also be cute.
Eugene and Rapunzel's first kiss:
https://youtu.be/LAZ3IFiINKg
I See the Light scene (watch 2:28 to 3:37)
https://youtu.be/ONkkUuh44eU
-
It would be cute to see Varian's clumsy persona and/or Vex's forceful persona being involved in their first kiss. Here are a few video examples of this trope. I could definitely see Varian swooning like Jane or allowing himself to be pulled into a kiss like Marco is with Star.
Tarzan and Jane kiss (see 1:38 to 2:00)
https://youtu.be/5jtQ1LkA9VM
Star and Marco kiss (watch 2:59 to 3:11):
https://youtu.be/J74RN69k6wQ
-
I think the first kiss between Fix-It Felix and Calhoun could be another good example of a first kiss between Varian and Vex. I could see Varian kissing Vex's cheek in a moment of excitement, only to be pulled in aggressively by the scruff of the collar by Vex. Varian expects her to pummel him, but instead gets a big kiss on the lips which he surprisingly and willingly accepts.
Fix-It Felix and Sergeant Calhoun's First Kiss:
https://youtu.be/nWwnOsVf14o
Other examples could also include her actually doing something to hurt Varian like punching him in the arm or slapping him in the face (after he does something brave and/or stupid (I'm thinking both)) only to stop him from objecting with a big kiss on the lips, which he is shocked about but willingly reciprocates. Here are two examples of this trope:
Rocky and Ginger's kiss (see 1:48 to 2:02 and 5:15 to 5:21)
https://youtu.be/iZpSfV3eyAo
Hiccup and Astrid's first kisses (sorry for the terrible quality):
https://youtu.be/lpkTknb2eJQ
-
Even a simple cheek kiss would be fine. I could imagine Varian kissing Vex on the cheek like Hercules did with Meg and her having a similar reaction to Meg's. Perhaps it could happen the other way around and it is Vex who kisses Varian on the cheek, and he's the one who ends up like this:
-
In the end though, as romantic and cute as a kiss would be (especially since it will be a first kiss for both of them), they honestly don't have to kiss. Personally I feel a romantic hug between the two of them will be just as adorable. Plus it will show the innocence of young first love.
Some good examples of these is shown with Milo and Kida in Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
Milo and Kida's romantic hug and holding hands:
https://youtu.be/hTOnNa-EHZE
Other more youthful examples include another adorable Disney Channel pair:
Star and Marco
They have a number of great romantic hug examples, but a few of my favourites include this GIF above and these few video clips here.
Star and Marco hug 1 (see 2:48 to 2:50):
https://youtu.be/fLlgm1JqGsc
Star and Marco hug 2 (see 0:30 to 0:44):
https://youtu.be/0m7KW63lKDQ
Star and Marco hug 3 and 4 (see 2:52 to 2:59 and 4:04 to 4:18):
https://youtu.be/MT5ojPHj1YY
I'm sure Varian will learn the hard way that Vex doesn't like hugs after she either punches him after his attempts to hug her (he's the opposite of her in terms of hugging) or something along the same lines as Adira trying to break Lance's arm for generally touching her, lol:
Adira trying to break Lance's arm (see 0:09 to 0:12)
https://youtu.be/eHz2sUfJuO4
Still it does help him learn to respect her boundaries. Over time though as the two grow more fond of each other, even Vex has a hard time hiding it. Personally I imagine a romantic hug between them happening in either or both of these scenarios:
Perhaps as they are saying goodbye Varian offers to respectfully shake hands, but then Vex shrugs and says "Oh, what the heck." and throws her arms around him. A move that surprises Varian, but he also returns affectionately.
Who knows, maybe the two could hug each other after the winning of an epic battle with Zhan Tiri.
-
Considering we've got a limited amount of episodes left to go, I think the chances these big moments happening within the shows run is pretty slim. It's possible they could fit some moments like this into a number of episodes and/or even in the full length specials, but it obviously has to be written in such a way that it doesn't seem too rushed.
Even if Varian and Vex have a very short moment together where romantic attraction to each other is hinted at but it's left to us as viewers to guess what happens with them, then I think that will also work. They could show the result (or lack of results) of that union in a flash-forward. I'm honestly open-minded. :)

Tangled: The series Q&A with Chris.
This is a recapitulation from today’s (February 9th, 2019) Questions and Answers session with Chris on the Tangled Discord Server.
Q: How was your day? How has the crew been? A: That’s an easy one... so far, my day has been great! We’ve all been actually REALLY great! Everyone is still loving making the show! And we all can’t wait for you all to see what’s coming up!
Q: What this series means to you personally? A: As most already know, the show is very personal for me. I pull a lot of the themes and situations from my own experiences and the experiences of the people I love. The writers do an amazing job!
Q: Which episode are you most excited for out of the new titles that were released? A: I need to stay away from commenting on anything coming up. Sorry guys!!! You will love them though, I promise!
Q: Do you know whether or not there will be a long hiatus between season 2 and season 3 too? A: I do not know anything about Disney Channel’s plans for the shows schedule.
Q: I wonder who has built the caravan. Was it Rapunzel herself? A: We all just imagined that the caravan was picked up along the way shortly after the events of season one. I liked the idea that they were out there picking up supplies and things along their way. There could be more stories about how they acquired it. Those stories could be very fun.
Q: I know there are a lot of questions coming in but when you have a moment, would you mind telling us some of your favorite fan theories or AUs? A: AU’s - Well, that Moon Varian thing has gotten a lot of attention.
Q: What did you think when you heard that Germany was getting the episodes first? A: Honestly, it was quite odd to hear that Germany was getting the new episodes first. But again, I have zero say over how programming works at the channel. No one at the studio really does.
Q: Do you read fanfiction of the show? A: I don’t really have the time to read fan fiction, and I’d be worried that some of those ideas would find themselves into the show, so I stay away from them.... I’m sure they are great though!! I love that people feel so connected to the story that they write their own stories! That is SO GREAT! And inspiring in itself!
Q: Have you met any cosplayers? A: Uh, I met a few at D23! Amazing people!
Q: Fave piece of fanart? A: Any of the Cass fan art! I screen shot them and send a few of them to Eden! She loves them!!!
Q: Who's your favorite character? A: It’s hard to have a fav. I love them all so much!
Q: Bouncing off of that question, do you have a favorite villain? A: Well cone on, what would happen to me if I didn’t say Varian wasn’t my fav? HAHAHA!!! I do love Varian!
Comment: I noticed Varian went through lots of design changes, not really a question but I just gotta say how amazing his design is. Chris: He was conceived very early on in the development of the show. But he didn’t really come to life until Jeremy stepped into the role. His design changed after Jeremy was cast. Once we knew more about him he started to take more visual shape. He was a little softer in his design, not as dynamic. Ben Balistreri really found the right tone with him and gave him his final look! You can thank him!
Q: What about Cass. DId she change as well? A: Cass was similar. We had a pretty good idea of who she was, and what she would look like. But once I heard Eden’s voice, she became much more real and started to influence the design much more. Tough and able, she needed to look older and feel different than Rapunzel.
Q: Are you planning to add any more major-ish characters? A: Can’t really speak about upcoming episodes, SORRY!!!
Q: Do you or the other crew members have any pets that inspired any of the animals in the show, like Max or Rudiger or Pascal or Owl? A: Not REALLY?!I wanted my Scottish terrier to make it into the show, but he never did. His name was Conan!
Q: Is there anything you can tell us about (Shorty)? A: No, I like his mystery.
Q: Is he gonna be the Old Man Mcgucket of the series? A: He will NOT be the Old Man Mcgucket of the show.
Q: What is working on a creative team like? It's something i would love to do one day, but i was wondering what studio life is like? A: Working with the crew is the best part of the show. They are amazingly talented and inspiring! I love our crew. The artists, the writers, the voices, the musicians. It’s an amazing process. I’m so lucky that I get to work with ALL of them. I’m the only one that gets to work one on one with every single person on the show. Every single person brings a unique voice to the show. It has its challenges, but at the end of the day, you guys make it ALL worth it. So much more to come! You guys have no idea! I feel like the best stuff is ahead of us. I just wish there were more of you! I know, you guys do a GREAT job. But it’s amazing that so many “Tangled” fans still don’t even know that there is a SHOW!
Q: So at what point in the creative process do you think it's easiest to see what the episode will be? A: Hopefully it’s pretty early, but it doesn’t become solid for me until we start talking to the director and board artists about it. I love the visuals so it becomes clearer to me when I can start seeing things. The themes are always clear. It’s really about finding what the individual episode has to do with the season. Then I can start fine tuning it.
Q: What is you favourite scene? A: Oh I have so many. Um.......When her hair comes back. Her jumping out into the moonlight was my drawing. I loved that. It was like her being reborn.
Q: What made you decide that the leaf people on the Island (Lorbs) should talk with a German accent? A: It just seemed to be a funny thing for them to be German. Flula Borg is hilarious. He was in Pitch Perfect. And is on Conan O’Brien all the time.
Q: Has there ever been bloopers during the series? A: Bloopers are rare in animation. We cut scenes from time to time but the process needs to be tight so very few things get cut!
Q: Did anyone who said the idols name have trouble pronouncing "Idol of the Vershaftsbezeigungengien"? A: Oh! That?! HA! Flula just said it, nailed it. And it just became what the idol was called! We laughed every time he said it. He never messed it up. Nailed it every time.
Q: What background do we have on Friedborg's creation? A: Oh Friedborg.... She was simply meant to be this fun silent member of the castle. The show is SO heavy... and emotional, we just try to look for as many light moments and characters as we can to lessen the heaviness of the overall story.
Q: Did you have any inspiration for the character of Cass? A: Oh Cass. Ummm... she’s made up of a lot of people and experiences. I had an older wiser friend growing up that showed me the ropes. I wanted Rapunzel to have one of those. I cool, experienced buddy. Outside of Eugene. There’s your boyfriend, and then there’s your BFF. They are different.
Q: Were show auditions done all at the same time? Or as new characters needed? A: No, Lance came later, but I knew who I wanted for him. James was ALWAYS Lance.
Q: I'm curious, why did you decide to give Cass an Owl? A: Ben loves owls. And it seemed like something she’d have. Lives most of its real life at night.
Q: What was your inspiration for Quirin, Varian, and their family? A: Varian really came out of necessity. We needed something that would illustrate Rapunzel and her Father’s strained relationship.
Q: What inspired you to get so much Broadway talent for the voices? A: Well. I love broadway. And it seemed in line with the film already. Donna Murphy is a Broadway legend! So it only seemed natural. I knew there was going to be a lot of music and wanted a more sophisticated talent pool than just the regular Disney Channel Stars. Our cast is AMAZING! You guys have no idea.
Comment: Im a huge broadway fan I was so sad Christian Borle didn't sing. Chris: He didn’t sing.... BUUUUT STILL!!! CHRISTIAN BORLE!!!! He’s amazing!!!
Q: Whose bird design is your favourite? A: I loved them all. They won an award!!!
Q: With two legends like the actors playing mother and father, why did you decide to not do a song? A: Songs are difficult to do in the 22 min episodes. We knew we wanted Rapunzel and Cass to sing about the road, so after that we just ran out of time!
Q: Without going into spoilers, any information we can know on Adira's development? A: Well obviously she has the tattoo... So she’s connected in SOME way.
Q: On character design, how long does it take to design a character? A: As far as time goes.... The crew gets a few weeks to design a show, but for major characters that we know we will see over multiple episodes, we take more time. Ben was working on Adira’s design even before we ended season one.
Q: Could I be cheeky and ask for some portfolio tips? Like.. what would be the number one thing a studio (not just disney, any really) would look for when it comes to a character design artist? A: Good question...The number one thing needed for a designer is to know how to turn a character in space. It’s boring, but it’s the NUMBER ONE THING required for the job. Knowledge of shape and space. Not just 3/4 front. So many portfolios have these amazing drawings, but they don’t mean anything if that can’t animate. Do tons and tons of turns. A lot of people think that character design is this super creative flourish of whatever you want all day long. And honestly, it’s not. It’s a lot of mundane clinical turns that are done for use by animators. It’s very boring most of the time.
Q: Would that be very similar for general concept art? A: Well, there’s a difference between visual development and character design.Character design for TV is CLINICAL AND STERILE. But VERY useful. And necessary. But it’s not the life of a “Art of” book. You need to be able to think like a computer.
Q: How early did you have the concept for Lance, and did his role change during development? A: I think I’ve told this story before but I love telling it. About Lance. So. I had flown to New York to pitch the show to Music legend Alan Menken... We spent the day pitching and Alan loved the concept of the show and agreed to write our songs!!! HUGE! Life changing day for sure. So I think he got us tickets to see Aladdin that evening on Broadway. I had never seen it on stage. So we went and I always keep notes for ideas in my phone. And the moment I saw James Monroe Iglehart, I knew he needed to be in the show. He was so much fun! And big! And funny! And a GREAT singer.I wrote down “Eugene needs a fun friend from his past and James would be perfect!” This was before we even began writing any scripts for the show. So from then on out, he became a character in my head, it was just the details of how he would play into the story. But we all love him and James is like a brother to me. We have so much in common! He’s the best! He’s in Hamilton on Broadway now! He and Lin go back a LONG way! They have been friends for years! Q: Which movie or show song is your favourite? A: Well, if it’s not too obvious, I’m a “Little Shop of Horrors”/“Little Mermaid” guy.I love the tragedy of Little Shop and the beauty of Mermaid. I love music and animation. I think our songs are some of the best Disney has to offer across the board. I’d put any of our songs against the features any day.And there are more coming that are some of the best in the series!!!
Comment: Listen up is one of my favorites. Chris: I like listen up because Rapunzel at that point needs to listen to the voices in her head... it was motivated by the things that were happening in the bigger story.
Comment: I liked View from up here. Chris: View from Up Here was also motivated by the bigger arc of the story. Songs for me should work hard to inform the audience what is happening in the story overall, not just what’s happening AT THE MOMENT. “Ready as I’ll ever be” was really about Rapunzel getting ready to leave home. She was as ready to start her adventure as she was going to be. We just used the song to give that same attitude to everyone. But Rapunzel is the focus. Everything SHOULD have purpose. Narrative purpose.
Chris: Keep watching and SPREAD THE WORD!!!

hey so i’ve always been a staunch believer in still being able to love a character without condoning their actions, but i’ve always been curious of what your thoughts are on garrosh’s bombing of theramore? do you think it was as heinous of an act as it’s made to be in the lore, considering all citizens were evacuated?
it’s kind of funny/stunning to me that people care about my opinion on this stuff… im really flattered actually!!! haha i just feel like “oh, you’re actually asking me to talk about Garrosh? well, by all means…”
I can understand the logistics of wanting to take out Theramore. Northwatch Hold is an extension of the Alliance forces troubling the east coast of Kalimdor, which are stationed at the stronghold of Theramore. Northwatch Hold and the humans there have been putting pressure on the orcs for years, and the trolls in the neighboring isles ages before that. Sometimes people forget, I think, that the humans and the trolls have been at war longer than Thrall’s Horde had even existed. Some of your first quests as a Horde character starting in Durotar (back when the tauren, trolls, and orcs all started in the Valley of Trials and were directly funneled into the Barrens, resulting in the notorious Barrens Chat of yore) are to combat the units stationed at Northwatch. And, unfortunately despite Jaina’s efforts, many of the humans of eastern Kalimdor still sought to drive the Horde out, so it was still a matter of the Horde defending their new homes.
If you visit Cataclysm’s Theramore, there is a lot of talk of …not necessarily mutiny, but a budding kind of nationalism and yearning to “return to the old ways”. Just as the orcs who were loyal to Garrosh were itching to return to the version of the Horde that preceded Thrall’s, there were plenty of humans sharpening their blades and talking about “the good old days”. There is even a questline on the Alliance side in Theramore to expose these deserters. Traitors Among Us is one of the first quests you complete. Morgaledh quotes some of the “deserter” NPCs in the WoWhead comments, while adding their own echoed sentiments:
“These people will know Admiral Proudmoore for the true hero he was”“You can’t stop us from exposing the truth about Jaina’s cowardice”“It’s people like you who weaken the Alliance and invite the Horde to take away all we’ve fought for”I’ve done this quest on many characters over many years, and I completely agree with the Agitators. That Thrall-loving @#$% Jaina needs to be deposed, the men-at-arms of Theramore turned to valiant deeds against the animals of Orgrimmar, and this pretense of peace with the green-skins done away with once and for all.
Additionally, Theramore has spies out by Brackenwall, an ogre village allied with the Horde, and was actively sending troops further into the Barrens in the name of King Varian.
I mention this only because, from both Alliance and Horde standpoints, Theramore was by no means a neutral ground, nor lack of a threat. Theramore, whether by Jaina’s decree or not, was already actively brewing resentment and making moves against the Horde.
Garrosh’s plan was good. Parking the Horde ships just outside Theramore’s waters to intimidate—as well as prepare—Theramore for an assault is pretty clever, in my opinion. They had a chance to clear out civilians as well as gather enough Alliance forces to combat the estimated number of Horde units. He also had the Horde march in, engage in a skirmish, and then retreat; it gave the Horde a chance to fight a true battle and sent a direct message to the Alliance about what they were up against. But this was not the whole of Garrosh’s plan, and that is where it gets bad. Everything I just mentioned was only for appearances, as Garrosh’s true intentions were unbeknownst to everyone but his closest associates (Malkorok, some Kor’kron, etc.).
Literally everything else following this is completely fucking obscene, unethical, dishonorable, grotesque, cowardly, and whatever the hell else you want to call it. Even if Theramore hadn’t been nuked, per se, and it was just the enslaved elementals or just the barrage of siege weaponry, the travesty and crime of Garrosh’s attack on Theramore was that it was dishonorable. It was unjust, and it was dishonest. He deliberately withheld information from his own people, including the other racial leaders, and threatened them with treason and/or death if they were to question his methods. He lied to the Horde AND the Alliance. They say all is fair in love and war, but Theramore wasn’t warfare. It was extermination, and Garrosh used every ounce of deception and abuse that he could to screw everybody over.
The bombing of Theramore fucking sucks. Stealing the Focusing Iris is fucking dumb (still have no idea how the Horde managed to pull that shit off, by the way), and reading through Tides of War was a grueling experience. From a fiction standpoint, it is one of the lowest, most non-rewarding experiences I’ve had in WoW’s storytelling. It is similar to a gripe I have with the majority of Pixar films: sometimes the low that is hit is so low, so hopeless, that there is emotionally a point of no return in which, I personally feel, the story has been fatally wounded. Maybe it’s because of my own experiences with trauma or whatever, but reaching an “emotional dead-end” in a story like that completely negates whatever sort of redemption buds from that conflict; it may heal, but it leaves a scar. Maybe it’s because I’m a pathetic softie grown on Disney movies that can’t handle more than two seconds of a bad time, who knows. But I hate knowing shit can be irreparably damaged in stories with zero hopeful outlook, especially when I myself as a viewer, or in identifying with the protagonist, am held accountable. I don’t glean entertainment or enjoyment from stories that infuse me with guilt and tell me that everything is my fault and that I let this happen and deserve to be punished or killed.
Theramore was the death knell of a thousand things. Anything Jaina does from now on is going to be seen as irrational because of her own people standing against her and players trying to justify reasons for why Garrosh did what he did and how he, technically, was blah blah blah. Jaina is put through a meatgrinder and made to feel some of the worst pain anyone can ever feel. Jaina has already been through an entire shitshow. She has lost her father, her fiancé, her people, her home, and anyone she could have ever trusted. She has lost everything she has sacrificed these things for: peace. It’s gone. In the blink of an eye. Jaina built Theramore.
Everyone jokes about death knights giving the Illidari a side-eye when they ask “I’ve sacrificed everything—what have you given?” How does it feel to be the woman who, maybe, she’ll never know, might have been able to prevent the rise of the Lich King? Was she wrong to reject Arthas at Stratholme? To reject Kael’thas in Dalaran? To reject her father Daelin and stand with Thrall? People take pity on Illidan, who even gets a redemptive arc in Legion and is literally a demon, yet accuse Jaina of being a dreadlord because of the justified anger she feels and pain she has endured. Theramore is now a scapegoat for all of her sorrow as people conveniently forget the rest of her history.
Garrosh’s character was executed with Theramore. Anything after that must have been emotionally exhausting beyond belief. I can’t imagine having to play through Pandaria with that piece of shit as Warchief. He let everyone down. How could anyone say “for the Horde” proudly with anything but hatred in their hearts? Who could condone that? Bringing the enormity of something like that to a video game that is supposed to be fun and interesting and certainly have a bit of storytelling conflict, sure, but not to that degree, ultimately sucks the fun out of it. Theramore didn’t need to happen the way it did, and personally I think the dropping of the mana bomb/nuke, and all of the deaths associated with it, and how graphically it was recounted in Tides of War—Jaina sifting through the rubble of her home, touching the remains of Kinndy and having them burst into arcane powder in her hands, dedicating the length of the book to building up to the event—was incredibly fucking tasteless. It could have been a barrage of bombs, even, like the goblins do all the time, or, like I said, it would have sealed the deal enough to have Garrosh abuse the elements and lie to his people to paint him as a villain.
I mean, I guess they wanted to tie in Dalaran’s neutrality somehow and create conflict there (for some reason, even though both the Horde and the Alliance are back there in Legion, I guess because Jaina left the Kirin Tor), and Rhonin could have died in literally any other imaginable way. It didn’t have to be from a “magical” nuke. If it was supposed to somehow “forward” WoW’s standard technology (which is indeed one thing that Garrosh did, pulling the Horde into the industrial age), they fucked up by making it a one-time resource like the Focusing Iris and using it in such a grisly, abominable way that even the Forsaken’s stomachs turned. From a gameplay, story, and even lore perspective, it was absolute overkill.
tl;dr Garrosh’s attack on Theramore was absolutely heinous and was the death of his character. I don’t know how anyone took the Divine Bell as a threat after the Theramore scenario, and literally the only way they could have upped the evil ante for Garrosh at the end of Mists was to have him seize the heart of a dead Old God, the only thing more evil and more powerful than the demons he apparently so reviled. It fucked up everything, including the overall storytelling tone of the Warcraft franchise. Nobody won and nothing about it is entertaining in the slightest. It’s incredibly tasteless and, in my opinion, a huge smudge on the lore, and one of Blizzard’s most—if not the most—flagrant cases of “bad writing”. People still talk about it, sure, not because it was emotionally gray and compelling like the mak’gora between Garrosh and Thrall, but because it was outlandishly inappropriate for the setting.
I love Garrosh as a character, but Theramore is honestly one of those things I basically just block out of my mind. I am more comfortable with him stealing the heart of Y’shaarj than the extermination of Theramore.

A Court of Wings and Ruin spoilers!!!
I know it’s only a day after its release, but HUDDLE UP AND BREAK OUT THE HOT WATER Y’ALL, IT’S TEA TIME!
From what I’ve seen so far, a lot (like an unhealthy amount) of people were complaining about either
A. lack of shippable moments going on with characters
B. too much of said shipping
C. a Deathly Hallows ending where everybody lived and it’s all Gucci
For the lack of shippable moments comment, it was chalk full of them. The moment home girl gets back to Velaris it’s a fucking ship yard, SHIPS. EVERY. WHERE. New and old. It’s literally fair game for anyone and everyone. Argument invalid. Next!
Too much shipping? meh, i can see it a little with Nesta and Cassian but literally that’s the extent of the excessive “screen time” given to potential ship building. I think it’s a good blend of not too much that it feels like fan service but just enough that it leaves room for more ships to form. some that maybe a few of us never thought to create. *cough* Amren and Varian
And for the last complaint, uhhhhhhh, need I remind you that the original and best Feysand shipper out here, the Paul Revere of tea spreading and the number one “always looking out for the homie Feyre” gangster in the hood of Prythian took that long dirt nap while helping Feyre and STAYED EVEN THOUGH HE KNEW HE WAS GONNA GET AXED. So the “deathly hallows ending” argument is kinda invalid (I say kinda, but don’t worry I’ll get back to that later). Matter of fact, we need to pour one out for the realest cat in the neighborhood, the Suriel. Seriously this took me by surprise, *in Kevin Hart’s voice* NOOOOOO I wasn’t ready!!! To be honest, for me that was the biggest shock and saddest moment in the book.
Rest in Fictional Paradise, Fam. You earned it.
Now back to the Tea, can we talk about what happened during this book?!? Wait, we need a recap:
Tamlin’s a bitch, Ianthe’s a hoe and nobody (but Rhysand and his Court of Dreams) help Feyre with her PTSD, so she chucks up the deuces after Tamlin literally locks her up in the manor after she LITERALLY just told him that it fucks with her mental to locked in places. Feyre pops a squat with Rhys and his crew and they become friends along with his top notch crew of day one loyal gangsters: his scary Second in Command Armen, his Third in Command and sassy cousin Morrigan, General of his armies and absolute life of the party Cassain and, his spymaster and huggable emo (and this world’s a equivalent of Nico de Angelo) Azriel. Later we find out that Feyre and Rhysand are mates and that the King of Hybern wants to axe off everybody (specifically humans and the fae that support human rights) with the magical object of Pryhian’s birth/origin, the Caldron, because...he’s a dick what else is there to say. After watching Satan (the King of Hybern) torture and forcibly turn her sisters fae, shot Azriel AND shred Cassain’s wings while trying to nullify the Caldron, Feyre sacrifices herself to that bitch ass cry baby Tamlin and pretended to hate her boo and their court. Yes, their court, because *drum roll please* SHE’S HIGH LADY OF THE NIGHT COURT BITCHES!
AND THAT’S WHAT YOU MISSED ON GLEE! (is that too old now, does anyone still get that reference?)
Anywayyyyy......I’m not going to talk about the whole book but just the parts that had me like:
Buckle up, buttercups because there was a lot of OMFG moments (and yes we’re going in chronological order) TRIGGER WARNING: rape
1. uhhh, Ianthe is a fucking rapist. We all know it was sprinkled a bit in ACOMAF but tbh none of us were totally concerned then. Rhys could literally (and slightly did) go Darth Vader on her “no means yes” ass and choke the life out of her. But it isn’t until Feyre finds her trying to fuck Lucien (with chained up against his will) that she unleashes her fucking power and forces her to mutilate her own hand with a rock. it was deeply satisfying for a number of reasons but namely that this bitch needs to learn how to keep her fucking hands to herself and learn that no means no. comeuppance check!
2. Cassain’s wings are Gucci and Az is fine (let’s be real here for a second, that’s all we really cared/was worried about)
3. Nesta is tied to the Caldron and can use it’s power and sense when it’s about to be used. Elain is a freaking Seer and gives the future through literal and cryptic sentences. Like PJ AND HoO Oracle style.
4. Remember how The Bone Craver appeared to Feyre as a young boy with striking blue eyes in ACOMAF? Guess who that is...DING DING DING thats right, he appears to her as her’s and Rhys’s first born son (WHICH MEANS THEY GONNA LIVE/SURVIVE LONG ENOUGH TO HAVE A BABY!)
5. Mother fucking Chapter 43-45, we didn’t get “the Wall Sexy Time” like some of y’all wanted but by Heavenly Jesus, the DRAMA that goes down will have you like:
I don’t dare spoil for you guys what is said and done, but if you ever wondered what would happen with ALL of the high lords in one room AFTER Feyre leaves Tamlin/Spring Court (again) and goes back to Rhys...Sarah J. Maas did not disappoint. I don’t think even the Suriel himself could’ve forseen the hilarity and jaw dropping insult ping pong match of insanity that transpired.
6. In the case of Lucien Vanserra of the Autumn Court; Helion, High Lord of the Day Court..YOU ARE THE FATHER
YEP! LUCIEN (aka Elain’s mate) IS THE SOLE HEIR TO THE DAY COURT AND ONLY HIS MAMA (and now Feyre and Rhys) KNOW!
7. The loyalest and sassiest character, enough to rival Amern and Mor, literally takes a bullet to get info to Feyre. RIP Suriel
8. We finally find out why Mor doesn’t sleep with Az. Not gonna spoil that either.
9. Nesta and Cassain are totally a thing; home girl straight up cries his name on the battlefield to try and protect him from getting hit but the Caldron and fights the King of Hybern when he snaps Cassian’s wings BUT......
10. it’s ELAIN who gets the drop on the King and stabs this fool in the back of his neck and NESTA (with the knife still in his throat) twists it around to slowly decapitate him
11. Rhysand dies.
i mean don’t get me wrong i WAS shocked. but yea, he dies......but he comes back to life the same exact way Feyre does and it’s not even that long of a wait (maybe 10-15 minutes max in book time). it wasn’t as fulfilling of an Ex Machina like the first book and it did slightly border line Deathly Hallows happy ending all around but the previous moments (and plus some that I didn’t even mention) outweighed the sappy ending with jaw dropping awesomeness, kick ass badassery and some tear jerking sincere dialogues from the main characters. So i’ll ignore it and let it slide.
Over all I was happy af with this book and was pleasantly surprised/shocked by some of the *oh shit* moments. Especially the end, I hadn’t thought that it was going to be a happy ending (was mentally preparing for the worst) but it was ok because I have no doubt some new (and maybe old) shit will pop off in book 4!
